You can find more biographical material at Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, National Portrait Gallery (plus scroll down for a helpful video), Harry Ransom Center.
...Covarrubias drew inspiration from various indigenous sources, incorporating American Indian lore, Pre-Columbian and early Mexican mythologies, and contemporary South and North American symbols. In Genesis, he created a composite Creation theory which tells the story of the new fifth world under the mythological belief system of the Aztecs. Speaking of the inspiration behind Genesis, Peter Stewart said, "The burning idea behind Covarrubias' great mural was to recognize the fundamental unity of an ancient New World belief system by isolating the concept of 'Genesis' and studying it in various cultural traditions". Covarrubias executed this theme through his illustration of the Indian concept of the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. Within each element is a dichotomy that contributed to the destruction of earlier worlds and it was only with the creation of the current fifth element that all elements were brought into balance to the potential benefit of mankind. Noteworthy symbols within the work include the five plants upon the Earth's surface: wheat, maize, citrus, sunflower, and cotton. — Read more at Dallas Auction Gallery.
