Friday scent of the day 1/8

Posted by Robin on 8 January 2016 412 Comments

DSM + Bianca Chandôn capsule collection

It's Woodfest Friday! Our community project for today: wear something woody — but no oud, because we already did oud!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I considered Serge Lutens Chêne, but in the end I went with Comme des Garçons Sequoia, from the Red series. I smell like a tree. It appears to be out of stock everywhere, although others from the series are still available.

Reminder: next Friday, 1/15, wear a fragrance from Bvlgari, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the DSM + Bianca Chandôn capsule collection includes t-shirts ($66) and hoodies ($177).

Very woody this morning. Virginia cedar essential oil mixed with unscented body lotion topped off by the last squirt of Olympic Orchids Woodcut.

The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest. It doesn’t smell like a forest, but hopefully the name counts towards the theme!
I really liked the first Vagabond Prince, but was less excited with the two newer ones. I wonder if there will be any future additions to the line? Bertrand D seems like an awfully busy guy.

I was just on the Vagabond website. I’ve heard their perfumes mentioned here on NST but do not know anything about the brand. Bertrand Duchaufour turns out to be the creator of a suspicious number of fragrances I love. Do you know anything about the back story of the company? The website says they are based in San Diego. Their bottles are really fun.

I believe Vagabond is the offspring of Fragrantica, the forum.

    Dark Horse by Dame Perfumery.
There is virtually nothing that I don’t like from this company and many that I love. And Mr. Dame is one of the most generous indie perfumers I have ever encountered!

it is not very “dark” per se but quite sweet on me….I am finding that with Dame I gravitate towards his “masculine” scents (I LOVE Leather Man and that might be my next full bottle purchase…to date between myself, family and good friends I have purchased ten full bottles and loads of travel sprays)

Desert Rose is beautiful….I have it in a travel spray…Have you tried the Cassis, Rose and Sandalwood? It is a different take on rose. I am also curious about his soliflores…to date I have only sampled the gardenia and it is gorgeous…very fleshy and very potent…..I may not be a perfume expert but to my nose the man is a genius!

Hi, bardot! Somehow I just knew you’d be scent twins with me today! I love Dark Horse and echo all your thoughts about the Dame fragrances. I especially enjoyed the Cassis, Rose and Sandalwood scent this summer. And although I am not a fan at all of musk, his generous musk samples arrived the other day and the musk oil is actually quite lovely. Haven’t tried the soliliflores yet, but they do sound nice.

I’m in Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt, though I don’t get much wood in it outside of the name. My choice was partially inspired by Jessica’s intro to her review of Albino, and the idea of selecting something light after the excess of the holiday season. I’ve worn Coco just about every day this week, and this Jo Malone is pretty far from Coco, stylistically. Feels energizing on this _very_ TGIF Friday.

Scent twins! My sample has evaporated a little and it is more potent than I remember, which is a good thing. It is not heavy at all though. I think I’ll be reapplying later this morning.

I have the small bottle of this and I’m over halfway through. I do 7 sprays in the morning, which seems insane when I’m applying it (and I would _never_ apply Coco like that), but it really doesn’t last that long or project that far. That said, it’s still my favorite JM scent.

You know, I’ve look on fragrantica and never figured out what “wood sage” was (the note isn’t listed there). I just figured it was something scrubby that grows near the shore (of course, I also never took the apparently insurmountable step of actually googling it…) – so that you for the trivia!

Funny, I always read it as “Wood, Sage, and Sea Salt.” I never bothered to read up on it because I didn’t think I’d ever buy it. Today it skewed very masculine on me, in a good way. It was much more complex than I remember and had something in it that reminded me of the original Adidas for men. A guy I dated in high school wore that. I think I liked the cologne more than I liked him. I’d give just about anything for a bottle of that.

You smell fabulous! Who doesn’t want to smell like a forest? I sampled it and loved it, but it was quite fleeting on me.

Since I went to the woods a day early, today I decided to hang out in the cabin, all snug and cozy on a rainy dreary day with L’Artisan Tea For Two.

