Friday scent of the day 3/17

Posted by Robin on 17 March 2017 279 Comments

St Patrick's Day Rainbow

Happy Friday, and Happy Saint Patrick's Day! (It's also World Sleep Day. Do get some sleep.) Our community project for today: wear a perfume by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

My pick: Donna Karan Black Cashmere, which has made a good showing here over the past week. Bet I have more twins today!

Reminder: on 3/24, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

‘Tis me! Lady Pirate Lovestosmellgood, hidin’ in the shamrocks and wishin’ ye a Briny Good St. Patrick’s Day this Friday! Arrrr!

Planned to wear Fluer de Chine but I can still smell Encens Mythique on me from last night. Anyone else get that lasting power?

Yes- it’s so perfect for nighttime. Even MPN lasts on me, thankfully.

World Sleep Day–wonderful! Thought I’d be unable to participate, but lo & behold, my cabinet has yielded a travel spray of Fleur09. Good thing I’m in for the morning, as I find the first hour to be quite heady. Really need to put more frags through some sort of scheduled rotation.

In honor of St Paddy’s Day, have retrieved The Complete Them, 1964-1967–quite enjoyable. Have been listening to The Loft lately on Sirius, which is where I became more aware of their body of work. There are many fantastic covers of Gloria, but this one ROCKS.

Happy Friday! Wearing Donna Karan Gold EdP, drinking coffee and going crazy with some girl scouts tagalongs cookies. Very sweet start of the day with no hopes to get some decent sleep to celebrate the day. But anyway, life is beautiful!

OEILLET BENGALE it is today, (had to cut and paste to make sure it is spelled correctly). I come from the CA coast where a lot of flowers are grown for the country. It reminds me of my neighbors carnations along our fence. They seemed as common as freeway ice plant to us, but I know they are considered nice elsewhere. All in all, a nice one to sample.

I posted this late yesterday so will post again today: Because Robin mentioned this scent yesterday, I stopped at our local perfume destination store and sampled it, and did really like it. (I have to say though that the top on that bottle is a pain). They had two FB’s there marked 30% off of the $245 price (must be discontinuing the line0. I am sure they would ship (and I have no affiliation)–and if you are not from here you would not have to pay our high sales tax of 8 and 1/2%. The store is Kuhl-Linscomb in Houston, I’m sure you can google it.

Happy Friday! Today, I’m in Arquiste Ella, which has surprised me quite a bit. I was sure I didn’t like it when I first opened my sample a month or so ago, but pulling it out this week for the community project, I can’t stop sniffing it. It’s not love at this point, but it feels like one that could really grow on me. I love the community project for helping me step out of my comfort zone in this way.

It does start out smelling a bit like hairspray to me, but then the sharpness fades, and that’s when I want to keep sniffing. In the heat of my shower last night, it made me swoon, but so far today, we’re not there yet.

I’m in Commodity Leather, which I discovered this week is also an RFR scent, worn as it is meant to be: layered under something else. I chose Dame Lily of the Valley, and I am LOVING this combo- it just feels like me.

Mini review: I haven’t been super impressed with Commodity in the past, but this one is so much better than what I’ve tried of the white series. It packs a serious oiled leather from the first wiff and has decent but not overpowering projection. Still only an “pretty good,” because other than being a leather powerhouse it doesn’t do anything interesting- and since I own leathers ranging from Cuir de Russie to 1740 and back again already, I don’t see this as a must-smell let alone a must-buy.

I’m glad to read your review, I’ve been curious about Commodity. Have you tried the Vetiver by any chance? That one looks most tempting to me for some reason.

If I may add my 2 cents: I took home a sample of the vetiver. It’s a pretty mild, light weight vetiver, not much else, and I like it and am (still)not a vetiver lover. I think if you like stronger, more complex vetiver, this one will be disappointing.

And, by the way, today is my birthday. It’s afternoon here, so I’ve already had some sparkling wine, a festive lunch and have just finished my coffee with eclairs. And after snow and rain yesterday, today we we’ve had some sun (and clouds too) and a warmer weather. Nice day!

I’m a little ashamed to admit Clinique Happy was the only choice I had from that long list of choices. I seem to have a growing collection of the minis that come with the bonus.
The birds are singing and it’s St. Patrick’s Day, so it’s a somewhat appropriate choice.
I have the most delicious recipe for Irish Beef Stew that I will make for dinner tonight.

Failed the project, now smelling pretty in Diptyque Do Son. My office mate walked in and said, Oh, something smells so good! What is that?” For gardenias I actually prefer Creed Gardenia, but the difference in $$$ makes Do Son my go to gardenia fragrance at the moment….Happy St. Paddy’s Day for those who celebrate. Have some corned beef and cabbage or lamb stew for lunch. :-)

Really similar to Nifeo Mio! Wore the two side by side the other day and though the Goutal is fuller and rounder, it’s like the same song in different versions, a studio recorded, very sharp one and that live version that’s a bit messy and shorter but totally satisfying.

