Friday scent of the day 9/22

Posted by Robin on 22 September 2017 394 Comments

Jason Wu for Target

Happy Autumnal Equinox! (Plus, happy Hobbit Day.) Our community project for today: wear one of your "top 10 of fall" fragrances (unless it's spring where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of spring" scents).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

No gold stars for me today! I am at the beach, and it's going to be 80 here today, plus, I am really not ready for fall. I am testing Jason Wu Eau de Parfum.

Reminder: 9/29 will be Skank Friday! Wear something skanky. If you need help, try here or here. Suggested by Dawn and Ihadanidea.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

No glod stars for me either. Ninety and humid here today so I went to a summer favorite: Imaginary Authors The Soft Lawn. Love the occasional whiffs of new tennis balls.

No 19 Poudre today..sunny..beautiful..we have fall light without the temperatures of autumn

Burned some Nag Champa this morning as my way of embracing & honoring the change of season, embracing darkness and lightness, and letting it flow..

Song for today requested from my retro monkey, is walk like an Egyptian. At 2.5 years old, not sure where this is all coming from…

I am loving this fall light, and the fact that its darker in the morning and everyone (but my better half and the cat) has been sleeping a little longer.

We try to give my little toddler exposure to all types of music, but on the weekend when my husband gives me some alone time I enjoy some Django Reinhardt and some sexy guitar by Ottmar Liebert. Music without words to get the earworms out..

So ready for fall in every way! Robin, I know you are enjoying your 80 degree beach day, but I’m ready for some 65 degree breezy cool weather, sweaters, boots, pumpkin spice everything, and not SWEATING when enjoying a hot cup of coffee!

Sort of participating in community project by chance with SmellBent Chili Vanili courtesy of a care package from the generous LisaD. This would be a great fall scent! If fall ever comes…

Warm and sunny here (25-26 C/about 78 F), so I took a softer, lighter fall option – Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile EDP. It’s an earthy and golden autumn fragrance with a retro feel, but at the same time it’s a soft and elegant floral.

Still a bit warm here in southern France. Was commando until a went to the pharmacy and spritzed the new Roget & Gallet cologne, Tubéreuse Hédonie (signed by Anne Flipo). Sheer, fresh and modern (with the ubiquitous pink pepper!) without feeling cheap, and lasts nicely on skin, for a cologne.

One thing that’s nice about this R&G range, even at its price point, is that they’ve called out the perfumer. Kudos to them for that.

lol. I just wrote in a response to Erin’s post that L’Envol is massive and heavy on me (and on my husband.) I didn’t add it in that comment, but will now – it’s also wayyy masculine to my nose.

Now I’m starting to wonder if I got the wrong perfume in my decant… Maybe I can find some in a store to try out.

If you love one of the scents (not from reading the description but from actually smelling them), you can probably buy it. But keep in mind that you will be paying more than $1 per an hour of its burning. For the price of one candle you can buy a decant (and for the price of 2 to 4 of them – a full bottle) of perfume that will bring you joy for much longer than 60 hours per candle that you’d be getting.

We are also experiencing hot weather, but at least it isn’t supposed to rain. We have had rain every day since Monday, which isn’t helping the clients waiting in line for help from FEMA, etc. However, today it is supposed to be dry, but in the 90s. So, while it isn’t very autumn-like today, I am in one of my favorite fall scents, although I love it in every season – Dzongkha.

I don’t really smell much, tbh. Mostly it’s a slightly jammy rose plus some slightly bitter oakmoss or patchouli. I like it but don’t need more than I have.

Love TR. The tobacco in the name refers to the texture, not the smell, according to the perfumer. There is no tobacco note. But it is a great scent, it was a toss-up between TR and PHI for me this morning.

I would love to do this again in a month when the temps aren’t in the 80s. I’m in SSS Equestrian, which is on the border of too much for today’s heat and humidity but I couldn’t resist.