Olfactory poetry! I can totally see why so many like this one!

I LOVE (love, love) Serge Lutens Santal Blanc. I’ve been so irritated that SL made it bell jar only and non-export. I prefer SLs in the spray bottle. I’m out of Santal Blanc at the moment but it’s one on my list to replenish someday.

I’m not really great at describing scents but I think that the extrait is deeper and really gorgeous but the sillage is closer to the body. The EDT is a bit more perfumy and has more sillage but doesn’t last as long. They are both beautiful IMO. If anyone else has anything to add, please chime in.

I’m starting off in The Afternoon of a Faun. It’s supposed to be hot today and TAOAF doesn’t usually last long for me anyway, so I’m armed with a little decant of Eau de Gloire for an herbal blast this afternoon.
Today the goal is to get all the fruit picked, which I really prefer to do in cool weather when the Africanized bees are less active. They are a huge hazard in the grove with all the woodpecker pecked fruit. Nothing like grabbing an innocent looking orange, only to have it turn to sticky, buzzing horror in your hand. Cross your fingers for me.

Far South Texas. Lots of the wild bees here are Africanized. There is, in fact, a huge nest just across the canal that the fire dept. hasn’t gotten to yet. My uncle has lost several pets to them, but the city won’t remove them unless there’s an attack and all the removal services are booked solid for months and very expensive. I find it very intimidating, but it’s just something everyone lives with. As long as nobody gets stung or kills a bee it’s ok, otherwise we run for the truck.

The woodpeckers peck the oranges (until the season is over, then they move to grapefruit) to drink the nectar and the bees take advantage of the perfect bee-sized drink holes. It’s harder to wear gloves because the first sign that you have a holy fruit is usually that it’s wet.

Speaking of unusual occurences in pants, I once had a mouse race through the front door of my house and make a beeline right up the leg of my yoga pants. Like perthgirl, I ended up on the front lawn flailing around and screeching. In my underwear.

Been there – scorpion for me but also in yoga pants. Apparently stinging things don’t like being spandexed to one’s thigh. For the longest time I did an amusing stomping scorpion-killing dance on every pair prior to pulling them on. Now that I’ve been reminded, I’ll have to resume my ritual.

No stings yet! Thankfully, my uncle’s helper showed up and, being young and strong, has done the most orange picking and left the grapefruit to me (never mind the bees, two buckets of grapefruit are considerably lighter to carry). Apparently we bribed him well enough that he decided to skip his day job to help :)
I ended up wearing some Azemour this afternoon and I can safely say that it does have a lot in common with the grove. Not quite as much of a rotting fruit note as real life, but I don’t imagine that would sell.

I think it’s a really pretty scent but don’t think of it as an incense. I sprayed it on a blotter which I put in my bag and days later I was getting beautiful wafts from my bag so I ordered a sample which I spilled on my dresser. Lingered for a month!

I haven’t tried this range yet. I probably should very soon, while I still have local access to it, but the high prices make me a bit wary. The last thing I need right now is cravings for more expensive bottles!

Me, I love Encens Mythique! I immediately put some on, woody Friday or not. Try it a couple of times on your skin – it’s probably pricey even in just a decant so no need to rush.

Love Encens Mythique d’Orient. It’s not what I usually think of as incense, as others have said, I’m not sure how I’d describe it.

I like all three from the range, it was hard to choose one, but they are not cheap.

I’m wearing Guerlain Vetiver, the last bit of a mini that I bought when I first started exploring the world of scent. One of the first and best things I learned from this blog is not to consider gender when deciding if I liked a fragrance. This mini is the first that I’ve drained, so now I need to find a full bottle. Fragrantica say that Vetiver is a woody scent, and since I only had three of the scents they list in the woody group, I chose it. My other options were Demeter’s Snow, and Dzing! Somehow I would never have classed Dzing as woody, but Fragrantica does.

