Arquiste Venice Rococo & Frederic Malle Heaven Can Wait ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Jessica on 26 September 2024 18 Comments

I’m writing this review on the first day of autumn, and I have to admit that I started stocking up on my fall basics a few weeks ago. Although I don’t need more fragrance in the same way I might need more black tights or a new coat, I do think about updating my scent selections for cooler weather, and maybe adding something new to the mix. Even in the constant onslaught of new releases, there are a few brands that still get my attention; two of them are Frédéric Malle’s Editions de Parfums and Arquiste.

Last year, Frédéric Malle launched Heaven Can Wait, developed by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since I first tried this perfume; I initially sniffed it from a lab bottle in a Editions des Parfums boutique, then sprayed it on myself at a launch event, then purchased a travel-size bottle…and somehow never got around to reviewing it, but it’s back in my rotation this fall…

Francesca Bianchi Angel’s Dust ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 28 May 2020 20 Comments

A recent Friday Community Project made me think about one of my favorite fragrance sub-genres, which I’ll call “vintage vanity” — perfumes that evoke the scent of lipsticks and the spilled residue of dusting powder, and sometimes even the wood of an old dressing table. I have a few favorites in this category: Frédéric Malle Lipstick Rose and L’Artisan Parfumeur Drôle de Rose are probably my top choices, but I’ve also tried and enjoyed Gabriella Chieffo Camaheu, Chanel Misia, Maison Martin Margiela Replica Lipstick On — you get the idea.

For this fragrance, indie perfumer Francesca Bianchi wears her influences proudly on her scented sleeve: she mentions Lipstick Rose’s “‘make-up memories” as well as État Libre d’Orange Putain des Palaces’ “feminine seduction and decadent dirty sensuality” as two favorites that inspired the creation of Angel’s Dust…

Cire Trudon Olim & Mortel ~ fragrance reviews

Posted by Kevin on 18 October 2017 15 Comments

St. Louis by the workshop of El Greco

I’m a Francophile when it comes to candles. Cire Trudon is part of my Candle Triumvirate; Astier de Villatte and Diptyque make up the others. (I’ve always been afraid to try Frédéric Malle candles…I have a feeling they’d expand my candle obsession and budget to an even crazier level.)

I was interested (that’s about the best I can muster these days in Perfumeland, no longer am I “thrilled” or “excited” about new launches) when I heard Cire Trudon had developed a personal fragrance line called Trudon (how many times did I wish one of Cire Trudon’s wonderfully scented room sprays or candles was a perfume?) I’m happy to report three of the first five perfumes pleased me, and today I’m reviewing two: Olim1 and Mortel2. Robin Here at NST beat me to my other favorite: Deux (II)…

Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 4 September 2017 14 Comments

Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina

When I chose Sylvaine Delacourte Florentina to review, I didn’t know Kevin had already served it papers in his review of the line’s Helicriss, where he called Florentina “the most insufferable of the bunch” of the house’s releases. I understand that. If you don’t like powder and musk, you might well loathe Florentina.

Me? I’m a fan. I love a silky soft, swan’s-down puff of a perfume, and Florentina is all about that. To me, its musk is more about texture and body than about cleaning products…

Mona di Orio Suede de Suede and Dojima ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 24 July 2017 25 Comments

Mona di Orio Dõjima and Suède de Suède

In my mind, Mona di Orio has always been associated with quirky — and sometimes outright challenging — fragrances. Mona di Orio Nuit Noire is as dark and animalic a fragrance as I’ve ever smelled. Even the perfume house’s single note fragrances such as Vanille and Cuir focus on those materials’ less obvious aspects.

With Dõjima and Suède de Suède, the house made a conscious decision to satisfy “the demand for more accessible fragrances for those who recently discovered niche” by developing “more accessible fragrances to build a bridge to the more complex creations in our collection.” Lucky for us, both fragrances are still likely to be plenty interesting to experienced perfume lovers…
