Friday scent of the day 8/3

Posted by Robin on 3 August 2018 376 Comments

It's Friday, and even better, it's the first Friday in Peach Month! Our community project for today: wear a peach fragrance.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

It was sheer luck that I found my Parfums de Nicolaï L’Eau à la Folie fairly quickly last night, because it was not where it should have been. Anyway, I do smell peachy.

Reminder: on 8/10, wear a fragrance by Atelier Cologne, Acqua di Parma or Amouage, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter A.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Since I finished Tresor yesterday and I was too lazy to try to find another one and Robin’s post on vanilla yesterday I was inspired to drain my sample of Winter Woods….thunk :)

Coincidentally I wore WW and Incense Pure (one on each wrist) at bedtime last night, and it was the first time I’ve been able to smell the vanilla in WW.

I bet you smelled great last night!!!! Did you get the last of her bottles? I am smelling my wrist now and WW is definitely all about the vanilla on my skin….it is so good!

I got one of her last 10 bottles of Incense Pure, but the Winter Woods that I have is a travel-size spray from a year or so ago. So funny that you get All The Vanilla, and I have to compare it directly against something else to be able to smell vanilla at all.

Winter Woods is the only SSS scent I was able to try – I’m saving my last little bit for cooler weather.

The lamentably discontinued CSP Vanille Peach, sharper than their celebrated Vanille Abricot but also less sweet so there’s no chance of being cloying, perfectly acceptable for a hot sunny day such as this one.

Not the most recent iteration, but I had a sample of it way back when, and it made me laugh out loud — it’s just so unexpected and ridiculous and fun. I can’t imagine wearing it but I’m glad it exists.

I’m in Jil Sander No. 4 (spell-check tried to change that to “Oil Sander” – wrong ambience altogether) today. This was my daily monogamous
‘fume love back when I first met Mr. G, but I don’t wear it often anymore. It IS quite lovely, in a 90s kind of way.

    Slumberhouse Kiste.

The wildly boozy bourbon note had put me off before–every time I opened the sample vial and got a whiff of that, I put it away. But that vanishes within the first two minutes on my skin, and it’s rolling around voluptously in the imaginary sunshine, all honey and peach and tobacco. It’s surprised me. I thought I would hate this. Now I’m slightly fretful I only have half a tiny sample vial left.

It’s absolutely lush, and I’m lemming like anything. And this is inconvenient given that there is precisely nowhere in this country that sells Slumberhouse, even if I was planning on buying anything right now…

Kiste was so bourbony on me my husband told me it smelled like I had just finished a two-day bender. It was just too much. It barely smelled like a hint of bourbon on the friend who received the sample from me. Oh well.

I had forgotten L’Eau a la Folie had peach in it! Thanks for the reminder, Robin! I went ahead and spritzed that. It’s odd, too…I wasn’t in love with it when I bought it, but it smells just right today, and more complex than I remember it being, but not too much for the heat and humidity. Not sure if the scent changed (my bottle is a few years old, so maybe it deepened a bit) or if my tastes did, but we’re getting along ???? today.

I’m officially peachy today in the original Chloé, from a mini I found in an antique shop on Wednesday night. We were down in town for a tea tasting, and had some time to shop. Hubster was a bit amazed that I found perfume in what was really a junk shop. ????

This is really lovely in the drydown, once it gets there, but sweet during the first hour or so. Me likey.

I suspect it is from the 80’s. There are two bottles like mine on eBay, and they are both listed as ‘vintage 80’s’ parfum minis. Hexagonal flattish bottles with a peach colored round plastic stopper, with the Chloé label reading vertically up the front of the bottle.

Maybe someone can confirm it for us. There’s definitely a lot of peach, ylang and honeysuckle. Tuberose also, but I try to ignore that part. ????

I intended to wear peach today, really I did! But the Thrill of the Thunk overcame me when i spotted two very nearly empty vials: Jul et Mad Terrasse à St. Germaine and TF Ombre Leather 16. Yep, I put em on and off the vials went. The St. Germaine is no match for the Leather; shoulda worn it by itself, but oh well. I do love the Leather, and will eventually get around to smelling the new Signature version of it.

