Friday scent of the day 8/30

Posted by Robin on 30 August 2024 141 Comments

Happy Friday, happy National Toasted Marshmallow Day and National Slinky Day, and welcome to Labor Day Weekend! Our community project this week: wear the fragrance you think you probably wore the most — or wish you'd worn the most — for summer 2024 (or if you're in the southern hemisphere, for winter 2024).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

The fragrance I wore the most this summer was an unscented lotion that I have (liberally) doctored with sweet orange and ylang ylang oils. I wear it nearly every day, often underneath whatever other fragrance I am wearing, and I usually reapply in the evening. Right now I'm wearing it underneath Jour d'Hermès.

Reminder: on 9/6 we'll do Jolie Laide Friday...wear a jolie laide perfume, howsoever you wish to interpret the term (for help, though, you can see The Unfairest of Them All at The New York Times.) Suggested by austenfan.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Geez, Labor Day. When I see it written I realize how it snuck up on me just as it does every summer.
I’m in TF Eau de Soleil Blanc which I do wish I’d worn more this summer. The travel spray made it onto my perfume tray for the summer but I just didn’t wear it often enough. I am traveling this weekend, so it’s perfect.
Yesterday was dorm move in day for madtownteen! She is the first of her 3 roommates to arrive (she planned that well😉). We set up her room and spent the evening together for dinner and hanging out as a family. We are in an Airbnb a few blocks from campus. When my husband dropped her off at the dorm last night, we asked her to text us to make sure she got into her room safely. She wasn’t texting for the longest time and then finally replied that she was in safe and sound but got distracted talking and hanging out with some other girls.🥹 Yay! It’s hot and humid here and the lucky kid picked the only dorm on campus with central air.
Today we will head up to the twin cities and get gradtowngirl settled into her apartment and then spend the night there.
    Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Thanks lillyjo! Lol, yes! I had my older daughter distract her so I could sneak it under her pillow. Then I did the same thing today when we moved my older daughter into her apartment. They’ve come to expect them.☺️

I was fascinated to read an article in the NYT recently about the rise in dorm interior designers. Apparently there are people paying THOUSANDS of dollars to kit out their child’s dorm room.

A bit different when I raised my dorm bed in cover blocks!

    Hello and tgif!
Today’s comment will be a long one. Grab some snacks! 😛
First is CP-scent. What I have worn the most this Summer or in fact, the WHOLE YEAR, yes, all 365 days, is Youth Dew deodorant. It is super effective, dries fast and smells great but doesn’t overpower. I have a stock of 9 in my cupboard right now.

Now sotd! It just arrived and I was so excited I could hug the deliveryman. It is Amouage’s lastest: Guidance 46.

    Here is my review.
Have you ever heard of the Blush-red guava? This summer I was introduced to this stunning Chinese variant. The size of the fruit is just between a ping pong ball and tennis ball, the peel is a gorgeous gradient of sunset pink and pastel yellow and the flesh is soft but not mushy. But what makes this guava worth mentioning apart from its appearance is the heady aroma that it gives off. This guava makes its presence known by its potent sillage, easily multiple times stronger than the big green guavas we are used to seeing. The scent is floral, creamy, nectar-sweet, almost intoxicating and undeniably tropical.
Now that I have given you some reference information, I will share my thoughts:
With a perfume concentration of 46%, Guidance 46 is said to be enthralling and beguiling by Amouage. Does this claim appear to be true?
Upon application, the high perfume oil concentration is apparent from the slight oily sheen left on the skin. The scent opens with pears, their juicy, ivory white flesh almost buttery soft and an abundance of blush-red guavas, ripe to their peak, diffusing generously their heady aroma. Surrounding the cornucopia of fruits is a lush bed of roses, red but not yet crimson, pink but not so dainty. The roses are yet in full bloom, only slowly revealing their perfumed hearts as the petals unfurl. Gradually, their scent intensifies, progressively taking over, enveloping, rich and regal, with just a hint of metallic. An elusive veil of sepia haze drifts softly in the background; incense of sandalwood, akigalawood accented with saffron and hazelnut, smoothed with warm, smoky vanilla.

I am absolutely enamoured with this.

I have tested Guidance before and loved it immensely. If it wasn’t sold out when I last visited an Amouage store it’d already be in my collection. Perhaps it’s destiny because upon testing Guidance 46, it is to my nose an even better version and exceeded all my expectations. Aren’t I glad I ordered two bottles of this blind!

I wore CSP Vanille Banane more than anything else this summer (and I know this for a fact, because at the start of the year I set up a spreadsheet to keep track of what I wore and why: shoulda done it years ago). I just put a backup spritz right now and honestly it is the most delightful thing, charmingly artificial banana candy and such a beautiful vanilla drydown. Yet another CSP guaranteed not to offend anyone — even a scent-sensitive co-worker loves it on me — and sure to put me in a good mood.

