Friday scent of the day 1/30

Posted by Robin on 30 January 2015 187 Comments

Tom Ford Lips Boys banner

Happy Oud Friday! Our community project for today: wear an oud fragrance.

As always, do chime in even if you're not participating in the community project.

I was going to wear Yves Saint Laurent M7, the granddaddy of them all,* but I couldn't find mine so I'm in the next closest thing, Tom Ford Oud Wood.

Reminder: next Friday, 2/6, we're celebrating National Grapefruit month. Wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or Pomelo or whatever) is in the name of the scent.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

*"Them all" referring of course to oud fragrances from mainstream designers. M7 was hardly the world's first use of oud in fragrance.

Even though I really like oud, I haven’t yet acquired a fragrance with that as a main note. Time to remedy that.

In the meantime, I’m wearing Cuir de Lancome, and again, I extend my sincere gratitude to all who enabled me to blind request (not buy, as it was a Christmas gift) this one. Warm, beautiful, elegant, appropriate for all occasions. I love my bottle, and I’ll probably get another.

And I’ve decided – I’m applying for the Monday Mail. Need some inspiration, and you all are great at providing it.

Have a lovely day and weekend, darlings

      Ihadanidea –

I’ve tried to get into oud, but just can’t do it. I definitely respect it, though!

If you’re interested, I have about 3 ml left in a decant of Montale’s Black Oud. It’s, um, VERY oud-y. I also received Montale Aoud Velvet in my Olfactif sampler this month. Very pretty and accessible, but not me. Kgoodw2@hotmail.com

    SOTD = YSL M7

… And because I’m a wimp, I chased it with Le Couvent de Minimes Eau de Missions

In hindsight, I think I can handle more M7 ( I used 2 paltry half-sprays) and on its own. The layering softened it in a nice way. I just keep smelling good whiffs.

M7 ought to be a lotion! I don’t know if it ever was, or if Oud Wood comes in a lotion, but both make great layering agents.

Can’t find my sample of M7 either. (Thinking of Tama today – she sent it to me, just sort of out of the blue. Sweet lady.) But in the hunt for it, I came across a sample of Soivohle Carpathian Oud that came with my order of Centennial. I don’t know whether it’s demi-absolute or cologne, and apparently that makes a difference… might be cologne because there’s a distinct floral presence here, jasmine and carnation and violet. Also a bunch of dirt, the good kind of fresh moist just-turned spring dirt (as opposed to brown patchouli dusty dirt which I struggle with). I was expecting to hate this, but it’s nice.

I made sure I have my BK Rose Oud at the ready, though, in case CO gets weird on me.

I just now found my M7 sample and put it on the wrist that wasn’t wearing Carpathian Oud (which is pretty much gone now, after three and a half hours – so it must be the cologne, because most Soivohle demi-absolutes last for hooooooours even on me). M7 was very wacky for about ten minutes – sharp and strange and not pleasant – but half an hour in, it’s become a very smooth gentle woody scent. I’m enjoying it. Probably won’t wear this again, because I very rarely crave something in this genre, but I may hand it over to The CEO to wear at some point. I think I’d like to smell it on him.

Against the grain with this one, because I love it some much, and it generally receive so little attention. It might be my favorite western Oud centered fragrance, with Dior Leather Oud.

Ah, Rose Oud! I wanted to love this one so much, but ultimately couldn’t. Rose usually screams on me, no matter how much oud or patchouli you’re going to throw in the mix, with a few exceptions. Portrait Of A Lady comes to mind. Too bad. More money for Malle/Lauder I guess.

While testing out today’s options on paper this morning, I accidentally splashed some Phoenicia Oud Taiga on myself. According to the Blackbird website, the notes are: Davana, Geranium, Spices, Santal, Guaiac Wood, Cedar, Double Super Grade Hindi Oud, 50-Year Aged Vintage Deer Musk….. but I think it smells like blue cheese, and to be honest, the scent turns my stomach.

Couldn’t handle any more oud+musk–even though I’m still getting ghostly wafts of it–so I’m wearing Phi instead.

No oud for me today. I do have a couple of samples with oud but couldn’t get it together to find them to wear one.

I did get a new sample in the mail yesterday and so that’s my SOTD: Masque’s Russian Tea. Gorgeous tea, soft leather and a bit smokey scent. Wish I could smell the raspberry but nope, not to my nose.