Yeah, I researched vetiver last night. Hard to think of a green plant as “woody”, but I guess woody stemmed plants fit the category. “Aromatics” seems rather loosely defined (at least in my mind), that’s the only other category I could think it might fit.

And I researched it because I wanted to wear Hermes Vetiver Tonka. And did.

Yes, patchouli (likewise a green plant) also generally classified as a woody note. But, a woody note is not necessarily wood :-)

I have the extrait, which is a dabber, and I know what you mean: it stays very close to me, and does feel a little small. Sometimes that’s entirely a good thing–meetings, teaching– but sometimes I’d like it to speak above a gentle whisper. I have been wondering about buying a spray bottle of the EdeP, but a few people have said that nothing matches the extrait in richness and intensity, though, so I haven’t yet done so.

Gidday, all. I’m awake at a silly hour because I pulled a muscle moving heavy stuff yesterday, and I can’t seem to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Note to self: I am not as strong as I ought to be or as I remember myself being! I got everything done, though, and I feel triumphant. My scent is Wenge, one of the Donna Karan essences. I have a feeling that I read somewhere that she brought out bottles of some of the individual notes in Black Cashmere, and that this is one of them. I might well be wrong about that, but Wenge certainly smells as thought it’s an important component of BC. It’s a sweet wood, gentle and probably too warm for the muggy day ahead, but I’m really enjoying it at the moment, together with a nice hot cup of tea and two painkillers. Breakfast of champions! Hope your days are going well everywhere.

They are still on the shelf here, so almost certainly available in the States, possibly at your blissful perfume discount stores, do you think? I don’t think they were at all popular–I like Wenge very much, and Labdanum too, but I am, just a little, wondering why wouldn’t simply wear BC.

I will, thank you. I ‘m thinking of pootling out when the day begins to see if I can find an available masseuse. A real one, that is– where I live, there are quite a few “massage parlours”, and you have no idea the confusion I caused when I first arrived and took a street-level sign at face value. I went upstairs expecting to book a massage…I thought it was hysterical, but no one else did, and I was escorted unceremoniously downstairs again. Talk about feeling unwelcome!

I once spent three nights in a Melbourne knocking shop! I went to a conference, and my accommodation had been booked for me from a list of local motels which the host uni clearly had assembled on the basis of location within an easy walk of the campus. Why would they checkmitbout? I have to say I was never bored: my neighbours changed every hour or so, and I spent a certain amount of time trying to work out the application principles of some very curious iron-mongery. In truth, I was probably more entertained by the accommodation than by the conference.

I’m in Feminite du Bois. I did consider wearing something more unusual, but I do love this one and was also in a horrible hurry in the morning. This inevitably means that I have to limit myself to full bottles – there is no way to find anything quickly amongst my samples.

I wanted to wear this, but I found that my sample had evaporated. I remember my mom wearing the original of this back in the 80s, along with Shiseido’s lovely Murasaki, which was unfortunately discontinued.

Since my decant of Feminite du Bois was stolen along with my purse (along with samples of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Tom Ford Oud Wood, Carnal Flower, Arquiste No. 57, Chanel Sycomore, Chanel Coromandel, and a decant of Shalimar extrait) I am in Dior Dune layered with a sandalwood attar.

Thanks for the sympathy. :( The theft was shocking and upsetting not only because it happened on New Year’s Eve, but also because it was done by an airline employee (I was the last passenger off the plane), and of course the airline will never take responsibility for “lost” items.

Lesson to be learned: if you forget something on an airplane, go back and have somebody retrieve **immediately** (even if you need call security or the police because nobody from the airline is available or cooperative).

However, nothing was stolen that had extreme sentimental value, and my driver’s license did not have my real address (the change of address sticker came off after swimming), so it is unlikely that they could steal my identity. In the meantime, I have already started the long and arduous process of replacing everything. :) It’ll be okay!

Jaisalmer for me today – the first bottle I’ve had to replace after falling down the rabbit hole. My foster dog is finally back to normal after being sedated yesterday, but we got the bad news that although there is no bone break, something is definitely wrong with his joint, and he needs to see an orthopedist. I hope that whatever is wrong can be resolved before the end of the month, when I go on vacation.

