Happy Friday and happy Prince Rogers Nelson aka Prince aka The Artist's birthday. (Other birthdays: Beau Brummell, Elizabeth Bowen, Gwendolyn Brooks, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Liam Neeson, Louise Erdrich). Our community project for today: scent a Prince song, or do whatever else you like with the theme.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I get zero points for creativity, but all the same, I'm in Hermès Violette Volynka just for the color match with Purple Rain.
Reminder: 6/14 will be Roulette Friday! Devise a game of chance to choose your fragrance of the day. Suggested by AnnieA.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
I was thinking of the purplest thing I know to celebrate His Royal Purpleness, and the obvious answer is Dior Poison. To paraphrase Spinal Tap, “It’s like, how much more purple could this be? And the answer is none. None more purple.” I have a mini of vintage Esprit de Parfum and it is absolutely spectacular stuff (in small doses, of course). It makes me so sad to see what it’s become: I also have some EDT from about fifteen years ago and even then it had been changed, made thinner and brighter to suit popular taste, although the basic structure was intact: nowadays it’s hardly recognizable. The vintage is pure magic.
The vintage Poison extrait is so plush and beautiful!
Chiming in super late, but I was inspired by Ockeghem on Thursday and you on Friday, and wore my vintage poison for Prince day! It was so great, and I haven’t worn it in so long, I wore it again today (Saturday). We smell amazing!
Hello.
I am matching Crystal Ball and Purple Rain with a purple crystal ball perfume: V&R Good Fortune. 🔮
Forget coke or fizzy drinks, I am in bubble tea heaven and I have been drinking at least a cup everyday. I can’t get enough of those chewy things. They are just so much fun and delicious.
I love the round bits in bubble tea too but not so much the cubes.
Right?! The cubes are bogus!
*Taps* big plastic cup and giant straws with you! None of my family nor friends like bubble tea. But I just get mine with extra bubbles and sip on.
LOVE the tapioca boba in bubble tea! The jelly cubes had a texture I didn’t care for.
I’ve got a Raspberry Beret on via Goldfield & Banks Sunset Hour. Rarely wear this one, so I was happy to see it has raspberry in the top notes.
Sigh…we are getting a lot of rain lately. I need more sun and fewer skeeters.
I swear…I’ve never used the words “not a toy” more frequently than in the past few weeks.
Cats! They will grow out of it eventually. Once they are a year and a half… or two. 🤣
It took almost 3 years for my cats to outgrow the “kitten crazies”. Since I had 3 of them at the time, I think they encouraged each other to do stuff.
So much rain here too, but yesterday and today have been beautiful!🌞
I’m copying therabbitsflower from earlier this week, and I’m in 10 Corso Como which came out in 1999.
Like many GenXers, I loved Prince and have several of his albums. I can remember listening to Purple Rain on repeat the summer I was 16 and it was released. I can also remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when they announced on the radio that he had passed. My h and I took my (now) gradtowngirl to see Purple Rain in the theater that evening. She would have been 15 going on 16 at the time. Serendipitous.
I had the most vivid dream about my beloved granny I’ve ever had last night in the almost 5 years it’s been since she left us. She and I were sitting next to each other at a table and she was taking to someone sitting across from us. I was looking at her and she was so vividly herself, her beautiful ivory skin and voice. I reached over and held her hand and then in my dream I started to cry because even though I was dreaming, I knew that it was a dream and she is no longer here. She looked over at me then and asked me “why are you crying honey?” and she sounded just like she did when she was alive. I woke up then, sobbing. Anyway, I believe she came to see me on this, the eve of my baby’s high school graduation.
What a beautiful and sad dream. Our loved ones keep living within us, leaving imprints in our hearts, changing our lives. Hugs.
Thank you Glannys. I agree, I’m glad she came to “see” me in my dream. I feel like I got to spend a little bit of time with her even though she’s no longer here.
Visit dreams are comforting but also heartbreaking. I’ve had them with my Mom. When I saw her, she was the most beautiful she had ever been, and the most peaceful. I’m glad your Grandmother came to you during this time.
😭Thanks lillyjo. Hugs!