    Happy Friday!

SOTD = BK Amber Oud, which I enjoy. Seems to be heavy on the amber…not sure I “get” the oud in it. The Rose Oud interests me. Might have to sample that.

There’s not much oud in it, if you ask me. It’s like… hmm, this is a nice sheer amber – wait, do I smell Band-aids? no, it’s gone… At least on me. Same deal with the Rose Oud, it’s mostly about rose and vanilla/benzoin.

I actually sort of like the smell of Band-aids, but I get that it appalls your average perfume wearer for its unwearability, and that it also appalls serious oud-lovers for its unrepresentative smell of real oud. 🙂 Since I’m neither an indifferent perfume wearer nor a serious oud lover, I seem to be okay with it.

I can smell the oudiness in the BK ouds, and as much as I love oud (didnt always- it grew on me), I too enjoy their wearability. Love both the Amber and the Rose Oud. JHAG is a rose oud too, I ought to do a side by side at some point..

You smell delicious–but I’m with you, I don’t think BK’s Amber Oud has much oud in it. I get amber, vanilla, spices, very nice and long wearing, but not the punch to the nose OUD I’d come to expect from oud-centric fragrances 😀 Be well.

Oh dear, still smelling the Lyric Woman from last night on my sweater and it is so not me! I feel like I had a couple of rapturous one night stands with that beauty, but don’t really want to eat breakfast with her. I am a fickle fickle perfumista! Anyone else had the experience of lust at first sniff, commitment to an expensive fb and then dumpsville? this is truly terrible, but I think I will swap it away next swap meet.

Today I will put on another sweater and my go to scent Imperial Opoponax to feel all is well again. Black later, after clients.

Ive had blindbuys ive taken into my home and have instantly regretted! But for the most part, having sniffed then shunned, at some point Ive developed a craving to go back and in many cases now they are constants.

I have many fragrances that at times I could say ‘that’s not me’, but in my clothing, makeup, and perfume, I am a chameleon. I adapt my look to my mood, and probably have so many perfumes for this reason too..

I think a lot of us are guilty for brief rapture of a fragrance. And I’ve forgotten who I’ve dumped. It’s good to have a short memory for these things. They make it out the door via swaps, etc.

As far as Lyric – it is so gorgeous, but so massive. I’ve been nursing the same 10 mls for about 7 years now, and I will probably have it that much longer as well. This is definitely one of those times when a large decant really helps to manage impulse control.

I have a 15ml decant of Lyric that I bought five years ago, and it’s only down to about 8ml now. Sometimes it’s perfect, but I don’t think I’d wear it very often even if I had a big bottle.

Memoir, though… that gets worn a lot.

Reading your post, I really think I would have been much better off getting a decant and trying Lyric that way. I saw the huge markdown on line and was trying to decide between Lyric and Memoir, but the Memoir reviews were so mixed. I think I made the beginner’s mistake of taking other people’s word for the goodness of the perfume rather than finding out for myself before taking the plunge.

I was lucky on my bottle of Memoir, but I’d already had a LD of it from a split, so I knew that I loved it. It’s tough with Amouage for sure. I’m still holding our for a FB of Beloved!! But I really should just get a large decant of it.

I know, it’s such a big perfume. I bought the 100ml bottle of EDP and will probably need to decant it out to people and/or leave it to a niece in my will. I can’t imagine using it all. It’s nice though, to have permission to just put it away and not worry about it.

You would do well for swaps if you decanted Lyric out in 5-10 ml portions. I actually decanted a 5 ml swap out of my original decant of Lyric! It carries a lot of swap power.

I’m in JHAG Midnight Oud, which I liked well enough to buy a full bottle almost 2 years ago, and now wonder why? It feels heavy and very much “not me”.

It goes with today’s theme in terms of name but not really on skin. I mainly get lots of dense saffron and rose.

    Happy weekend everybody!

Aww, I love Midnight Oud. It’s my go to big night out perfume. It makes new feel fabulous and I get strangers following me around to ask what I’m wearing, which surprised me at first because it is no Light Blue or Daisy. I agree that it’s not very oud-y though. Sorry to hear you aren’t feeling it!

I’m wearing that too! I just have a little sampler, and I almost never wear it. I think this is only the 2nd time. I feel like JHAG does nothing but variations on rose and patchouli, and this seems to have lots of both those things. I like this, but from that house I prefer the Vengeance perfumes.

