Friday scent of the day 8/23

Posted by Robin on 23 August 2024 178 Comments

It's Friday, National Sponge Cake Day and the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. And around here, it's Cypress Friday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with a cypress note.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in good old Diptyque Tam Dao.

Reminder:  on 8/30, for the start of Labor Day Weekend in the US, wear the fragrance you think you probably wore the most — or wish you'd worn the most — for summer 2024 (or if you're in the southern hemisphere, for winter 2024).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello and tgif!
Twinning with Robin in Tam Dao.
For breakfast today, it’s figs with Greek yoghurt and a swirl of honey and a bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar, maple syrup and crushed pecans. Definitely satisfied my sweet tooth and gave me enough energy to run a marathon.

Rather a lot, as in me too! A perfume fiend friend from out of town was visiting last week, and in her sample bag to me was Tam Dao. Must be fate…

Your breakfast sounds delicious! I’ve been hooked lately on a mix of Greek yogurt with honey, topped with maple pecan granola. Sounds like my sweet tooth aligns with yours!

Twins!🙌 I didn’t think I’d have anything for the cp but scrolled through the list on fragrantica, and there it was, an old favorite Tam Dao. One of the few perfumes I’ve actually replaced.
I was up for 6 am barre class and the mornings are definitely getting darker. I’m loving the cool mornings but I hear more heat is on the way.
I am singing The Go-Go’s this morning because today is the first day of my vacation, all I ever wanted.🎶 Off til the Tuesday after Labor Day. The end of next week will be crazy busy. We’ll move madtownteen into the dorms, get gradtowngirl back to the twin cities, an overnight visit with my cousin, baby shower for another cousin, an overnight visit with my favorite auntie, then back home. Whew. I’ll need a vacation from my vacation. lol.
Six more nights with madtownteen at home, and I seem to be doing *okay*. Better than I did in 2018 when we took gradtowngirl off to uni. Although I remember thinking at the time that we would have all this time with just the baby at home to enjoy her, and now in the blink of an eye it has come to an end. (swallows lump in throat)
She and I have haircuts, ladies day shopping and lunch today. Trying to squeeze in all the time with her I can.☺️

I went through the complete list of scents with cypress in them on Fragrantica and I don’t have a single one. I’m pretty sure I don’t even know what it smells like: I can identify sandalwood, cedar, and pine pretty readily, but after that I don’t think I could ever pick a specific wood out of a lineup.

So let’s go with this instead: “I thought you said Cyprus! And the French name for Cyprus is Chypre, so I’m wearing Guerlain Mitsouko edt, the quintessential oakmossy chypre. I hope that’s okay!” (It’s definitely okay by me. Mitsouko is never the wrong answer as far as I’m concerned. Not a splinter of wood to be found in it, though.)

A “Mitsouko is Never Wrong” t-shirt could be a big seller among the perfume crowd, although possibly confusing to others (“Is she an influencer?”)

Acqua di Parma Cipresso di Toscana. I claim extra points for “cypress” in the name.

The new fridge works fine, thank you for your support. You know, I sometimes see videos asking, “If you could meet yourself 10 years ago, what advice would you give yourself?” I’m not particularly interested in meeting my past self from 10 years ago, as I feel I would have to explain a lot and might miss out on important experiences if I tried to change my past that far back. However, I would love to be able to send myself messages just one month into the past: “Glynnys, your fridge will break in a month. This is the kind of fridge you need to look for. Start doing it now.”

I’m glad you mentioned this, because I was thinking I didn’t have any cypress perfumes for the CP! But I have this, so I am now a triplet with you two. Like some others here though, I honestly do not know what the cypress note itself smells like, and there are so many notes listed in this that I don’t know which one it might be. But I do know I smell pretty!

I love cypruss essential oil and I love it as a perfume note and I was planning to wear one of my big favorites, Goutal’s Eau de Hadrien. This was one of the scents that got me into perfumery as a whole. I loved how different and original it was, the unisex concept was new back then and right up my alley and I wore it as my signature scent for a long while. I still have few bottles of that good ol’ vintage stuff, before the citrus notes were tamed down and it started smelling like a bathroom cleaner. But when I went to look this morning, I could not find any of my EdT bottles. What I found instead was a small box of Goutal samples which included Hadrien Absolu so I am wearing it now. It’s smells great, with a beautiful and distinct cypress note but it’s rather subdued skin scent, and I am craving that blast from the past with in your face lemon followed by all that green shrubbery so I will have to find the EdT bottles later today.

