Thursday scent of the day 7/27

Posted by Robin on 27 July 2017 246 Comments

Hermes flacon twilly

It's Almost-Friday, plus Chili Dog Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Eau des Merveilles, by perfumers Nathalie Feisthauer and Ralf Schwieger.

Reminder: 7/28 will be Nathalie Friday...wear a perfume by Nathalie Lorson or Nathalie Feisthauer, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Les Flacons Bandana silk Twilly from Hermès, in three colors, £125 each at Hermès in the UK.

My SOTD is C.O. Bigelow Lemon Eau de Parfum. On the drive to work, my husband mentioned that I was wearing a new perfume, and he said that he liked it :-)

I’m wearing Alien eau Sublime, for a day of appointment’s and house cleaning. This scent is so cheerful and uplifting, my skin almost wants to reject it, lol! I really do like it, I think it will be great as a winter pick me up.

On Monday I wore Anjouan, a wonderful ambery ylang scent from Indice Parfums. Yesterday I tried their Mohéli and really hated it — it was a super-aquatic, calone-drenched thing that will be to some people’s tastes but not mine. Today I wore the third of the trio, Moroni, and it is glorious, an expensive-smelling fruity floral pairing jasmine and ylang, with a gourmand finish. Two out of three is pretty good!

I’m commenting below on Fleur des Fleurs and it could be similar to your Moroni with a common ylang ylang & jasmine base, but FdF has more tuberose and woods, whereas Moroni is fruitier? I have to see if a find a sample!

I haven’t tried FdF but Moroni is unquestionably a fruity floral, no tuberose and no noticeable wood (I’m sure there’s a dab of something like Polysantol in the base to give it some staying power, because it survives a shower no problem). You can get 2-mL spray samples of all three for 5 euros from the Indices Parfums website.

I was sampling it yesterday and today it deserves a full 2 sprays: Fleur des Fleurs, Une nuit à Bali (of the Une nuit nomade line), it’s a joyful white flower bomb, could maybe be “Vamp à NY”‘s slightly more sophisticated and less boozy big sister, probably because both claim to use only “natural” ingredients?

Another Ormonde Jayne today from a sample: Champaca. This is really nice even though it starts off a little sweet. I have a hard time with florals but I could definitely live with this one if a bottle fell in my lap.????

You smell great! It doesn’t read very floral to me at all. Mostly I get nutty, toasted rice tea and citrus. My facorite of what I tried. Wish it lasted a tad longer on me, though.

SOTD is Queen which is just as good as I remembered. Sometimes, you remember things better than they were and it’s a bit disappointing when you revisit them, but not my Queen!

Very hot, so did the waterfall hunting yesterday and a bit of hiking. Took the van on some very sketchy twisty forest roads with nail biting grades and it did quite well. I’m wishing I hadn’t gotten the extended version because it’s less maneuverable in tight situations, but all in all, it did fine.

Got home, fed T-Rex who appeared to be ravenous, took her outside for business and somehow she managed to squat right in a nest of ants. Before I knew it, they were swarming all over her. Brushed them all off, got her inside, where she promptly went into shock. Emergency vet luckily is only two miles away and now she is a bit low but otherwise fine.

We’re going to have a very low key, boring day today. I’m pooped????

Poor T-Rex. My dachshund once stumbled upon a wasps nest. Luckily she didn’t suffer any serious damage but she was very quiet for a while. I hated having to watch her suffer.

It has a very strong scent – jasmine mixed with something herbal and slightly spicy. I do not know what henna smells like, but if this herbal scent is henna, it’s not bad. Strange, but not unpleasant. But it can linger for days for sure!

    SOTD is Olympic Orchids “Arizona”.

Notes: black locust, pine, juniper, artemisia and wild flowers.

