Marc Jacobs Daisy, Christina Aguilera ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 4 May 2007 17 Comments

Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume adMarc Jacobs Daisy fragrance bottle

Marc Jacobs will launch Daisy, a new fragrance for women, this August. The designer noted that...

...Daisies don't smell, but I wanted to evoke the feeling that you get when you see them — happy and youthful. My gardenia and jasmine scents [Marc Jacobs for women and Blush Marc Jacobs, respectively] are more singular and definitely more ‘designer' scents. I don't want to say they're older, but they're more sophisticated.

The Daisy fragrance, developed by perfumer Alberto Morillas, includes notes of wild strawberry, violet leaves, red grapefruit, gardenia, violet, jasmine, musk, vanilla and white woods.

Marc Jacobs Daisy will be available in 50 and 100 Eau de Toilette and matching body products. (via Women's Wear Daily)

Other recent releases from Marc Jacobs: Splash Cucumber & Splash Orange. Update: Marc Jacobs Daisy is positioned as "the olfactory equivalent of the designer’s secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and therefore more accessible than the signature range." The petals on the bottle are vinyl. (via moodiereport) Update: see a review of Marc Jacobs Daisy.

As previously reported, Christina Aguilera will enter the celebrity fragrance market under arrangements with Procter & Gamble. Her debut scent will be called Christina Aguilera, and will be an "oriental floral with top notes of blackcurrant, a heart of peony and prune and a base of vanilla". Look for it this fall. (via cosmeticnews) Update: read a review of the Christina Aguilera fragrance here.

How ever did you manage to score the ad photo? Google couldn't find it. I'm always interested to compare the ad copy and the ad image, sometimes they say different things. And it's neat to see how the advertiser translate their idea of the consumer's desire into context and subtext, and sometimes, even the medium.

This image is a little disturbing to me, it does not say youthful or joyful. Half-dressed young girl lying in a field in sepia evokes police drama crime scene photos. There's something so pale about the model it says “body”, not “person”. And, who does this, lie around bare skin on grass? It's weird, gives me the itch, and I want to cover her up because I get cold looking at her.

Perfume is a hard thing to sell, it's not easy to describe (sweet, crunchy, made of lacquered wood, etc.) The only thing propeling me to go smell it (minus the excellent review on this forum, of course) is one of these things: reputation of the house, attractiveness of bottle if it's within sight and reach, my relationship to the ad. I think the ad here failed, and given that this is a fragrance yet to be launched, it failed big.

The ad photo is from Women's Wear Daily, and if you want to see a closeup of the bottle, it is on today's front cover. It has huge plastic flowers on it.

Your rant cracked me up — I would guess she is supposed to look young & free, and like someone who is just about to have wild sex in a field, but my thoughts were similar to yours: too cold, too itchy.

But I am way older than the target market — MJ is going for the young ones here, and perhaps it will appeal to them (?)

I actually quite like the ad. I think it looks sweet and natural and innocent. It's mildly sexy, but not trashy or tacky.

It doesn't attract me, but could completely agree that it isn't really trashy or tacky, and certainly not nearly so much so as much fragrance advertising!

Actually daisies DO smell and they smell rather vile.

Have never noticed, but I believe you! Doesn't sound like any daisies were killed in the making of this perfume though 🙂

    Xtina's debut?

She meant to have released two other perfumes; Xpose and Fetish. I've never seen or heard of them though…

Yes, she did, but they were never in widespread distribution — in fact, don't think they appeared in the US at all. So I'm just not counting them (and neither is P&G, apparently) 🙂

Thanks, didn't know Daisy was at Macy's already — though it was still exclusive to Bloomies.

I bought it for my grandma yesterday! It smells sooo freaking good! I also smelled Guerlain's new fragrance with Hilary Swank and Mariah Carey's new one!

I have a sample on the way but still haven't smelled it. Did snag a sample of the My Insolence, and reviewed the M Carey yesterday.

I had a little spritz of 'DAISY' a couple of weeks ago and thought it was lovely! I am now dropping big hints to my boyfriend that I would like to get it for xmas! I usually wear Jo Malone's 'French Lime Blossom' or 'Cabotine' by De Gres, but where as these two are not very overpowering, I think the Daisy might be – but then I work in a Doctors surgery(!) so maybe that's no bad thing!!

I thought the ad – seen for the first time today above -was pretty terrible. A pale girl lying on manky looking grass is an appalling choice in the run up to xmas! The image says cold, manipulated, bored… Her thighs are more prominent than her face too – hardly an ad likely to appeal to women! Had I been on the advertising campaign I'd have gone for a '60s feel – with a 30 yr old Francoise Hardy lookalike in a pseudo retro pose. MUCH better idea!!

It is very nicely done, and yes, not at all overpowering. Good luck — hope the hints work out!
