Friday scent of the day 9/10

Posted by Robin on 10 September 2021 226 Comments

Happy Friday! Today is also Karl Lagerfeld's birthday. Our community project for today: wear a Karl Lagerfeld fragrance, or a fragrance from his stints at other fashion houses (Chloe, Chanel, etc). Or, wear a fragrance he wore (scroll down, although I am sure he wore other fragrances as well...feel free to investigate).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: day 2 in Annick Goutal Nuit Étoilée.

Reminder: 9/17 is International Country Music Day. Name a favorite country music song and wear a fragrance to match.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Karl Lagerfeld Fall-Winter 2019 campaign.

I used to have Lagerfeld Photo but if I didn’t swap it away I’m damned if I can find it so I’m wearing Todd Oldham on a whim. It’s got that basic oriental structure but the main impression is caramel syrup ladled over warm fruit, and it’s absolutely charming. It was a failure, despite being excellent: I think it arrived too late, in 1995, when warm scents were on a bit of a downswing, plus there were over 200 new scents launched that year, so most everything was drowning in a sea of newness, a new launch every other day. (Compare that to last year, though: Basenotes lists 1300 new scents, and I’m sure that’s an undercount.)

I have some Todd Oldham jeans (that fit me for a like 5 minutes before becoming too tight) that I bought in 1997 or so and that my 13 year old now wears!

:D I’ve started handing off clothes to my tween, too. Haven’t fit me for years but they’ll fit her imminently. And so much has come back and then back again that my old clothes are just fine now.

Very interesting facts to note about: Todd Oldham (also, wearing something on a whim is often the *most* fun), and the number of perfumes. Can we believe a dedicated nose exists for that many new perfumes?

Love Sun Moon Stars!! I bought a bottle of it years ago before I even knew whi Karl Lagerfeld was… I mentioned it on here a couple of times that SMS smells like Cola and European cheesecake on me and to be exact it is sweet but less sweet than American one and has orange peep and raisins added to the crust. So wish I had a bottle of it now.

Yay for booster shot; we’re getting ours ASAP. Sun, Moon and Stars is the first bottle I bought at a flea market that was basically empty, but was so attractive that I got it on the third or fourth visit to the booth when I found it still there (and for $3)! Note to self to see if I can get that last little spritz out.

Hi Happy888cat – your tea sounds wonderful.… may I ask what brand and/or how you came by it? I love oolong and that sounds like a perfect blend! May also be joining you after lunch in No 5 , although possibly the L’eau : )

Vintage Chloe parfum today. Got a little bit of altitude sickness yesterday–I was sort of dizzy and headachy and had some shakiness when we got to the top of Pike’s Peak. Still, I could have used a little more time at the top since I didn’t have much time for views after getting a snack

I have no KL fragrances, none of the ones he wore, no Chloe, and very few Chanels at all! So today is a wear-what-you-want for me, with L’Heure Fougueuse. Glorious in the current weather.

I never owned a single KL fragrance, and original Chloe long gone. But if it were a little cooler I would have worn Theorema. He probably had nothing to do with it but he did shoot the ad campaign.

I have only one Chanel to contribute, so I’m back in 31, rue Cambon. It may be my only Chanel, but I have a vat of it. I’ve sniffed a lot of the Exclusifs, but someday I should probably smell more of the regular ones…it’s a big hole in my perfume knowledge (if not my perfume drawer).

I find the regular ones kind of separate into two camps for me. On one side: great stuff (basically all the numbered scents plus Cristalle.
On the other side: nope (Chance, Allure, Coco M., Gabrielle etc.).
      I’m undecided about Coco.
But – they are easy to try out, so go for it! My daughter loves Coco Mademoiselle. And a friend keeps a bottle of Chance in her car to freshen up.

I have tried most of the Exlcusifs over the years and I like most of them. My most recent “discovery” (it’s not a new release) was the Cologne in the line. Worth seeking out if you are ever near a place that carries them!

Not participating in the cp. SOTD Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre, because I was craving for it!

I am in the office today because I wanted to organize a couple of things, before my return full time again on Monday. News is that there are several covid breakthrough cases here in the office. I am pretty anxious, like many other employees. Just hope I don’t get sick and bring it to my mother, who is too fragile to face a breakthrough. I will try to be positive and face the new challenges with a positive attitude!

    Happy Friday! ?

    YAY! Happy Heavenly Birthday Karl.
I was wearing his Karl Lagerfeld Pour Homme today. It’s a powdery whisper of floral nothings. Better in sillage than up close. It’s not terrible but it’s also not as exciting as I had expected something with his name on, at such a late stage of his life and career. It smells like a cash grab. The bottle is terrible and fun and kind of wonderful in its poverty of design.
Had a bath and now I’m in a brand new house to me: Rouhanne Perfumes. They are a Bangladeshi company. Grandiflora Ginio is the perfume name. I think it means Flower Djinn. It’s interesting, a white floral with green facets and smoke.