Not so much a perfume as a landscape painted in scent. I’ve never been to Arizona, but to me the pine leaf/ pine resin/ Mediterranean herb vibe reminds me of Les Landes in France, or Naxos in Greece. I’ll put it on the longlist, although I’m doubtful I’ll ever get a bottle on this side of the Atlantic.

I’m trying to imagine who would wear a Hermes twilly bandana? All I can come up with is a very camp street gang (maybe Kensington High Street or the Rue St Honoré). They can all pile out of their Suzuki Vitaras and dance lightly yet menacingly down the road, clicking their fingers and jangling their gold chains (with Pandora charms), like an updated West Side Story.

Also: is there anyone here who can eat a peach neatly, and if so can they teach me? Thanks. :^D

So, I used to have a Twilly equivalent from Coach (probably at 0.2x the cost), and for a while I had it tied onto my Coach handbag. Everyone made fun of me–“your purse has a scarf?” Also, it was kind of inconvenient, so I eventually took it off.

Since I don’t have any Hermes purses (swoon, sigh), tying an Hermes scarf on a non-Hermes bag would be even sillier!

Jasper! Imogen! Come inside. Mummy has something important to tell you.
What is it? Tell us! Is it dreadful? Not Spanky ….
Yes, I’m afraid Uncle Spanky has done something very silly and foolish. He’s been caught on CCT …. I can hardly bring myself to say it….he was caught wiping peach juice off his chin with a twilly scarf.
No! NO! But what will happen to us? How will we ever be safe from the Twilly Gang now?
It’s all right, Darling. Mummy has talked to Uncle Roger in the Defence department and he has arranged for a tank to be parked outside our home. If any member of that frightful Twilly Gang dares to show their face….well, let’s not spell it out. Now, let’s cheer ourselves up. Go and fetch nanny and ask Viktor to bring the car…Chanel is having a sale. New schoolbags for everyone!

If you have a really good peach, there is no neat way to eat it, except possibly standing over the kitchen sink and doing the “Philly Cheesesteak Stance”.

Well, you should come visit Arizona! I haven’t smelled that perfume, but from the notes you mentioned, I’d say it would be the scent of driving up one of our mountains. You’d smell the artemisia (sagebrush) at lower elevations, then the juniper, and then the pine at the top.

The Twilly Gang! ???? OMG, I can picture it! But who would the rival gang be?

How to eat a peach? In fruit cocktail! Problem solved. You’re welcome. ????

I was going to tell you that I think I’m going through a period of perfume fatigue too. I was looking at my decants and samples this morning and was so overwhelmed so I just grabbed my Shalimar and sprayed (it’s my go-to). Maybe I’ll just stick to it for a few days and try and reset. It’s possible mine is because I’ve got so much going on with the relocation and all, who knows…Anyway, just thought I’d share since you’ve been going through something similar.

Hope the fresh air eases the Charlie pain!

I understand you. Stress might be contributing to your fatigue and lack of interest. Stick to whatever you like or give yourself a complete break. I am pretty sure you will be back to normal sooner than later. I think we all go thru the same fatigue many times in our lives. Just be patient!

Did yours come yet? I saw that too. I don’t think Sottile is as popular as some of the other scents. I also don’t think they expected the response that they got for the sale. You’d thing they’d check with the supplier first to see how much stock is available so that they can inform people that things are sold out during the sale instead of weeks later after people have paid already.

I’m wearing a sample of Pelargonium today – it’s one of my two Nathalie scents. Based on Angela’s review I was expecting something really exciting, but my skin must not be amplifying some crucial notes because it’s just “meh” and almost gone.

I’m about to go wash off the insipid remains and put on something more exciting. Probably Jasmin et Cigarette. Thanks for the inspiration Jiji!

The last two times I tried it, I think my skin was doing something funny, because there was a horrible pungent top note that others have said is the Iso E Super. But today, it was as glorious as the first few times I tried it–oodles of vetiver all around. I hope it stays like this in the future!

This also made me realize that all my favorite Sweet Anthem scents are discontinued… oh well. There are other perfumes!

