Tom Ford Black Orchid, Marc Jacobs Autumn Splash, Miller Harris L'Air de Rien & more

Posted by Robin on 28 July 2006 12 Comments

Tom Ford Black Orchid fragranceTom Ford will launch Black Orchid in November. For the fragrance, Ford sought out a recently introduced black orchid "with the barest hint of aubergine":

Using headspace technology...[the] team captured the black orchid's essence and replicated it molecularly. The fragrance, by Givaudan, has top notes of French jasmine, black gardenia, ylang ylang, bergamot, mandarin and effervescent citrus; a heart of Tom Ford black orchid, spicy floral orchid accords and lotus wood, and a drydown of patchouli, incense, amber, sandalwood and vanilla.

Next spring, Ford plans to "launch 12 unisex scents simultaneously".

Update: see a review of Tom Ford Black Orchid here, and more about Tom Ford Private Blend.

Marc Jacobs will introduce The Autumn Splash Collection in October:

Ivy has top notes of sparkling nutmeg, cardamom and mandarin; a heart of cool candy cane accord and fresh orris, and a drydown of warm suede, tonka bean, vetiver and sandalwood...Violet's top notes are of sparkling bergamot and peony; its heart is of delicate violet, orchid, orris and creamy cashmere accord, and its drydown is of cedarwood, vanilla, musk and gingerbread...Amber has top notes of crystallized ginger and star anise; a heart of cassia bark, ancient amber and elegant lys, and a drydown of tonka bean, cashmere wood and benzoin.

Coming next from Miller Harris: L'Air de Rien, a fragrance inspired by Jane Birkin: "The oriental fragrance, comprising notes of amber, vanilla, neroli, oak moss and musks, is meant to recall Birkin's life and passions." Look for it in September.

American Beauty, the Kohl's-exclusive brand, will launch Wonderful Indulgence this fall. The fragrance "has top notes of magnolia and dewy pear; a heart of iris, muguet, gardenia and jasmine, and a drydown of white Virginia cedarwood, white birch, velvety Georgia Peach and deep white amber."

The next television series-inspired fragrances come from Fox Network's The O.C. and will launch in October: The O.C for her "is a fruity, floral scent designed to appeal to feminine, girl-next-door types", The O.C. for Him has "fresh ozonic notes and a sea spray, as well as a hint of black pepper." (all above via Women's Wear Daily)

Cacharel will release Amor Amor Elixir Passion in September:

A fruity floriental, the juice is described as more sensual and seductive than the original. It opens on top notes of blood orange, mandarin and blackcurrant, leading to a heart of tiare flower, jasmine and lily of the valley. The base is a blend of sandalwood, Palmyra palm and benzoin oil. This too much!! All of these perfume notices bombarding my brain! I don't have much of one left at the best of times. I never understood the French obsession with Jane Birkin, so I think the name of the fragrance is strangely suitable ;D, The MJ splashes sound fun.

L, it positively makes the head spin. Something has to give, eventually: if the perfume companies insist on keeping up this pace, we'll all have to give up and find an easier hobby.

Dang! I agree with LaureAnne. Help me! I can't keep up.

Query: How many of these do you think will be truly great/memorable fragrances anyway, R? Other than Songes and a couple of others, have there been any truly wonderful releases so far this year?

And, why is Tom Ford naming a fragrance Black Orchid? Note to Tom: A Black Orchid is already out on the market, and I bet it's better than yours.

    Hugs!

I don't think it's a huge leap from launching three scents simultaneously (as Marc Jacobs is doing) or five (as Comme des Garcons has done) to launching 12. Anyway, a dozen's been done: there was a small Canadian fragrance company in the 1980s (I can't for the life of me remember the name; it will proibably come to me tonight just as I'm trying to get to sleep) that launched 12 all at once, one for each astrological sign. The packaging was very nice–I believe the bottle was a tall seven-sided prism–but the line, and possibly the company, vanished after a few years.

R, am at the beach and probably too relaxed to think clearly, but truly great for 2006, yes, very few. Other than Songes, would include Terre d'Hermes, a couple of the Le Labos, and maybe other things I can't remember at the moment. Black Orchid, well, we'll see. Tom Ford is no dummy, and they did trademark Black Orchid ages ago.

Where do you suppose I could pick up the Jane Birkin scent on the west coast?

Luckyscent in LA carries Miller Harris. I wouldn't necessarily count on them having it in September — but it might be worth emailing them to see when/if they'll have it in stock.

I finally bought the Marc Jacobs Splash Ivy today! Better late than never I guess, and a complete steal at just AU $49 for 300ml of fragrance!

I actually liked Violet the most of the three, but it smells so faint on my skin, while Ivy really stands out with its pronounced spice notes. Violet has turned very sweet on my skin now.