Triplets.. this is a new love for me. Day off today so I mixed a few drops in some moisturizer after my shower and then topped up with a few sprays. It wasn’t too overpowering so I then sprayed a bit on my shirt. When I was outside checking out the garden I caught a whiff of something good in the breeze. It was the Chergui.

This new bottle doesn’t seem as strong as the sample I have. May have to try them side by side later on.

    SotD = Masque Romanza

Woke up thinking of this fragrance, but is it right for fall? On this cool morning the resins and woods are front and center, the flowers sing in the background.

    Happy Friday, everyone!

Wonder where I put my sample of Romanza… I liked it, didn’t love it, should probably test it again.

I love my Le Temps d’une Fete — another narcissus-with-woods scent — all the time, but I think I might love it best in fall. The basenotes seem to come to the fore.

I hope you will test it again. The woods-resins base is great. Narcissus and hyacinth notes rarely smell like flowers to me. I get the ghost of a floral note leaning into the greenish fug of a flower shop, which I enjoy. I find Romanza compelling and thoughtful. As it becomes more familiar, I find myself liking it more.

If it felt the least bit fall-like I think I’d have opted for Ambre Sultan (having just acquired a lifetime’s supply — due to all the changes chez SL — I’d better consider it a favorite), but since it doesn’t I went with the somewhat more all-rounder Guerlain Vetiver.

He also brought to my attention that Phlur works with a company that takes discarded pine tree stumps and extracts the essential oils which goes into Greylocke.

Honestly, Greylocke is the only vetiver centric fragrance that I have ever taken a real liking to.

It’s going to be a bright sunny day here in the desert – no surprise there – and I am practicing gratitude by being thankful that the high will be an entirely habitable 75 degrees F, rather than summer’s usual 112. The workers with a backhoe outside my window, digging up the street, are kind of harshing my gratitude vibe, though, since they woke me up to let me know I’d be out of water for a while. Perhaps I should focus on: 1) having running water in my life; 2) having the water main break on the city’s side (rather than mine); and the great big grin on the worker’s face as I squinted up at him though a mass of slept-on hair when I answered the door.

I’m going to wear Poet’s Jasmine today – my crazy blind buy from the Haute Look sale arrived yesterday! Reminds me a little of a Hermessence – high notes, lots of citrus, kind of wispy – but it’s got some intrigue in there, in the middle. The packaging is awfully pretty.

Fall fragrances are some of my favorites. I love me a good amber or vanilla, but we are supposed to hit 90 here today- I’m not complaining (I don’t think, lol)- so I just couldn’t do it.
Instead I’m going with this summer’s love: LeLabo Bergamote 22. One of the longest lasting citruses I’ve tried. I got a compliment recently at the end of my 12 hour shift- now that’s good staying power!

    Happy autumn! ????

I am comparing Coromandel EDT and EDP today…my first time trying the EDP.

To my not-so-trained nose they are quite similar so far. The EDT is a bit more jarring with the patchouli and the EDP is slightly smoother.

With subsequent sniffing ????, the EDP is sweeter and more feminine and rounded.

The EDT is drier and more masculine and bit dirtier.

Well, sweeter is maybe a detractor for me. I like the dryness of the original-I’m pretty sure it’s the good dose of Chanel aldehydes combined with the other notes that feels like I’ve been caught in a dust storm. Same issue with BdI.

To my nose, they pulled wayyy back on the patchouli in the EDP, so it’s missing that chocolate-y ganja richness. That’s what I love about the EDT thus the EDP is a no-go.

For the first time in a longgg time it was nice and cool when I got up at 5:15 to head off to Mysore. Musc Ravageur for the project. I went full out–shower cream, body butter and oil, perfume. This might be a top 10 anytime for me, I love it so much.

TO CLARIFY: I AM NOT OFF TO MYSORE, INDIA THE PHYSICAL LOCATION. (one day I will definitely go, however.)

