Friday scent of the day 10/20

Posted by Robin on 20 October 2017 334 Comments

Jean Paul Gaultier

Happy Reeking Havoc Friday! Our community project for today: in honor of Holly (who is frequently reeking havoc), wear as many perfume samples at once as you can stand. Thanks to FearsMice for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am only wearing 3 so I am sure I won't win this challenge, but I do reek. I'm wearing Jean Paul Gaultier Le Mâle, Ma Dame and Scandal. I was going to put on Classique too, but as it is I can hardly stand myself.

Reminder: 10/27 will be Guessing Game Friday. Describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is one of the 12 Jean Paul Gaultier €10 limited edition coins issued by Monnaie de Paris this year.

On right inner wrist: “Kitchen Sink”- A while ago I had made four separate e.o. perfume blends from sample vials and bottles from Eden featuring four prominent notes- Osmanthus, Immortelle, Tuberose and Fir Balsam. I impulsively dumped them all into one vat, added some of my homemade vanilla bean oil and topped it off with orange essence e.o. Given that each separate blend contained approximately 10+ different oils with one having an amber blend that was comprised of 30+ oils I am guessing Kitchen Sink has about 70 e.o.s in it.

On left inner wrist: “Vanilla Fiend”. Younger CM8 combined all samples that either had the word vanilla in them or smelled vanilla-ish to her. 30 or so samples in a 1oz bottle that she topped off with dark patchouli and lavender absolute (two other notes she loves)
The middle child always marches to the beat of her own drum.

On top of right hand: Siano topped off with Greylocke topped off with Hanami topped off with Olmsted & Vaux. I have come to the conclusion that Phlurs are meant to be layered as this smells so good.

On top of left hand the pineapple goodness of Midnight Fleur. Younger CM8 has the original vintage bottle from 2012 and it has aged beautifully. Thanks to jalapeno for the suggestion of wearing it in cooler weather.

    Happy (f) reeking Friday!!!!

hajusuuri and Holly have the original four separate perfume oils before I combined them…you can hit them up for samples/testings if/ when you see them :)

and younger CM8 loves her Vanilla Fiend so much that I was lucky enough for her to allow me one spray this morning !

Wanted to respond to your comment from yesterday…i don’t think it was L”heure Bleue (but I could see why you would think so)…it was a bit more powdery…it was probably some obscure fragrance that was d/c a long time ago!

Honestly, it isn’t as bad as it sounds…I applied only one spray to each part of my body and only one tiny drop of the oil…it is several hours later and I can barely detect a thing.

actually that is not true…the Phlurs are one spray of each so that is 4 sprays…but they really do blend nicely together…it is/was a greenish citrus vibe..i tested it last night before applying it this morning (in case it was disastrous) and the drydown on my robe this morning was gorgeous.

Now I feel justified not even to try to “beat” you: somebody has to maintain a balance in the Universe. I wonder though: would going commando (scent-wise) be enough, or should I put on some Fabreze? ;)

different parts of the body…the blend of oils was on my wrist and it smelled like a floral citrus with some woods in the base…the Vanilla Fiend was on the other wrist and it smells amazing…like a deep dry vanilla…I was shocked that it came out as good as it did (talk about serendipity) and I really wanted to steal that bottle from her but she said NO. The blend of Phlur that was on top of one hand was also great…i am at home now and can still smell it on my bathrobe from last night’s experiment…a green citrus vetiver blend…and Midnight Fleur was on the top of my other hand…I applied all sparingly so I literally had to shove my nose onto body part to smell….and on my scent eating skin by the time I got to work several hours later most was gone.

But they are making it again! Not all that easy to find, and it isn’t in the pretty bottle, but they are making it. Don’t know for how long, but as of this moment they’re still shown on the Givenchy website.

I’m working today, so can’t go too too crazy with the community project, but I did end up wearing 4 different scents, all with resinous or amber notes. I started with a base of House of Matriarch Devotion + Bastide Ambre Maquis + incense body powder, and topped it off with a little Eau des Merveilles.

Not piling up scents since I am at work, but still wreaking havoc by wearing FM Superstitious- while wearing a hoodie and jeans since it’s Casual Friday, ha!

To me Superstitious is grand and sumptuous yet modern, and I can’t get enough of it. I regret purchasing a 10ml spray- I should have gone for a bigger bottle. Usually the regret is in the other direction :)

    Sotd is Ineke Idyllwild.