But I’m in a good mood anyway, because it has been a grimly humid summer, so bad that we had to keep the windows closed and the climate control running for pretty much the whole of it, not usual in eastern Canada, but yesterday and again today it’s been wonderfully temperate, sunny and breezy and in the mid twenties Celsius. (It was 8°C out this morning, about 46°F, but we opened the balcony door wide anyway: that’s Canadians for you.) I don’t know if it’s a harbinger of a nice autumn, but I sure am hoping.

I should do a spreadsheet. Maybe when I get back from vacation. I do have one to track my collection, I just don’t track my b wears. A spreadsheet would remind me to wear things I otherwise forget about. (Sign of overconsumption, clearly, but oh well.)

Astier de Villatte Eau Chic for my contribution to the cp this Friday. This is a wonderful summer perfume – classic citrus/herbal cologne to begin that segues into a very soft tuberose drydown. Uncomplicatedly ,pretty and summery — never harsh or soapy. I love it. And today is the perfect late summer blue skies Seattle day to wear it.

My affections for Lalique’s “Hommage à l’Homme” were rekindled this summer, and it’s probably what I’ve worn more than anything else. It’s got hints of licorice, coffee, and violet candy, with a base of (gentle) woods and musk. Somehow it all works beautifully and elegantly, and it’s quiet enough that I can wear it to the gym without offending anyone. A backup bottle is on its way.😊

Today I’m in Valentino Uomo. Persolaise’s mini-review made it sound intriguing (for a mainstream “masculine,”) so I ordered a bottle, but then noticed here on NST that Kevin did NOT much care for it. I actually think it’s pretty good stuff – a likable combo of Dior (original) Homme and Arpège Pour Homme. If you’re gonna be derivative, might as well borrow from excellent sources!

It’s the smell I remember of picking ripe tomatoes off the vine in my father’s tiny garden plot. Very spicy, which is the tomato leaf, stem, and the almost sticky outside of the ripe tomato.

I have been obsessed with Sora Dora’s Brocéliande this long hot summer. It is not what I would consider a summer scent, but a fresh gourmand. All the citrus up top, lime, lemon, bergamot…then cinnamon, caramel and vanilla and woods. It kinda reminds me of Vero Profumo’s Kiki (that one is more lavender and caramel). I can’t stop wearing it.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend if you’re in the US. Be well, beautifully fragrant people!

Ahhh, Robin you smell fantastic! I chose (to nobody’s surprise) Au Delà Narcisse for today — if I had owned it sooner I would definitely have worn it all summer long. So gorgeous, and from Jalapeño’s advice, also great in cooler weather. I’m afraid I’ll be a bit of a broken record on this one for a while. 😂

    Notes from the outpost-

It’s the last Friday in August and I couldn’t be happier about that. Only a few more weeks to go here and I’m done. It’s been a summer of mixed up messes alternating with some lovely moments, with a big dash is tragedy. We have multiple osprey couples that have raised some kids, one of which likes to sit on the light post by the office and squawk to its sibling and parents as they are flying over fields, teaching the young one to hunt. I’m pretty sure the post sitter’s squawks are demands for takeout, and he is incessant with his requests. The prairie dogs have diminished in such a number that we only see them occasionally now, much to T-Rex’s disappointment. She has caught several mice but no other prairie dogs, so she can’t be blamed for the population decrease. 😬 The pronghorn have the sweetest faces and the babies are so adorable. They are as curious as cats and will slowly walk closer and then do a 180 and jump away like a ballerina executing the most complicated leap if startled. They look pretty healthy going into autumn except for one mom who is trailing twins. She’s a bit slow and her ribs are fairly prominent so I really hope she and her kids make it through the coming winter.
It’s much cooler in the mornings and overnight, but still heats up into the low 80’s most days. Still using the A/C, albeit for much shorter durations during the day. The sunsets are spectacular almost every evening and I’ve been taking sunset photos repeatedly.

As for perfume, it’s been a hodgepodge this summer. With the fluctuations in temperatures, one minute I want a heavy oriental and 5 minutes later I want to be doused in a straight up citrus, hold the sugar, throw in some bitter greens with a dash of Vicks Vapor Rub to cool me down and open up my sinuses. Today. I’m back in another CSP, Coco Figue with its long cool milky dry down.