I was off to Mysore practice. Off to my yoga shala. :)

“The Mysore style of yoga asana practice is a particular way of teaching yoga within the Ashtanga Yoga tradition as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the southern Indian city of Mysore. There are some differences in this method from the usual modern way in which yoga is taught. The class is not “led” as a whole but rather all instruction is one-on-one within the group class setting. Students practice their own portion of the Ashtanga sequence of asanas at their own pace. The teacher assists each student individually by giving physical adjustments & verbal instruction.”

yes! you nailed it! :D yeah, I wasn’t naturally a morning person either, but you get used to it. it’s just forcing yourself to get up the first couple times, then it gets easier. like anything, with practice, it gets easier!

Dzing! is in my top 10 of all time, so it’s basically in my top 10 for fall, right? Anyway, it’s what I’m wearing today.

I have a few pieces from that Jason Wu collection still! I gave away some of them (the shorts never fit me properly, and my sister liked the cat shirt so much I gave it to her), but the ones I kept are still great.

yay for Dzing! I shall wear it this evening for a fun night out. :)

I admire Jason Wu. His clothing is beautiful, refined, and looks remarkably comfortable.

I sniffed the Jason Wu fragrance recently and couldn’t decide what to think. Perhaps my nose was overwhelmed by other scents I had tried at the perfume counter that day. I’m glad Robin’s testing it, maybe a review (here or elsewhere) will help me parse through it.

No SOTD yet, but thinking of going with Azemour les Oranges. It’s a gorgeous golden morning here, high supposed to be 62F today. Mr. G and I are working through some sore leg muscles from yesterday’s hike (which, due to SOMEONE’S misreading of the trail map, turned out to be rather longer and steeper than expected), so we’re taking things easy and planning on taking kpaint’s advice and trying Oystercatcher for dinner this evening (we were much too sweaty and exhausted for it yesterday). Oh, and I retried FM L’Eau d’Hiver yesterday and fell completely in love with it. Uh oh. :)

BTW, have you ever been to the Port Townsend farmers market? If you’re into farmers markets, it’s amazing and worth the trip over tomorrow. It’s gorgeous and people make all kinds of incredible food. One year someone was making huge pans of paella on open flames; another year a woman was making 3 different kinds of drinking chocolate in copper pots – delicious with a fresh croissant from the bakery next door.

Phlur Greylocke…and I am shamelessly taking double points as I think this is great for both fall and spring.

Next week’s CP will be tricky as I only have one which qualifies as “skank”…APLS…although with the weather we are having it will register as honeyed resinous amber on my skin (it only gets skanky in cooler weather)….I will probably start wearing it tomorrow and then all week long.

The following week I may skip the CP all together as I have zero scents with lily…at least when I looked on fragrantica…all those listed are either drained or I never owned to begin with.

I’ll definitely skip the next week’s CP… Not only I do not like/wear anything from that category, because it’ll be hot, I won’t be able to wear even what somebody else considered to fit that category when we had a weekend poll (Amouage Gold).

Can’t focus today so I haven’t got dressed or put on perfume. My daughter had her ultrasound yesterday to learn the sex of the baby. It’s a boy. However, they also learned that there is a significant deformity in the right foot, but they don’t know how he will be affected by this in terms of his mobility, and if it is an indication of further congenital abnormalities. There will be of course further testing, but for the most part they won’t know everything until the baby is born (scheduled to be in February.) my heart is aching for the stress this not-knowing puts on my daughter and her husband, and their 2-year-old daughter as well. SOTD will probably be something incense-y, to put a smell to my prayers.

I don’t swim in pools unless there’s also a sauna there. It’s the only way to get the chlorine out of your skin. I also slather conditioner on my hair to deep condition while I’m sweating. There was a community pool up the street from our old apartment that didn’t have a sauna so I never went, but I did consider trying to turn my bathroom into a steam room to do a post-pool sweat-off.