I’m with monica404 in not having fruity perfumes. I’m off today and having a lazy morning but I just had a sotd idea – Badgley Mischka body lotion. The perfume is discontinued, I owned a bottle and swapped it away, it was gorgeously fruity but I just didn’t wear it and I have an appointment today that calls for something quiet – Gucci Rush was fun to wear yesterday but it would be too much for today. Happy Friday everyone :)

I’m wearing Desert Rose by Dame Perfumery. It does have peach in it, quite a lot actually. It confuses me a bit because what kind of desert has peaches? At any rate, I really like it and when I drain my very generous spray sample I may buy a full bottle. It also fits in my mini-theme of “I hate humidity and wish I was in the desert” – Mojave Ghost on Wednesday, Arizona yesterday and Deer Rose today. I’m going to continue with some Tauers over the weekend.

    Have a fabulous Friday!

I’ve seen this compared to Mitsouko which somehow I’ve only tried once, and that was a sample that I’m quite sure was off as it smelled like gasoline. I have a mission this weekend to try some fresh stuff.

Turns out I have quite a few peachy smelling things. I’m wearing a general misting of Roger & Gallet Fleur d’Osmanthus with a spritz of L’Eau a la Folie on each wrist. I also have a spritz of Jardin de Ecrivains Marlowe on the back of my hand. I haven’t worn this much (and it was this perfume that made me promise to never get 100ml bottles anymore).
I do like it- similar to the PdN in feel. It’s peachy with a bit of a cool, dankness from frankincense.

Shangri La, just two small spritzes, for cozy, peachy, warmth. I really enjoyed smelling myself as I drove to work in the drizzle.

When I hear the words Shangri La, I always think of Jem and the Holograms. It was my favorite show as a little girl and there was an episode where the ladies went in search of Shangri La. It stands out as my favorite episode even.

I have several peach scents in my collection, but as I want to dual sync with Basenotes Friday sync ( Bertrand D day ) I’m going to do one of my favorite layerings.
For the Peach – Lady Stetson ( about 15 -20 cologne sprays)
    For Bertrand D- CDG Avignon ( 1-2 sprays) .
Still debating this though, I might do the combo this evening and pick a straight up peach like Gwen Stefani L Lamb for the work shift I was called in for.

I saw her interview and read everything I could find, its a great story and I can’t wait to visit her store in London or New York.

It’s really fun playing with the ice cream maker this hot summer! Mine is a vegan custard base, made with soy milk and coconut milk. I heat a couple of cardamom pods in soy milk, then add a bit of salt, maple syrup and date paste to sweeten and cornstarch to thicken. Once cooled, I then whip this with coconut cream (the stuff in the can) and then process in the ice cream maker for about 10-15 minutes.

    SotAM = L’Heure Bleue edt
    SotPm = No. 5 edp

Good morning, NSTers, today I did the thing where I stand in front of the perfume bottles and let my hand wander over them until something pulls me in. It’s perfumed dowsing, I guess.

My hand was drawn to L’Heure Bleue, maybe because peachy Mitsouko shares the same style of bottle, or more likely because L’Heure Bleue calls to mind the feel of the soft downy fuzz of a peach. Lovely No. 5’s peachy-aldehydes are on tap for tonight.

    A favorite recipe for peaches:

    https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/3783-original-plum-torte

I love this recipe with ripe peaches. Have also made it with Italian plums, nectarines, pitted cherries, blueberries, apple chunks, or thin sliced pears. The recipe suggests a springform pan, but it is perfectly delicious baked in a buttered pie plate or square baking dish. There is something magical about carefully (or haphazardly!) laying the fruit on top then watching it meld with the batter as it bakes. Try it! You’ll be delighted, I promise. :D

Ha! We should start an NST cooking/baking chaIlenge, a match the perfume to the recipe kind of thing, to encourage culinary effort. I used to bake a lot but not lately. When the weather cools in the fall I hope to get back to using the oven.

