Friday scent of the day 6/23

Posted by Robin on 23 June 2017 341 Comments

kumquats

The first Friday of summer! Our community project for today: wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing good old Parfum d’Empire Azemour Les Orangers, from my own Top 10 of Summer 2012 list.

Reminder: 6/30 will be Bottle Porn Friday...wear a fragrance that you bought because you were drawn to the aesthetics of the bottle, or just wear a fragrance from a bottle you think is perfect. Suggested by chocolatemarzipan8.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am in Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine, another summer favorite. If I have to choose my number one summer perfume that would be Chanel No.19 EdT. Always perfect. Happy Friday everyone!

I have a travel size bottle of Orange Sanguine that I really enjoy. It layers nicely with anything else citrus, too.
No. 19 edt is one of my very favorite perfumes ever and you’re so right, it’s perfect for summer although I wear it all year :)

No. 19 in all versions is wonderful in all seasons. I usually wear the EDP and 19 Poudre for colder days and the EDT in summer.

Not that you need more 19 options (or maybe you do ;) ) but I just bought a (vintage) bottle of the spray cologne for summer. It’s greener and crisper than the edt (which I also love.)

Oh, that is a temptation! I think I will need to give a try to the vintage. I always succumb to 19! My weakness!

You are early today, Robin, and I love your scent. I’m wearing Foin Fraîchement Coupé, which is both odd and great in summer, plus it smells of summer, if that makes sense.

I love thinking that I smell like La Moisson, my favourite Van Gogh. I bought this one blind after receiving 8 samples from Oriza L.Legrand that didn’t include Foin. No regrets. It’s slightly weird and utterly wonderful, wearable and comforting. Like the smell of real hay.

I’m vacationing this week on the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Wearing AG Vetiver Cologne at the moment, but I’ll be swimming in the ocean soon this morning so my scent will be salt water (definitely a summer favorite).

The pool in our apartment complex is a heated saltwater pool, and every time I accidentally inhale or snort some, I’m transported to splashing around on a beach in HI (the only place I’ve found consistently high water temperatures). Much better than reeking of chlorine–though, as effectively germ-free? I have my doubts.

Ooh, I’m so envious. I’d love to have access to a saltwater pool. I’d be up for the sanitation tradeoff, as the smell isn’t the only downside of chlorine.

The leasing office made a big deal of telling us how good the saltwater would be for our skin and hair. No evidence of that so far, but at least it’s not as awful for my hair as chlorine :) I’ll agree with you until I get sick from one of the nasty children.

Ya, apartment pools are always a bit dodgy that way :/ But the hair and skin damage from chlorine are, too. Clearly the solution is to have one’s own saltwater pool. :)

          • Koyel says:
            23 June 2017 at 3:47 pm

As I live in the Bay Area, I won’t be exploring that solution until I am a gazillionaire.

          • kpaint says:
            23 June 2017 at 5:29 pm

As I won’t be a gazillionaire in any city, any time, I’ll only be exploring community pools. Chlorinated and indoors, as that’s all I really have to choose from. *sigh*

Oh, good choice Robin! Tropical depression Cindy is passing over. It’s damp outside, to say the least, and not very summery. Still, I’m wearing my beloved Nuit de Tubereuse. It was released in 2010 and has brightened my summers ever since.

4711 Acqua Colonia Lavender and Thyme, which amps up the green/herbal aspects of lavender. Light and close to the skin but lasts for hours, so it’s perfect for summer.

Same (and good to know I’m not the only one!) I tried wearing it on a summer day as it’s so often mentioned as a warm-weather fave, and it was not a pleasant experience. Same goes for Orange Sanguine, which smells like Christmas to me, and was horribly oppressive in the heat.

Kauai, hands down. My sister lived there for 14 years, and I spent two weeks with her in 2007. I totally unplugged while there; biggest decision each morning was which beach to go to.
The main road does not completely circle the island, which helps with traffic. And it is just gorgeous. Lots of options to hike if you want, snorkel, take a helicopter ride to see Kalalau, or just watch the water. Hope this helps!

Agree. Kauai. Spent most of my honeymoon there and have gone back more than once. My sister lived in Koloa for a year. We have stayed on the north shore (wet side) past Hanalei as well as in Poipu (more touristed, but very family) and up into west shore (dry side) outside Waimea. There is nothing like sitting in the water in Hanalei Bay and just drinking in the scenery. Agree the hiking is great. It’s a magical place.