❤️
What a lovely dream.
Thanks Desirae.☺️
That’s very special and beautiful.
Thanks Calypso. I am thinking of you and your mom!
What a lovely dream. I was touched reading it, and hope it brought you solace after the tears.
How touching, it’s a comfort.
What a wonderful dream visit.
I am very much of the mind that our loved ones visit us.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful dream with us.🤗. I’m an only child who lost both her parents at a very young age. Over the years I’ve had many dreams set in present-day times – long after they were gone – and both appear in my dreams, sometimes just as minor characters in the background, as though they were still alive. I’ve always felt it’s their way of saying, “We are always with you.” ❤️
I’ve had a couple of visitation dreams from loved ones. They are both beautiful and heartbreaking.
I think your Granny was there to help you come to terms with madtownteen’s last day of high school.
That’s a lovely dream, and I’m glad your grandmother still visits you.
Just popping in to say thank you for all you sympathy, guys. I may be absent for a while – had another very long blackout (17hr). Can’t spend a lot of time online.
No scent for me today.
Oh no! Sending good thoughts your way Glannys!
Good luck Glannys
Courage, Glannys. I hope things will get better soon.
I hope you stay safe, my thoughts are with you,
Thinking of you often and wishing you the strength and patience to get through these difficult times. I follow a wonderful veteran American war correspondent, Philip Ittner, who is embedded in Kiev, and he reported yesterday on the numerous outages and the difficulties they caused due to the destruction of many of the power sources there while Ukraine was awaiting the delayed air defense weapons from America. So sorry you have to endure this. – Stay safe! 🤗
Prayers, and thoughts – keep in touch when you can.
Be safe, and be well Glannys! Hugs to you and yours.
We’re thinking of you.
Today I am wearing Givenchy Hot Couture for the Prince song Raspberry Beret, both because it has a raspberry note and because the beret is certainly a hot piece of couture in that song!
Love this! And I love Hot Couture, my favorite raspberry scent.
Wearing CSP Coco Figue today. Love this one in summer! While not beachy per sé, it gives a definite summer vibe, probably because of the coconut. Plus, figs are purple, right? So that’s my very tenuous link to the CP. 😀
Having a very lazy morning. Got up at sunrise, fed doggo early, who then went out to do her business and count prairie dogs, had coffee and toast, now we’re back in bed as I give belly rubs to the baby because she needed some extra love and attention this morning. It’s a hard life!
Thinking of those regular posters who have been absent for whatever reason, or are going through a tough time, and wishing them peace and happiness. ☮️
Sounds like an idyllic morning!
I love your ‘posts from the field.’ Thank you!
Glad that you had some time to chillax this morning!
I’m going for Smell Bent 1999 today. I’m even going to party like it’s 1999, since we’re going to see the rereleased Run Lola Run in the theatre tonight. Ockeghem Teen wanted to watch it a few months ago, but when Mr. O ripped it to the server years ago, he didn’t include the subtitles. So we’ll see it in the theatre with the subtitles. This should be good for all of our German, on the eve of Mr. O heading to Europe.
One of my favourite movies ever! My German was never good enough to understand it without subtitles, and it never will be, but it’s such a great movie.
It doesn’t help that there’s a lot of slang. I can follow it but only because I was immersed for a year in the early ’90s and know some of the slang. (Also I’ve seen it lots of times 🙂 )
Fun! One of my favorite movies, too.
Our previous dog was named Lola, and I used to love to call out to her at the dog park, “run, Lola, run!”
Run, Forrest, Run!
😄
LOL! Our neighbours’ cat is Lola, but she doesn’t generally run, she lolls.
Apparently Frank’s Potente was smoking two packs a day when she made that movie, and did all that running
Even more impressive!
What cats do best.
Oops. That was for ockeghem.
I have the soundtrack for Run Lola Run. It’s dangerous to drive to!
Well, I’m a fail for the CP today. I spritzed De Profundis (because purple juice) from my near-empty decant of the bell jar formulation and discovered it has gone completely off — very plasticky. Eww. Looked at the rest of the possibilities and realized that Encre Noire has some similarity to DP and is strong enough to cover the eww, so that’s my SOTM. Not a bad combination, actually. Hey, happy Friday everyone!