My L’HB edt is modern, bought a few years ago. I like it very much in summer weather, about three spritzes is perfect. Though it has a reputation for fustiness the edt never overwhelms me. I love the florals. Even if I didn’t love the scent so much I’d still want the bottle, the shape is so pretty.

I never thought of LHB as fusty. It is very much a scent of its time, but there is also something timeless about it to me. Just my $0.02 worth.

I had originally intended to wear Péché Cardinal, which is a peach smothered in white florals or white florals smothered by giant peaches, but have instead chosen the lovely and wistful Chant d´Arômes. A gentle aldehydic floral with some peach.

SOTD = DSH Scent of Hope

Peachy aldehydes with buttery Iris. I really should wear this more often!

    Commuting Woes No. 442
Subtitle: Bad habits of ordinary people while commuting.

I’ve already mentioned manspreading, nose-picking, removing shoes and/or putting feet up on seats. The other day, someone was scratching her head, then looked intently at the fingers that did the scratching AND then smelled said fingers; rinse and repeat. Thank goodness I didn’t see picking the nails and eating whatever substance was found there.

I read it. She discovered that fragrance ( in general,,,cleaning products to perfume ) gave her headaches and made her feel unwell. She found a survey that supported her belief that most people have, at one time or another, experienced health issues as a result of being exposed to fragrance. This led to an examination of the saturation of fragrance in modern society, the dangers to our health caused by “dangerous” perfume chemicals, the ‘shady’ business of fragrance labelling and lack of transparency and lack of proper monitoring of the perfume industry. This led to the conclusion that fragrance is harmful and should probably be banned from public places….I followed up on the papers she cited etc. and there were some quite big leaps in the way she interpretated the ‘facts’. I don’t doubt that perfume makes her feel ill. The book did irritate me a little …how perfume can be identified as a problem ( and not, say, general air pollution) Her novels are more interesting though….Australian.

Kanuka, thank you so much for this synopsis. I had not heard of this book before. It sounds like an idea that would be better suited to writing an article, rather a book but that’s my opinion

It’s not a terrible book because it’s well written arises from a genuine, personal interest in the subject but it didn’t persuade me. But the science and statistics are not very convincing. I expect that many of us could say we felt nauseous after thirty minutes in a Lush shop but it might be a stretch to say that perfume therefore makes us sick. She also delves into the link between fragrance and hormonal problems. There was an interview with her onthe radio here. I will see if I can find it.

No. There’s a certain degree of Better Call Saul’s brother Charles in the book. At the start of the book she tapes up the area between her hotel door and the door frame to keep out the smell (a diffuser,I think) in her hotel because it makes her ill. One of the things that I couldn’t understand is the way perfume can be isolated as the culprit for a headache…in some instances I think things liked tiredness, stress, dehydration, allergies, air quality, over-work, heat, loud noises might also have something to do with it? But, she mentions being at the opera and being forced out by a person wearing perfume (Angel?) and I can get that. I also don’t understand why the chemical compounds scenting natural materials are not a problem, only in synthetic materials. Or how hormone disruption can be attached to perfume but not to other medications, foods etc. I read the book quite carefully as I was going to review it for a medical/literature blog for the university. So, I checked the research and asked for help with the findings from a couple of scientists. I didn’t write about it in the end. I am not the target audience. The book did make me think about the way I wear perfume and its impact on others.

I haven’t watched better call Saul, but these are all very interesting points. It sounds like the author has some serious environmental sensitivities, and is also a talented researcher and writer – a book was inevitable ????

I have nothing peachy with me. At home I have Mitsuko and a very cheap peachy rose scent I got at Walmart created by Calice Becker.