My H used to spray himself down with powdered vitamin C (from Trader Joes) dissolved in water post-swim and that helps a bit.

Wow, thanks for the tips!! Ok, looks like I’ll be setting aside a bit of sauna time after each swim. So, when does the conditioner come in? Do you do: pool, rinse, conditioner, sauna, shower?

I think I mentioned earlier that our complex pool is a saltwater pool, and you said you greatly preferred those. Now that I’m swimming in a chlorinated pool again, I miss that saltwater pool. After just two days of chlorine, I’m starting to wonder how anyone swims sustainably.

I’ve never swum in a saltwater pool, but I’ve always fantasized about it! I think I may have said that I need my own saltwater pool in my own yard, which hasn’t happened yet ;) (including not having my own yard.)

I do: pool, wash & condition hair, sauna, shower and rinse hair. It’s a long process but worth it, and especially in deep winter it’s something I look forward to. It seems to also keep the chlorine-induced all-over dryness down.

    Happy Equinox!

    1) Very cool in the mornings this week- yesterday morning, my heat pump kicked into reverse and started to WARM the house when the temps hit 48F outside. Reminder: Just a week or so ago Portland was under a blanket of 90F heat and smoke from forest fires. Now it is cool and for the past few days, VERY rainy.

    2) I had a MRI scan yesterday! I was most impressed with the machine and the resulting images (although being in the machine is very confining and the noise is eerie and loud). Long story short: I have ridiculous fibroids that have been acting like vampires, squeezing out other organs, including my bladder and kidneys, enlarging my poor confused uterus, and making my thyroid work overtime. The issues of fatigue and lack of energy can be traced back to these ungrateful growths. Treatment plan is embolization of the blood supply leading to the fibroids, with recovery of about a week and ful recovery in 6 months. I am so excited!

    3) Am in wonderful Cuir Russie by Chanel. Perfect, perfect, perfect for fall, and if it was more widely available and teensy less expensive I would call this a super classy no brainer.

        Yes!

The technology is impressive- we can now see what precisely what is wrong with you (physically). Along with the blood work and such, there is a care plan. I just an email from one of the providers that I should work only part time after the procedure until the end of the year, or at the very least work from home. Apparently she is ready to re-diagnose with fatigue if I do not slow down!

Hello NST friends! I haven’t had a chance to post in a while. Glad to be able to today. My SOTD is Black Orchid by Tom Ford. I guess it could be considered a fall fragrance – it is quite bold and a little goes a long way. This was given to me a while back from a generous NST friend. I wasn’t aware of the theme today, but some how it fits it quite nicely. Have a great weekend everyone!

My kid’s preschool is closed today for teacher training AND we’re trapped at home due to the ongoing construction at our house, so it’s pretty much a perfect storm of whining right now. Haven’t got a shower yet but I did spray on a bunch of 4711, which is a year-round favorite. Will probably wear some Dzing later. Happy Friday!

Penhaligon’s Ostara. It is very warm here today, 88 degrees. Not ready for Autumn fragrances just yet.

My husband and I, along with another couple are taking a trip to Providence & Newport, RI and Nantucket. We are leaving tomorrow. I know a lot of you have mentioned Providence Perfume , and we will visit there. I am not sure of any other perfume “must-see or do’s” while we’re there.

Also, we picked a bad time to go. We’ve been watching the weather very closely.

Good luck on your trip. I would think there would be at least one perfume boutique in those environs.

In general, in September it is too earlier for where I live to contemplate Fall perfumes. But today weather cooperated a little with our community project (it is 18C/64F – and it’ll be back to 31C/87F next week), so I’m wearing Tea for Two. Sweet and smoky – just what I wanted to celebrate the official start of Fall.

TfT on me is dry, unsweet, and lacking oomph in cool weather, but perfect (spicy, a little smoky, just the right amount of sweet) on a hot day. I wonder if it’s body chemistry, or skin temperature, or just nasal receptors that make the difference?

