Friday scent of the day 7/5

Posted by Robin on 5 July 2024 119 Comments

Happy Friday! It's also National Graham Cracker Day — s'mores, anyone? Birthdays: Jean Cocteau, Bill Watterson. Our community project for today is Cologne part 1: wear a classic citrus-based cologne. (If it helps start you off, see 5 perfumes: (great) old school summer colognes.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm doing day 2 of Eau de Guerlain, just the thing for the hot and sticky weather we're having at the moment.

Reminder: on 7/12, we're doing Cologne part 2: wear a modern citrus-based cologne. (If it helps start you off, see 5 perfumes: (great) new wave summer colognes.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and tgif!
Sotd is the original 4711 Cologne.
I’d love a s’more. Can’t remember the last time I had a proper one. These days I just microwave some chocolate and smear that and some marshmallow fluff on a graham cookie. (I will not admit to pairing it with the occasional vanilla ice cream 😛 )

Is there any cologne more old-school than 4711? I bought a few items at the shop in Köln: they’re all gone now except for a single individual towelette from a box of 10, and I’m just now back from the gym and using the last one. It’s so crisp and refreshing: I don’t know if there’s anything better on a humid summer’s day. I guess I’m going to have to get some more, aren’t I? (Donatella will be pleased — I haven’t spent one cent yet this year.) And has anyone tried the rose one? I’m sort of wondering if I should get that instead. Or in addition to.

I don’t own anything that would count as a classic cologne, so am going classic-adjacent (according to me) in Ninfeo Mio. I would never have know that the gardens that inspired this one even existed, had it not been for NST (the gardens were mentioned in a story when the fragrance launched). Visiting them was magical, and will probably turn out to have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Here’s a link (the website has improved at LOT since I visited in 2013).

NM is one of my summertime favorites. Thanks for that link-the history of the gardens is amazing. It’s nice to know a bit about the inspiration behind a perfume. 🙂

The gardens are spectacular. We were lucky enough to visit on a day when they were not at all crowded. I spent the entire tour feeling as if I’d entered a fairytale.

I’m in (what else?) Eau Sauvage. Still on the hunt for a decent vintage bottle, but the current version is pretty darn good. I was kept up late by what sounded like a professionally done fireworks show — couldn’t see it so I’m guessing it was being launched at a big park over a hill about a mile away. Still pretty loud! Our property survived, and I only heard one big bang nearer by, so it seems the idiot neighbors decided to rein in their idiocy this year. Phew!

Hope everyone still has all their fingers and both hands today! We are under a fire weather watch here. The areas that aren’t being watered crisp and crunch as you walk through them, then turn to dust and blow away.

Still no cologne over here. Instead, I’m wafting the last faint trails of Au Coeur du Desert this morning, which I find mighty pleasing. I’ve always been interested in his Cologne de Maghreb but have never gotten around to sampling. Also, lovely photo in the header again.

    Happy friYAY!

I only smelled it decades ago — seriously like 1985. One of my high-school besties had it — because her dad carried it in his pharmacy. It all seemed so exotic to me then, but I have no memory of the fragrance.

The closest thing I have to a cologne is Jicky and that is what I am wearing today. When I was taking my walk last night, there was a fox coming in my direction. I turned around to book it home. I did see it cross the street and head into the woods. My folks said it probably wouldn’t have hurt me but I wasn’t sure I wanted to get that close to a wild animal.

Not technically a cologne, but am in Fresh Hesperides. Thinking about the cp made me remember one of my dad’s aftershaves:

I couldn’t do an classic cologne, so I went with IUNX’s Splash Forte, a brilliant spicy potion that’s dyed a piquant red. I just love the woosh of the top notes, like opening an ancient spice drawer.

It’s a lovely grapefruit scent; bracing but not terribly long lasting on me. Although it could be the weather that I wear it in. One of my recent Lush kitchen boxes included a Happy Hippy lotion; I may have to pull that out to layer with Pampelune (since it also has a grapefruit note).

I have one decant that I think would have qualified for the cp.
I couldn’t wear it though. I just find old school colognes too masculine for my tastes. Instead I copied ringthing and am wearing Shalimar eau de Cologne. This is one of my great all time deals. I paid 12 dollars on clearance at my local grocery store some years back.
I made one yucky phone call today, with 2 more to make but I will save the others for tomorrow.

Tired today after listening to the elections results late into the night. I was in Eau de Rochas for the CP, the drydown is long-lasting, I’m always struck by it, oldish bottle, I have a vintage too, still fresh. Tonight l’Occitane Ambre Santal which is probably my most beautiful sandalwood made with santal album from Mysore, long discontinued.

So far it reminds me of a Strawberry Shortcake doll…not SS herself but one of her fruity friends…sweet citrus and raspberry w/ musk…wears close to the skin. Reminds me of another perfume that I can’t recall but will update if I think of it. TGIF! 🥳

    TOP: Sage, Bergamot
    MIDDLE: Natural Raspberry
    BASE: Musk

It did albeit briefly! 😄 ehaeheh it was so fleeting…lasted under 2 hrs and mostly was gone in 1 hr I would say. I can’t believe anyone would buy it w/ that abysmal longevity after sampling.