The holiday weekend started here last night with people yelling and screaming up until about midnight. We do have a campground manager, but he doesn’t have the personality to enforce anything as he is very non-confrontational so basically everyone (campers and staff) do whatever they want. We’ve found people in sites they snuck into and never paid for and all kinds of other shenanigans. But, on the flip side, some folks have been super nice and interesting to speak with. As per usual, the people are what I’ll miss the least…is it me? Am I the problem? Probably…🤣

For those in the US, have a SAFE and happy holiday weekend! Wishing everyone everywhere else some peace and quiet in a very loud and tumultuous world. ✌🏼

It was such compelling marketing at the time. I was definitely seduced by the illustrations and copy. There’s a box in my grandma’s attic somewhere with a dress and a skirt my teenage self bought, and probably never wore enough (because: special) before I grew out of the size. 😂 Probably moth or rat eaten by now.

Pretty quickly after. I’ll have a couple of weeks to decompress and get things together. Lots of details for truck, camper, and dog to address before leaving. I’m sure there will be some bumps in the road but can’t wait to just immerse myself into some history, museums, and seeing amazing sights. And I don’t have to plan ANYTHING, I don’t have to entertain ANYONE, I’m not responsible for ANYTHING-ah, bliss! I just have to sit back and enjoy. Really looking forward to THAT! Also, found a most excellent pair of shoes that are not athletic shoes that I can walk in all day and still look decent enough for dinners out, etc. The shoes were 99.9% of the battle because they are the only ones going with me…🙃

It’s a tour in SW France- the Dordogne River Valley/Périgord, that I’ve had to put off. Was originally scheduled for this past spring, but alas…Anyway, the top draw for me is the prehistoric cave paintings and general history of the area to be learned. (Jumping up and down with excitement and clapping my hands about THAT because I’m a dork🤓) Museums, lectures, medieval towns, wine, gustatory delights…pfft! Can feel the weight increasing as we speak! 😅

Much to my surprise I saw an osprey nest very close to a state highway here in Colorado yesterday afternoon. Didn’t think they were in this part of the US.

Got chilly here last night too! But I won’t be turning on the heat anytime soon.

Today would have been my dearest dads’ 100th Birthday.

Of course, that means that it was 60 years ago today that my sister and I saw the Beatles in concert in Atlantic City on his 40th birthday. Such a special memory.

I’m just sitting here waiting to go to work. It should be a busy shopping weekend. It’s the only thing my customers like to do. They never go anywhere! ( curiously though, they buy a lot of luggage. Lol)
I’m wearing Bath and Bodyworks Coco Paradise. This has to be my most worn Summer fragrance. I have layered it with different perfumes or worn alone. I should have it thunked by the official end of Summer.

It’s been a bit of a mixed summer, June was mostly wonderful, but July and August have been pretty stressful.
I can’t remember which fragrance I wore most frequently, I tend to choose rather randomly. In honour of summer fragrances I’m wearing one of Patricia de Nicolaï’s wonderful eaux, l’Eau à la folie. It feels rather similar to Eau exotique and Eau Turquoise. It’s a great scent and well suited to sunny days.

It feels like it’s been a long winter this year. Lots of dismal grey windy days and fewer frosty sunny days, but yesterday I noticed that the birds are singing again at dawn and dusk, and also heard a kingfisher calling – which is a sure sign of spring. My perfumes are scattered throughout the house, mostly in the bedroom and living room where I work so what I wear tends to be “ considered” first thing in the morning ( Amouage Overture has been my most worn) and then “ opportunist” ( whim) for the rest of the day . Unsurprisingly, heavier perfumes have been worn quite a bit: Mitsuoko, Shalimar and YSL Libre Le Parfum. This past week I’ve worn Le Jardin de Cythere, which I really like for the nuttiness of the pistachio. I’ve also enjoyed Pavillion D’Or and my BFF Daim Blond.

I’m not a fan of most aquatic, tropical or beachy scents, but in the summer I absolutely love marine fragrances – salty sea notes with a touch of citrus and wood are my favorite. I don’t have one most-worn scent but most of what I’ve worn thus summer is from this genre – the original Hermes EdM, JM Wood Sage & Sea Salt, YR Sel d’Azur, Armani Acqua di Gioia. For today’s cp, I’m enjoying EdM Bleue, its salty minimalist notes perfect for the last of a string of yucky weather – right now it’s 83 degrees with a dew point of 72. 🥵

Looking forward to the weekend ahead not only for normal weather resuming. We’ll be celebrating my grandtwins’ 17th 🎂 (how did that happen so fast?) and also a dear friend’s 🎂. Going to the Taste of Polonia tonite for some good Polish food and to see our favorite tribute band, Tributosaurus, perform Police 🎶 ( what makes them so special is they perform the music exactly as it was done by the original group, even down to the instruments used. One time doing a Beatles’ performance, they had to go in search of a base harmonica, which they found in an antique shop!). Also hope to get one last swim in before the pool closes on Monday.