OH NO! on you De Profundis. Bummer
I know! I’m very sad. Shoulda used it up long ago. Sigh.
So sad. 😞 Sorry to hear that, SheriG.
Ugh, so sorry.
I’m back at the hospital but no news yet. Mom is awake and seems fairly good. My experience is that it takes the entire day usually to get discharged. And she’ll need ambulance transport.
My SOTD might be better for Beau Brummel than for Prince: Another Arquiste from my floral sample set, Flor y Canto. It’s very nice, perhaps my favorite of the box I got. I like that this line can make white florals that aren’t overpowering, but realistic and subtle.
Good luck with Mum and you are smelling gorgeous
I hope the discharge goes smoothly and you can get your mum settled back in more familiar surroundings.
Sorry to hear about your mom’s recent difficulties. 🤞Hoping life gets better for her, and you. 🤗
Glad to hear that your Mom seems to be doing well. Hugs!
It’s Lolita Lempicka EdP beside remnants of CHANEL Coco EdP.
They are making a very beautiful cacophony together.
The LL bottle is purple and gold, the two colours I most connect with Prince, and the Coco has that gorgeous old timey perfume growl that makes me think of all the spectacularly gorgeous, talented women he surrounded himself with.
Perfect combo! Hope you are also wearing diamonds and pearls today!
GAH! If only I’d thought of it Kanuka.
Coco EdP is an excellent match for Prince! It has a sense of the baroque that I associate with him.
Hey Jalapeño!
Perfect way to put it.
I’m in Fracas and I think Prince would approve.
Definitely.
For sure, it’s what his 3121 wanted to be when it grew up.
SOTD = Chanel No.5
Today we’re in Isafjordur, Iceland!
We walked into town and experienced small town Iceland. Apparently, someone forgot to email the town as many stores are closed.
Here are two posts I am sharing today. One is of the stately-looking Nieuw Statendam and the other one is caturday-related. Now onto packing 😭!

https://www.instagram.com/p/C764FX2xihK/?igsh=MTlvczM5Nzl3ZmFhdw==
You smell wonderful in no 5!
Love the pictures!
Glad you’re enjoying your trip. When we were in France – I forget which town – we did some wonderful window shopping and would’ve done some real shopping but many of the shops were closed. Yes, very frustrating! Great cat-object photo!
Wow, the Nieuw Statendam is BEEG!
Your trip sounds like so much fun, and I’m enjoying your updates!
I’m wearing Gucci Rush for Little Red Corvette (the bottle color) and Let’s Go Crazy and all the other Prince songs I remember from my clubbing days, in the 80s. Rush was released in 1999 and is supposed to smell of dance floor stimulate drugs aka poppers, which were everywhere in the 80s. So a blast from the past today.
Is your bottle new or vintage?
Vintage, from about 2000. I love it but it is a heavy hitter and lasts forever on my skin so I have to be in the mood for it; I’ve enjoyed it all day.
Excellent match!
Forgot about the CP today and in Tobacco Vanille today. Trying to figure out lunch right now.
Hope you got something good for lunch Dawn! I’m so late you’ve probably had several meals 🙂
To honor Prince, I am in the purple juice of Splendiris.
Excellent.
Joining LizzieB and Desirae with my raspberry beret in Pd’E Eau Suave. Rose and raspberry, done delicately. It’s perfect for a day that started out foggy and overcast, and which is now sunny and breezy. I can feel the humidity being blown away! Later, I may switch to SL de Profundis to honor His Royal Purple Majesty, since I haven’t yet all week.
So, Robin, rest assured that you are not the least creative person here. 🤗
Have a nice weekend, everyone!
Your Pd’E Eau Suave sounds quite pretty!
Thank you for vying for the title, LOL…
In Tubereuse Criminelle, because it was released in 1999 😉.
Plus you smell great!
You smell amaaaaazing!!!