Wearing every sample I got from a split! Including:

    Cuir Ottoman
    Teo Cabanel Meloe
    La Fin du Monde
    Violette Fumee
    Parfum Berdoues Oud al Sahraa
And one that says Antidote with the house name worn off.

I’m having fun (and think the CO is winning).

In #confessyourunpopularopinion, I have to say that I hate perfume samples. I am a grown woman, not a child. I don’t need freebies in plastic vials like some cheap concert giveaway. And I’m certainly not going to pay 10 dollars just to try some fragrance. I either buy the bottle or pass. I have also never bought a perfume bottle from a sample. So, I must sadly miss out on these challenges, but instead, adore my full-size collection on my vanity.

There is nothing at all wrong with confessing unpopular opinions, but perhaps you could have found a way to say that you disliked samples without implying that the rest of us were children? Just a thought.

Anyway, to each his own! The majority of my bottles were purchased after trying a sample.

Yes, apologies for any offense. I was just expressing my frustration with this entire blog and should have chosen my words more carefully. It just seems to have more and more name dropping as free advertisements rather than essays, articles, and meditations on perfumes. It is a fun blog, no doubt, just not for me. Forgive my interloping.

Me too! I need to try something fully before I buy. I’m not a risk taker, I just can’t blind buy, no matter how much I think I’d like something. The decant sites are a godsend for someone like me in a city and country with limited access. I wouldn’t have a fraction of my FBs without samples.

I am unable to wreck any havoc today b/c I had to take my daughter to the Dr for ear infection. But I’ll try my best tomorrow at home when I am doing chores. I need to open up my old “scent library” of classic discontinued scents and see which ones are still good anyway. I am hoping to put on a major dose of Diorella with god only knows what. But today SOTD is a very light application of Caron Parfum Sacre edp. Cheers!

Working from home today so can’t go too crazy with The Nose around. I started in 31 Rue Cambon and then also dabbed on some Orchidée Vanille. Not a bad mix, not too wild either. Vanille softens the oakmoss.

Trying to play along, I left the house wearing 4 full spritzes of Joop! Homme. The way people wheezed, coughed and promptly moved out of my way at the supermarket, I guess it created the desired effect. This stuff is nuclear.

that’s funny! I wore Joop for Women and my boyfriend at the time had the matching Joop for men…I don’t remember either of them being nuclear…but then again it was the late 80s so the powerhouses were more tolerated and what we were used to.

    Long comment, sorry.
This is an interesting but difficult project for me. Testing several fragrances at once is not something I normally do (I could layer several fragrances I know, but in my opinion it’s not the same thing). So I modified the project a little to make it easier for me. Today I am using the scents I tried once but wanted to re-test later (so I know them at least a little). I am not testing the scents I hated first time I tried them. I am not putting them all at once – I’m going to add one every 15-20 minutes or so (or when I have time). So here we go.
    1 – Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant, 15:16
Tried it in May, and my impressions are the same. The start is lovely – fresh and juicy (great lime and mint!). In a couple of minutes it turns watery and pale on my skin. Oakland Fresca aptly compared such fragrances with bubble gum.
    2 – Shiseido Energizing Fragrance, 15:42
Cedrat Enivrant put me in the mood for more fresh scents. I tried Energizing in August and was not sure how I felt about it. And I am still unsure. Pros: it’s a fresh and spicy lily of the valley and it really is energizing. Cons: it lacks something that would keep me interested. It’s a bit too ‘functional’ and clean.
    3 – Miller Harris Figue Amere, 16:00.
Tried in September. It’s a pretty good figue scent. Fruity and delicious at the beginning then turns greener and woodier and somehow becomes less interesting. I do not think I need it, but it’s still nice.
    4 – Annick Goutal, Nuit Etoile, 16:32.
Tried it first in April and described it then as “watery citrusy/woody fragrance”. Today I notice more coniferous woods than citrus notes. There is something fresh and something sweet here too. The problem is this fragrance is too weak (at least on my skin).
    ***
Have a lot stuff to do, so I am adding two more and stop at that.
5 and 6, at 17:57 – La Perla Parfum Prive and Laboratorio Olfattivo Kashnoir. The first one is very old-school – makeup floral notes and honey. The second one is a delicious sweet woody fragrance.
That’s it – six. I could add more, but I just do not have time. It was fun!