We already enjoyed one great music event this week – a guitar concert with Jim Green, a great guy who plays an amazing finger-style, percussive style of guitar. Even if I didn’t hear the music, watching his fingers fly is fascinating. A Chicago-area native, he moved to Colorado 1-1/2 years ago but returns to his old haunts here in August. He’ll be here til early October then returns to Colorado. See him if you can here or there https://jimgreenmusic.com/home. Lots of videos on his FB page.

Wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

Thanks to the very kind Daniel, I have been sampling a lot of Amouage scents this summer, especially the men’s range, with which I was really unfamiliar. A lot of Amouages aren’t necessarily summer friendly but that didn’t stop me. The one that I’ve worn repeatedly AND is wonderful for summer is Bracken Man. Such a delightful fougere that would work in all seasons!

I don’t count or keep track as some do, but I believe probably MDCI La Ravissante was my most worn fragrance this summer, so I wore it. It might seem a surprising choice, since many in this line are quite heavy, but I find this one just fun and pretty, bright, sexy, happy, juicy. It’s sweet, I acknowledge, but still to me seems tangy, with its combination of floral and fruity notes–especially that pomegranate. And it’s just so darned beautiful. It also carries fun memories for me of when I went shopping with perfume friends (including foxbins) at Fumerie in Portland last year.

In other news, although I have not seen one bit of the 2024 Paralympics, there are stories here and there of life. This one caught my eye specifically because of lack of accessibility outside of the Olympic village. I think that the U.S. has come a long way in advocating for the differently-abled although there are improvements still to be made. As the informal “office manager”, I used to get unsolicited requests for improvement. One of the suggestions was to make the entryway to our floor more accessible. Despite this being a great idea (with the proper precautions, of course), it was rejected because we were leasing the building and it would cost too much. For what it’s worth, I just never had the capacity to pursue this further but if I did, who knows? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Much too hot here today. SOTD is Ananas Fizz from an ancient decant, which I wore not at all this summer, but would have suited heat dome summer quite well.
Most worn, probably a toss up among No 19 edt, the OG PR Metal, and Thé pour Une Été. Punctuated by more than a few spritzes of AA Pamplelune.

    Song of the Day: https://youtu.be/mNKdOhUGQW0

More blue skies here, but temps have crept up to around 90 today. Still rather nice summer weather.

My brother had a procedure done on his one of his legs earlier in the day. The other leg was finished earlier in the month. It was his third to deal with varicose veins and the like. He called to let me know he was fine afterwards. One more to go, then he’ll be done with it all.

SOTD = the other “most worn” perfume of the summer, Dame Perfumery Lime, Gardenia & Benzoin. Plus the lotion I have been wearing all summer, Bliss’ Grapefruit & Aloe Body Butter. I’m trying to thunk that.

For the CP: I wore EL Intuition yesterday. I’ll plead points because I wish I’d worn it more this Summer. It has what I think is Albert Morillas’ signature of making notes airy and in this case it’s the amber. Today I was running in ten different directions and finally spritzed on some VC&A Moonlight Patchouli. I could see wearing that under a Summer full moon. Hope everyone is well. Hi friends, I somehow keep forgetting to comment this week, not thinking about it until it’s way too late for those not in my timezone. So then I just don’t. Anyway! I’m in Un Jardin Apres la Mousson today, one of my big summer favorites and one that I only wore once this summer. I blame it on being out of town when we had our hottest temps here and also too much perfume.

I’m so sad Hermes discontinued this one, but I did just buy a big bottle on Jomashop since they still had it available. Now I can safely use my travel spray with abandon.

Others I wore this week were Chanel Boy – two days in a row in anticipation of my full bottle arriving very soon, No. 5 L’eau, and then Terracotta yesterday for the CP. That’s another summer favorite that I somehow managed to overlook this summer.

So happy for the 3 day weekend!

again and again and again I reach for this decant. So pretty. It always makes me happy. I wore it often this summer, tho sometimes in tiny doses when weather was hot.

The scent I wish I had worn the most this summer is Chanel Eau de Cologne. So perfect, so expensive! And my decant is empty. Until a bottle of the Canel EdC drops from the sky I will enjoy 4711 EdC just as much. 🍋😊🍋

Hermes’ Un Jardin Sur Nil wins the most popular scent of the summer. It’s cheerful, easy wearing and refreshing on even the hottest days.

Yesterday I dropped my youngest daughter off at university and am feeling like I am missing a chunk of my heart ❤️. So of course I went to the mall to have a smell around to cheer me up. I discovered Brunello Cucinelli Pour Femme which entranced me. Overnight (as I cried and moped and worried instead of sleeping) I have been contemplating splurging on a bottle as a special treat. It’s not like anything I own and wondered if anyone has tried it?…Or has any tips for soothing an empty nest heart?😢
