Friday scent of the day 8/11

Posted by Robin on 11 August 2017 271 Comments

Guerlain Vetiver collage

Happy Vetiver Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with vetiver, if you have one. (Need ideas? See 5 perfumes: vetiver fragrances for fall, winter, spring, summer.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in vintage Guerlain Vetiver, and yes, I do smell pretty fantastic.

Reminder: 8/18 will be Fugly Friday. That's the opposite of bottle porn Friday...wear a perfume you own (or just like) despite the ugly bottle. Suggested by Nebbe.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It really is lovely…the passionfruit is juice, the orange blossom light and the vetiver is not so grassy and damp…it’s great training wheels for a vetiver newbie or one not drawn to vetiver (that would be me -LOL!)

Tauer’s Vetiver Dance for me. This was my breakthrough Vetiver – so creamy underneath the vetiver.

Have a fantastic day my excellent smelling friends.

Mugler Angel Muse, I’m using the sample I have today, vetiver is listed, it’s nice but I can already tell I like the original Angel EDP much better.

Muse had to grow on me, now I love it. I see them as (or smell them) as totally different perfumes.

I confess I’m not much of a vetiver fan at all! SOTD is Chanel No. 19, where the vetiver is noticeable to me but not intrusive.

French Press coffee this morning and today is my day “off”

Planning on heading to The Strand bookstore where I will get lost for hours and hours in books..then maybe a tea somewhere..

    Confession, I don’t own a single Vetiver.

Was going to do a Haiku instead..will write one later when I finished my coffee

TF Grey Vetiver for me today, from a sample. I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. I have six sprays on, and I’m thinking I maybe overdid it. So last night at work, my eyeliner was melting down my face, a woman customer told me, and as I started to wipe under my eye with my finger, she reached over and did it for me! A total stranger touched my face. I believe it was a well intended gesture but it freaked me out. I am starting to think that the strange people hajusuuri commutes with, are the same people who shop at my store. Lol

Unfortunately, no, it was not motherly. If I hadn’t been at work, I’m certain I would have said something or even removed her hand. Instead I just finished our transaction and said have a nice day.

      Hello,
Is it a vintage version? I haven’t smelled the new one yet but I love the old one. I was in Grasse in the early 80’s at Molinard’s and my grandmother bought a bottle that I would always get a sniff from the bottle. It did not become her favorite, Samsara did but I always associate that perfume with this period and my grandmother.
      Have a great day!!!

I’m not sure! I got it in an NST swap, but the label makes me think it was originally from one of the decant sites so probably modern? I can’t imaging any other version smelling better! but am open to surprises.

I’m in Prada Infusion de Vetiver. Someone posted a link to the Prada Infusions sampler set on Fragrancenet a week or two ago, which I purchased soon after (whoever you are, come forward and claim your enabler pin!). I’ve ended up liking nearly everything in the set and I highly recommend it! Once I finish the samples I plan to choose two or three to buy in mini bottles.

Twins on the Infusion de Vetiver. I also recently purchased these due to the comment on here, so a double enabler pin is in order.

We are getting ready for a garage sale with my in-laws tomorrow in their city, about 1/2 hour away from us. It’s going to be a street-sale so hopefully there will be lots of customers.

I’ve done some culling of my collection for the sale tomorrow (mostly pre-perfumista products) so that will lighten the load.

      Have a great weekend everyone.

I was thinking about what vetiver fragrance to pick for wearing, but I went with pure vetiver instead. I have created a perfume spray a few months ago at the extract or pure perfume strength from bourbon and java vetiver oils diluted in 99 pharmacy ethanol that I wear from time to time.
So today I’m in pure bourbon+java vetiver. It’s very raw and smoky!

    Robin, you smell wonderful!