Oh! Meant to ask for some input!

I’m going to the fancy mall in my area tomorrow, to have lunch with a cousin, and to do some sniffing and sampling. The anchor stores are Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s. Across the street is another shopping center that has a Saks, a Nordstrom, and a Belk, which seems out of place. The main mall has a Sephora with a pretty hefty fragrance selection, and I know that this NM carries Annick Goutal and Creed at the very least, because I’ve smelled them there before. I’ve heard that Nordstrom is pretty generous with samples, and I know how it works at Sephora, but I don’t know my odds at the other stores.

My main question is, as someone still new, what should I look for first? My nose will only take so much, and I can only wear so much at one time. Below are some I’m already planning to look for.

AG – Ce Soir ou Jamais, Nuit Etoilee, Eau de Sud, and Mandragore

FM – Carnal Flower, Portrait of a Lady, L’Eau d’hiver, Iris Poudre

Guerlain – Mainly want to check Jicky concentrations, to pick one.

As far as Sephora goes, I’m going to do some serious browsing. I don’t know yet what I’m looking for there, but I can usually get 3 samples from them, so we’ll see.

Any suggestions for things I’ve missed that I might find? I’m not buying anything tomorrow, just smelling. And I’m not sure that I’ll make it over to Saks and Nordstrom, due to weather.

Neimans has such a nice selection-I would go in with an open mind and see what you come across. Sometimes Neimans and Bergdorfs carry exclusive fragrances that are just for their stores, so something may surprise you!

FM and AG are harder to find in stores, though I would go with FM since AG is much cheaper to get samples online. Since you have specific goal I would also recommend you go to Guerlain.

Nordstrom and Sephora are both much more common than NM, though both do offer free samples.

        Good luck and have fun!

Depends on the Saks but you should be able to sniff the Kilian line there, Bond No 9, and many of the Guerlains, and possibly the Chanel Exclusifs (the Boston Saks just got them). I also agree with going with an open mind and if you’re looking for high end stuff, start with NM or Saks

Good news about the Chanel Exclusifs at the Boston Saks! I went to the Chanel store several months ago to buy my Box of Eels, but I have to admit that it intimidated me even though I happened to be dressed up at the time for lunch with a friend and looked like I might possibly belong there. The SAs were very nice, however, and I have no complaints about my treatment.

Your list is enough to keep your nose busy! I’m not sure how selection varies in different locations, but as far as hard-to-find lines go, my Saks has Dior La Collection Privee and by Killian and my NM has MFK and FM. Nordstrom is definitely the best for service and samples, but their selection is more basic. None near me have AG, unfortunately. Have fun!

I believe FM is only carried at Barney’s in terms of dept stores in the US. Saks here(NY) has a large-ish niche collection including AG, Penhaligon’s, Kilian, Creed, Diptyque etc. Happy sniffing!

The buying experience was lovely. I highly recommend that anyone visiting Chicago stop by the Chanel boutique. The fragrance guy is elegant but totally welcoming and friendly. He happily gave me five samples, including two he had to make himself.

He also gave me a sample of No 22 and encouraged me to use it before opening my bottle, so if I decide that I must have the 6.8 oz size, I could exchange it. Ha. I wonder how often that sales tactic works. Of course, I don’t need 6.8 oz of any perfume, but I’ll use the extra sample for travel. :)

I’ve never been to Chicago, but every Chanel boutique I’ve ever visited has treated this mad old bat from Downunder with the utmost courtesy, patience and helpfulness. I remember saying to my husband how I’d be too intimidated to enter the flagship store in Paris, and he just looked at me oddly and said, “Love, it’s a BUSINESS. They’re there to take your money and give you what you want.” He was right, of course, and buying my 31 Rue Cambon there was a joy, even though I was dressed as your average Kiwi tourist.