I was going to wear Donna Karan Essence Collection Labdanum, but while rummaging through a decant drawer looking for it, I came across so many things I’d forgotten all about and ended up with CBIHP Frankincense. When that wears off, I’ll probably wear the Aftelier Bergamoss EdP that I’d been looking for on International Women’s Day. :)

I’m noticing that Rodrigo Flores-Roux did all those John Varvatos Artisan fragrances that have good reviews. Perhaps instead of wearing one of his fragrances today I’ll try to rustle up Artisan samples as part of my men’s fragrance quest.

A question (if you don’t mind) – Are you looking for yourself or a guy? I ask because in testing for Laurie with guys testing the same fragrances, we found that guys always wanted fragrances to be sweeter. Their skin seems to eat sweet (mine amps it). Kind of makes sense if you think about it. TIA :-)

For actual guys, yes. That’s an amazing observation. I would have thought the opposite because sweetness is one of the characteristics that make fragrances feminine to me. Perhaps that’s why Habit Rouge works for at least some guys.

Happy St Patrick’s day to all! I had to bust out the Chergui because it’s officially chilly in the hood today! Also wearing a funnel neck sweat shirt while working in the sun, which is unheard of.

More van planning and work today, but I am DYING for a good stir fry and planning on making it myself. It could turn our fantastic or completely inedible. I’m off to the grocery store to load up and veggies and chicken.

Also, I did get a chance to try the new JM Myrrh and Tonka the other day. Quite happy I didn’t succumb to my blind buy instincts! It started out nice, but like all JM’s, it dried down the generic screechy musk. No matter which iteration I try, they all dry down the SAME!! (at least on me. It may smell fab on others. Please don’t hate me, JM Fans!)

Cheers all and have a Stupendously Fabulous Weekend! *Insert pint here* =)

Aspects of the JM myrrh and tonka keeps reminding me of Zadig & Voltaire For Him, but the JM is a little fustier in the dry down. Must do a proper comparison as the Z&V is a lot cheaper. Good luck with the stir fry.

Top o’ the morning scent = Trefle Pur. A wonderful NSTer mentioned it earlier this week, and yesterday’s discussion of no-musk masculine-leaning scents reminded me to wear it this morning. Trefle Pur is a great cologne, and no pinching me today because I smell green!

Later today I’ll switch over to La Chasse aux Papillons which to me smells green and yellow. I woke up thinking of it.

Have a great green Friday, NST!

Trefle Pur is a good one. I enjoy it every time I wear it, even though as I sniff my wrist now I think I was wrong when I thought it has no musk. Whoops! I’ll call it low musk.

    Happy Friday!

    1) Am in Jasmin Rouge (from a sample). A lovely, spicy jasmine perfume, just delightful, and is now settling into a very close scent, just like Neroli Portofino, another TF/RFR joint. Incredibly beautiful, but just like Neroli Portofino, quite pricey. I would be happy with the body emulsion.

    2) Now, I just realized why the TF Private Collection differs from the more ‘mainstream’ offerings in terms of skin performance and projection: Black Orchid, Les Noirs, and all the rest are meant to annouce and seduce. The Private Collection, however, is meant for f&%$ing.
No, but seriously- I gave Jasmin Rouge a test run at a dj event, and it settled down into a skin scent. But when I started dancing really hard with some friends, and then really began to swing into it with a guy (who was way too young for me, thanks, and he was wearing plain patchouli oil) here pops JR, spicy and deeply carnally floral and because it was mixed with sweat, freaking sexy.
So! The Private Collection- meant for those times when you KNOW you are gonna get it on.

    3) Am wearing my office cardigan, which is green. Lace blouse, dark jeans, heeled short boots.

Wearing Ella from a sample I actually won (! – I never win anything) in a FB contest at Christmas. I’ve been sitting on it because I feared the hairspray note (Gucci Envy was unwearable on me due to a hairspray note) but I actually like this. I get the hairspray and lots of jasmine, with a 70s/80s feel. Definitely a scent for a night on the town, which I will not get tonight, but I’ll save the rest of sample . . .

I tried Elizabeth Arden White Tea yesterday. It didn’t make much impression and would probably not appeal to the loyal supporters of PAM ( Perfumistas Against Musk) . A bit of a CAT ( Crime Against Tea). Also tried several perfumes from the CDG Leaves series in their great green coloured bottles…Calamus was pretty good. Lily was kind of dirty lily. The town was filled with the usual bunch of St Patrick’s commerce students, all dressed in green and party hopping. Day 2 of Chalayan Airborne then back to Bella Freud 1970.