For the song Just another manic Monday written by Prine I waa in AS Saturday which I won here on NST and was sent to me by Robin, a very fruity, happy perfume. This afternoon it was Fico di Amalfi which is green and wonderful with the beautiful citrus of the Blu Mediterraneo line. Tonight I added Magie Noire which I wear much less often than Magie but then I haven’t had it as long as Magie, at the moment enjoying it’s green aspects especially.
AS Saturday is absurdly cheerful. And very good at it, to boot.
I enjoyed it greatly.
I did not know he wrote that song!
It was a good and catchy song wasn’t it.
Not wearing any perfume at the moment (I’m just out of the shower after a very long walk on a very hot day).
I’m on holiday at the moment and spent a lovely day in Lyon yesterday. I’ve been there before (several times in fact) so I didn’t bother visiting any museums.
I did go to a really nice tea shop with a very knowledgable owner and got some gorgeous teas. He pointed out a very old church (one of the two oldest in Lyon (it was built in the 11th century), and it was just stunning. They were actually preparing a concert so I wasn’t supposed to be there but they let me look around anyway.
I also went to the Divine shop, trying to figure out what happened to most of their extraits de parfum. Apparently the only one remaining in production is the original Divine. I ended up getting Spirituelle in edp, which I had wanted in extrait.
It was a day well spent and I didn’t go overboard with the spending either.
Lyon is such a nice city and it sounds like you had a perfect day, doing your own thing.
Sounds wonderful. I ❤️ Lyon!
I love Prince.
Even though I am totally a boomer, there are some artists that grabbed my attention and he was just magic.
I do have a red car, it’s not a Corvette, but that does not stop me from opening the sunroof and jamming out to lets go crazy as I drive up Pacific Coast Hwy.
SOTD post shower will be Gypsy Water.
I love the image of you in your car.🎶
I typed Prince’s favorite perfume in my search engine and an article came up that his favorite fragrance to wear reportedly was Dior Dune a 90’s favorite of mine. I no longer have that perfume. I then thought of purple for obvious reasons, cream for the song Cream, raspberry for Raspberry Beret, red for Little Red Corvette…and then I gave up. I went for Creed Queen of Silk just because it comes in a royal purple bottle I’d like to think he would approve of and the fragrance is big and bold enough.
Good choice and since he was a dandy I’m sure he’d approve of the silk, too.
Christian Dior Dune, because he himself wore it!!
Do you remember how you found this out? You smell wonderful, and Dune is one of the real ten of my top ten. 🙂
Yes! His wife, Mayte, gave an interview to People magazine in 2023 and said this. 🙂
Rather than pair with a song today I opted to try to smell like Prince. I read that he wore Dune, Angel, Samsara, Carolina Herrera, and big white florals. I also read multiple accounts that he smelled like lavender. I thought about wearing Dune, but I ended up going the lavender route with Chanel Boy. I figure that also works in name since Prince subverted gender norms.
Happy Friday all!
Gosh he had good taste! I wouldn’t have thought Dune for him though.
Wow, I have at least three of those perfumes! Thanks for providing that informative list.
I’m wearing Mitsuoko as Nothing Compares to It ( you).
I have a book launch today ( and talk) so am a bit nervous…but so far the reviews have been good. Still, the guillotine will fall sooner or later.
Good luck!
I hope that goes well, I’ve looked at what’s on in Dunedin and see that you’ll be at the public library 🙂
Good luck!👍
Congratulations, that’s so exciting!
How awesome! Good luck!
Congratulations! Hope the launch went well today.
Congratulations!
Congratulations, Kanuka! How wonderful!
Excellent news, go Kanuka!
Congratulations!
For today’s cp, I’m going with ‘Purple Rain’ in the original Anna Sui scent. With its strong purple Iris note and deep purple/black goth-like bottle, it’s like Victorian with an edge. It was released in 1999, another Prince reference. I haven’t worn it in awhile but it’s the first fragrance that came to mind when I read what today’s cp was, and I think it fits well.