EDP. It’s probably just not my kind of scent. Or I am anosmic to something in it. Three and a half hours later I cannot smell it at all, even when I sniff the exact spot on my arm where I sprayed it. (Maybe because Kashnoir took over, or maybe because not many fragrances last on my skin longer than 3-4 hours.)

I woke up feeling vaguely like I’m coming down with something ???? Hoping it’s just a revved up immune system from the flu shot I got on Tuesday.
I had an odd craving for SL Feminite du Bois, which I like but am rarely in the mood to wear, so wore a spritz of that. And I tried to be a sport and play along so I ran a bit of Aftelier Ancient Resins oil through my hair. Not quite havoc, or even reeking, but I like how I smell!

I hope you feel better. I had my flu shot on Monday and for the first time in many years I got very dizzy few minutes later and for 2 days I was very weak and tired with a sore throat and mild coughing. I am feeling much better but not 100%. I never had that reaction before.

SL Feminite du Bois is one of my fall favorites. You smell great!

I’m doing sort of a duel to the death thing today, with Sung on my left arm and Aromatics Elixir on my right. It’s actually not a bad combo, but Sung is dominating AE hands down.

Something similar happened to me yesterday. I wore three scents – White Patchouli, Cuir de Lancome and Private Collection (EL) – and White Patchouli fought Cuir de Lancome for domination (I think WP won, but Lancome resisted bravely). In the meantime Private Collection sat close to my skin and disapproved the other two very much. I am pretty sure I heard PC whisper things like “so undignified” and “unladylike”.

Actually after I posted this, I started smelling the AE a bit more, so it’s been a more even fight since then. She’s holding her own, though to be fair I think the version of AE I’m wearing is a more recent formulation, and it’s not as crazy powerful as the older version was. In this case, that actually makes it easier to wear.

Gosh I must have been so immuned to those fragrances in the 80s because I had Sung and don’t remember it being so strong…wonder what my reaction would be if I smelled it now :)

and the original AE was really potent…I had the small bottle in the late 70s and remember only being able to wear one drop on each wrist (the only other perfume I have ever encountered where I had to limit myself was Salome)

Wasn’t feeling the wreaking havoc thing today, so I’m continuing my Amouage week. Today it’s Memoir Woman. I a currently filling up my STC basket because of 15% off Amouage and a few other lines.

If you layer the drydown of MKK and apply vintage Bal, you get something fabulous. Layer vintage Miss Dior with Epic Woman, you get something akin to Ubar. I found those out by accident.

Taking baby steps toward reekage, by layering two scents and spraying them more than once. I’m conservative when it comes to sillage; I usually apply a maximum of two sprays (one on the decolletage and another on the wrist). Today, I’m experimenting with Messe de Minuit and Jaisalmer – I’m thinking that the Jaisalmer might provide a little dryness to balance the Minuit’s dank nature.

Good morningish, NST! After all the PSL talk over the past couple days, we went down to the Starbucks downstairs (literally downstairs from some of the units in our apartment complex–yup, it’s dangerous, but luckily, my mind usually still thinks I’m a poor grad student who can’t afford daily Starbucks) and got ourselves some PSLs! A bit too sweet, of course, and really not that great, but man, it’s good to be back in the US for autumn :)

Not reeking much havoc, sadly, because the boyfriend is on edge with even delicate levels of perfume, and reeking havoc just seemed cruel on a day when we were having a PSL morning date to make up for hardly seeing each other all week. However, I smell exquisite in Olfactive Studio Lumiere Blanche, which seamlessly integrates into and enlivens the cloudy morning. It RAINED last night down where I am, so I’m hoping there was some precipitation up near Napa?? Maaaaybe??

I had to work, so no reeking havoc for me. I am not the kind of person who wants to scare co-workers away ;)

After a few warm and sunny days, autumn has finally arrived with a bit of a vengeance. Temperatures have dropped and its been raining all night and almost all day. I am soaked from a 15 minutes walk. Bleh.

I started out in Incense Royale (sultan pasha attars) this morning and after work I stopped by our local department store for a few sprays of Iris Celadon (encouraged by Triestobeclassy and Clarissa in yesterday’s comments).

Its lovely! In first 10 minutes its a bit sharp, but soon everything melts down to a smooth velvety chocolaty iris – with patchouli.