Thank you, Jalapeno! Iordered Parfait d Orchidee yesterday and wanted to see how you liked it please. I can’t stay away from Zara. ehehehe draws me in like a moth to a 🔥 ehaehe I am still updating my perfume spreadsheet for Q2 and House Zara is well represented.

I ended up getting Parfait d Orchidee too. Jalapeno had told me about and then I saw you had gotten it so I had to join the bandwagon.

I am curious what you really thought about Smile. I couldn’t really tell if you liked it. Is it full bottle worth or you?

Yes, I am all in for Zara too…like a moth to a flame 🔥😅I like their bottles, fonts and prices. ehaeheh And they do so many collaborations…so many releases. A real guilty pleasure. I am looking forward to trying Orchidee and your thoughts on it too.

I like Smile but it was soooo fleeting. Was telling lillyjo above…it lasted under 2 hrs and mostly was gone in 1 hr I would say. I can’t believe anyone would buy it w/ that abysmal longevity after sampling. If I bought it blind I’d be ticked…almost seemed like one of those fraiche type perfumes w/ no alcohol or something. In the 5 minutes I smelled it I got citrus, raspberry and musk…but it vanished quickly.

Zara has become an addiction for me lately. Looks like my Orchidee will be here Monday. I think it is my fifth fragrance from there. Two didn’t work for me, but that’s ok. I do have my spreadsheet updated and seems like I am continuously adding to the Zara columns 🤣 I have to stop!

It doesn’t get much more ‘classic’ than a cologne that was launched in 1792, the Original Eau de Cologne 4711, and that’s my choice for today’s cp. My sister-law’s mother-in-law was a German immigrant who only wore 4711, and when she died her collection of several bottles passed on to me. I don’t wear it often but when I do I always think of her; I only met her a few times but she seemed a lovely woman. I never looked up the notes until now – top notes are Lemon, Bergamot and Orange; middle notes are Lavender and Rosemary; base notes are Neroli and Petitgrain; – and I’m surprised that I never noticed lavender or rosemary previously but am definitely smelling them, and enjoying them, now!

Many surrounding communities including ours have had fireworks’ displays and in addition to the plethora of outdoor summer concerts several nearby communities are also having their annual outdoor festivals this weekend, so hopefully🤞weather permitting we’ll get to as many as possible. Tonight we have plans for 2 concerts, one at 6 and one at 9, both in nearby suburbs. Never get tired of these (+trips to the park district pool)!

    Happy Weekend to all!🎶🎵

Wearing Eau de Cologne Impériale Guerlain today. This one always smells lime-y to me, though I don’t think it actually has that note in the formula.

For the CP win, Eau Sauvage. Oakmoss and carnation are the stars for me. I have a vintage-ish mini, and the citrus is not stale, but it is not long-lasting. I’ve enjoyed reading about everyone’s choices. I’m still not sold on the cologne concept, but I do appreciate them more now. Our weather here made it a great week for this CP, BTW.

    Hiya NST!

Back today after being AFK yesterday. There was a flyover by a pair of F-16s in my town yesterday morning. I heard them, but did not see them. However, my brother did! He got a great view of them from his yard in the next town over.

Had lunch with my brother later on in the afternoon. He grilled some steaks. 😋

I was able to watch at least 4 different firework displays along the Front Range while waiting for my local one to start. I was perched on a hill with a most excellent view, parked along the edge of a dirt road. But the traffic back home sucked, big time. Road closures and two-way streets becoming one-way., plus lots of congestion from other folks leaving the area. Fortunately, I knew alternate routes to take.

SOTD = Smell Bent Pepper Ylang. I have zero old school colognes. Not even Jean Nate or 4711. So I wore what I wanted to.

Hooray for your own choice! Good on you that you were able to take alternate routes; if it were me, I would be stuck!

That’s one nice thing about Colorado. Most of the time, alternate routes are available, unless you are in the mountains.

      Sounds like a good day.

BTW I broke down and bought Parfait d Orchidee. I see She-rah said yesterday that she bought it too. We will see how I like that one. I am starting my buying too early in the quarter. I have to wait now after this one until the new Shalimar comes out.

Hope you find Parfait d’Orchidee to your liking!

Now that I have a better idea of what’s happening around here on the 4th, I can plan for next year.

Eh, I consider that a learning experience. As in, I’ve learned what a better route would be to get home. I won’t make the same mistake again!

SOTD = Dior Eau Sauvage Elixir

😱 I did not know there were many iterations of this! This smelled like a classic men’s cologne, short lifespan despite the 8 sprays, but nevertheless good while it lasted!

It is hot and humid today and the rain did not help one bit – it’s the perfect yucky summer weather in Joisey 🥵. I looked back at the old school summer cologne post linked by Robin and took note of my comment that summer should only last one day just to tick off the box of having cycled through the each season.