I would think that body heat/skin temperature plays the biggest role in this difference of perception.

The weather here has been very autumn like recently. Lots of mist and drizzle, no sun but with lots of spring new growth. The perfume I have worn often is Bapteme du Feu. I just find it very appealing . A bit sharp to start but then mellow, a bit dusty and sweet…it seems somehow transitional, if that makes sense. The other perfume I have been wearing is Smell Bent jasmine tobacco. I don’t like heavy jasmine scents ( they make me gag a bit) but I like how the tobacco impacts on the jasmine , it seems to bring out a vanilla note? I ended up wearing JM mimosa and cardamon yesterday and that was nice for spring. Alex was in surgery for seven hours yesterday and will be setting off airport security metal detectors ( 9 pins and what looks like a length of bike chain ) but it’s looking okay. A lot can happen in a week. I think a trip to my off site perfume storage is called for. Happy weekend!

I hate to see summer go too, but fall has it’s unique beauty and joys.

I’m wearing for the 3rd time this week Safran Troublant and each time I’ve increased the number of sprays which has really helped in having it stay around longer. This is such a cuddly scent to me. I’m pretty sure I’ll be buying a FB in the coming weeks. Lord knows I’ll be flying through decants if I don’t.

5:10am : Cat barfs on my pillow. Eject cat and pillow.
5:25am : Smoke detector starts ‘low battery’ beeping. Get ladder, eject smoke detector.
6:10am : OCD cat decides that dirty pillow Must Be Buried. Scrape scrape scrape on carpet.

Morning, NST. Looks like a bright shiny day for the election, not that I’ve been out into it yet. My day: Saturday housework, helped by three kittens in investigative mode; a trip, out west to the breeders house: they sell the same cats’ meat as the supermarket at just under half the supermarket price; a pedicure; just another day, then. I’m wearing a perfume that is an oddity in my collection, or perhaps not so much an oddity as an orphan, or even not so much an orphan as just a quiet being who gets overlooked. Hmmmph, how I do go on sometimes….the perfume is Chypre d’Orient by Molinard. I bought it at Molinard when I was there, carted it home –it’s a biiiiiig bottle; they didn’t do travel sizes– I put it on the shelf in my loosely alphabetical-by-house organisation, I see it every day, and I hardly ever choose it. When I do, I love it heaps. It’s warm, interesting, and moderately sophisticated, so why do I not wear it more? Dunno. I suppose others capture my daily imagination more, yet I might like them less. I think my perfume behaviour could easily be classified as peculiar.

    Be well, all.

Oh, and I meant to say that the photograph in the header today really appeals to me. A cat on a table and a falling vase of flowers (just checking to see that gravity still works) is all too familiar to me, and I love all those cool blues in the dress. I hope the perfume is cool and blue as well.

I’ve been to a Molinard’s boutique once before but that was in France. Never heard of them ever since. They do seem to be a house with no ambition to become an international giant. You cannot not respect that =)

Chanel 28 La pausa, or do they call it just La Pausa now? I’ve been in live with Cuir de Russie and 31 Rue Cambon for so long that I couldn’t properly test 28 La Pausa for a long time. But now it’s time has come. I’m so captivated and amazed by this scent that I’m actually considering buying a full bottle out of my iMac savings :)))))) Even my husband liked it… So there are now excuses not to buy.

It’s only Fall-like here in that the daytime highs have dropped to the 90s from the 100s (though they’re bound to climb back up again). Eh, no matter since Dzing! cooperates in pretty much any weather.

Swaps are beginning to trickle in and I’m already overwhelmed! So many lovelies to test and revisit.

I began the day in Dior Midnight Poison, thanks to a generous NSTer who was kind enough to share hers with me. It is patchouli/fruitchouli heaven. Ahhhh. It’s since been drowned out by spritzes and sprays and paper tests of newly arrived perfumes. I was a little gassed out for a while, lol, but there are many gorgeous smells going on here.