I am laughing at some of these combinations! Very creative! My effort today sounds rather minimal by comparison, but I decided to load up on the Serges and so I’ve layered all of these: Ambre Sultan, Rousse, Louve, Bois de Vanille, and Datura Noir. Some sprays up and down both arms and on my neck. Perhaps not surprisingly, they have blended fairly well, and I now smell fine, mostly spicy and sweet. Sugar and spice and everything nice, ha ha ha. I have some Arabie, too, maybe I should add that to the mix.

I have a huge box of BPAL samples a friend gave me so I went with a Halloween reeking theme and am testing Black Phoenix, Dragon’s Heart, Hellfire and The Deep Ones.

Black Phoenix started out boring but is now doing a mushroomy-earthy thing I like; Hellfire is the same but more vanilla. Dragon’s heart is kind of a wimpier Boucheron? And The Deep Ones mostly smells like somewhere on the Ivory-Dove soap continuum but with a more vegetal drydown.

Overall I think I actually smell pretty good but I am definitely confusing people in meetings by smelling various parts of my arms…

Forgot about the challenge at perfume time. Pre-shower I tested drops of ELDO’s Eau de Protection on one hand, and Fin du Monde on the other.

Eau de Protection smelled grape-fruity and spicy to me, so after shower I layered Hermes Jour d’hermes parfum and SJP Stash. I think they work well together!

Fin du Monde smelled so pretty to me, I looked up the notes and can’t believe there are no delicate flowers in there – laughing at the popcorn and gunpowder notes, might have to get both these ELDO’s love them so far.

I thought I would try for an element of sophisicated havoc elegance …like wearing all the Hermes Jardin scents but my natural inclination towards random excess has got the better of me and I’ve ended up in a kind of orange vanilla fug
    Vanillary as the base
    Sun
    Furze
    Fleurs d’oranger
    Orchidee Vanille
    Whisky and Cardamon
Coco ( that was perhaps unneccessary and greedy )
It’s made the dogs sneeze so I must have done something right.

The hills around the house are yellow as the gorse is in full bloom so everywhere smells of furze…very vanilla coconutty. On my walk yesterday I saw a pair of native tomtits. The male is coloured like a panda bear and the size of a robin…what a thrill to see one near the city. I spent my walk daydreaming, trying to define what ‘beauty’ is and came up with ‘ something that provokes a sense of wonder’ which covers everything from perfume to tomtits

I saw an amazing bird show just yesterday, here in the middle of the city…a falcon (of what type I don’t know) swooped in out of nowhere chasing a tiny little bird and caught it mid-air. A bunch of us stared on as it plucked the poor little fella on a branch. I wish I was more educated about such things but it was the most amazing thing I’ve seen in ages!

Morning, all. I’m not reeking, or even smelling, of anything yet, but I’m in AWE of all of you. Talk about ‘sock it to the world’! All power to perfumistas everywhere, say I.

This is the start of a long weekend–Labour Day is Monday. Teaching has finished for the year and the rhythms of my days will be different. Less hectic, maybe. I’m looking forward to a chance to gather my scattered wits, and today’s scent will help me do that. While I’ve been dashing off these words, Bel Respiro entered my mind and settled there, all soft and contemplative. Bel Respiro speaks to me of late dawn in a tumbling, exuberant garden, captured in a bottle. Yes, that’s what I want. Sorry, Robin and NST-ites, that I’m not joining in today, but I have a different need.

Be well, all my fantastically fragrant compatriots down here in the rabbit hole.

I’m wearing Memo Irish Leather at work, but I will add spritzes of Italian, Russian and African leather when I get home so I will reek of a well travelled leather passport case or maybe a world traveler’s leather valise.

As Waterdragon just said, it’s a long weekend here – yay! I’m perfumeless as yet, befire breakfast and shower, but am planning to do some perfume sniffing this afternoon, which will likely involve spraying three or four different things. I’m still exploring the Trudon line, I like Olim the best, they are all quite nice, but none of them seem FB worthy for me.

I started off hating Olim and then it grew on me!

I don’t need any of the full bottles either but would like to have the coffret. Probably not going to spend the money though.

Well I actively tried NOT to reek havoc today since it’s a work day, but I still managed to warrant a comment from my co-worker. I’m wearing Tokyomilk Honey and the Moon because I thought something soft, fairly close to the body, and honey scented should be fine. But as soon as she came in, she asked if I was eating something different and that she smelled cigars. Sigh…I didn’t recall that there is a tobacco aspect to this perfume, and it projects more than I thought.

Another one to add to the “do not wear to work” list.