The very tall Chanel associate at Saks in DC is amazing. When it’s not busy he has taken out the box of essential oils Chanel uses and we sniff the different elements that go unto the various fragrances. He has a fashion design degree, so loves Chanel. He really appreciates someone who cares about perfume.

I had considered Omnia for our oh-so-hot weather, then remembered Santal de Mysore. Figured that Sandalwood = India, India = hot summers, therefore Santal de Mysore great for hot weather. Such a good choice! Interestingly, I find that the celery/curry note that so many people dislike is far less obvious in the sultry heat.

Today’s theme was the kick in the pants I needed to test Jo Malone’s new Orris & Sandalwood. Not the woodiest wood ever, to say the least.

The orris note is there but it fades into the background rather quickly. Sandalwood? Yes, but not a deep, rich one. There’s a sharpness and a sweetness that I can’t yet attribute to any particular notes, but on the wrong day would probably give me a headache. On the whole it reminds me a lot of Wood Sage & Sea Salt. Like, really a lot. It’s OK for me, but I won’t be buying the FB.

    Happy Friday!

Chanel Sycamore- which is really, really lovely. Very woody but really green and fresh at the same time, if that makes any sense? I love this on myself, but would like to smell this on the man of my dreams. I have a sample of this and don’t spritz it that often, so this was a great way to rediscover this!

OOTD- Big old black cashmere sweater, jeans, short lugged boots, big gold earrings.

Cashmere sweaters, especially really old ones from the 90s and 80s are great in winter! I love thrifting, finding these old gems, repairing and then wearing them.

I have actually tried G Vetiver for him and her(many thanks to Saks 5th Ave in Seattle). In comparison to Sycamore:

        1) G Vetiver is more earthier, citrusy, grassier- almost medicinal. There is a sort of musk component that comes out, and there is some serious projection. You can smell a guy or (gal) wearing this across the room, in a good way. Sycamore in comparison is softer, gentler and spicier, with no citrus.

        2) G Vetiver pour Femme is very green, very fresh, a bit flowery and with a roundness that is almost sweet. It has a powdery bit that makes the whole scent huggable (if that makes any sense?) This does not project like the one for men, but would smell awesome on a guy. Sycamore is more woody, more crisp and not lemony/citrus at all.

Honestly all three of these scents are EXPENSIVE. I got very lucky indeed with samples. I think Sycamore would last forever (those bottles are HUGE) and seem like it would be great for a couple to own together, followed by G Vetiver pour Femme.

    SOTD = Slumberhouse Ore

Since it is a woodFEST, i wanted to wear something with a good mix of woods. Besides yummy cocoa powder and vanilla, it has Oakwood! Mahogany! and Gaiac! There is an undertone of coconuttiness although I suspect that’s an effect from the woods (saying this because it is different from the coconut in Pear + Olive which has a more full-on coconut note).

Today I am in D.S. & Durga Bowmakers. Everytime I smell this for a second I think it’s off, but the varnish note is intentional and part of what makes it interesting.

I’ve been wondering about intentional (?) varnish notes. Most recently in moonshine rather than perfume. Someone brought a potent home brew to a holiday gathering, but I was afraid to try it because it smelled to me like nail polish. I think everyone else from that party is still alive, so I probably would have been ok. Now I realize that I should have tried it on my skin!

Wonder if they meant for that to happen? It would seem to me that would be an undesirable thing in a whiskey. The moonshine I’ve encountered has either been throat-strippingly raw, or so smooth and aged that it tastes like butterscotch. I’ve never found a middle ground.

My great-grandfather used to make, and sell, shine. I’m told his was good, though it was all gone loooooong before I came along.

I forgot the theme and started wearing a house blend of herbs, a bit of spice, a dash of citrus, and some sturdy rosewood and flowers. It doesn’t count, but since it’s amateur, it’ll probably disappear and make way for Chene or Devin or Topanga Canyon or that old standby Indecision. I think the 2013 flanker was piney.

QOTD: What are some examples of chypre leathers, and what are some examples of non-chypre leathers?