For what you’re looking for – hands down Kauai. A couple of things to keep in mind though: it has much more rain than other islands; you’ll need something from mosquitos and look for a nice beach close to where you plan to stay because Kauai has a much rougher water, you can’t easily swim everywhere if waves are slightly stronger. But a very beautiful island. And great fruit and fish. Be sure to find farmers market time and places.

    SOTD is .vero.profumo “Rubj EdP”.

    Top: bergamot, mandarin, passionfruit and neroli;
    Mid: orange flower, tuberose, basil and cumin;
    Base: cedar, musk and oakmoss.

I’m not fond of neroli, nor of orange flower, nor of this perfume. Harrumph. ;^)

Yes, it’s very JM style, and it’s a good candidate for ‘sports scent’ challenge in a few week.
And I accidentally found that it layers nicely with BOIS 1920 Sandalo e The (though BOIS definitely dominates). I went out to get my latest order of decants and as I was unpacking it I found out that the lid of the complimentary sample of Sandalo e The did not close properly – by spilling it (mostly over myself, fortunately)! It was a tiny ‘one application’ sample, so I drained the vial. The resulting combination is spicy, salty, woody and subtly herbal. Very nice for walking in the rain on a moderately warm summer day (like today). (Would probably be too spicy on a hot and dry day.) My only criticism is that SeT seems to have too much caraway for my liking.

The Shalimar for people who don’t like Shalimar.
White musk, tonka beans, orange blossoms, vaguely lemony citrus.
I don’t hate it, but i will avoid it the next time it tries to chitchat at a cocktail party. Yawn……

There is iris in both, the Dior Homme has some cocoa, the Guerlain, orange blossoms.
        Both are somewhat powdery.
I like both, just not love.
It is very humid today, so SPI is an easy scent for the weather.

Azemour has really grown on me – one of those that I gave several second chances to because you all loved it so much, and now I love it too.

I’m in Diorella! Which the first time I smelled I was like oh daaaaaang I’m gonna wear this all summer, and lo I did.

I debated a dozen choices this AM, and then went for Aromatics Elixir. I am a big pile of sparkling herbal oakmoss, and I love it.

Doggy Update – I looked over at the couch last night to see the “Foster with intent” dog sprawled out on the sofa, all 4 paws in the air reaching out to touch Ollie ( in my Gravatar).
My heart gave a little thump.

        Both, ha!

I love the romance of the dining car and lounge, I love the pace and the price.

If you go, I would bring extra blankets to cushion the seat/bed. I understand the sleeper cars are not necessarily worth the expense. And, maybe a sheet you can use as a privacy screen. I don’t think the extra $50 to get your car 1st is worth it either.

It is great having your own car!

I waffled among Azemour, Mediterraneo, 19 and Eau des Merveilles this morning, but in the end my hand reached for AdP Iris Nobile EDT. So beautifully refreshing! I also have a little osmanthus note wafting around me, from the shirt that doubles as my “bathrobe” on hot mornings – for some reason osmanthus lingers longest in my wardrobe. Hm. Anyway, tomorrow it’s supposed to get close to 100 degrees here, and THAT’S when I’m breaking out the Mediterraneo. And respraying. A lot. :)

Well, Elisa P settled it for me this morning with the subject of Hawaii. Bronze Goddess with Plumeria Flower Water (from Kauai) sprayed on top. I’m not just any beach. I’m a beach in Hawaii.

Some cleaning to do, then shower to head to the goddaughter’s HS graduation and dinner celebration after. The graduation is at the Barclay Center. I was warned by the mom to bring a book. Will decide between OJ Frangipani and Seville a L’Aube. The OJ has become one of my top go-to summers.

It smells like the whole thing, leaf, stem, fruit. The initial blast is very whole tomato plant. It calms down quickly to just the tomato leaf. Today I must not have applied enough, because the drydown scent is mostly absent. Remember that Demeters are colognes, so often more needs to be applied.

I’m not on theme today because I wanted to play with my new oils. So I’m wearing al-Rehab Balkis today. It kind of reminds me of Givenchy Pi, but there is a note in Pi that always reads a little off to me and Balkis doesn’t have whatever that is.

SOTD Bronze Goddess Body Butter (lotion?) straight outa the fridge, ’cause it’s summer and I’m back in the sweltering swamp.

Got home Wednesday after driving 14 hours only to discover someone had tried to break in, and as a result, I couldn’t unlock my door to get in the house. Had to call a locksmith to pop off my knob (we won’t talk about what that cost!), then finally got in and surprise! the city never turned my water back on. When I calls them the next day, a little hot under the collar (literally), they informed me they did turn on the water, but then turned it back off because the front spigot had been turned on. Me: “Why didn’t they just turn the spigot off?” Them: “We don’t do that.” Seriously, that’s what she said! Grrrr!