        Thanks missionista,
Yes, I liked Grandiflora Ginio. It’s apparently a natural perfume but the longevity and even the smell is a bit too created for all natural (to my blunt instrument of a nose). This morning after 8 delicious hours of sleep the whispered remains were like the warm, bosky, vegetal smell of turning a healthy compost heap.

HA! Yeah Jalapeño, it’s strange. If I walked out of the room and came back the initial reaction on returning was OOOOH! Then I’d sniff my wrist and be, oh, let down.
I’m already pretty close to nuts so it’s not a long drive.

It is hard to stay away from my absolute favorites like Chinatown or The Time. Today is The Time. Crisp, tea leaf infused, milky opening with a bit of perfect bergamot (bergamot and lemon are the best tea citruses), then sheer a bit lactonic iris and all that on a beautiful base of black tea… My perfect tea scent.
I postponed trying The Time for the longest time. I kept adding it to my cart and taking it off for months. What made me so indecisive is all the reviews that it is so fleeting. Just like the Asian Green Tea it stays all day on me. It never just goes away and it lingers. I haven’t ever reapplied it yet because there was no need to. I don’t understand all the negative reviews!! Last time I sprayed it at 1pm I still smelled good on my skin after 6pm like a perfume is supposed to do… Smelled it at 10pm on my hair and shirt, honestly!!

Tooth pain is better but now we’re back to the slamming tension headache. Aaand this morning I was greeted by the dreaded email from Canada Revenue Agency saying they had an important message for me (cue feelings of doom and terror). Fortunately it turned out to just be an acceptance of our April audit documentation, no further amount owing at this time.

Too stressed to wear anything other than vanilla, so I’m in Spiritueuse Double Vanille.

I sympathize on the CRA emails! I lived in the US for much of my early life, and my only experience was that if I was hearing from the tax authority I was in TROUBLE. However, my first CRA letter after moving to Canada was to inform me that I’d missed the fact that my US Social Security payments could be deducted as a tax credit, and they owed me a decent amount of money. (Cue shock: If the IRS ever determined you overpaid them, they’d *never* tell you. Never ever.) But I still get that bit of anxiety in the pit of my stomach whenever I see an email from CRA.

Non-compliant with the CP. Testing several things, for the second or third time…
Parle Moi de Perfume Oud Papyrus – surprisingly good – pretty smooth for an oud, don’t get “masculine” from this. Might be much better in colder weather, not sure I need to buy more tho.
DSH Jade from a sample – one of those greenish scents that get more interesting each time I wear it – I may get another sample when my sample is gone
Yves Roches La Vie Privee from a sample a kind NSTer sent me – a 1988 style floral which I like – cute vintage bottles going on Ebay for $150+ – don’t like that much!
Chanel Paris-Deauville – I should like this but it is slightly off putting to me for no good reason – maybe there is secret tobacco in it or something? I like Chanel Paris-Riviera much better from this line.
DSH La Danse des Bleues et des Violettes – a lovely light floral – violet and lilac with a musky note that comes and goes. I enjoy this one a lot, and will for sure upgrade to a large decant/bottle of some sort when this sample is gone. I have almost as many DSH perfumes as I have Guerlain bottles. And I seem to gravitate to the scents for which she felt a need to make a long involved names… LOL!
Happy Friday, I am done with on-call for a few weeks, and am doing a drive-through flu shot this weekend with adorable hubby – gotta do that chassis maintenance!

In other news, I found out that one of my cousins and her husband, who both live in Hawaii, have COVID. The husband has it worse and is in the hospital. The first thing someone asked is were they vaxxed and since no one knows for sure, we’re assuming they were. Having said this, out of all the first cousins on dad’s side (there’s 35 of us), she would be the most likely anti-vaxxer.

I am leveraging my summer hours Friday and will be leaving at 2pm to go … (window?) SHOPPING. I am in the office today so NYC is my oyster. There are many NYPD around despite me being in midtown.

I wish. One of my cats is so obsessed with Angel that whenever I wear it I have to spritz some onto a cat toy so that she will lick that rather than trying all day to lick me. I assume there is a catnip note somewhere in the Angel cacophony that attracts her.

On my skin, it’s a spicy, vanilla-centric incense. I got a decant from AnniePerfumes (thanks, girlfriend!), and it’s a definite winner. Seems like it could be quite changeable, though, depending on one’s chemistry. It doesn’t settle down into one thing or another — it feels like it jumps from spices to sweet vanilla to dry woods to warm amber.

I guess you can always turn to the niche/independent perfume houses.. I have discovered a few very much worth sniffing.. like Papillon or Dusita. But the Guerlain tumble has also got to me! They were my favourite house but looking like they are going downhill. Or at least outside of reasonable/ affordable prices.