Bookending my day with a morning yoga class and a ballgame followed by fireworks tonight on a 🌞 breezy gorgeous day with temps in the mid-70’s and low humidity. I’ll be gardening a lot this weekend amidst the CicadaFest happening at full strength in my yard. But unlike many I’m actually enthralled by it – when I think about these little creatures, who don’t harm humans in any way, spending 17 years in the dark underground and then having just a few weeks to spend in glorious freedom outside before they mate and die, it somehow touches my nature-loving heart and makes me want to help them as much as I can to enjoy these last fleeting days of their life. I’ve been outside a lot lately gardening and have found recently-hatched cicadas unable to fly yet trying to swim in a bird bath and other places they shouldn’t be, and I have rescued them and put them on a tree for safety. Somehow that makes me feel good. And Mr. Laila won a radio contest recently with the correct answer to a news quiz question about a blue-eyed cicada recently found here – and the prize was 2 tickets to see Santana at Ravinia next month. So, thank you, cicadas!🙏
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend ahead!🌳🪳
Good on you! I think cicadas are amazing, too. The loudest insect in the world ( only males sing). And so beautiful up close. We have an alpine cicada that can survive at around 2000metres. So glad you are saving and not squashing them.
https://bugoftheyear.ento.org.nz/2024-bug-of-the-year-nominees/scree-cicada/
Thank you! And I’m only slightly embarrassed to admit that after I put them on the tree for safety I even talk to them a bit as they stare (thanks?) at me with their beady little eyes! And after the females lay eggs on a tree branch, and the eggs hatch, the new little ones crawl into the ground to spend their first 17 years in the darkness – just imagine. Right now they are so loud while we were working in the yard together, Mr. Laila and I had to yell to hear each other in order to converse. I can’t help but think we should all be able to sing so loudly – and proudly! – before we pass from this earth!
It really makes you wonder how evolution could have come up with such a bizarre life-pattern as theirs.
It might sound pretentious but since I have taught both the Iliad and the Odyssey several times (10+?) in freshman western civ classes, I associate cicadas with these beautiful lines from The Iliad:
The two sages, Ucalegon and Antenor, elders of the people, were seated by the Scaean gates, with Priam, Panthoos, Thymoetes, Lampos, Klytios, and Hiketaon of the race of Ares. These were too old to fight, but they were fluent orators, and sat on the tower like cicadas that chirrup delicately from the boughs of some high tree in a wood. When they saw Helen coming towards the tower,
they said softly to one another, “No wonder the Trojans and Achaeans endure so much and so long, for the sake of a woman so marvelously and divinely lovely. There is no sense of nemesis here. Still, fair though she be, let them take her and go, or she will breed sorrow for us and for our children after us.”
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing that
What a beautiful passage. Tell me, who is your favorite translator for these? I know there have been some new ones since I read Robert Graves’s eons ago.
Thank you for sharing this.
Beautiful! 🙏 But I chuckled at ‘cicadas that chirrup delicately;’ mine are in FORTISSIMO mode!😹
Missing the cicadas this summer. I was always psyched to see them when they showed up in NJ. They never bothered me.
How cool is it that they helped you and Mr. Laila score a couple of concert tix?
Oh, I just love the whole cicada story, thank you.
Total fail on the CP, but now that we’re back from our long family trip to France, I’m delighted to be wearing Patricia de Nicolai’s Une Fleur en Mai, a lovely muguet fragrance.
Our oldest got the new job within her company that she really wanted; our second daughter is thriving in her own job change; and our youngest will move into his new, post-college apartment with friends tomorrow. June is off to a good start!
Thanks for sharing Good News June with us! And I envy you your trip to France, would love to go back.
So much good news!
I’m joining the Sunset House gang this morning. I didn’t understand the hype about the house (or Kayali, either) but I liked Sunset Hour. I don’t really care for Prince singing is own songs but I like when others sing them.
Calypso, I know you have a lot on your mind (best wishes to your mother) but when you get a chance can you tell me the anti-frizz stuff’s name? Many thanks!
Now that I am back home for today (I think–no news from today about when Mom will actually be released), I just looked it up. It’s this:
NECTAR THERMIQUE HEAT PROTECTING CREAM
It’s expensive but you only use a minuscule amount, like a dime sized pat, and rub it well through your hair from roots to ends. Bonus: it has a very nice smell. I feel it works very well. (No affiliation.)
https://www.kerastase-usa.com/collections/nutritive/nectar-thermique-heat-protectant.html
Thanks so much!
