Friday scent of the day 1/5

Posted by Robin on 5 January 2018 341 Comments

Happy Color My World Friday! (It's also the twelfth day of Christmas and National Bird Day.) Our community project for today: wear a perfume with a color in its name. If you don't have one, tell us what color you think matches your perfume. Thanks to Pyramus for the suggestion.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm coloring my world with Pantone's shade for 2018, Ultra Violet, via Vilhelm Purple Fig. (And sorry for being so late — this morning did not go as planned!)

Reminder: on 1/12, we're doing Rinse, repeat...pick a favorite community project from the past, and do it again. (If you need a reminder, here are the lists for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Orange Sanguine, for that burst of citrus in the opening. I need that bright energy today.

Horrors! Even more horrid is I keep a jar of instant in the back of the cupboard, lest I run out and forget to get more. Emergency measures (break glass in case…)

Well, I’m really on theme in TF Violet Blonde. It’s the only ‘fume I own with an actual color in the name (not counting “rose” or “amber” even though those are technically names of colors). Before I remembered I had the TF, I nearly went with Wood Sage and Sea Salt and was cooking up a lame explanation that “Sea Salt” is the name of a paint color I want on my bathroom walls. Thank you, Tom Ford, for saving me from that. 😀

Yes! It’s a really pretty soft grey-green – does the room you have it in get a lot of light? The bathroom I want it in is “landlocked” but has an east-facing skylight – in summer it is just flooded with light most of the day, but right now it stays pretty dark in there. It is a darker shade of blue-green now and it needs lightening up … but not too much.

Because the window in that room is on an angled wall, half the room is dark no matter what (poor design, but we’re stuck with it). The other half has good light for most of the day. As you can imagine, it made finding a shade of paint we liked difficult.

    Very purple!

I am wearing Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu. It’s the airiest lavender scent I’ve ever tried, and tea notes are very nice here. I have finally found a scent from Bvlgari tea collection I really enjoy. I think I’ll need a decant. Many thanks, Robin, for enabling.

PSA: Lush UK has already (pre-)released their Valentine’s Day range on UK website: https://uk.lush.com/products/valentines-day
I do not think I want anything (yet?), but talking about color the range looks cute and rosy.

SL Fourreau Noir (I bought the bell jar at the Palais Royal shop in 2009), just a single drop so as not to offend anyone. It’s SO GORGEOUS, a kind of lavender fougere but darkened almost to unrecognizability, with a black-licorice quality that I can’t get enough of.

As for those people who say that black isn’t a colour: well, no, in the most technical, pedantic sense black and white aren’t colours, but here in the real world where normal people live, they are.

My day started off rocky with a nightmare commute. One of the 3 trains I have to take to get to work had wall-to-wall people on the platform and a long line just to go up the stairs to get to the platform. Ugh. Fortunately, I didn’t see a single fight- how unusual!
I’m wearing the last drops from my MDCI Peche Cardinale. Very cheerful and helped keep my road rage in check.

I was fortunate with the trains, but I had to wait almost half an hour for the bus to arrive. Many of us were freezing at the stop and it broke my heart to see a little baby (around 2 months old) without gloves. She cried so badly and her mother just kept covering her head with a blanket. It never occurred to her that her little fingers were most likely frozen and in terrible pain. She usually has a very rude attitude, so nobody approaches her anymore to offer help when she seems to need it. She commutes everyday with 3 kids and none of them ever wear gloves.
Anyway, I hope my commute back home is not so traumatic….

Oof. At least I was underground. I hate seeing that and have been tempted to say something myself sometimes. My big pet peeve are parents who have a child on their bicycle and apparently are too cool for helmets for either of them. I think they should give out tickets for that.
Good luck with your commute home. I’ll take the East River ferry home which is the most pleasant way to go when I can do it.

Double points for me–in MH Tangerine Vert. Not a winter scent, but it seems to contain real oakmoss, so I’m happy.

ShopRunner just sent me an email regarding that Pantone color, featuring a pair of Jimmy Choos (Madeline suede platform pumps), which have me envisioning a trip to the ER).

Popped into Nordstrom yesterday–they seem to be hoping to sell more expensive scents, including a few of the Kilians. If you buy the large Moonlight in Heaven, it comes with a lovely black clutch with a MOP clasp. I wonder if you can remove the mold that holds the perfume bottle? In any case, it’s not the right accessory for my usual attire of yoga pants, cords or jeans.

Wearing Guerlain l’Heure Bleu vintage extrait. I love how the extrait is much more plush compared to the EDT.

I purchased tiny decants of HB, Jicky, Liu and Mitsouko and am excited to try the other ones as well.

    Still drinking lots of coffee.