Hello, all. I am fulfilling yesterday’s Workd Sleep Day– the tiny dose of Amitryp that I take is still giving long black nights, though I now dream vividly, and not always kindly. I really resented Dakkie’s demands this morning. He stood on me –ON ME, forsooth! — and yelled, “Breakfast, now! Now! Or straight to the RSPCA I go, and my mother with me!” Huh! So after my very unmannerly awakening, I need soothing, and I’m wearing, no surprises, Black Cashmere, because of the project and because it’s Black Cashmere and it’s autumn (practically) and it’s beeayootiful!

So. Saturday beckons. At the moment, I’m ignoring the summons of the day. I want to clean the house; I must finish a lecture and write a case study for a class, but other than that, the weekend is mine to go out and play in. Sadly, I can’t think what I might like to do with it. Sleep a little more, maybe?

Be well, everyone. You smell divine!

I’ve used all my samples of Rodrigo Wotsit so I did a week of Dior instead. SOTD is “Eau Sauvage”, vintage (but don’t ask me which). It’s enjoyable and different, so I must remember to look up the notes.

I wore this one today because it was green. Had also picked green cufflinks to wear with a white shirt. But oh, the horror! I tried to put on the shirt this morning and it was too tight. The shame! Thankfully my after work shirt was wearable.

Quite lovely but has nothing in common with vintage Eau Sauvage, which would be clear/pale yellow in color.

I’m dressed all in green, but no one seemed to notice. ???? And I’m only too familiar with your example of “wardrobe malfunction,” lol!

Happy Friday Everyone! Wow! Where did the week go? Spring Break is already coming to an end.
My SOTD is Jasmin Rouge by Tom Ford. I had to drain my bottle today. It will probably be a while before I replace it with another FB, so I will enjoy wearing it. Have a good weekend everyone.

Happy St. Patti’s day those that celebrate!

I’ve pretty much wasted my afternoon away playing with Snapchat — addictive!

SOTD: Rose Geranium Absolute by Panier des Sens… pretty & subtle spicy rose scent

SOTD = sample of John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider, from the stash. It has all the parts of Bvlgari Black I like, minus the headache I got from that one. Unfortunately, longevity wasn’t the greatest for me… Dark Rebel Rider had zoomed off to other places after about 4 hours, which is rather short for my perfume-glue skin.

I failed the project today unless thinking about wearing DK Gold counts!

    SOTD = Mon Precieux Nectar

‘Tis so good I decided to wear it a 2nd day in a row. This morning, I inexplicably overslept by an hour but I got in only 45 minutes later than usual and it was 15 minutes earlier than the next person.

Macy’s has 15% off Beauty and I ended up getting JM Tobacco and Mandarin, Hermes Eau de Merveilles
Parfum and La Mer SPF 50 sunscreen. I may order a few more items and/or ask Nordstrom if they will price-match.

Mon Precieux Nectar, so nice, you wore it twice, will tomorrow be thrice? I’m planning to spend time with that lovely fragrance this evening.

And please do tell! do tell! how you get on with the EdM Parfum. I did not know such a thing existed. 8O

I just might although thinking I may need to give my Aftelier Wild Roses some love.

I also did not know about the EdM Parfum until I perused the Bergdorfs website last weekend! I will report back.

I wish my Macy’s carried Hermes. Ironically I was in mine today picking up some mascara and the SA informed me of the sale. Even Chanel she said, which doesn’t usually go on sale. “Perfume?” I asked. “Yes,” she said. Hmm….tempting.

You could call Macy’s Herarld Square and place an order to get it shipped to you :-). Please email me if you want to get deets (I was trying to be hip with the word and spell check kept changing it! it got changed to “debt pets”) on the SA I worked with.

I did wear Donna Karan Gold (edp), and am in a lovely cloud of fresh, fleshy lily. I know there are supposed to be some amber and clove and other notes in the base, and maybe they add a little warmth, but for me it’s lily all the way down. It coincidentally makes for a nice beginning to my Top 10 of Spring. A lot of my purchases in the last couple of years have been springtime-y florals, because I never wore them before falling down the rabbit hole, so I should have no trouble coming up with 10.

I was also pleasantly surprised to have several choices for today. Usually when the group project is more specific, I find myself scrabbling through samples looking for something to fit the theme. Today I had two FBs and a rollerball to choose from, in addition to several samples. In fact, I wore Arquiste/J.Crew No. 57 for last week’s challenge. Let’s see how long I can keep up my streak of wearing something appropriate for the next week’s challenge as well.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone! (Whoops, maybe shouldn’t have used the exclamation point, in case some of you are reading this Saturday morning, hungover.)