I’ve had 3 major projects going on this week that I’m getting wrapped up: Swaps, swapping out my summer closet to my winter one (an even bigger task than usual since my off-season clothes are stored off-site AND because I’m now sharing a closet with my H that’s smaller than the ones we previously had to ourselves,) and laundering and cleaning up a bunch of stuff to take to consignment. The house has looked like a war zone all week but ought to be back to normal by the end of the weekend.

    Happy Friday, all!

SOTD = one tiny spritz of Tauer’s L’eau before it goes off to a new home. I finally worked up the courage to try it on my skin, and we just do not get along. I suspected that would be the case when I first got the sample.

SOTD = Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue

This is a favorite practically all year except for hot humid days. I enjoy its earthy irisy goodness. I like its office friendliness even though it has heft.

This is it – the Countdoen to the Ugliest Jeans. The No. 1 dubious honor goes to: (words fail me so you have to look for yourself)

I believe the Saks beauty event is still going on. I got mine and was pleasantly surprised at the wide sekection of samples. It included a sampke of the JM English Oak and Red Currant. Now all I need is to snag a sampke of the hazelnut so I can layer as Jessica suggested!

      Words fail me.

I got my Barney’s order earlier this week… sans Beauty Bag. When I called to complain, they said they’d run out (with an audible shrug). So I’ve just returned most of my order. I wish they’d had ‘for spite’ as one of the return codes. (cue Jerry Seinfeld)

I actually did it at least once but with Saks.

They do NOT really expect me to go with “while supplies last”? If you can count other products when selling online, you can count GWP as well! Especially, when they’re having those big events.

Wellllllllll….I saw many such jeans with bigger strips of fabric missing from the knees section, so much so I wanted to ask who took a bite out of the pants. The best one was a leopard skin patterned denim, with more shreds and cutouts than fabric left over

I was looking at my Infusion d’Iris Absolue decant today but decided to leave the last drops to wear when it gets a little colder – and then decide what to do about it :)

I wonder how you managed to find those jeans… Were you searching for “ugly jeans”?

I happened to be perusing the Sahalie catalogue and saw a bunch of patchwork / embroidered jeans. Not that I was looking to purchase a pair but I wanted to see what’s out there as I have a soft spot for retro look embroidered jeans. I started with “patchwork jeans” and it snowballed. After being flabbergasted by the selection at shein.com, I ended up searching for “extreme tattered jeans” and the rest was history.

I have teo retro look jeans – the one below and the boot cut with dark and light pink daisies on the front pockets:

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, happy to see jeans with a high waist and wide hips. On the other hand, they are truly hideous.

OMG those jeans!!!! Cannot be unseen. :( but yes they deserve the no1 spot. Haha.

Today I saw a woman walking by wearing jeans, a bomber jacket, and underneath that jacket…….only a pink bra-like top.
It looked like a sports bra. She was not even athletic or fit, no she was quite chubby.
      Cannot be unseen.

Fall always makes me think Leather, for some reason. I’m wearing L’Artisan Traversée du Bosphore, cotton candy and leather to me, although I can smell a little apple if I look for it. Not entirely out of summer yet, here, though–it was just a hair too hot and humid, and the sweetness annoyed me. (Maybe just not feeling very sweet myself.) I should have gone with Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau, or maybe even my last little bit of Amouage Fate Woman.

Tomorrow, for a non-profit board meeting, I think I’ll go with Hermes Un Jardin en Mediterranee. It was going to be Gianfranco Ferre Ferre, as chilly an Iris as I can tolerate, as I and the majority of the Board were planning to vote out our increasingly intolerable president. However, for what I think may have been the first time in her life, she seemed to sense it was time to leave the stage, and quietly died last week, saving us the trouble.

    Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

Ha! For me Traversée du Bosphore is a hot weather perfume, I took my decant to Hawaii a couple of times and loved it there but in cooler weather this leather is a little annoying on my skin.