Anywho, now back to almost “normal.”‘ Spent the morning bushwhacking my back yard, which was a sand pile when I left, but now is a verdant green thicket of booty high brush, marsh grasses, and swamp flowers. Only got about half done before I ran out of gas. There’s always tomorrow!

So happy to be back with all my perfumes I left behind! After the water was turned on yesterday, I had a long and luxurious shower followed by a few lifting spritzes of Corsica Fusriosa! Ahhh. I won’t be leaving this behind again????

I was thinking of you all week, your three 12 hour shifts and then trip home. Sorry about the attempted break in, not a very pleasant welcome home. I’m dying to hear about the inflatable kayak you’ve ordered….please send details so I can look it up. Is it a model that you can carry as a backpack? They are increasingly popular here for back country rivers.

About the attempted break in- they didn’t get in, so it’s all good. However, if they had gotten in, they would have been severely disappointed as I have nothing of value-no electronics, no jewelry, or any of the other things that have street value. Just one huge old Tibetan chest that I treasure.

I’m selling the kayak because it’s just too difficult to travel with and/or keep safe and would require a very expensive roof rack. I ordered the inflatable SUP seen here…

        https://irockersup.com/product/new-irocker-1032-10-long-x-32-wide-inflatable-sup-package/

Great 2 year warranty and more portable than the kayak. I will be able to fit/store it under the bed in my van. It’s very wide for stability. I may even get into SUP yoga! Planning on testing it out with T-Rex next week. The water here is already uncomfortably warm. My next contract in July is in an area with a lot of lakes and rivers, which I prefer over ocean/salt water, cause no sharks!

Oh my; that sounds like a lot of unpleasantness. Break-ins can make you feel so violated!

BG body cream is so nice in the blazing heat. Last year in the summer I think it was me being complimented while out grocery shopping; I had the body cream, body splash and perfume on. Someone commented “oh, someone smells so good”; my hubby and I just walked by and he doesn’t wear any fragrance stuff.

Glad everything worked out for you.

I’m on a celbrescent kick lately I guess so today is Eau de Gaga. I snagged this for $9.99 at my local Marshall’s and it’s a great summer perfume–lime, green tea, and violet. Very light, very low sillage, but I have an important meeting today with someone I haven’t met before so I didn’t want a big fragrance.

    Happy Friday!

I love the Eau de Gaga ! The lotion and shower gel are good too if you happen on them or a gift set. It reminds me a bit of earl grey tea and pepper ( MJ Bang?) with a bit of lemon. If you are hunting it at the discounters do check the men’s fragrance area too I found my giftset on the guys side . This definitely works as a unisex scent.

Portland is having a heat wave and summer events are underway. Portland’s World Naked Bike Ride is tomorrow night. Last year there were 10,000 participants and I was stopped at an intersection as they went by–it’s quite a sight, lots of leis and body paint. Sunday is the Milk Carton Boat Race, where participants make boats out of waxed milk cartons and try to stay afloat as they paddle across a pond. Both days it will be hot and I’ll be wearing summer favorites. Today, with a high getting in the 90s I’m wearing Assam of India, a new love I’ve only worn once before when it was cooler.

This morning I was pondering my lack of summer favorite scents and then I realized it is because here in Houston we have about 9 months of summer! Summer is just our way of life and we live in the a/c all the time and so I run the usual gamut without a lot of attention to the outdoor weather. But in the spirit of the community project I looked in my perfume cabinet and came up with a travel size of Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte which is doing me nicely thank you!

The kittens all came through their neuter/spay surgery fine yesterday! I was told to keep the boys and girls separately for “two to three days” so the boys wouldn’t play too much and bother the girls while they still have sore bellies. Well, that did not last! They all cried at being separate and this morning they are all running around like nothing happened. I’m hoping this is OK but didn’t have the heart to keep the girls locked up in the bathroom.

Tried out a new sample that ended up smelling like shampoo mixed with cleaning product. I wish I could remember its name so I’d know to avoid it. Luckily, Dame Verbena, Freesia, and Musk is still in my purse from a few days ago, so now I smell sparkly and beachy–with a bit of bubblegum in there that I don’t recall from before, hmm.

All this talk of Orange Sanguine makes me (a) want a travel spray of that and (b) wish I had played more with my new JMs from the freebiemeet. Those deserved a seat during this week of summer tops. None of their scents really stand in my top 10 individually, but as a whole, the house is definitely one of the best for summer.

