Friday scent of the day 8/9

Posted by Robin on 9 August 2024 253 Comments

It's Friday, plus National Book Lovers Day. Birthdays: Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, P. L. Travers, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Tove Jansson, Michael Kors, Whitney Houston. Our community project for today: we're off to Greece! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Greece, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Greece, or that features a local ingredient, or ? [If you need more ideas, see Plants of Greek Myth links from Glanny's comment on Tuesday.]

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

No points for originality, but I'm in Diptyque Philosykos.

Reminder: 8/16 will be Mood Changer Friday...wear a perfume that instantly changes your mood. Suggested by pixel; possibly a repeat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m in TF Eau de Soleil Blanc, which is what I’d wear if I were on a beautiful beach in Greece. The likelihood of that happening is slim to none, lol. The closest I’ll probably ever get to Greece is when I watched the Durrells of Corfu, one of my favorite shows ever.

Today is my day off but I have a busy day of errands, cleaning, laundry and baking a chocolate cake because tomorrow is grad girl’s 24th birthday! My son is coming over today and tomorrow, he, myself and my h will head north to my parents house for a birthday celebration.🎉 Then! Sunday, madtownteen will come home with us!🤩 She finishes her summer camp job today and will be home until the end of the month when we take her over for her campus move in day. I plan on enjoying every minute with her.🥰

    Hello and tgif!
Twinning with Robin today in Philosykos.
To cheer myself up and forget being ill, I bought a new lipstick – YSL Loveshine Candy Glaze in shade 15, a high shine glossy brown nude. My weakness is anything glossy (no matte for this girl!) and nudes, so this ticked all the right boxes. Only fault is the signature YSL plastic melon balloon scent but nvm, it’s too pretty!

I am wearing L’Artisan Parfumeur Premier Figuier, which literally translates to ‘the first fig tree.’

My connection to the CP is through the myth of Pythalus. He received Demeter in his home during her search for Persephone. As a reward for his hospitality, she gave him the first fig tree.

Hero and king, Phytalus here welcome gave to Demeter,
    August goddess, when first she created fruit of the harvest;
Sacred fig is the name which mortal men have assigned it.
Whence Phytalus and his race have gotten honours immortal.

    (Pausanias)

I am glad there are Greek myths where gods and mortals are actually nice to each other and don’t act like jerks or worse.

When I think Greek perfumery the first thing that comes to mind is mastic, a resin from the island of Chios, which is one of the top notes in the magical 2012 EDP reformulation of Molinard Habanita, so that’s what I’m wearing today. I mean, not that I would actually know what mastic smells like, but I’m taking them at their word. But who needs an excuse to wear Habanita? It’s spectacular.

On day 2 of having no electricity and they are saying we should have it by the 14th at 11pm. I don’t think I will make it that long even though I have a generator to keep the fridge running and to have running water. Thank goodness that I have unlimited data.

I found my decant of Un Jardin à Cythère, so that’s what I’m wearing. Is anyone else disappointed in the recent releases in the Jardin line? I actively dislike Sur la Lagune, and I’m not much more fond of à Cythère. Maybe it’s just the style differences of Nagel and Ellena, but the last Jardin I liked was Monsieur Li.

Hello, all! I’ve been MIA since about May, I think. In June, Mr. SP and I walked the Portuguese Camino. (And yes, despite being super weight conscious of what was in our backpacks, I did carry a small spray vial of fragrance for the post-evening shower: Obvious Un Ete.) It was a wonderful experience (we met so many amazing people) but I am such a homebody — I was happy to return to my house and garden and the SP kids (now grown, but still!). After returning on July 4th, we’ve had non-stop guests at Chez SP. Exhausting, but really fun. We have another camping trip next week.

Oh, and today I’m in Crystal Noir EDT for the fig note for the cp. I’ve missed everyone here and should now be here more often. I’m still spritzing!

Late to tell you, but comet is a Greek word.

Old English cometa, from Latin cometa, from Greek komētēs ‘long-haired (star)’, from komē ‘hair’; reinforced by Old French comete .