L’Heure Bleue EDP, definitely not vintage, here. I am still a little bit sick (ten days now), and this is my first day of real perfume. Choices were this, green, or gray. There are so few days when I feel I can get away with L’HB that I just could not resist. Great topic for the community project!

Just had a shower with my new Lord of Misrule lush shower gel, and some gorgeous rose body butter I got for Christmas, so smelling good enough without perfume. However my SOTD when I get back from school run/ballet will be the gorgeous 1889 Moulin Rouge, enabler pin (among many!) to the lovely and generous haemalemis for this beauty. (I’ve spelt that terribly, but u all know who I mean).

In keeping with my desire to go through samples, I pawed through containers this morning to see which, if any, had a color in the name.

Jasmin Rouge! A generous sample from when TF SAs would fill a little bottle via pipette (especially if they were bored and enjoyed conversation). A friend was contemplating buying it (she later did…after saving up).

Already had coffee and have switched to Tea Pigs licorice & peppermint tea. I’m not a fan of peppermint, but I do love licorice in tea and the combo is nice on a cold morning.

Another mid-50s day expected here in Denver, so I’m celebrating our good fortune by wearing DSH’s Hansa Yellow from her Chroma Collection. The color ‘hansa yellow’ falls somewhere between yellow and orange, and this scent captures that shade perfectly. The floral notes are ylang (which is Hansa yellow-like in color), jasmine, and neroli, with a heart of citrus and banana (a note I normally hate, but Dawn totally makes it work here), and a lovely base of sandalwood and vanilla. It’s a sunny and yet rich fragrance. The ylang is the most prominent note to me, but the citrus and the banana/vanilla provide a perfect balance to the floral notes, giving it just a hint of gourmand, but no worries, you will not smell like banana bread, lol. It’s a very happy and contented fragrance, perfect for a relaxed and sunny Friday. TGIF!

Strangely, it took me quite a while to think of something suitable.

Luckily, however, after some reflection I remembered a sample of a scent, that’s not only named after a coloured something, that’s not even just named after the colour itself, but that’s even named after being NAMED after a colour – i.e. Majda Bekkali’s “Mon nom est Rouge” !

I just had to wear 31 Rue Cambon today, it was calling my name! Unfortunately no color words in this one.

Not sure about the rest of you but I’m thrilled it’s Friday! Seems like the week was 3Xs longer than usual with just getting back from break and having Monday off.

As for Pantone’s color of the year I am not a fan. Purple/violet is right up there with the other color I cannot stand, mauve. A very pale lilac or lavender is pretty and my bedroom is actually this color, but full on purple I’ll pass on. I think sage is a big color this year as well and that’s also in the purple/mauve bucket. Not a good year for color for me!

I thought I was pretty much alone in disliking purple. (I don’t know, there are probably people who dislike all the colors I love. Takes all kinds.) I mean, most shades of purple make me feel depressed and lethargic, and I can’t imagine deliberately choosing that Pantone shade for walls. Or clothing, for that matter.

I get on fine with blue-purple periwinkle, or pinky-purple orchid, or purply-maroon berry shades, but most of the rest of them = BIG NO for me.

Hi everyone, this is a fun project and people have found so many ways to participate! I’m wearing Andy Warhol Silver Factory from a fairly old decant that I just about forgot I had. This is a marvelous scent, maybe Bond’s best (though I do love Chinatown). I’m getting incense, cedar, and various floral notes. I also considered Keiko Mecheri’s Iris Pourpre but wasn’t in the mood as it’s rather sweet.

    SOTD is Widian “Black IV”.

    Top: bergamot, blackcurrant and prune;
    Mid: rose and white flowers;
Base: vanilla, musk, leather and sandalwood.

Well this is odd. As I wore this during the day I would have sworn it was a woody scent with some leather lurking in the background. Then I reapplied as I left the office and read the Fragrantica notes above. That’s not how it smells to me! But now I can’t get the woody notes either. ????

How does it compare to No 5 l’Eau? I loathe No 5, but absolutely adore No 5 l’Eau (all the sparkle! none of the awful heft!), and your description makes Fragments d’Or sound like a version of No 5 that I would like.

    SotD = Terracotta Le Parfum

Terracotta is a color, yes? Orange, subdued by brown. t
This is a wonderful winter scent, it moves in slow motion in the cold air.

I like Pantone Ultra Violet. Last night I was feeling quite purple in R&G Lavande Royale and lavender essential oil for a good night’s sleep.

Hurray for National Bird Day! Feathered family members can be LOUD, messy, destructive, and demanding. But they offer unlimited fun, affection, happy sounds, and amazing surprises when given an appropriate living space, a healthy and varied diet, plus lots of interaction with playmates both feathered and human.