Finally a Friday SOTD I can participate in! (I never seem to have whatever’s featured, but I love vetiver, so today I have choices.) Still at breakfast, and pondering whether I should use vetiver day as an excuse to dig out an old sample of Les Nez Turtle Vetiver. Given the heat and humidity around here, though, it feels like a beach day (though I have to spend it at work), so I’ll probably go with The Different Company Sel de Vetiver, which always feels beach-y to me.

Still on my Noir Epices – I get the real bottle today, so I wonder how that will compare to the decant, if any difference. Read an article about Tom Ford so I might spray Black Orchid in the air since that one is a favorite of mine. I do have AG vetiver from the generous perfumelover67 so will spray that in participation for half-points. ???? Have a great Friday!

Thanks all. There was a lot of damage in my neighborhood but no injuries that I am aware of, so we’re grateful for that. My toddler and I were home at the time and she found the whole thing pretty exciting – she RAN into her preschool class this morning to tell her teacher about it. We also lost a solar panel (for a water heater) and have a small hole in the roof, so hopefully our insurance will get things moving quickly.

    SotD is Dryad.
It has a little bit of vetiver

But for tonight I planned Vitrum, by Sammarco. Its very vetiver. And also very smoky.

Btw, i tried Nuit de bakelite a few days ago.
It was fascinating: with a very green and vegetal opening, a bit of a boring (and not very easy) plastic note in the middle, and a great finale with tuberose, woods and tobacco.

I’m wearing two Vetiver creations by Isabelle Doyen, who is capable of creating really bold and daring scents. The first is her original Vetiver for Goutal and the second is the even more powerful Turtle Vetiver Back.
I’ve never even tried vintage Vetiver by Guerlain, I love the current version of it, so I’m sure it used to be even better.

Rained last night and to quite Christopher Robin, tut tut looks like rain, for then foreseeable future. Not wearing any scent at the moment, Pilates is harder than it looks, but I’m enjoying working out first thing every morning, part of a healthier life goal I determined to maintain. Post shower I think, L’eau Froide, perfectly refreshing for what looks to be a muggy afternoon. Happy day all!

    Hello everyone,
So many great vetiver perfumes listed and being worn today. Vintage Vetiver Guerlain is always a must. So yes Robin you definitely smell heavenly. I didn’t see Encre Noire which is so good too IMO. I like vetiver but I find it too manly, dry and earthy in general for me to wear. That’s why I usually like its component, vetiveryl acetate much better that makes a wonderful bottom note for floral perfumes such as N 19 for example.
Besides Habanita that I never wore but like, I became quite bewitched with the Baiser du Dragon by Cartier !!! A Woody Oriental as its best IMO. Warm, elegant, voluptuous. Even though, it’s still very hot in Austin, that’s my SOTD.
    Have a lovely vetiver day.

    1) Am in Infusion de Vetiver by Prada, from my mini collection. Perfect for today- it is not going to be as hot (indeed, rain is predicted for Sunday) but it is very muggy and smoky still, and the airy, slightly green, slightly rooted and spicy quality is perfect for such a day.

    2) Wallet alert: There are these scented soaps at Fumerie in PDX:

Wow, everyone is going strong today, I have a lot of reading here to catch up on and it’s not even noon yet!
I was so excited by my Le Labo cities exclusive purchase yesterday that I had to try some of them this morning. I checked and found that yes indeed, two of them have vetiver as a note, so I have Limette 37 on my left hand and Musc 25 on my right. Limette went on deliciously and was so bursting with citrus but now it has become gentle and I definitely can detect the vetiver in it. However it is less interesting to me now. On the other hand, the Musc 25 has improved and I am really enjoying it. It’s not at all overwhelming but definitely a beautiful blend with the musk and lily of the valley as a really beautiful soft note.
But neither of these comes close to Mousse de Chene, an absolutely phenomenal perfume, one I might even have to invest in when available in September, despite the horrific price point!