Do you think it is a paperwork-undone issue holding up your mother’s release or is there something else?
I did hear from the doctor later in the afternoon yesterday (Friday) that she had shown some possible heart problems in the early morning and they were concerned about that. It’s now Saturday morning and I will be going back to the hospital soon, so I hope to hear more later.
Vintage Ysatis, released in 1984. And it came in a purple-ish box, if I’m not mistaken?
I think you are correct about the box. You smell beautiful.
Accento for the beautiful purple bottle
Points 🙂
I’m clearly recovering from my cold, perfume suddenly seemed attractive again last night, so I sprayed liberal amounts of SL’s Ecrin de Fumée. I plan to go out for a walk shortly, I’m looking forward to getting out of the house.
Enjoy! Glad you’re feeling better.
That’s good news! My friend who had the very bad cold recently has gone out to Portland to see her nieces’ (twins) graduations and now she is having a relapse of her cold. She attributes it to tiredness and stress. She is 80 and so perhaps more vulnerable. Just a gentle message to remember not to overdo.
Another GenX’er here, remembering Prince from my teens and 20’s. I recall listening to Purple Rain at high school graduation parties. I have to admit my favorite Prince song is Nothing Compares 2U, though I happen to like the Chris Cornell version best. Not that I don’t like the proper Prince music but that song is spectacular. Prince, Sinead O’Connor and Chris Cornell all passed on.
I had to do some synesthesia to figure out which perfume smells like Prince and his music. I was thinking of Guerlain Insolence for the purple bottle but that would have been rough in the summer heat. I went with Room 1015 Cherry Punk. Leather, cherry seem to fit.
I hadn’t heard the Chris Cornell version until he passed. It made it even more sad.
Yet another member of GenX. When Prince passed away, it was the end of an era. I have so many memories of high school and college locked together with his music.
Deva: after I mentioned prairie dogs and the roads here, I saw one standing in the middle of Colorado Boulevard today when I was coming home from the grocery store!
Experienced driving thru a dust storm for the first time earlier this afternoon. Not a fan. That was a wild ride.
SOTD = Purple Love Smoke EdT from Soivohle. It’s got incense and patchouli and all sorts of florals in it, according to my sniffer. It feels like it encompasses all of Prince’s musical catalogue.
I’ve seen video of those dust storms. Scary!
I sure wasn’t expecting it!
Turned out it was part of a front moving thru the Front Range. Lots of places had 55 – 60mph winds.
How do you even see the road?!
I had limited visibility. It wasn’t nearly as bad as the haboobs you hear about in Arizona.
Just saw a lot of red taillights all of a sudden, and a big wall of dust headed my way. But it thinned out somewhat as it reached my location. I could see all the lanes of traffic on my side of the Interstate.
Your scent is similar to mine today according to Fragrantica so I bet I would like it. It sounds like it might smell like iris, which I know you are not much of a fan of IIRC.
My Zara comes tomorrow. I will let you know how I like this one. If it is not for me then I will get it to you.
Iris is a tricksy note for me. I LOVE No. 19. But some other iris forward fragrances are not my thing.
Hoping you like your new Zara!
Oh, I would have been nervous too.
I wasn’t nervous per se, but definitely on the alert. Some of the box trucks and big rigs were swaying around in a very alarming fashion. Got away from them ASAP!
I am a Genx member. I was not a Prince fan in my youth. It just wasn’t my type of music. Mysteriously though, I have Purple Rain and I think 1999 in my basement record collection. As an adult, I have an appreciation for his music. I went with TM Alien for the cp. Every time I wear Alien I start looking for back ups. It is still my favorite Mugler. ( the new formula is crap though. Heavy ambroxan in it)
Perfect one!
Awesome choice!
Too bad they mucked up Alien with all that ambroxan.
I was diverted from the CP when I saw my vintage teardrop bottle of Safari. I am in a dreamy rose-galbanum scent bubble.
That’s better than points 🙂
Reallllly late for this but I’ve wore ELDO Le Fin de Mode for (party Like It’s) 1999.
I wore. SMH
Perfect!