Tom Ford twinsie! Plum Japonaise for me today!
I really enjoy the jammy, dark sweet plum and it also reminds me a little of those delicious Ume-shuu (plum wine) from Japan.

I was planning to wear 10 Corso Como, which I think is the first scent where I ever really smelled, or at least recognized, oud. But at the last minute I went with Mohur instead.

Mohur is a chameleon on me… sometimes an almost-too-pretty rose, and then suddenly there is a much darker, sort of funky undertone that keeps things interesting.

10 Corso Como counts? I’m definitely wearing that today! I’ve stalled with perfume application today because I don’t have anything with Oud in the name, so wasn’t sure what to do… what others are out there with oud that isn’t in the name?

I have no oud scents, so in the spirit of continuing to clear out my samples I put on Caron Narcisse Noir. I should have used the whole sample, because my little dabs are already gone. That is why I prefer minis to samples when I can get them. They are generally easier to apply, and I don’t have to dab.

Gee, hadn’t even realized this was going on when I spritzed some Bond No. 9 NY Oud on this morning. Loud and proud! I really do like the plum, honey and saffron accords with the oud. The rose is prominent, too, but I’d almost wish it were a tad bit in the background with more plum upfront.

SOTD is M7 (YSL). Got this in the mid-to-late 90’s, the SA at Nordies hated it, naturally I loved it.
It has mellowed out some, not as sharp as it used to be, but still very, very good. 🙂

After reading another post from Pyramus (about wearing M7 today), I must have my dates mixed up about when I acquired it. This didn’t launch until 2002, so unless there is some kind of oud timewarp, I got my bottle sometime around 2002, not “mid-to-late 90’s.” 🙂

    Oud glorious oud!! 🙂
My favourite oud today, AdP Colonia Oud. Oud and citrus and such good quality.
Went to the shops tonight and spritzed on Farenheit on on hand and Farenheit Parfum on the other. They’re quite different, and the parfum is very long lasting. It has a very deep spicy base in the Spicebomb manner.

I’m in YSL M7, the only oud I own. I bought it when it was launched in 2002; since it was the first big mainstream oud scent, as far as u know, I assume it has at least some real oud in it instead of the synthetics that are in everything today. I didn’t wear it much for years because it was so aggressive, but now it seems to suit me much better, so either it’s changed or I have.

I agree that it’s not super oud-y (unlike Solstice Scents Manor–a gorgeous oud bomb!–or Caron Secret Oud), but as you say, it’s a very pleasant scent; like a continental breakfast of fresh fruits and dense toast covered in rich jam served somewhere warm and exotic.

Scent twins with flannery in MdO Oud. I looked it up last night and the name has been changed to Oudh Osmanthus, which is much more appropriate for the scent. It’s a very wearable oud on me, the note is evident but not overpowering.

One of these days I will have to find some M7 to try.

I didn’t know the name had changed. It is a very osmanthus dominated oud fragrance, somehow the oud seems green to me, and the osmanthus sweetens it. There’s quite a crowd of MdO Oud wearers out and about today.

Like you, I’ve never tried M7, and I’d like to do so. I should track down samples of original and the more new formulation to sniff. It sounds fascinating, beast mode big 😀 Now why that fascinates me, I dunno, but I like trying things that people find scary! Be well.

As I mentioned earlier in the week I’ve been all in a dither over this day…I adore oud, have dozens of samples and about 5 bottles that feature oud….what, oh what do I choose? So I started last night after my bath and used Demeter Oud massage oil. I went to bed wafting the scent and drifted off to dreamland. This morning I dug out a sample of something new (for me) and am test-driving Piguet Oud. NOT OUDY ENOUGH! LOL So I just layered Agarwood by Heeley, one of my favorites. Later tonight I will use some pure agarwood oil a friend sent me from the middle east. A tiny bottle of oil that is almost brown and thick like syrup, and just about knocks you over when you sniff. She said it’s mostly used for religious purposes and not everyday. Ha, she doesn’t know NCT! Have I mentioned my husbands out of town? He’s not a big oud fan, so I am totally taking advantage of that fact and going whole hog today. I spent 8 yrs of my early childhood in India and those were formative years when it comes to scent. I will never be the “clean laundry” type of woman, it will always be “go big or go home”.