I’m doing last minute packing of things I’m keeping that belonged my parents. I have to be discerning because of space issues and cost of shipping (one too low and one too high.). My Mom sold Avon and also got a bunch of mini scents over the years. I was going to toss them, but now I think I’ll keep some. If only for the collector minis (shapes include snail amd mouse)

Long way around of saying I pawed through and and saw that Avon Charisma has peach! Top notes are pretty well gone, but I splashed some anyway. It’s quite nice. I’ll probably just finish it off the rest of the day.

She has Pleasures and Beautiful in minis also, as well as DKNY Pure.

SotD Eau des merveilles bleue (Hermès)
    SotE Hinoki (CdG)

    And yay fridaay!!!!

I kicked off the weekend with a glass of witbier (wheat/white beer? I Dont know exact translation)
and a portion of ‘bitterballen’ (cant think of a translation either, but i know they have an english wikipdia page haha – called Bitterballen, of course).

    Have a great weekend everyone!

No, witbier is a style of wheat beer.
Not to be confused with Weizen/weissbier. :)

This beer is perfect for summer, it has a fresh citrusy/herbal taste to it, sometimes with hints of elderflower and/or coriander.

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_beer#Witbier

Hoegaarden is a very famous white beer. My favourite witbier is Korenwolf.

Jiji, in my experience, a milk stout is a dark, slightly to somewhat sweet, malty, and heavy bodied beer. Not something I would enjoy in hot summer weather. Delicious in cold and wet weather, though.

On the other hand, now is the perfect time for a witbier or hefeweizen! ????

Something called Simply Belle that FragranceNet sent me a free sample of. It starts out with peach and orange as advertised, then disappears. I won’t be buying any.

I’ve been watching a BBC series called “Desperate Romantics”, about the Pre-Raphaelites. The major reason to watch it is Aidan Turner as Rossetti, looking exactly the way Rossetti should have and didn’t. A fine addition to the collection of bad boys that are fun to contemplate from a distance but that you wouldn’t want in real life.

I haven’t read everyone else’s comments yet. But playing along in Tresor by Lancome, which has peach notes (according to Fragrantica). I can’t actually smell any peach in this.

I wore J’Adore yesterday, because Fragrantica again said it had peach notes, and while it was definitely fruity floral, I could not distinguish peach from anything else in there.

Just got home and did an experiment with some almond oil and a few sprays of Terracotta to try as an oil version (for tomorrow). Got waaaay too much oil, so to counter the oil volume I had to overspray the Terracotta into the oil. It might just work.

I also found my ages old body spray of Victoria’s Secret Love Spell, it’s supposed to have peach? Just gave myself a few sprays of that as well. Soon driving off with the in-laws for the weekend so I can’t be too scenty right now.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

The only really peachy thing I have is Rochas Femme, and you really don’t want to sit next to me in Florida’s swampy heat if I’m wearing it. It is overwhelming and not in an unexpectedly delightful way. So I ended up with a thorough spritzing of Fragonard Verveine (note to chocolatemarzipan: I’m using this up the way you went through Assam of India that summer!).

    You all smell FABULOUS!

I have only 2 perfumes with peach notes and both happens to be Kilian. SOTD is Flower of Immorality, and 1 spray of Forbidden Games on the right arm. FG is a power house and 1 spray is enough in a hot and humid day. I can still smell the peaches on my right arm after 8 hrs.

Not related to CP – My dear NSTers, any recommendations for fragrances shopping in Barcelona? Anything you would recommend bring back from Spain that’s hard to get in NA (I am in Canada)?

      https://undina.com/2017/06/22/visiting-three-monarchies-part-2-barcelona/

      Potentially worth visiting:
      – Perfumeria Julia (similar to a Sephora except stingy with samples)
      – the U.S. has no Yved Rocher boutiques so my sister and I were overjoyed to shop there. Some perfumes are boutique only.

Flowers of immortality did last me a solid 5 hrs, despite the heat and humidity. In fall and winter it lasts a whole day. And usually my skin does eat perfume and needs constant reapplying.

