Friday scent of the day 1/12

Posted by Robin on 12 January 2024 256 Comments

Happy Friday and happy National Marzipan Day! (Birthdays: John Singer Sargent, Jack London, Ruth Brown.) Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with honey, almond or both.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm taking a point for the almond in Marni Rose.

Reminder: 1/19 is Dolly Parton's birthday! Do what you like with the theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I doubt I will get out of the grocery store today without some marzipan – your yesterday’s and today’s pictures are perfect, Robin. Going for almond points in My Insolence. I always thought I was smelling some type of tonka that did not get too barber shop on me with this one. But in searching for almond, I can see that it somehow tames the tonka in My Insolence. I really enjoyed this CP!

If I saw marzipan as pretty as those pictures, I’d be in a second! Not likely to see it luckily 🙂

It is a great scent! I love it! Unfortunately, it was a limited edition and nowhere to be found, otherwise I would get backup bottles.

I’m so tired of limited editions. I was just thinking that the marketing whiz who came up with this concept had a stroke of pure evil genius.

You say honey, I say SL Miel de Bois. I know it smells urinous to some but I’ve never gotten so much as a whiff of pee: it smells like lush flowers and wood and ladlefuls of honey to me, an extraordinarily beautiful composition. (But I rarely wear it outside the house just in case someone should think I’d wet myself.)

The snowstorm the other day — 6” of snow that turned into hail, then rain, and then froze up — has an exact sequel arriving tomorrow. We’re getting our weekend groceries this afternoon and then hunkering down for a day or two.

I have definitely gotten the whiff of pee but I started out liking it and now I love it.

Enjoy sheltering in place this weekend!

I’m wearing Luctor Et Emergo for the almond. Marzipan is probably the one food that I most anticipate during the winter holidays. I will drive an hour to get to stores that have marzipan anything. Before Christmas last year I got some Marzipan Stollen, and my sister got me a marzipan chocolate bar for Christmas.

Yes it’s snowing like crazy. I live on a hill (more of a slant) and I’ve been watching cars fishtail and slide all afternoon. Looks like you’re in for a lot of snow, lillyjo, stay safe!
When HP first came out, I would smell it at every opportunity bcs I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. It turned into a craving and I bought it. The bottle I have now is about 5 yrs old and it definitely smells like HP.

I’d rather eat a marzipan bar covered in nothing! I love marzipan, and spent a summer in the capital of marzipan, Lübeck (not because of the marzipan, but it was a nice side benefit). But I agree, if chocolate’s involved I’d rather have it on marzipan. 🙂

I had big plans to wear either Chergui or Bois d’Armenie today, but I couldn’t find either sample. Bah! So I gave up and wore what I really wanted to, despite having worn it nearly daily since it arrived — say it with me now: Francesca Bianchi Under My Skin! It’s not like me to go this long without some variety, in my desires if not my reality, so this must be a very special fragrance. I hope it isn’t laced with something illegally addictive. Happy Friday everyone!

I’ll try — it is a very soft, very slightly animalic amber/leather with a not-too-but-a-little-bit powdery iris and other floral notes. On me, at least —ymmv of course. Looks like some commenters on fragrantica get too much cinnamon (I don’t get any) or too much skank (I don’t get any of that either), so perhaps it isn’t a good blind-buy candidate.

I only have one eye open as of now but coffee is in the pipeline so two eyes should be fully open soon!

Bad weather yesterday with winds so strong I ended up pulling over and overnighting in a casino parking lot again. So thankful for these businesses who allow parking like this! Hope everyone who’s is getting tons of snow dumped on them is home and safe and warm! I saw some photos of I40 yesterday and HOLY COW!

I was thinking about which perfume to bust out today as I was giving T-Rex her morning belly rubs. Just looked it up on fragrantica and sure enough it has honey, just as I suspected. It’s listed as “white honey” which I never heard of in my life but, there’s a lot of stuff my brain has not embraced, even at this advanced age. 😀 So, I’m in Vera’s Onda VdE today. Does it get any better?! Nope!

Put my sniffer to good use at a freestanding Sephora yesterday morning and delighted to report no lemmings were born even though I did a good amount of sniffing! For those on a “no buy,” may all your lemmings die a quick death. This is my prayer for you. 🙏🏼

Sotd is Mon Précieux Nectar from a very generous NSTer. The almond, jasmine and orange blossom fit the cp and also happen to be perfect for much colder than usual temps in the PNW.

Your marzipan photos have been wonderful, Robin! Especially yesterday’s: I was staring at those little strawberries for the longest time. And the eggplant. Today, potatoes! 😄 I’ve also been hankering for my favorite marzipan bar, Ritter Sport. Target, here I come.
Today I’m wearing Amouage Journey Woman for the honey note. I don’t think I would have chosen this by just reading the notes (too sweet,) but it’s gorgeous! I will enjoy this sample.