PSA – Kazimi Rose (House of Matriarch) is at 50% off with coupon code INMYHEART. It is a great rose that rarely goes on sale :)
SOTD – still Mysore Sandalwood attar.

I’m trying out Room 1015’s Power Ballad today and it’s a deeply, deeply boring scent. I ended up looking around for reviews and found the one from November of 2016 on this site, and couldn’t agree more with Jessica’s take on it. To my nose it smells like the Barbasol shaving cream I steal from my boyfriend when I shave my legs, with a few meek spices added.

I was a kid in the 1990s but I remember the teenagers of that decade (I thought they were *so* cool), and I think my nostalgia for that era would be better suited by grabbing some Davidoff Cool Water or maybe some Hugo Boss from the drugstore.

Morning, all. Yesterday passed off fine, I think, but you know that feeling of still being in motion when you get off a long flight or finish a car trip? Well, I’m still saying names very clearly in my head…”Mosese Aualiitia = Mo-SESSE-e Awalee’eetee-ah.” Seventy students turned up LATE–registry was scrambling behind the scenes to re-write the lists. Many of the pages I was handed had crossings out and re-instatements. It must have been thirty times more stressful behind the scenes than it was for me on stage. But it’s over. Done. Yay! And to celebrate, I’m wearing La Pausa, which strikes me as perfect for a long road trip (6 hours) on a cold wet day. I’ve packed Beloved for the trip home.

Take care, all. And remember, give every syllable its due weight, and watch your glottal stops. Because, after all, who knows what might happen if the glottal stops get out of control?

En vacance in VCA Orchidee Vanille, which I’d been dying to try but can hardly smell despite a good dousing. It strikes me that it might be best in winter soaked into a sweater, so I think I’ll sock it away for a few months.

I actually wanted to wear EdM today but I’d sprayed Shaal Nur in the a.m. and knew it wouldn’t stand up to the last traces of my SOTM. Tomorrow!

Wow. I just gave notice at my job. I’ve been looking around for a while now and it really is amazing how feast or famine things can go. For the longest time, I couldn’t even get a call back but this week I got a great offer, a callback from another place and my current employer scrambling to keep me.
Wearing 31 Rue Cambon (3 sprays today cause why not?) and feeling grand.

Today I’m wafting Amouage Opus IX from a spray mixed into my body lotion. I thought that might lessen its projection slightly by diffusing it. Alas, it did not. Eh, live and learn.

Pretty darned big, which is potentially problematic since it’s also quite animalic. Picture the amount of juice in a single spritz from a manufacturer’s sample. That’s all I apply. ????

Depends on where you work. ????????…But, seriously, no. I’m not a good judge of how others perceive/react to animalic scents, but the projection alone should rule it out, I’d say. (Luckily, I’m not gassing anyone out today.)

Alaia is a bit tempermental to me. I’ve noticed that it needs hot weather to be at its best; otherwise, it seems kind of washed out or faded. Just my $0.02 worth.

SOTD = Christian Dior Dior Addict + Il Profumo Vanilla Bourbon

I drenched myself with Addict and then added a few spritzes of Il Profumo and Il Profumo wimpped out and was no match for Addict. But I wafted vanilla tonka sandalwood something fierce ALL day! Thanks to a dear perfumista who gifted me a decant.

Saw on the train – consider that it was humid and in the high 70s / low 80s – red-nosed woman wearing the world’s thickest sweatshirt hoodie, a heavy scarf wound around her neck, khaki pants and open-toed strappy sandals, blowing her nose like there was no tomorrow. Lady – if you are THAT sick, stay home; also, strappy sandals, even though they match your slacks perfectly, do not go with your winter outfit.

Heard on a train platform – thank God it was not crowded – a BIG LOUD FART. She had the audacity to look around as if looking for a culprit. I just looked at her with a knowing looked and edged away.