Interesting. I was in New Orleans and stayed at the Ponchartrain hotel a couple of weeks ago. I was thrilled to see that they had the Labo Santal 33 in the bathroom : body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, all in 40ml/1.4oz. As expected it doesn’t smell as sandalwood to me, at least not the divine oil from Mysore. Instead, it’s a nice mixe of woody and smoky notes of, I would say, vetiver and oak moss. Smells great and a real surprise in a hotel bathroom !!!

YES! Finally on vacation! Waiting for departure. We are not planning any activities for the day, so I can rest and feel better. Wearing TDC Sel de Vetiver which I always enjoy for the beachy vibe. Happy Friday!

SotD = Onda EdP from a spray sample

Vetiver plus gently spicy fruit and honey. Delicious, rounded, and smooth, I will wear this again.

I’ve learned much from everyone’s scent choices this week. Guerlain Vetiver is on my list for the next time I pass by a perfume counter.

Vetiver, also immortelle, for me they feel more like ambient place scents than perfume notes to wear. Both are tied to childhood memories of trips to dusty flea markets and second-hand furniture stores with my mum.

I would love to have vetiver scented window shades, that’s such a pretty picture up top today.

Hope everyone has a happy fragrant day.

Ha! Thank you for the explanation. I knew something looked familiar, and I love the color.

It must be the older Vetiver bottle that has the frosted stripes and the new one is tall and narrow.

I’m not wearing vetiver today. I think of that note in cooler weather, plus my plan for August is to wear nothing but beach scents as I’m not going on any vacation but in my head and my nose. Today I’m wearing Replica’s Beach Walk.

I think I was put off vetiver as a note early on in my perfumistahood when I put on way too much Turtle Vetiver Back and ran screaming to the sink. (That’s an exaggeration, but not by much.) However, I like vetiver in a blend, like D600, Reglisse Noire, and Aedes de Venustas. As the starring note, I have found that I like Mazzolari Vetiver enough to No Fumerie sample. I put more on today than the last time I wore it and I’m getting a little of the bitterness I associate with vetiver. Not enough to scrub, thankfully, and the drydown does become very pretty.

I finally laid hands on my sample of KM Vetiver Velours, and it wears as the name implies – a kinder, gentler vetiver. :) I’m not finding much complexity, however; it’s faded to just powdery vetiver. Will be switching to the Lubin and keeping foxbins company!

    Fri-yay!

My experience so far suggests I’m not really a vetiver person, so for today’s project I’m in Guerlain Chant d’Arômes, where the vetiver is a supporting actor. Besides, it’s a lovely scent for warm weather. Win-win.

Have an excellent weekend, all you fab NSTers!

I chose Kenzo Air, which is lovely but a little too light and airy (see what I did there) for a work day when I can’t reapply. It’s definitely a summer vetiver since it’s not cloying or heavy. I’m a bit bummed out that I can already barely smell it, and I won’t be home to put something else on for at least 6 more hours!

Ooh forgot about the rosemary essential oil on my desk. That will come in handy when I need a boost today.

Saturday, and I’m re-trying J’ai Ose, which I loathed at first but am definitely warming to as I get to know it better. I don’t adore it yet, but who knows where love will go?

Had an odd conversation with my new boss: she asked me why I feel the need to buy something every day. I thought that was an almost unclassifiably impertinent question: I don’t buy something every day, but if I did, it would be no one’s business but mine and the dear man’s. Then she asked me for the name of a hair dresser, and obviously I gave her my hairdresser’s name and phone, so she asked me how much a cut costs, and when I told her ($90, which may be expensive for all I know; I don’t care), she criticised me for spending that much on a hair cut. This was in public. I deflected the topic as much as I could, but I felt unsettled by such a very, very personal discussion. I’m perfectly sure that my mother would have delivered a stinging snub, but I’m not ready to do that yet–I have too many loose ends to tie up for my programme, and staff to settle, before I swing into battle, especially a personal one like that. But….what, exactly, was that about?