Have a fabulous Friday, fragrant friends.

Yes! terracotta may be more of a color than say “green” because when you hear terracotta doesn’t the specific color of the tiles and earth come to mind? but when you hear “green” any number of shades and meanings could come to mind.

got to add Terracotta to my list

Wearing Chanel Allure Pour Homme Edition Blanche today (inspired by Robin’s daily lemming post yesterday). Although I believe blanche translates as white, this fragrance for me is yellow-green. No lemon pie here for me – it’s lemon, but it’s got lots of greenery with it. Gorgeous.

Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds parfum…..lurv it, last year I would have described it smelling like sweet flowers, now I would say white floral, progress 🙂

I’m wowed by the Pantone color of the year, sure to please purple lovers! Little similar to last year’s Benjamin Moore color shadows, but a true-“blue” purple.

I love the idea of picking a color of the year, so impossible, but a great way to celebrate shades and options!

Hello there wonderful fragrant NSTers! I haven’t posted in awhile but have been lurking about a bit. In December, I decided to reduce my perfume media intake in order to reduce the lemmings, and I must say it is effective! As I’m laid out on the couch with some kind of virus today, I decided to finally post on my experience comparing Cuir Beluga to Reminiscence Vanille (brought to you by the ever kind hajusuuri, for science of course!!)

Bottom line-if you really know and love Cuir Beluga, Vanille is not going to be a perfect substitute. CB is more refined, more plush, much longer lasting, and does have a touch of suede whereas Vanille has none and is all about the marzipan-tinged fluffiness. However, for someone who has had maybe just had a whiff of CB and loved it but doesn’t want to shell out the cash, Vanille may be great! I can say I am definitely not tempted to get a bottle of CB in addition to my bottle of Vanille, but if I ever run out of Vanille and have the budget, I may try to get CB.

Also, awhile back I asked if anyone has tried the Pat McGrath lipsticks. I did get 2 with my gift card and I wanted to report that they are so amazing! The matte one in Obsessed is seriously ridiculous, stays on so well without feeling drying and the color, oh the color!! I have actually received compliments from strangers on my lipstick when wearing it, which I have never had happen before. The other one is a more satin finish (luxetrance I think) in Major Red and is also very nice.

Wishing you all a joyous and healthy and fragrantly wonderful 2018!

Smelling classy, green, and clean in Tom Ford Vert de Fleur. It’s my first time having a full wearing of it other than sampling, and I’m really enjoying it. I do wish it was longer lasting though. It’s already quite faint 2 hours after I applied it.

I was too busy to post yesterday, but I wore Reglisse Noire thanks to a mini from springpansy. I love that one.

I seem to have a surprising lack of fragrances with a colour in their name, apart from Orange Verte and Thé vert by Bvlgari, so I’m wearing White Linen although strictly speaking white is not a colour, if you describe colour the way it’s described in physics. However, physics definitely not being my best subject at school, I’ll happily wear a fragrance with white in its name, besides White Linen is really a lovely aldehydic rose.

Ugh, once again, I’ve failed at the CP, as I am wearing the lovely 5 O’Clock au Gingembre. It’s, uh, kind of a lovely golden brown in my head. I am in no way influenced by the color of the juice.

You know, I have more Serge Lutenses than I have of any house that is not Hermes. I look forward to trying out some of the Paris-only offerings once I get there. (Which ones should I prioritize trying?)

Now that I have a real job, my perfume budget has become artificial. Those of you who also impose nonobligatory perfume budgets: How do you set your limits? I’m concerned I’m going to spend way too much money on perfume in Paris and then spend all year feeling horribly guilty.

You could pick a # of bottles to bring back, like 3? And those would be things you can’t easily get in US.

I guess you have to pack them in a checked suitcase right?

I may be going to Paris in April as well, I’ll keep you posted. I’m gong to get my passport updated, and my kids and hubs in case we all go on some Caribbean vacation – better to be prepared!

That’s a good idea. It’ll be hard to pick a number. I’ll do some research.

Suitcase space isn’t an issue, (un)fortunately. The boyfriend has status on Air France from all the times he visited me, so we will get roughly 1000 free bags. The boyfriend looked rather grim when I mentioned that we could buy more suitcases in France to tote all my newly purchased bottles of perfume. Sigh.

Great idea! What kinds of metrics do you use to decide how much money to put into the envelope? (Clearly, the question is how much I want my money vs. how much I want those perfumes, but I have a very hard time figuring out what the answer to that question is.)