Try Demeter Amber too if you like that scent category, it’s soft and lovely. At one time Demeter offered a BOGO and I got doubles of both amber and oud. They don’t last long on the skin but are lovely when applied. Aedus has been my enabler for oud, they have lovely ones and are generous with samples. They have the Heeley.

I’m not really familiar with oud since I’ve never gone out of my way to acuquire samples as it didn’t seem like something I’d like. And from what I’ve read in the blogs, this is not really oud-y. It’s very nice, amber and vanilla and spice – reminds me of something I’ve tried before, maybe SDV or Havana Vanilla? Happy Friday everyone!

I respect oud, but I don’t enjoy wearing it. I did find my small sample of Montale Aoud Damascus, which is probably the most gorgeous straight up rose I’ve ever smelled, and the only oud I could ever wear b/c the oud part only lasts for about 10 minutes before it gracefully bows out and goes away. So…. Today I opted to wear Amouage Memoir Woman, because it’s as close as it’s gonna get to oud for me (incense is my next most challenging accord), and it’s “middle eastern”. And gorgeous. And managed to keep a smile on my face as I was shoveling my driveway this morning. Cheers!!

I had forgotten I had some of those Montale rose scents in sample vials. Don’t think I have Damascus, though… I really rather enjoyed Aoud Roses Petals.

I have a smidge of Roses Petals too. It has a more going on than Damascus. I tried this last night as well to see if either would tempt me for today. Montale is good with roses. Damascus is pretty much just sweet, heady roses with a few light dashes of other accords to lift it up. It smells a lot like you took some of the Annick Goutal Rose Absolue and just added a dash of oud and some very light musk to counterbalance the swoon of roses. I haven’t tested it in years, and put some on last night. It quickly dries down to a very delightful rose soliflore type, but its not boring. Best use of classic damascus rose in a fragrance. I like it better now than I did years ago, and I’m starting to think…. Hmm, maybe I need a bottle of this? Another rose is always good, right?

I think Aoud Damascus was the first rose I tried that didn’t go sour on me. It is a beautiful rose. It’s probably my favorite of the oud-heavy scents I’ve tried, too.

Good to know I’m in good company! There are so many Montale’s I’ve not tried, and there are only a few I like, including this one.

I’ve been looking forward to today as a prompt to get out Amouage Homage Attar. Hmmm, high quality rose, oud, and frankincense, accented with citrus and sandalwood. There is a wind chill warning here today, though mostly sunny, so this is a perfect day for some Arabian heat.

Hi nozknoz. I saw your comment about the Nesti Dante soap that you ordered. I’m glad it passed the sniff test. I store mine with my sweaters and it keeps them smelling nice and fresh. You might want to try this while you work through that Claus Porto soap. Which Claus Porto scent are you using by the way? I’ve been wanting to try Claus Porto for a while now but I’ve already got an embarrassingly weighty stash of soap as it is.

Hi, Jonas, glad you checked back! I love the sweater idea – no need to waste that pleasant aroma.

It’s the rose soap. One year I bought a box of six Claus Porto soaps on sale after the holidays. The wrappers are so beautiful, and they really last, which is an advantage in terms of value but a disadvantage in terms of trying new soaps.

I don’t have any oud, so I went with another botanical defense mechanism: Borneo 1834.

I’m wearing Oud for Highness, which I had to make myself put on, but wasn’t the oudfest I always remember it being – the oud is very soft and pleasant, not unlike Caron’s Secret Oud (most likely the same chemical).

I never wear this, so I should probably get rid of it, but I’ll never be able to sell it for what I should because Krigler is so under-the-radar as a perfume house and I can’t resign myself to taking the loss. So perhaps this is the right answer after all – just wear it. 🙂 It’s really very pretty. I was soooo happy when I got this. I had been looking for a soft rose oud. As is usual, though, anything where I have to think once, twice, three times about whether or not to buy it? Doesn’t get that much wear.

I really wanted to put on Oil Fiction instead, as I was kind of down with the rose idea but not really feeling the oud. But I’ve been happy with Oud for Highness today. 🙂

Today I am wearing Opium Noir on my left wrist and Clinique Aromatics in White on the right.

Aromatics in White is a masterpiece and I can imagine wearing it at some point, albeit not too often. The original was a bit poisonous on me.