To me Journey is more beeswax than honey, so not as sweet and more amber-honey. Enjoy your Ritter chocolate. I used to eat that when I lived in Germany but I can’t find it here…yum. The hazelnut one was so good, and the marzipan.

That must be it, then. Also, maybe also the saffron it’s supposed to have?
Yes on the hazelnut chocolate, too. My first choice. I think those are the only two they make with dark chocolate. All the rest are milk chocolate, which I don’t care for.
        Are you having summer today?

So cute. Mention of them reminds me of the time we had a momma build a burrow for her babies underneath our shrubbery one year. Our dog discovered them, and we had to build a fence around it so couldn’t get to them. Good thing we noticed them in time!

My intention was to wear Profumum Roma Confetto today for the CP– a beautiful mix of almond, anise, vanilla, musk and amber. But instead, I am joining others and wearing Chergui which has been calling to me all week. Chergui has been a long time off and on love, but I think it’s definitely been more “on” the last few years.

Very cold here in Seattle this weekend but I know it’s even colder elsewhere. Stay warm and safe, everyone!

Due to my stated aversion to marzipan I am not following the CP (Indeed I am amazed at people’s passion for it!). I’m trying another of my free samples from the other day, Mind Games Caissa, which is a kind of pleasant scent that starts out with a licorice note but is now mostly white florals. Later I’m heading out to have lunch at an Indian restaurant and then I’ll visit my mom.

While nothing like what many of you are having or will soon have, our own weather is cold–for us–we’ve gone from 75 yesterday to 55 today. It’s sunny but VERY blustery out. I look forward with pleasure to wearing a sweater and a jacket–after being in one of my old t-shirts yesterday! But good luck to so many of you in this very scary winter situation.

We had a day of summer (30C) which I spent in the garden. I stopped using all weed killer many years ago and so every nook, cranny, crack and flower bed is an oasis for oxalis, clover, dandelions, cleavers, chickweed and aluminium plant . We still don’t have as many moths at night that we had twenty five years ago but have noticed more variety in the insects we do have, including ozone or two native bees which live in the soil and don’t produce honey…they are black and quite small.

Robin, I hope the gym went well. I have been going for two years for weight training now and it’s like keeping a diary or reading a book. It’s a slow and steady business that takes longer than you think for real progress to show, but suddenly you realise you’re 200 pages in and from then on it’s pretty amazing. I also think you can do a lot at home with a couple of sets of dumbbells and some resistance bands once you have a good programme and good form in place ( I use 10kg for sit ups and ab exercises and legs , 8kg for arms and it all works well. Just watch your shoulders, especially doing tricep or arms above the head stuff as they are slow to heal if you hurt your rotator cuff.

Do you also prune and drop, leaving your pruning where they fall? I swear that the more gardening I do the messier everything looks ( as I leave everything for soil cover, insects rather than dragging it away). I came across quite a few huhu beetles yesterday. They are big and beautiful .

I do prune and pickup when I can, lol. My dog races around parts of the yard that haven’t been used in forever. He likes the game, my head doesn’t. So many bugs, ticks, beetles, worms and wasps.
          They aren’t pretty!

          No Huhus here.

I do make a mess, like inside, too.

      Oh good for you Kanuka!

I use resistance bands and kettle balls at home, have for years, and have no problem keeping to a program because I can do that in front of the TV… I get bored sitting watching tv anyway so prefer doing other things while I watch.

Plus, watching people in my family age without adequate muscle mass is frankly very motivating.

But yoga & qigong, those I can’t seem to make myself stick to at home. So I had a lovely time at the gym. I think yoga & qigong are more immediately rewarding than weight lifting, in terms of how happy and relaxed I feel after…and boy do I adore a dry sauna!

I’m one of those marzipan heretics who believes it looks so much better than it tastes, but I am not a fan of almond in food. Or fragrance. So today I’m at the honey end of the spectrum in Guerlain Tobacco Honey. I still like Slowdive better for honey, but this is nice. Today’s snow forecast has been pushed forward 24 hours, we are looking at a snowy Saturday I think. Still no consensus on the amount.

You have Rem Tonka too, I remember you love it. You know me well, I have a 100ml bottle a quarter gone and one BUB, that should be enough.

I had a sample of Rem Tonka, but I am not sure where it is at present. Moving + lots and lots of samples.

The only Reminiscence perfume I have a FB of is Patchouli.

I have several honey and/or almond fragrances I could’ve worn for today’s cp, but I was surprised that one I’d never thought of had an actual ‘marzipan’ note (according to fragrantica) so that’s what I chose for my SOTD, DKNY Pink Macaron from its Sweet Delicious line. Nectarine and kumquat on the top; marzipan, pomegranate and rose midnotes; and a base of tanka, amber and woodsy notes. I’m enjoying it very much – a bit tangy and not too sweet – and I’m claiming extra points for the actual ‘marzipan’ note as well as the marzipan stollen I’ve also been enjoying eating all week!