I think about how much money I want to spend on perfume (an amount that won’t make me feel bad later), the number of bottles I want to add to my collection, and the average price of the bottles I would want to buy. This year that amount is $1,000. When I was working and had a smaller collection, the number was $3,000. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I would set aside some $s to spend at the duty-free shops for even perfumes easily available in the U.S. You must do your research first to be able to decide if it is worthwhile to lug it home based on the price difference.

Every time I type “Bvlgari” I feel like an impostor, as if I had some kind of affectation to make people think I have a glamorous lifestyle rubbing elbows with the glitterati in my daily comings and goings. Anyway, this perfume couldn’t be further from that impression!

Yesterday, I commented that I needed to ask for credit back on a $5 Uber cancellation fee (driver couldn’t find my house and he knew little to no English for me to give him directions). While it was very easy to get the credit, I also wanted to leave a comment about the driver without using the ratings. There were only 2 places to leave comments: a safety concern or an issue with a service animal. I ended up using the service animal issue comment section but clearly identified it as NOT a service animal issue. Does anyone know where I could have left a comment other than the one I used?

I feel the same way about “Bvlgari.” But even weirder typing “Bulgari”…

I don’t, unfortunately, although I’ve had good luck getting credits from Uber as well. I feel for the guy not being able to communicate, but we are in an English speaking country so… get some lessons on the basics already!

I’m wearing Roja Dove Lilac today. I love lilac in perfumes, and this is probably my second favorite. Desarmant comes first and En Passant, third.

I’m not following the project because I just didn’t feel like it. I needed a comfort scent today (story to follow), went with some Musc Ravageur oil and perfume.

Before we moved into our apartment, we already owned a front-loading washer and dryer. The apartment comes with a W/D but they are crap, and instead of storing our good W/D, we switched them out. The only issue is that they’re not set up correctly in the laundry closet because the OG W/D were not front loading. It’s always a pain doing laundry because of the crazy set up, and I was JUST telling my husband how I can’t wait until we get a house and have the correct set up.

So. Yesterday morning, while I was unloading some clothes from the dryer, the door came careening towards me with the power of one thousand suns and smacked directly onto my right eye (brow bone and eyelid). It broke the skin and I now have a black eye. Spent the good part of yesterday taking anti-inflammatory drugs and icing it. Thank goodness for concealer. Today’s makeup is brought to you by Cle de Peau and Kat Von D.

So far, 2018 is shaping up to be the BEST. YEAR. EVER. 😉 🙂 😀

Wow! How scary. Glad your eyes are OK and no need for stitches.
Over the break I burnt my face around my jaw when I was baking and that was a bit scary too. Thank goodness it was low on my face as it went through a very visible process of scaring and peeling, but not in a good way. They say most accidents happen at home and there’s a lot of truth to that.

      OWWWWW. Hope it mends quickly.

So far 2018 isn’t doing well in my house, either. At 2am on the 1st, the cat who sleeps on my pillow had a nightmare and slashed me across the eye, fortunately just below the brow. Nice cut. On the 2nd, same cat woke us up barfing in the middle of the night. On the 3rd, the two cats had a middle of the night tussle, with much screaming. On the 4th, earthquake. Hey, last night we finally had a 2018 night with no drama… yikes. I’m not one to see omens, but 2018 is not off to a good start.

Am participating in the always fun LPRN Black Perfecto. I wasn’t necessarily in the mood for it, but it has a way of charming me every time.

I’ve never smelled any of the other LPRNs. Are there any that Black Perfecto fans recommend? It’s this particular presentation of black cherry that I really like about it.

I haven’t been here in forever – for most of my pregnancy I haven’t been able to tolerate fragrances, but I’m starting to now! Starting easy – with some Vanille Insensee. I didn’t care for it THAT much when I tried it years ago, but right now it’s very lovely. Making me desire to expand my vanilla collection!

Frederic Malle Alber Elbaz superstitious, from a decant. Bright bubbly sparkly. Really am enamored with this one. Could be a FB. Out of my last three orders, FedEx has lost two pkgs and destroyed another, so I’m weary of ordering anything. Which is a shame because I’ve had nothing but good experiences with them. TGIF

I am sorry to hear that and understand your frustration. UPS lost 2 of my packages with Christmas presents in December and it was a nightmare, since I had to run to the stores to replace the items. You cannot trust any of those companies anymore, including USPS. The quality and efficient of the service is becoming worse and worse.

Well, here I am late as well. Fortunately, my participation in all of this was to wear Habit Rouge, which I can still smell (the far drydown is my favourite aspect of this wonderful fragrance), some fifteen hours after first spraying it on… It’s my daughter’s birthday (and a very long workday) for me today, so this was just the cushion of civility I needed. Thanks for the idea!