Opium Noir would look good as part of a Juicy Couture collection, but as part of the Opium team … I’ll say it this way: if the original Opium was Scarlett O’Hara, Opium Noir would be Belle Watling. A disgrace if ever was one.

Of course you may. Douglas has it. It’s a chain of stores much like Sephora, but I believe they’re German.

        I live in Europe.

Mohur Extrait, the most gorgeous rose I know. I must admit that I’m quite a fan of oudy roses, from Amouage Epic and Guerlain Rose Nacrée to AC Rose Anonyme. But Mohur beats them all, by a mile. So rich, round and delicious. Wish a bottle would materialize in front of me, due to some unlikely quantic fluctuation.

As ususal, I had totally forgotten the weekly theme in the morning.
Since I was packing for a business trip, I tested a sample from Killian which I got in a gift with purchase bag from a Dept’. store. I did not look at the name of the scent.

It smells like candy: both Prada Candy and hard, maple carmel candy suckers, whatever it is. (It undoubtedly costs alot more than either of those). Probably more Imortelle than Oud.

Not the sophisticated business image (or scent image) I was looking for, and it will not make it into the suitcase. Not a bad scent for those with sweet tooths.

A recent discovery for me is The Different Company’s Oud For Love. Personally I can’t identify a strong oud note in it – but that may be because I am used to inferior synthetic kinds. It is a beautiful spicy balsamic scent with plenty of floral notes too! Unfortunately it’s on the same price-tier as Amouage – which is more than I am happy to spend on a single scent! Perhaps if I control my perfume-spending for some months I will re-consider 🙂

Like so many others today, I wore M7! I’m surprised that after the never-ending oud-affair, most of us seem to own relatively few oud scents. And, M7 is still the go-to for oud! I layered mine with Mille et Une Roses, which has worked quite well.

This is a very interesting theme…I’m also amazed how many people have M7 and considering how ubiquitous Oud has become, how few of us really have much (or any) of it!

I had also got the impression that M7 was regarded by many as a rough prototype of the genre, but it seems like I’m not the only one who still prefers it to its descendants!

I am wearing L’Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh, which I just adore. Doesn’t seem like there was ever too much buzz about this one, but I feel very comfortable in it. It is “dirty” enough to spark my interest, but sophisticated and subtle enough to be perfectly polite. It also comes in one of the prettiest bottles I own.

That one sounds really good — do you get much of the tagetes note? I love that in perfumes like the old Niki de Saint Phalle (haven’t smelled a recent version).

Since rational evaluative thought comes after more than a half cup of coffee , my choice was made by “the name has Oud in it ” criteria. Thus I wore Lanvin Oud and Rose ( #2 in the trio , Orange Ambre and something Vetiver are the other two) today. I can still smell it slightly. I spritzed one spray of Just Cavalli on while trying to see if I needed a bottle and it drowned it for the past three hours( meh. No I didn’t get JC- too bitter almond custard-y for me . Might be good for a Hypnotic Poison lover as a summer scent.). I bought Vince Camuto (original).

Currently debating purchasing one or more of the A*men flankers-Malt,Wood,Havana,Leather,Taste of Fragrance. Any opinions?

Was looking forward to today, but woke up headachy and crabby and not really in an oud mood. Went digging for a couple of untried Montale samples (from a set that was supposed to include Black, Red, and White, and had none of those). While hunting I found a sample of Amouage Opus VII that I won in a drawing very early in my perfume obsession. I can’t remember if I even tried it on skin when I first got it–it must have leaked a bit in transit, and the smell wafting from the little box was, as I recall, rather terrifying. Anyway, I ended up with Opus VII on one wrist and Montale Aoud Ambre Rose on the other. The Opus VII was easier to wear than I would have guessed, although certainly possessing the furriness and feral qualities I remember Kafka discussing in her review. The Aoud Ambre Rose opened with a lot of winey rose that unfortunately was sour on me, unlike Aoud Damascus, which is still the loveliest rose I’ve smelled in perfume. Anyway, I got headachy and annoyed and wound up scrubbing both, which was a mistake with the Opus VII, as I managed to scrub away the good parts and leave the irritating part.

Anyway, I don’t know whether my taste has improved or I’ve just become jaded. I remember how excited I was to find Trish McAvoy Black Rose Oud at Nordstrom, because I’d never smelled anything like it. Less than two years later, I think it’s kind of nasty and artificial-smelling.