Housework now. Kitten chaos everywhere! Oh, and you know what? In fact, J’ai Ose is just right for today. It’s really quite pretty! Be well, everyone.

I guess she was trying in a very ham-fisted and rude way to establish herself as your boss. Dogs do that in a much more obvious way, they try and pee as I high up on the tree/pole or whatever to let everyone know who’s boss.
I’m glad you are enjoying your perfume, bosses tend to be a nuisance anyway.

Yep, there was an element of look-who’s-got-the-power in the conversation, but I’m not sure why she would bother. I was on her appointing committee, so she knows I favoured choosing her, and besides that, I’m leaving at the end of this year. It’s all very odd.

But her behaviour is not rational so you’ll never understand it if you rationalise it. I agree with Kanuka below, possibly insecure and just hitting at anything that she thinks might be in her way. People are odd.

A friend of mine is very good at dealing with that particular behaviour, she just starts asking questions: why do you want to know? Do you want to change hairdressers? Stuff like that. I’m not very good at that myself, so I mostly just keep my mouth shut if people are impertinent.

Are you looking forward to quitting work?

I call those sorts of people “velvet-gloved bullies” (yes, I know “passive aggressive” is another name for it!). Oish. When it comes to purchases and money questions like that, I have learned to lie. Haircut? oh I cannot recall. Maybe $25–hmmm no it must be more. . . not sure. My father and his wife are frequently very curious about how much I’ve spent on something (ironically it is frequently dinner for them. . .) I have learned to wildly under report and that usually solves the problem. The new cover for the BBQ? Oh I can’t remember. Maybe $15? The hand soap? I think it was $3.

I love your hair! It would be worth every penny if it were twice that price.

I was uncomfortable. I would have been slightly iffy about that even with a friend, but with my boss, in the middle of the admin office, it was definitely disconcerting. I wonder if was her intention to make me feel off-kilter? Again, though, why? I’m actually a unit that runs trouble-free: I do my job, I’m efficient, I don’t make demands or waves, and above all, I’m not a permanent fixture.

yes, don’t let her shame you; it is absolutely none of her beeswax. and I HATE that! I’ve had people do that to me too with the hair thing, and now I learned to just tell them the name of the salon, and if they ask the price I just say that it depends on the stylist you choose. If they keep on I just continue to be vague, I figure they can find out the price on their own if they even bother to look further into it. What gets me is they compliment you, and then criticize you for the very thing they profess to admire…

and obviously, your hair must be fabulous! :)

I can empathize with the awkward conversation. She has no business asking such questions! My friend’s ex boss would say similar things to her, often questioning why she would purchase things. As it turned out, the boss was in dire financial straits, and as we figured it, she wanted to make someone else feel bad about their financial decisions, instead of looking at herself. Hopefully for the next six months, the conversations will be strictly business.

No vetiver for me today. Went to a funeral mass this morning for a colleague’s mother, so I wore JM English Pear & Freesia which seemed appropriate. A colleague who kindly gave me a ride took an accidental detour on the way back and we ended up in NJ instead of back down to Manhattan so my work day started very late and I had to play catch up. Looking forward to a relaxing evening and a visit from my father and his new-ish girlfriend who I’ll be meeting for the first time this weekend.

Instead, I’m wearing Berdoues Assam of India, which I LOVE and need to buy the FB ASAP considering my sample is almost empty. I have it in my Sephora shopping cart and my trigger finger is getting seriously itchy.

On another note, has anyone tried either of the new E&J Nirvanas yet? I was at the mall last weekend and didn’t see it anywhere. I’m hoping they release a new mini roller ball pack with all six in the series because I want to try them, but don’t want to commit to a full-size, even in just a normal roller ball. :)

I posted earlier this week that I had tried the Amethyst. It was very nice, spicy with tobacco. Unfortunately on me longevity was a big zero. Wait for the Christmas sets to start coming out, I’m sure they will put out some type of coffret.