Lots of drama for ChezMossy world, as our 70+’ tall, 2/3 dead oak tree comes down today. You should hear the *thuds!* as branches and pieces hit the ground. The tree is about 30′ from our and our neighbor’s house, and part of the work has to be done in her yard. Prayers have been said for everyone’s safety. A bright spot is that there are no nests or nest holes in the tree. Woodpeckers and squirrels loved it, but they liked the neighbor’s soft maple better for cavity-making. 🙂 The tree’s removal will make a big difference in the temps. and moisture for our house. We will not plant another forest-type tree in the spot, but maybe an evergreen like a magnolia or holly. For the CP: Gucci Guilty Absolute pour femme. Fruity and strong cypress/wood notes to my nose with an airy, clean patchouli fluffing it up. It’s perhaps a ditzy perfume, and this tree work has me in a dither, so I am enjoying it.

Yes, and of course our perfume-wearing friends. I am always tickled to smell any sort of perfume in the wild, even a doubtful, beast-mode masculine! The tree crew has one last difficult branch (how did I never notice how far it extended over our house???) Then they will work on the bole.

That’s quite a tree! It’s always sad when one dies. We lost a maple tree, I think all the cold winter weather the last 2 years finally did it in.

I hope all goes well with the removal.

Thanks, Gail – so far, so good. I think ours was at the natural end for a pin oak. They do not live as long as some oaks. It will be very strange not to rake up 25 or so big bags of leaves this fall!

I was very sad when our huge old white oak in our back yard died and had to come down. The arborist said he thought it was about 140 years old, based on the rings. We still have one huge water oak in our front yard, and the neighbors behind us have three white oaks that are probably about the same age ours was (over a century old). They seem to be staying healthy, though!

The absence of our own white oak has made our back garden much sunnier, so my consolation prize is that I can now grow roses there. It’s still quite shady in the late afternoon, which the roses actually appreciate, since it’s very hot here and they get lots of direct sun all morning. It will be interesting for you to observe the new microclimate and decide what to plant there!

I’m joining the others who are wearing Tam Dao. Today I’ll be making my famous-in-the-SP-family peach coconut cake for youngest son’s birthday. He has a 1 year old now himself, but still requests the cake. :D.

Yesterday was a bad day. Had my annual check-up and have several things going on. I think I can deal with all of them, but it’s the anxiety around health issues that is difficult. Anyway, onward!

Agree! They are definitely similar. And I will say the Estée Lauder fragrances held up well to reformulation. I recently bought White Linen for fear it would be discontinued now that it’s been “ updated”. I’m so happy with my $38 bottle 😂. Smells as good as I remember when I wore it in the 1970s!

Chilly here again, so I bright out the Amber Oud. I read somewhere that this doesn’t have any Oud in it, but has an “our accord”! That is actually reassuring because it smells really good on me, I think, but I never smell any Oud! Just a fairly sweet ambery spicy thing, good for cool weather.

Two nectarines and four strawberries but more before going to bed. It was Liz Earle essence No 1 today, a very invigorating scent which is not talked about enough, it has cedar and is 98% natural but for the CP tonight it’s vintage Calèche, always a treat.

I will be participating in probably none of the CPs for the next four months, as I only have a small selection of my travel decants here in Europe with me and an even smaller selection in my suitcase on vacation. I’ve been living in a lot of You or Someone Like You because it’s been so darned hot — 40C on our first full day in Bilbao, and now we’re finishing up with 37C today and tomorrow in Seville. At least there should be fewer hills to climb here than in Lisbon, though tonight we’re doing a tour of the cathedral and roof, and it’s 33C still.

I’ve been reading along as I have a chance, but haven’t been able to drop in that often this summer. I’m hoping that will change soon!