I wish I could do the CP by wearing some perfume with an oleander note. When I was in Greece I was really just knocked out by the wonderful smell of pink oleanders everywhere, including in the ancient agora. (A lot of Athens smells like diesel fumes; the contrast between the modern city and the ancient ruin sites is very strong.) Here in Houston we also have many oleanders and yet they never have any smell at all. It’s why I was so surprised to smell that narcotic scent of the pink bushes there. I just checked fragrantica and yes there are indeed some fragrances there listed as having an oleander smell. I must check them out sometime. I can’t quite describe it except that it smelled rather sweet and waxy, very strong. Maybe elsewhere in the Mediterranean they also have those flowers? As for today, I’ll choose something later, but right now I am sporting the pleasant but somewhat simple smell of Aesop hand balm in the scent Eleos, described as having cedar, clove, and patchouli. It’s a Greek name although I don’t quite get the allusion since it’s got to do with mercy or pity (as in kyrios eleison, have pity on them).

Have you ever watched the British historian Bethany Hughes series that follows the Odyssey. It must be five or so years ago but was very interesting, for all the temples and background. It’s probably on You Tube or some streaming channel. Or for humour, the Michael Winterbottom movie The Trip ( Greece) with Steve Coogan that also traces the route , visiting temples etc and restaurants…heavy on banter and impersonations but good ( Netflix).

I’ve had covid all week, my husband got it a couple of days after I did but thankfully my mother didn’t get it. So my perfume wearing has been nil, but today I’m wearing a tiny spritz of Un Jardin en Mediterranee for the CP.
I did have a weird covid smell thing happen on day 2: I got the smell of French’s yellow mustard in my head and it wouldn’t budge, I even saw mustard on bread when I shut my eyes. It only lasted a day, I’m glad it’s gone! I like mustard on hot dogs or ham but that’s about it.

I hope everything is back to normal soon! Covid can do weird things to your sense of smell: when I got it last October I could barely smell anything for a while, and then it gradually came back. My husband’s olfaction is severely diminished almost a year later, and occasionally he gets odd phantom odours like gasoline or garbage (and always consults with me to make sure they’re not real). Luckily for him, he never did much care for having a sense of smell to begin with — more things bother him than not — and he doesn’t much miss it, plus I get to wear pretty much whatever scent I want without bothering him, so in an awful way it’s win-win.

I’m taking points in Dior Escale a Portofino, as it has notes of juniper and cypress, along with lemon and almond. Apparently both cypress and juniper were sacred to both Apollo and Artemis, and there’s a Greek story about how the almond tree came to be that oogied me out a little, but still. 😆 And I’m sure lemons grow in Greece somewhere.

Oh yes – maybe I should have given a NSFW warning. Sorry everyone. That almond tree myth is something. I first learned about it this week myself and was like – 🤔🫢It is interesting, by the way, to note the role of nuts in the myth and compare it to the modern usage of the word “nuts” in English.

Like ringthing, I have COVID (thanks, academic conference). I am on the mend but yesterday became 100% anosmic. Today both taste and smell are ever-so-slightly present, which I take as a good sign.

So, no fragrance for me. This is my first time getting COVID — the current strain has hit quite a few of my “never had it” friends and relatives.

Pouring rain here, with both rain and wind picking up strength. We are far away from the brunt of Debby, but still concern about safety/flooding/power outages.

Feel better, skalolazka! I got it the very end of June for the first time (to my knowledge) as well. I lost my sense of smell towards the end…maybe day 4 when I was feeling much better and had no temp. It was mostly restored in about 3 or 4 days after that. I read some recent research, which I may not be getting the full details of of entirely correct, that said it takes a 2-3 weeks for the cells to be restored so the olfactory neurons work properly again.

Yes, that’s what I’ve read, too. I was texting this morning with our daughter, who reminded me that she, too, lost taste/smell from it but regained both completely in that same 2-3-week window. It was just such a shock for it to be GONE — I was spraying perfumes and getting zilch. And perceiving only textures when I ate (admittedly, low sodium chicken broth and toast are hardly flavor explosions even under ideal circumstances).

I know little about Greece and have never visited there but I’d love to! When I think of that country, I think of all the beautiful sea that surrounds it, 🌞 and warmth, good food and wine (and ouzo?), and ‘a peaceful, easy feeling’ as one of my favorite Eagles songs goes.

To that end, I’ve chosen one of Yves Rocher’s annual summer scents from 2014 for today’s cp, Collection Été. A breezy, citrusy aquatic, even its bottle – sea blue with a yellow cap – exemplifies my vision of Greece.👍

We’re off for the weekend to a folkfest 🎶on an organic farm in the gently rolling countryside of sw WIsconsin. Waving to madtowngirl as we pass by. 👋

Wishing a beautiful weekend ahead to all ☀️ 🌊

I’ve been to Greece as part of a cruise. The most beautiful place was Santorini, but alas, when I traverse a new place, I usually get lost … and I did. Since I was on a Holland America cruise, they had to wait for me 😅.