Good to know! The few reviews I’ve seen for Amethyst have compared it both favorably and otherwise to Bourbon (which I wasn’t wild about, but I loved Rose.) I’ll be curious to see whether they push the layer-ability of the new ones like they’ve done with the last two sets.

    SOTD = Carner Barcelona D600

Fantastic. Someone (IIRC Oakland Fresca, I think) mentioned that D600 was not on her radar because of the name. I agree. Every time I see D600, my brain processes it as WD-40 and while I have never smelled WD-40 (for real, I am not a DIY gal), I imagine it smelling unpleasantly oily and tarry. I smelled this at Twisted Lily and decided I must have it.

The highlight of my weekend is a meetup with cazaubon! Exciting times ahead!

    Commuting Woes No. 377:

I’m a creature of habit. I used to sit in the first car of NJ Transit trains in the morning because it is the quiet car. After one too many train crashes where the lead car was smashed, I resolved to never sit in one regardless of the type of train and regardless of its convenience to the exit on a platform.

Since my office moved to just outside of NYC and I now also take the PATH train, I have a specific spot on the platform where I know a set of doors will open when the next empty train comes. Well, as you can imagine, there are other creatures of habit so day in and day out, I see a similar set of 8-10 people going into the same train car. Two of them have an ongoing dialogue about sports figures. Unfortunately for the rest of us, one of them is hearing impaired so both of them always end up speaking at the top of their lungs while the train is on the platform AND, if the conversation is not over by the time the train leaves the station, the volume goes up 10 notches because they have to try to speak above the noise of the train. I suppose I could switch cars but that would mean having to get used to a different “perfect” spot!

I really must unearth my sample of D600–hope it hasn’t evaporated!–and try it again. My notes from 2013 indicate that I liked it…

WD-40 is like patent medicine for my house. I use it on everything. :) It does smell oily, but not tarry.

You and Cazaubon will have a grand time this weekend! Photos, please?

You smell great! Thanks for introducing me to that one! I wore it twice this week and like it more each time I wear it.

Good evening – I wasn’t really super sure if I liked vetiver or not. So after a bit a researching I discovered I did have samples of at least two fairly common vetivers, the ELO Fat Electrician, and Byredo’s Bal d’ Afrique. Since I hadn’t tried the ELO, I went with it. It was nice, but didn’t grab me. After it wore off – 3 hrs or so – it was just a sample, so I was dabbing – that never seems to last long for me… I then went with the Byredo, I had worn it before and knew I liked it – or at least I liked most of it – the final dry down a few hours in sometimes doesn’t agree with me. Someone mentioned in an earlier post that they put this one on their legs as it tended to sometimes be a bit much – Elizabeth maybe – and I thought that a rather ingenious idea. But thanks to you guys for this project, I realize that I do like vetiver in subdued form – I find it comforting.

I enjoy Bal d’ Afrique. It had to grow on me though. I am anxious to try Fat Electrician. It’s mentioned here a good bit!

I went with The Different Company Sel de Vetiver, and I suspect I had company. I like it, but haven’t been using up my decant very fast. It’s very rooty, and the salt/iodine component is there as advertised. The things I’ve been wearing for the last few days (Etro Shaal Nur, Lorenzo Villoresi Yerbamate) have vetiver in their bases, but it would be a stretch to call them vetiver perfumes. Looking forward to coming back tomorrow to read about everyone else’s picks.

I wore Commodity’s new Orris. Per Fragrantica: Top: Carrot Seed Orpur, Pink Peppercorn, Italian Bergamot, Coriander Seed. Mid Notes: White Lily of the Valley, Tea Blossom, Patchouli Oil, Moroccan Cedarwood. Base Notes: Italian Orris, Vetiver Oil, Vanilla Madagascar Orpur. The vetiver note comes through very clearly! I really like this fragrance, based on the sample I have. It comes in a 10 ml size, which is tempting.
