Kiehl’s Aromatic Blends collection ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 3 August 2012 17 Comments

Kiehl's Aromatic Blends collection

Last month, Kiehl’s launched a new family of products called Aromatic Blends, “Pure Scents from Around the World.” I was initially uninterested in trying them, since I have bad memories of Molton Brown’s similarly travel-themed “Navigations Through Scent” line (harsh compositions, ugly bottles and prices even more ridiculous than their names). However, I do enjoy visiting the Kiehl’s counter once in a while, and once I’d sniffed the Aromatic Blends, I was ready to adjust my original reaction.

The four “blends” in this line are Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit, Orange Flower & Lychee, Fig Leaf & Sage and Vanilla & Cedarwood. I’m not really sure how “naturally derived” or “sustainably sourced” they are, but I do think their simple, landscape-inspired arrangements suit the overall Kiehl’s aesthetic. They’re nicely made (with one possible exception), they’re simply and attractively packaged, and they’re reasonably priced — in other words, they do what they set out to do. Here are a few quick thoughts on each fragrance, from lightest to richest.

Parfums MDCI La Belle Helene ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2011 53 Comments

pears

I like pears, and I like apples, but as a general rule, I don’t like either in my perfume. Whether that’s because of how they’ve typically been used — from Donna Karan Be Delicious to Viktor & Rolf Eau Mega to Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia — or because I just plain don’t care for the smell, is hard to say.

La Belle Hélène, the latest from Parfums MDCI, promised the pears (and the violets) from the dessert Poires Belle-Hélène, minus all the fun stuff calories (vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce). On the plus side, it also promised osmanthus, one of my favorite floral notes, and the perfumer in question, Bertrand Duchaufour, is responsible for one of the few perfumes with (noticeable) apple that I like: L’Artisan Parfumeur Traversée du Bosphore. Oh, and plus he is responsible for quite a few other fragrances I was willing to pay real money for. So I was looking forward to La Belle Hélène, even though it costs more money than I would ever spend on a perfume. So far…

Viktor & Rolf Eau Mega ~ perfume review

Viktor & Rolf Eau Mega fragrance advert

We are not interested in niche. Fashion is already for a small audience. We like to communicate with as many people as possible.1

That’s Viktor Horsting of Viktor & Rolf, explaining the “blatantly commercial”2 appeal of their debut fragrance for women, Flowerbomb. Anyone hoping that they’d go for an edgier aesthetic with their followup, the newly launched Eau Mega, will be disappointed: Flowerbomb, while neither edgy nor esoteric, was somewhat over-the-top; Eau Mega, with its “extravagant freshness”3, is the sort of clean and pleasant and safe thing anybody could wear anytime, and presumably, Viktor & Rolf very much hope they will.

The tag line for Eau Mega is Megafy Yourself, and the fragrance…

…celebrates a new icon of femininity, in the form of a superheroine who, aided by her fragrance, transforms reality into her own universe of beauty and glamour and “megafies” the world.4

What does this megafied superheroine smell like? Well, like melon water and pear…