Can’t believe I’m CP compliant but I completely forgot about a partial bottle of Korres Saffron Amber Cardamom I got in a swap. While the weather isn’t the best right now to really showcase it, it IS lovely and will be even more enjoyable when the weather cools down a bit. I was cleaning out and rehoming my perfume stash last night which is when I came across the Korres bottle and my little brain went DING DING DING! Community Project Compliant!

While I was reorganizing I found some bottles that had a bit of old leakage around the spray mechanism, mostly scents I hadn’t used in a while. Anyway, I partially depressed the spritzer and a little “ffffft” of air came out. It must be because of the changes in altitude as I drive around and pressure had built up in some. Anyway, I tested them all and gave each one a partial spritz and heard a lot more “Ffffts.” I hope they are all a bit happier now that the bottle is not pressurized. I’m imaging these bottles now feeling like a woman who has home after a long workday and the instant relief of whipping off her bra. 😂

Thanks to all for the packing hacks yesterday. I’ll definitely be utilizing many of them. ✈️

I had some perfume bottles do the Ffffft thing too. I haven’t sprayed all of them yet; that’s gonna take a while. Also figured it was due to changes in altitude.

I am not participating in the CP today. It is still cool here so went with another scent I would wear in the Fall or Winter. SOTD is Zara Parfait d’Oridee by Jo Malone. I originally tried it in the heat and sprayed way too heavy handed. Today I sprayed a little lighter and I like it better. IMHO it smells almost identical to Vanille Insensee.

I was going to pick something that was really on the nose: Strange Invisible Perfumes Peloponnesian. The SIP perfumer, Alexandra Balahoutis, is Greek-American and her roots are reflected in many of her perfumes, and this one is very direct and beautiful homage to Greek islands.. but as I was looking for my bottle of Peloponnesian, I saw few bottles of SIP Zodiac collection and my sign, Aquarius, right on top and I decided to wear that instead. It’s such a perfect blend of neroli, herbal notes and incense. I really need to wear it more often. The concept of Zodiac signs as a whole is rooted in Greek myths. Points for me on several fronts, I think!

Having lived in Greece for almost three years in the late 70s I have many reminders of the smells.

The one that I immediately summon up is the smell of the pine trees in northern Greece as one drives through the mountains to get to the beaches of Halkidiki. We would sleep in our VW van and no one was there.

The pine scent would then be retsina. I can also smell licorice from Metaxa and Ouzo at long lovely dinners at tavernas where if you stayed long enough into the night, dancing and plate smashing would ensue.

Then basil and oregano outside my kitchen door.

I can smell fresh feta, peaches and tomatoes at the market.

I cried the whole way home when we left.
Since my sister and I have made the agreement we don’t want to live together in retirement I am planning to go to Greece to see about their golden visa program, along with a few other places I have been researching.

My SOTD post shower will be OJ Damask as I really have no fragrance that reminds me of Greece and I am not a fig scent lover.

I have been lucky to have traveled to over 150 countries and I can say with all honesty, the light over Santorini was like no where else I have ever been.

Greece wasn’t even in what used to be the European Common Market?

My then husband lived there when he was a little boy – his father was in the State Department they went from posting to posting. Five boys all born in differnet countries.
So he spoke fluent Greek and it was so easy to travel there then.

The islands were not so crowded and we would often stay at people homes in spare bedrooms for a few drachmas and have breakfast with the families before traveling on.

Back in the early 80s my boyfriend and I flew into Athens with a tandem bicycle and set off biking across Greece ( then Italy, Switzerland, France). I have very vivid memories of negotiating the busy streets of Athens, trying to navigate …me on the back seat with a folded map , and the joy of getting out of the city and onto quieter roads. One of the highlights of each day ( apart from finding a place to put up our tent) was the daily stop at a bakery, where I had the best doughnuts I have ever tasted. They were light and crispy, and honeyed and we usually just sat on the kerb eating them. Campsites were basic, usually just hidden in bushes. I also remember the rudimentary toilets that couldn’t flush used paper, so there were overflowing buckets of used toilet paper. There were so many interesting things to see, travelling at bike speed, and scents. Anyway, for the smell of the doughnuts and the idea of a bike, I’m wearing Let the Good Times Roll.