And the chocolate y churros. And the jambon! And the flan. When I worked on the airbase in Cadiz, my roommates and I would go to the local hangout and have flan y helado on hot summer evenings. We went to a little road side bar with a dirt floor and donkeys tethered out back, where the local teenagers would come to practice flamenco, sometimes playing records on a little red suitcase record player, sometimes with a kid playing guitar, for the tortillas and water glasses of red wine. The best chocolate y churros were to be had at a cafe around the corner from the American Express office in Madrid. The churros were huge, almost as big around as my wrist, and the chocolate was as thick as pudding. We would eat those for breakfast and watch the truck drivers leave their delivery trucks idling in the street while they came in and belted down an espresso and a juice glass of gin for breakfast. Ah. Sorry, back to your story..,

After much searching for a fragrance with a cypress note I found I indeed had one, one I’d forgotten I had! SOTD is the little-known Revlon Skinlights from way back in 2001, part of their Skinlights makeup collection. Soft yet refreshing, it’s light and citrusy with some nice spicy accents – ginger, sage and cardamom. Can’t remember the last time I wore it but as soon as I put it on I remembered how much I enjoyed its ginger note. (And, yes, cypress is listed as a top note. 😅 )

Happy birthday to my furbabies this week! The 2 sisters 😻😻are 9; our friends adopted their pregnant mom who gave birth to 5 kittens and we adopted the 2 girls. And their ‘baby’ sister 😽- I can’t believe it’s been nearly 6 years since I found her at age 3 weeks wobbling in my backyard. Unsuccessful in finding her mom and unable to find a home for her, of course I wound up adopting her. She would’ve been born around the same day as the 2 Sisters, so we celebrate all of them at the same time! 🥳

A new monthly program at my library this year, Global Neighbors, features musicians with traditional instruments, dancers, the culture and food samples from other countries. Thus far it has featured Peru, Ukraine, India, and last nite, Arab countries. The music was beautiful and haunting, the traditional instruments fascinating, and the refreshments served by a nearby Arab-owned organic coffeehouse delicious. Best of all was the connection I made with an older Arab gentleman who appreciated our attendance and interest in his culture. We hugged and wished each other peace, and it was beautiful way to end a lovely evening.

Wishing all NST’ers ☮️ in the days ahead, however and wherever you can find it. ✌️

Thank you, that was lovely! Several of the musicians had no Arab heritage but came to the music in different ways. One of them was a woman who was a classically-trained flute player who was playing a very simple reed instrument of ancient lineage and it sounded very similar to the Māori nose flutes but was played with different parts of the mouth.

I’m at my relative’s house in Central Otago, the stoic centre of NZ. Despite getting below zero , this house has ( literally) one heater, which is in the living room . I can see my breath as I write this from my bed, under two thick duvets. But it’s going to be sunny, and the snowy hills look beautiful. No blossom yet, and no daffodils…so a few weeks behind coastal Otago. I have a little sample of Hwyl for the cp, a moistened towelette thing. But I can see a huge cypress from my window so taking points for nature. Send heat, I’m dying down here.

We are experiencing the joy of a sunny Saturday morning. Last night was horrible wind and rain, this is the time of year when we oscillate wildly between winter and spring.
With so many mentions of Tam Dao, I will see if our local Mecca has it in stock. I know I’ve tried it before, but I can’t remember it.
Meanwhile, I’m trying another of my last batch of samples, Oranger Sirocco from Les Indémodables. It’s a nice orange blossom, but it doesn’t stand out from others.

At the beginning of this week I was convinced that I didn’t have a single scent with cypress in it.

However, with both Deva and hajusuuri mentioning SSS perfumes had me looking up perfume notes on the travel sprays I have. Lo and behold, there was one that actually fit the CP. But I was not in the mood to wear Fireside Intense today after smelling wildfire smoke yesterday.

SOTD = YSL Black Opium Neon EdP. I decided to try my new bottle that I picked up during my travels earlier this month. The floral notes are rather short lived, and it becomes a lighter, fruitier version of the OG scent. I think I need to try this one in cooler weather; it was a bit much for temps near 90.

You smell wonderful! I could’ve worn that today but didn’t see it listed on fragrantica as having a cypress note. I will wear it tomorrow, I love this one!

I recently learned by someone here that you’ll get a longer results list on Fragrantica if you select Search by Notes from the menu instead of just the one that says Notes. It’s helped a lot during community projects since I found out to do that. And you’ll smell great tomorrow. 😉

I missed that tip. Thank you! I always wondered why their notes list seemed so limited.

Good idea to post that tip. I do always use search by notes but didn’t see Les Nuits listed, but perhaps I just overlooked it.

    sotd = CdG Sequoia 🌲

I’m CP adjacent because I love the smell of redwoods –

    – and I’m super late but wanted to fly by and share how much I enjoyed everyone’s choices today! 😍

gosh, I’m ready to weekend 😴

wishing everyone a super smelly scented Saturday and Sunday.