Winter finally arrived here albeit slowly early this week with colder temps and a bit of snow but today it came with a vengeance. Winter storm warning til tomorrow afternoon will bring us 8-12” of snow and then falling temps to below zero. Already had blizzardlike snow this morning with a bit of respite now but supposed to resume and be worse tonight. Most schools are closed and parks and libraries have cancelled their programs. My library was supposed to have a pop-up winter sale of games and puzzles that I was supposed to help set up today and work tomorrow but luckily that has been postponed. We had a nice busy week with numerous music programs and yoga classes we attended, so I’m more than happy to tuck in for the whole weekend with 📚 and 🎥 and 😻😻😻. Went grocery shopping yesterday so we have plenty of food 🍕🍔🍟🥘🍜🍛.

Wishing everyone a good weekend ahead however you spend it! ☃️

I flew home to San Diego from San Francisco today, thankfully no risk of snow in my travels. Had a good visit with my dad. I brought mom’s ashes with me for our journey north this summer to take her home to where she was born, her final wish.

It is of course – a bittersweet journey, hugs to you.

SOTD is Indochine for the Laotion honey. And my number one don’t ever leave me two bubs favorite fragrance.

I hate marzipan, although perhaps I should say it hates me. Growing up in a German family, I can still smell it and avoid at all costs at Christmas markets.

I have an interview for a one year fellowship for the city of Los Angeles

    Greetings NST!

I have Internet!! So that is my big accomplishment for today. Turns out that I did not do anything wrong in my attempt to set up my router. There were some setting(s) that a tech had to come out and deal. Best of all, no charge for it!

I started to unpack my perfumes this afternoon while waiting. Looks like everything survived just fine on first glance. There are a few things that I will be looking to rehome later on this year.

Today was a “nice” day here for winter weather. It got well into the 30’s here, and the wind died down enough that I was motivated to take out some flattened boxes. Alas, where I live does not have any recycling at all. I cringe a bit each time I toss cardboard into the Dumpster.

SOTD = virtually wearing SL Le Fille de Berlin, from the cute, cute, cute mini that I have of it. This was one of the things I found during the unpacking. I had also considered a virtual spray of Angel EdP for the CP, since I am pretty sure it has honey in it.

What I am actually wearing is more of the Boyfriend Body Creme on my shins. This stuff lasts forever and is potent enough that I don’t need to wear anything else that is scented. I’ve been diluting it 1:1 with unscented lotion.

I think the body creme might be a little stronger than the EdP! That’s part of why I have been mixing it with unscented lotion. On the plus side, the socks in my dirty laundry hamper smell GREAT. 🤣

Right now everything is still in the document boxes. They are safely stowed away in a closet away from heat and light. Pretty sure I would have noticed any breakage. Temperatures were not too warm and not too cold when I moved. Given the time of year, that was a major stroke of luck!

Two hours always makes a difference for me when I go visit family living in your new MST time zone. Please no guilt about not recycling – my parents had the same problem in their complex and it *was* so weird to toss cans, bottles, etc. In time, you will probably find a convenient drop off!! Hope all goes well as you get all the bill-paying, shopping, unpacking, and other settlin’ in done! Hugs to you and scritches for Teflon!!

SOTD is Füm Ariose which is the only almond-centric scent I own. It is lovely, and I am wondering why I don’t wear it more often.

I just recently got through paying my property taxes for 2023. I was surprised to realize that they actually went down this year, even though the valuation of our house went up yet again. Several of the individual tax rates went down, but the biggest factor seems to be that the homestead exemption amount increased significantly, so the school tax is being assessed on a much smaller amount. It’s still a bit of a shock to realize that the current tax valuation of our house is almost four times what we paid for it 24 years ago.

I love marzipan but I have never found any perfume that smells like it. Marzipan is bitter almonds primarily but most perfumes that claim to have its note or even bitter almond note are too cloyingly sweet, especially on my vanilla hating skin. I do have one skincare item that smells exactly like marzipan, though: Le Prunier Plum Beauty Oil, extracted from plum kernels. They even advertise the fact that it has a natural marzipan scent to it and it is spot on.

I recommend you try Eden Botanicals Bitter Almond Essential Oil which does smell like marzipan. I’ve used it in some of my blends. It’s described as sweet, nutty with cherry nuances and smells of marzipan . The “bitter” in bitter almond is a misnomer…the essential oil is actually quite sweet!

Thanks for the recommendation! I think I might have gotten a sample of it from Eden Botanicals at some point, since I used to buy a lot of their essential oils and absolutes and they always toss in a few samples with purchase, but I didn’t get to sniff it at the time and I don’t know where it is, after a recent house move. I will have to try to dig it up, or get a new sample next time I buy something from them.

I get bitter almond at the opening of Kiss Me Intense. Can’t say it’s marzipany, though. I have Jasmins Marzipan from Lancôme and think you’d likely find it too sweet.