How much do I enjoy the Friday challenges and love the NST community? So much I’ll gladly take one for the team and reek havoc despite having a tenacious sinus headache.

Now, I could’ve gone for quantity and used my Dame samples, but I thought, “Eff it, if this could end up hurting, I’m gonna go down in a blaze of glory!” So I broke out the big guns and went with my Amouage samples: I’ve got Beloved on one arm, Gold on the other, and Honour on my ankles. Boom.

Enjoy your personal perfume clouds, everyone, and have a fantastic weekend!

You’re making me feel like we should all have to make monstrous compound names… Beloved Gold Honour sounds ok, and or like something a celebrity would name their child. Mine, I guess, would be Deep Hell Phoenix Heart. Heck there’s probably a kid named that somewhere too.

I’m reeking in iris today, although I perfumelover67 has me beat! I have Heure Exquise on the left arm, No 19 on the right, and Orris and Sandalwood on my neck. I WILL say that while I love all three of these, at the end of the day, No. 19 is out-performing the other two. Heure Exquise is hanging in a little, but the Orris and Sandalwood is almost gone!

I only brought my little box of Olympic Orchids samples with me on vacation and I just cannot reek havoc with them. There is something in each of them that makes my stomach slightly queasy, and the thought of wearing more than one is…unsettling. Today’s sample is Carolina, a sweet thing with the quease-inducing note. I’m halfway through the sample set, and I will finish trying them, but unless a miracle occurs I have found my evil scent perfume house–the one where NOTHING works for you.

Count me in the No to OO club! I agree, there is something so dense in the sweetness that it can’t be enjoyed. I do like sweet stuff, but I think I like it to be fluffier and cloud-like instead of dense like honey.

Well, on the one hadn I only wore 1 scent today. But in my defence:
    – the scent was Robert Piguet “Bandit”
    – I wore it (and re-applied it) on the flight to Malaga;
    – I gave TOMK a headache.

So success all round, I think. >:^)

    Top: aldehydes, orange, gardenia, galbanum, neroli, ylang-ylang and bergamot;
    Mid: carnation, violet root, jasmine, rose and tuberose;
Base: leather, amber, patchouli, musk, coconut, civet, oakmoss, vetiver and myrrh.

I didn’t reek of anything during the day today, just to be safe and not suffocate anyone, but now that I am home I grabbed a couple of samples and dabbed on Byredo Velvet Haze, for one. I like it a lot, but am having trouble isolating the different notes. I want to say that it all comes together well and I am enjoying it very much.

Then, in another spot, I put on some My Own Private Teahupo’o (A Lab on Fire). Love it! I get vanilla, amber and frangipani and some ocean whiffs (but definitely not enough to scare away people who don’t like aquatic things).

The last perfume I sampled in another spot is Institut Tres Bien Tres Russe and I smell bergamot, lemon and lavender in this one and maybe the rosemary. This smells good to me, too. It’s turning a bit herbal, but that’s fine.

I must be in a happy mood because I liked everything I sampled today. It’s probably a good thing, too, because I dabbed generously and all three seem to have a good amount of sillage and lasting power. Have to go out and do an errand yet late this afternoon. Wonder if I’ll get good or bad stares!

Thanks for the tidbit on My Own Private Teahupo’o…I’m really interested in that one. When you say ocean whiffs, would you say it leans more salty, or more seaweed-y? Or something else?

No reeking for me. Just Stella because of early morning meeting. Then multiple hours dealing with health insurance stuff, making hair and further dental appointments. More Stella because the husband has dragged me to some Italian movie where the director will be appearing. Don’t want to blast out the intelligentsia and distract them from some movie about a guy riding his moped around Rome. My husband assures me I’ll love it. I did love the Mexican food and margaritas beforehand.

SsssotD = Eau des Merveilles over Jour d’Hermes, Un Jardin sur le Nil, and Le Jardin de Monsieur Li.

It’s a nice surprise to find these work together. The citrus notes blend nicely.

My heart has a tender spot for Hermes, making an easy choice for today. When I fell into perfume-love again a few years ago, it was the first house I found with many scents that feel just right for me.

Loved reading everyone’s comments today. Hope we can reek havoc again in the future. It could be the global NST Holly-day.

Since I couldn’t reek havoc in the office, I decided to go with freekishly (!) old. If the provenance were to be believed, I have 80 year old L’Heure Bleue. The juice is dark and smells divine.