Morning, all. Sleepy Saturday here. I haven’t quite adjusted back to local time: I’m falling deeply asleep far too early and coming fully awake at silly times. Today I shall potter about removing the fiine haze of Dakkie fur that seems to cover every surface of our house, and then let myself have a little snooze this afternoon…heaven.

So, to perfume: I’m wearing Tauerville Vanilla Flash at the moment. I bought it for our cat sitter, but in an email exchange discovered that she was hankering for a certain Chanel eyeshadow arrangement, so I bought that for her and kept the VF. I have to say, I think I came off better than she did. I was deeply suspicious of it at first, but now I really Iike it. This cold weather helps with the liking (14 is the high today), but I think the best thing is that VF isn’t a foodie vanilla at all: in fact, it’s a rather dry vanilla. The sweetness seems to derive from wood and a waft of incense, and there’s a fleeting hint of leather. Nice!

I’ve sort of settled back in to work, but I feel as though I’m in two halves, or perhaps a two-thirds/one third division. The larger, rather dull part is seeing and engaging with necessary tasks, and the other, smaller part is madly subversive, restless, impatient with nonsense, and mentally still on holiday. Perhaps it’s a function of delayed jet lag.

    Be well, all.

The dogs got me up at 1 am as it was clearly morning in dog hours, and time for breakfast and a walk . They went back to sleep after a snack . I didn’t so I did a waterdragon and pootled around and sprayed some Galop.
Now it is breakfast time. Yay! Mid winter carnival and lantern festival here today. Every drum in the city will be banging, and all the stilt walkers will be having their day in the dark. Best thing about midwinter is all this can take place at 5.30 so I can be home with a glass of wine by 8! Myrrh ardente. What a fabulous perfume. I think Waterdragon is trying to convert me to becoming a proper perfumista…the rain in spain and all that.

Today hasn’t been fun – I spent 8 hours painting ironwork in 90+ degree temperatures. My dream for our next home is a high rise apartment! I was shocked that the Mojave Ghost I spritzed this morning before painting lasted all day. After a shower, I put on my favorite summer perfume, Philosykos. Love love love it.

    Happy weekend/ almost weekend!

The weather here is cooperating with today’s theme, as am I. (ish) Had a lovely couple of morning drenchings of Cristalle Eau Verte, a summer favorite.

I’ve lately had a burning desire to re-try the Merveilles(es?) what with the love they get here year-round, but particularly in summer, it seems. They’re what led me to the rabbit hole (along with the Jardins) but after a bad experience with one (which one, I don’t know as I cannot keep them straight) it put me off them.

I’m about to buy some samples of all but L’Ambre, which I had a tiny bit of in a vial that I pulled out this winter and have been meaning to wear since. My arms are now drenched in it, and I’m ready to try the others.

Oh, and I ended up wearing Dita von Teese to the Broadway tour of Cabaret last night. If you’re a fan of musical theater and have never seen this, I highly recommend it if it comes to your neck of the woods. Absolutely stellar, stunning, beguiling, not enough adjectives. A piece of theater like nothing I’ve seen before, and I’d love to go again tonight, tomorrow, and through the rest of the run.

Dita! Of course! I should have thought of that. Glad you enjoyed the show. It’s one I can (and will) see over and over again. Same with the film. Liza is a tough act to follow.

I still haven’t seen Hamilton. Waiting til some tickets trickle down to discounters, which will probably happen in 5 years.

The lead playing Sally Bowles seemed entirely undaunted by the ghost of Liza, which is always impressive. And, ya, re: Hamilton, I was going to add “maybe I’ll be able to afford tickets when it tours 5 years from now.”

Is the film version of Cabaret wildly different from the stage musical? I’ve seen it, but it’s probably been 20 years, and my memory of it was only vaguely similar to what I saw last night so it was like a whole new experience.

The DvT opening was really pretty – very soft rose, sandalwood & a touch of incense. But then the rose turned on me a bit, as it is wont to do. It amplified and soured, but wasn’t unpleasant. I went with my mom, who said I smelled like baby powder, so clearly our noses were having 2 different experiences!

Thanks for letting me try it! Money saved, as I’ve been *this close* to buying a FB for years. In the end, it struck me as a nice rose but similar to lots of others – probably because I couldn’t really smell any of the other notes going on.