Sabater Hermanos for scented soaps. Santa Eulalia has their own fragrance line and carries other niche brands as well. El Corte Ingles has all the Spanish drugstore / pharmacy lines, some upstairs in the beauty department and IIRC, some down in the supermarket in the basement.

If I had to give advice to my younger self, I would say that it is better to go to a different company (in a different industry, if possible) for a new job rather than staying in the same company for a new job. There’s a loyalty penalty and retirement benefits (excluding 401(k) / Pension Plan) are not what they used to be, if they are even available.

I have stayed there for many reasons. My employer is close to home and my travel time and expense would increase significantly if I were to change jobs. I have good benefits, four weeks of vacation and a state pension, not an IRA. At this point, I’d settled for a job change within my organization but it’s fairly small and there aren’t any openings at the moment. Plus, my spouse is self employed so I carry the benefits. The two people who were hired to replaced my retiring coworkers have both commented on the workload and both worked in similar positions elsewhere so I know it’s not just me.

We’ve run out of comment nesting levels!

It is unsettling when colleagues leave for any reason, all the more so when your cohorts do so. Hopefully, things get better for you really soon and management does something about the overwork situation and/or your move to a better situation within your current company.

Re: reasons for staying – makes sense for you given your circumstances. I’m mentoring an analyst who needs to secure a “permanent” position (really a continuing position since no job is permanent) who said she has a strong preference for staying within the same company. I asked her if that is pretty much the only criteria, ANY role where she meets the qualification should work. I advised her that given the multiple job possibilities, she should come up with a list of criteria by which she will assess all the jobs (e.g. overall compensation structure, location, job content / prep for her next role, etc.).

And…maybe I never relayed this story. A massive layoff was once done by picking every other person on a list. Everyone did the same job and their performance was all similar to each other. It ended up being the fairest way to do it.

I’ve been away from the corporate world for many years but I am familiar with these scenarios. It really isn’t fair but then, life rarely is.

I was laid off from a job because they used LIFO (last in first out) to choose. Felt awful at the time but sometimes there’s no easy way to do it. Grateful I received severance pay while working at a new job I liked much better. Hope there’s a silver lining for your former colleague.

She wonderful because she retired! She is a smart woman who will easily find other work, if she wants it in the future.
My comments about layoff were in response to hajusuuri’ post about her co-worker.
Thanks for being so sweet Tiffanie!

Hugs, Petunia! It’s tough saying goodbye to people you have enjoyed working with, especially after so many years.

I love peach fragrance notes at this time of year into September (although I never eat peaches, but I love nectarines!). It was way too hot today, though, to wear the vintage Tresor, too hot for Mitsouko, even too hot for the original Burberry (not sure what it’s called these days, Classic???) that is my very favorite peach-scented fragrance. So I kept it very simple and went with the original Yves Rocher Peche edt and its luscious lotion, which is, well, just ‘peachy’, and topped it off with Dame Peach Blossom, Violet, and Vanilla edt. A delightful summer combo!

Tonight’s Friday night concert-in-the-park features a Latin swing band and, somehow, ‘peach’ just doesn’t seem intoxicating enough to accompany salsa, cumbia, and meringue. Will have to search my fragrance wardrobe for a better fit . . . .

    Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!

What drink are you pairing with your concert?

Grandkids have been here for 3 days and I’ve been on the run with them constantly so no time to give much though to pairing, just went with the standard margaritas (for us, not them) and some soft lemon cookies. They had sparkling lemonade from France (thank you, Aldi!). Taught my shy almost 11-year old granddaughter to salsa. She loved it so much she’s going to ask mom for salsa lessons!

It was! The soft, Latin rhythms were perfect for a sultry, summer night.

This morning I applied some Mitsouko body cream from a fairly ancient bottle I picked up somewhere. It has separated but the creamy part still smells delicious. After my nap this afternoon I added spritzed of BK Dangerous Liaisons. Another scent I’ve owned for years without noticing It had peach. To me the roses and cinnamon in it stand out the most. The combo is nice and slightly sweetens the BK in a pleasant way.