From yesterday’s question, I learned that Bandit and its signature ingredient isobutyl quinoline are leathery and chypre-ish, and that, in contrast, birch tar can make a perfume smell leathery but not necessarily chypre-ish. So another version of my question might be: what are some examples of IBQ leathers, and what are some examples of birch tar leathers?

In which category would you place Knize Ten, Chanel’s Cuir de Russie, House of Matriarch Lucid, contemporary Cabochard, vintage Azuree, Jolie Madame, Derby, Boxeuses, or your favorite leather scent?

Leathermountain, I also caught the beginning of the chypre conversation yesterday, so apologies if Im repeating because I haven’t read all the comments. There’s an interesting article on chypres on Perfume Shrine explaining the definition and history and some variations. When I had absolutely no idea what a chypre even meant I found it helped heaps. (sorry not sure how to add link with an iphone :-/)

I think cuir de russie and cuir ottoman are examples of non chypre leather, they’re classified as oriental floral’s on fragrantica. birch tar being the leather note,
cuir de lancome i think is an example of a leather chypre ie more in the bandit camp, and possibly Rien, but not that sure.

I love rosewood! I just got lucky and found a very nice 7 ml size apothecary bottle of rosewood eo, and it is gorgeous. I’m lucky b/c it was the last one!

As for non-chypre leathers, I’m going to suggest the original Donna Karan aka “Signature” which is an oriental with leather and suede accords; Amouage Memoir Woman, ditto on oriental/leather; vintage Guerlain Vol de Nuit is an oriental with very very light leather accords. For non-orientals, I like the powdery leathers: Molinard Habanita; Cuir de Lancome edp; and the Bottega Venetas – original or “eau legere”. Chypre leathers have not to this point been good for me, but I think that Bandit is supposed to be the ultimate version.

    Hello and happy Friday!
Satellite Padparadscha tonight. I am a gorgeous lumbermill in the middle of a cedar forest☺. Or a cedar chest filled with dried juniper berries. Why, oh why it is no longer?!?!
Jotting wildly now, woods is the category I just can’ t seem to get enough of.

I bought a used bottle of Bois et Fruits on eBay, but sadly it reeked of stale cigarette smoke – not just the box and bottle but also the fragrance itself. I can’t imagine how smokey its previous home must have been. So sad. At least the buyer was willing to accept a refund. I still need to buy a (new!) bottle one of these days.

I just bought a sample set of all the Hermes Hermessence fragrances and went with Vetiver Tonka today based on the theme.

At first I got a bit of cigarette smoke but it has settled down now and I am enjoying it. Smells kind of refined/expensive.

I thank you all for referencing the Hermessence perfumes so much in your comments which piqued my interest and helped me justify the purchase. ;) I’m looking forward to trying them all.

Thought about wearing Chene again today, but was looking around and found LL Gaiac 10. I have a small decant I bought unsniffed. I keep trying it, but I just don’t like it. I need a tiny bit of sweetness and there is none here – airy and peppery. I have a sample of Sequoia somewhere – need to find it!

I have a lot of wood scents too! It was a hard choice, but in the end I went with Robert Piguet’s Bois Noir from a 1mL sampler. This is strong, and it normally lives quarantined in a little plastic baggie with the rest of my sandalwood scents. Can’t let those run amok in the collection. :)

Absinthe = Artemisia absinthium, commonly known as Wormwood. Very green up top, woody stems, perennial in NY near the Canadian border (zone 5/6). So it qualifies as “woody”, if in growth characteristics only. :)

I’m wearing Portrait of a lady today- sorry Robin! it’s oudy rather than woody, but i had a real craving for it yesterday, and haven’t worn it nearly enough this winter, especially not to justify the 100ml vat, that i received for christmas last year! Any how it has made me very happy today.
I will do woods tomorrow, with Epic woman, which i am enjoying more each time i wear it. At first it seemed to dry, and not rosy enough, so i spritzed a tiny bit of fille de berlin over the top, and its absolutely heavenly then.
Really enjoying reading all of these interesting choices!