The film has more added to it-some side stories. Also Sally is the American and he’s the Brit. I actually prefer the movie version, possibly because I saw it before the play. But also Liza and Joel Grey are both fantastic. I own the DVD and probably watch it once a year. Interestingly, I read the story in Christopher Isherwood’s “Berlin Stories” on which it is based and it’s the shortest story in the book-like only a couple of pages. Not sure who took that little snippet and built a whole story around it. I highly recommend the film.
And glad I saved you a blind buy fail! I get mostly rose but it has a retro, almost cosmetic vibe to me. Not powdery, though.

Summer is my least favorite perfume season. We get three months of high heat and humidity here in the DC area, which means heavy sun screen, heat rash, eczema, sweat, and general annoyance. I soon give up on perfume. But I did buy and enjoy AG Ninfeo Mio last year. Also, it’s the only time of the year that Prada Infusion d’Iris does not bore me to irritation

This morning I wore Ophelia, by Heeley. Its a nice, polite white flower scent that us safe for office. But everytime i smell it i am reminded of the fact that i actually need my white flowers dirtier and a bit louder.

Oh well, it brings a bit of a romantic spring feel to the office and to myself (dressed in black trousers, black blazer).

I saw Alien Covenant, and though it brings nothing fresh to the table and the script was predictable, it was very entertaining and I loved the art direction.

Oh this was not in my top 10 summer scents by the way. I dont even think I am able to name a top 10 like that. I wear lots of scents year round.

When it gets warmer I do wear more Hermès to work though (a few jardins, EdM), but at home/in evening I still wear white flowers and orientals.

But i could use a few more green scents or colognes in my collection…a little more choice for daytime wear is never a bad idea. ;)

SotD = Eau des Merveilles because it’s summer and it’s Friday and sometimes I can’t help myself.

EdM makes me smile every time. Sometimes I spritz and take a big breath and think of Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma as I am filled with emotion. Other times Merveilles is Satie’s 3 Gymnopédies, oddly calm, eerily familiar, profoundly comforting.

Though I love it year round, in warm weather EdM is sun, salt, water, and sand, magic and memory in a bottle.

Happy summer to all, let’s make it fragrant. :)

Applied You or Someone Like You this AM and it is now gone baby gone. Will reapply, but wish it had more lasting power. When my sample runs out, I think I won’t miss it too much, except for the first bit of mintiness… which I really like… fun and unexpected… oh dear…

Update for those following my trials and tribulations regarding my son’s most recent health challenge: Have been up to high doh about that second test we ran last week at the hospital with my son. The results came back completely wacky and I immediately called his doctor–but she was out of town for a few days. The lab has apologized for the “labeling switch,” but they tossed out the samples the day after I called the hospital. So it looks like my son has another trip to the day hospital to do the whole thing all over again. I am working on getting the hospital to pay for it, of course. This is supposed to be a world class pediatric hospital!! Ostensibly.

Hello hello…SOTD = FM Carnal Flower Hair Mist

3 sprays = incredible lasting power

I stopped by the St. Ives pop-up bar. Nice space but eh, the only things you an customize are facial scrub and body lotion. I wanted to get a tiny sample of the body lotion to do a patch test but they do not do that. Instead, I got a 3 oz bottle of Oatmeal & Shea Butter Body Wash so I left happy.

I then stopped by Sephora and got a sample of Atelier California Clementine.

Since I was close enough to OsswaldNYC, I decided to stop by. Josie was there and showed me a bunch of Montales, SHL 777, a new line that I was too lazy to write down, Memo and Amouage. I had forgotten how expensive the Amouages are as I got my one and only FB (Sunshine Woman) heavily discounted online! That said, Bracken Woman is really great and, badabing, I got a sample! I also smelled the newest – Cherry Blossom (I think) – and meh, it smelled like bad breath.

    Overall, not a bad outing!

In a What Was She Thinking episode – I can’t unsee so I have to share to get it out of my system —
a tall, reasonably attractive pear-shaped woman must have gotten her fashionista sense mixed up! She wore a black body-hugging all black knit top, a skirt with alternating horizontal wide black and white stripes (think Sephora) and mustard yellow tights.

Great outing! I like Bracken Woman too. I don’t know how long it takes the Amouages after release to get to discounters. Osswald occasionally has celebration promotions- it would be a good time to split Braken if you find you ” need it” ;-) .

Sunshine got there pretty quickly. I’ll watch out for the promotions!

For real, I wore pretty much that exact outfit on the regular when I was about 19 ;)

Looks like we are going from floods to extreme heat in the next couple days. Yikes!

Wearing CB At The Beach 1966; this reminds me of the old-school Coppertone. I can almost see my sister and I in the backyard trying to out-tan each other back when we were young teens!

Stay cool and fragrant this weekend everyone.
