Where I live, it is the first day of autumn, and this year, September is the new August: after a wet and confusingly mild vacation season1, we look likely to celebrate a glorious Indian Summer. I have always loved the early fall, so I’m tempted, each time I select the autumnal Top 10 at Now Smell This, to stack it with all my favorite chypres, floral ambers and woody orientals. This time, to avoid boring you with repetition, I’ve chosen fragrances released in the last two to three years. I can’t promise there will be any less oakmoss than usual, but I do think I’m fruitier and more craft distilled today…

Twilly d’Hermes ~ perfume review
The background: Twilly d’Hermès is the latest fragrance launch from Hermès. It’s aimed at young women and was inspired by the freedom and creativity with which they “transform” Hermès scarves, and “appropriate Hermès’ codes to do other things”.1 A twilly, in case you don’t know (or care) from scarves, is the brand’s long thin silk scarf (see example here), and indeed people wear them all sorts of ways: as neck scarves, as headbands, as belts, as purse accessories, etc. At the moment, a 32″ x 2″ Twilly runs $160 in the US.
The juice: Hermès house perfumer Christine Nagel decided she would likewise “transform” or “twist” her raw materials…

Hermes Rose Amazone, take two ~ fragrance review
Yes, you’re remembering correctly: Robin did write a brief review of Rose Amazone when it was launched in 2014 as a flanker to Hermès ‘s 1974 classic Amazone. Rose Amazone was developed by Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès’s in-house perfumer at the time, as a modern interpretation of Amazone: “a sparkling, tangy and tender perfume, brightened by citrus fruits, currants and raspberries.”
The idea of a young and fruity flanker was already a cliché in 2014…