I bought a travel spray of PoaL several months ago, but never wore it because it always feels like too much on me. I finally pulled it out and enjoyed it for a NYE party. Seems I need to be wearing a black velvet dress and red lips to feel up for the challenge of PoaL. It is a beautiful fragrance!

Now that you’ve found the right attitude, you can wear the perfume with your levis as if you had on the velvet dress (and I would do red lipstick and levis any day, unless it clashes too badly with the shirt I have on…)

    Hi Robin and everyone,

I missed the wood memo and I’m in Mona di Orio Myrrh Casati (running late for Epiphany/Three Kings Day).

I did nab a partial bottle of Sequoia recently on evilbay though and I’m glad I did. It’s especially good and bracing and a favorite after a hot shower at bedtime. It’s sad to me to see some of the old CdG series scents go, as the collections seem almost classic at this point.

I hope they’re not really gone…it does seem like some of the series disappear for a bit and then they make more and they’re back. But I guess that won’t keep happening forever.

Dries van Noten, close to the dregs of my sample. Delicious wood pudding, and makes me want to have some more of this one, even though I strongly suspect I’d enjoy it more on someone in close proximity. Even very close proximity.

I bought a bottle of that but had to return it-I wanted a little more projection maybe? I am not sure…it just stayed so close to the skin I had to really get close to smell it, and for that price I think there are other sandalwood fragrances that I own that are much easier on the wallet and give the umph that I am looking for

Jumped the gun and wore Sonoma Scent Studio Winter Woods yesterday; am in Champagne de Bois today. It came on with a burst of aldehydes and settled into mostly floral. About an hour in and the woods are really emerging. If it’s anything like Winter Woods, I’m in for an exquisite drydown.

Oh, I love smellng like a tree, I never met a wood I didn’t love!

Woody notes (often combined with spicy) feature prominently in my fragrance wardrobe, so I had many to choose from today. Since this morning was book discussion morning, and I take secret delight in wearing an article of clothing/jewelry and or a discreet spritz of scent that suits the book’s theme, I let that be my guide today.

As a reflection of Native American culture, I chose Dame Perfumery Scottsdale Dark Horse as my SOTD. Its deft interplay of cinnamon/clove and guaiac wood was wonderfully comforting on a dismal, rainy day. And my scent choice turned out to be a serendipitous one: It wasn’t until after I’d chosen Dark Horse, I realized I really didn’t know what ‘guaiac’ wood was, so I looked it up and learned that this wood has been used by Native Americans since the 16th century to treat severe ailments such as herpes and syphilis; its local name is the ‘Tree of Life.’ Fascinating and timely, as the prevalence of syphilis among Native Americans and early explorers/frontiersmen was noted in the book but there was no mention of its treatment. So my SOTD came full circle and added not only to my sensual pleasure of the day but enhanced intellectual enjoyment as well!

Most of the day, I wore SNM Melograno. I have no idea why they named it after pomegranates, because it isn’t the least bit fruity. To me, it smells sort of like both Ivory soap and wood/incense, very smooth with no distinct notes. It’s one of my favs!

I was testing Unum LAVS yesterday and thought it smell very much like Melograno, but cooler. I haven’t tested them side by side, but I still think that’s true.

Later I may put on vintage Jean Couturier Keora for the wonderful old sandalwood. :-)

Melograno was a surprise for me, too; I was expecting something sickeningly sweet and red-fruity, but Melograno turned out to have that wonderful incensey smell that you describe. I want to pay another visit to the SMN boutique soon and try Melograno on skin…

I wore Slumberhouse Norne! It’s more resinous than it is woody on me, but I really adore it so there! :P

I considered wearing Ore too, which is more woody, but I’ve worn it so much lately that I feel I need to cut back a bit. My old bottle is way more amazing than the current stuff so I don’t want to use it up too fast.

Seems like the only woody scents I really love are Slumberhouses.