She encouraged me to try the new ones being launched but honestly they dnt sound good..oud..rose lychee? Meh. I have tried one or two from Papillion and Dusita and liked them both. Had I remembered that I had it, I would’ve worn KL Sun Moon Stars on a lovely sunny September morning. But I’ve already spritzed one tiny little spray of vintage KL, my favorite Thanksgiving scent, because its mix of clove and spices and orange harmonize beautifully with the aromas of everything I cook that day!

I learned this morning that a dear elderly friend, who’s vaccinated, has Covid, is not doing well, and is in hospice. One of our community’s greatest volunteers, he has had numerous health issues but always worked thru them never stopping his service to others – it really upsets me that after all he’s been thru this da*n pandemic that won’t go away could finally do him in.

Looking forward to a much welcome escape from reality later as we head out to a night Sox ballgame- I’ll be joining those of you in AG Nuit Etoilee, a lovely scent to wear under the stars . . . and fireworks after the game!

Wishing all a great weekend ahead and that you all stay safe!

KL was so good! One of the great unsung scents of the eighties. My mom had a half-full bottle (which I am quite sure I gave her originally) in her collection, and when I smelled it just before she died it had gone completely to hell, ruined and unidentifiable, probably from having been kept in a bathroom cabinet for decades. I’m glad you still have some to enjoy.

Thank you for sharing your mom’s story, sorry her bottle went bad. I’ve had mine a long time, don’t even remember where/when I got it. I keep it under my bed with others in a closed container on a cool floor and really only wear it around Thanksgiving when the weather is cold here and it still smells really good. Yes, it’s definitely a powerhouse 80’s scent – a little dab’ll do ya!

But I like the BoSox and will cheer for them when they’re not playing my Sox – Chris Sale was one of my favorite players and I was sad when we traded him to the BoSox and will always root for him. Besides, my DIL is a Boston native, and when we visited Fenway a few years ago, I bought Red Sox World Series Champion caps for my grandtwins, which they wear proudly along with their White Sox jerseys! SotD for the CP: Felanilla. I haven’t worn it in a while, but it works quite well for me. Don’t know what Uncle Karl would have thought, but I love that he loved his kitty so much. I get that. =^v^=

Hi all, a bit late to the party today as I was commando all morning. Feeling teary and bleary after a session with a new therapist and still very stuffy and tired from my recent illness, so I’m now in the happiest, pinkest rose I own: Rose Flash. Wild night of lightning and lots of small fire starts and a surprising amount of rain in my town (and I left the laundry on the line all night, foolishly). Outside everything feels beautiful and fresh and washed clean after this first moisture in six months. I know it won’t last and wasn’t “real” rain, but it sure was lovely!

If Rose Flash won’t lift one’s spirits, what fragrance can? I love it. Glad you got some pleasant aftermath from the rain.

Perfume-free as yet, I’m planning a trip to the local perfumery to see what I can sniff. We’ve still got some Covid restrictions, but getting better. Auckland, our biggest city, is still in a hard lockdown, but on the right track.
I had a bottle of KL about 25 years ago, I loved it, but can’t remember much about it after all this time.

I’m wearing Chanel Boy for the CP. I really love this perfume. It just wears perfectly on me. I’ve still got plenty in my mini bottle, but I may need a FB one of these days.

In other fragrant news, last night on my walk I finally clipped off a gardenia from one of the row of bushes in the neighborhood. I’ve been enjoying these gardenias on my walks for the last three or four weeks. It’s so amazing to catch its scent as I walk by the little vase. It wafts pretty well into my kitchen when the window is open. It’s definitely helping to brighten my day while work is stressing me out.

I’m in vintage Chloe from a mini I picked up on evilbay. It is in decent condition considering the age and unknown storage situation, but I think I need to decant it into a spray bottle to get the full effect. There is a lot going on with this one but it is difficult for me to distinguish any particular notes. I do get a lovely peach/nectarine tho.

Posting later than usual because last night’s presidential announcement hijacked my anticipated to-do list at work today. It is always the short weeks that feel the longest!

It’s not happening to me so much since last year, but I totally sympathize with your entire day being hijacked by a government announcement. I still check the CBC as soon as I wake up because they’d make an announcement early, Eastern, and I’d have to spend the day reacting.

Chanel No. 19 for me today! I love it at all times, but I had several meetings today that required a strong backbone, and No. 19 always makes me feel I can stiffen my back as needed! Plus the weather has turned from unbearably humid punctuated by torrential thunderstorms to cooler, clearer September days. No. 19 feels perfect for those.

I’m in Chloe from a vintage mini; its marked 1/8 oz Chloe on the bottom. Just a couple dabs on my wrist.

I went through probably 2 bottles of the KL original way back in the day. Got a bottle of a more recent version now but of course it’s dfferent from the original due to reformulations.

I probably wrote that is a confusing, unclear way. I had Chloe way back when Lagerfeld was written on the front of the bottle. My current bottle of Chloe doesn’t have it.