I went with Greek mythology and am wearing DKNY’s Be Delicious for the Golden Apple of Dischord and its role in the Trojan War. I read Natalie Haynes’s Pandora’s Jar a few years ago, and her analysis of what really started the Trojan War, and how blaming Helen of Troy is unfair when there were so many factors, has become my “Roman Empire.” So much so that I got myself a golden apple paperweight addressed “To the Fairest” that I keep on my desk and I really do think about it almost everyday.

Tea today is a double bergamot earl grayfor some sunshine in my mug since there is no sunshine outside. Fingers crossed for nice weather this weekend. My vegetable garden is in dire need of pruning.

Thank you Lillyjo, I’ve had it for several years but rarely wear it, it’s a small 30ml and it’s pretty much hidden in a large box on the balcony with other classic vintage perfumes. It smells quite wonderful.

I’m wearing my most Greek perfume, Sillage Royal from Manos Gerakinis. I bought it in Athens last year. The notes aren’t reminiscent of Greece, so I’ll see if I can think of something else when I go out later.

I was having a hard time deciding between wearing an old favorite and a new sample, so I’m wearing both! On my right arm is Philosykos. On my left arm is Arquiste A Grove by the Sea. This Arquiste is really nice and pretty perfect for the CP. It’s inspired by the Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean region and includes figs, olives, cypress, and lots more. It has a mineral and briny quality early on paired with the figs, which tones down over time. I’m ready for my (pretend) trip to Greece now!

    SOTD = Hermes Iris Pallida

I’ve joined however many here are wearing Hermes. For me, it’s because I am lazy and did not feel like deciding which of the “des Merveilles” perfumes to wear. I haven’t worn this in quite a while and it is lovely as ever!

We’re supposed to be getting parts of TropicalStormHurricane Debby but so far, it just feels very humid with occasional sprinkles of rain. I’ll take it but I am so looking forward to Fall weather!

For those still reading, I just got word that starting September, my Netflix will go down in price if I want to have the subscription that comes with ads. I believe I can upgrade for $3-4 more per month (need to check) for the ad-free version. Is your subscription ad-free?

It’s so odd seeing my name in print all over (and not in a positive way!) — I spell my name just like that with a ‘y’ which is not the most common way to spell it.

Annoying news about Netflix. We already get ads with our Amazon Prime subscription.

Hiram Green Dilletante today, and I sell pretty! I not sure it has any connection to Greece, but Ioved reading all the great recollections and experiences related to Greece! I am in the midst of getting adorable hubby and me self new passports, since we both have lost our old ones somewhere or other. Going to start traveling in earnest soon here. My interest in ancient history keeps growing, and Greece is a treasure trove of holidtiry.

Joining the CP today in a lucky find – a sample of PG L’Eau de Circe. I like this one very much. Unlike the styles I usually wear, this is a fruity floral (although it’s described as an oriental floral on Fragrantica.) This always reminded me of Robert Piguet Calypso, which is another pretty one. How funny that I never noticed the name connection before. 🤔
Hope you all have a great weekend. I’ll be looking forward to having sweet dreams of a fantasy Greece tonight.

I am so sleepy today, probably a combo of heat and smoky skies.

Another cool and damp day here in CO. I haven’t needed the A/C for the past 2 days. Summer heat is lurking in the 10 day forecast, though.

So, for the folks who slogged thru my post yesterday, yes, I did have a good time at my class reunion. And I would definitely fly the airline I was on again. Great customer service and comfy seats, which is more than I can say for the budget airline I’ve been flying for the past decade or so.

SOTD = Korres Philosia EdT, from The Sample Stash. It was in one of those odd “ketchup packet samples” that Vee had mentioned a while ago. Lots of citrus topnotes that disappear in a flash, then pine and eucalyptus. It finally settles into a camphoraceous patchouli scent.

The biggest surprise was connecting with someone who had been in my homeroom during junior high. He remembered me, but went to a different high school than I did.

I was quite shocked. “Shy” and “smart” were used a lot to describe me back then.

it was at a joint reunion event that 2 of the 3 high schools in town were holding.

That scent sounds quite interesting. When Korres still distributed in the US market, they put out some very wearable, if not remarkable, scents. Plus body stuff. And makeup! I used to love their powder foundation.

I haven’t seen Korres in any brick & mortar stores for a while, but they have a US website that I order their body butters and showergels from. And one of their skincare products has become a new staple for me.

The Korres showergels aren’t particularly drying to me. But I also lotion up with an AHA lotion after showering. Got into that habit in my 30’s.

Maybe the new shower oils would work for you? I haven’t tried them TBH.
