Niche x 3: Eau d’Italie Graine de Joie, Memo Kedu, Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie

Posted by Robin on 28 August 2014 14 Comments

Quick reviews of three recent niche releases: Eau d’Italie Graine de Joie, Memo Kedu and Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie. Do comment if you’ve tried any new or interesting niche fragrances lately!

Eau d’Italie Graine de Joie

Eau d'Italie Graine de Joie

Is anyone here a massive fan of Eau d’Italie? I admit I’ve mostly lost interest; nothing they’ve done since Baume du Doge in 2008 has really impressed me, and the shampoo-ish packaging is a turn-off. Graine de Joie, intended to celebrate love, is a sweet ‘n tart fruity floral…

Sweet Anthem Juliet ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 4 June 2014 32 Comments

Guerrier Sandwichien

On sultry summer days this year (there’ll probably be around, oh, fifteen of them in Seattle if we’re lucky), when someone asks me what sultry perfume I’m wearing, I’ll have a hard time saying (whispering?) “Juliet.” First, I don’t like Shakespeare’s annoying teen, the inspiration for this perfume, and secondly, Sweet Anthem Juliet,1 the fragrance, does not remind me of virginal 16th century Verona girls. As I wear Juliet, I’ll be thinking of the South Pacific and Gauguin’s colorful images of half-naked men and women, flowers around their necks or in their hair, lounging near the sea. I wanted to use Gauguin’s painting, Jeune Homme à la Fleur to illustrate this post, but it’s not in the public domain, so the tattooed guy above will have to suffice (and I don’t think anyone would dare give him grief for wearing a perfume called “Juliet”).

Sweet Anthem, founded by perfumer Meredith Smith,2 is an indie/artisan perfumery based in Seattle. Juliet combines many of my favorite things…

Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 20 September 2013 16 Comments

Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede

The latest fragrance release from Jo Malone is Peony & Blush Suede, a fruity floral developed by perfumer Christine Nagel. Its official description reads: “Peonies in voluptuous bloom, exquisitely fragile. Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower. Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede. Luxurious and seductive.”

Peony & Blush Suede does open with apple, but it’s a pleasantly cider-y apple, not anything like the Jolly Rancher green apple note that shows up in so many mass-market perfumes. The rest of the fragrance is a soft floral with musky underpinnings. The peony is honeyed and a touch dusky, not the lemony-bright flower that some other peony fragrances have tried to evoke…

Marc Jacobs Honey ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 16 July 2013 43 Comments

marc-jacobs-honey-lineup

The Marc Jacobs vinyl-accented juggernaut continues with Honey, a sort-of flanker to 2012′s Marc Jacobs Dot, which of course followed Lola and Daisy and all of their flankers. More specifically, Honey “channels the eclectic appeal of Marc’s Dot signature and adds her own golden touch”.

If you’ve liked what they’ve done with the bunch so far, you’ll probably like Honey too. Like the rest, it’s basically a cheerful and wearable fragrance. To my mind, Daisy was the most cheerful and most wearable of them all, and while Honey isn’t going to knock Daisy off her pedestal, it’s arguably less threatening than Lola or Dot — not that either Lola or Dot was particularly threatening.

Honey starts a bit crisp, but it’s sweet from the start, with lots of pear shampoo and with what they’re calling, in a rare case of truth in advertising, “fruity punch”…

Four quick reviews: Bobbi Brown Bed, Ed Hardy Skulls & Roses, Nicole by Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson Vintage Bloom

Posted by Robin on 15 November 2012 26 Comments

In my continuing (hopeless!) effort to catch up on the 2012 releases before 2013, some very quick reviews: Bobbi Brown Bed, Ed Hardy Skulls & Roses, Nicole by Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson Vintage Bloom. Do feel free to add your own quick reviews of recent(ish) releases in the comments!

Bobbi Brown Bed

Bobbi Brown Bed perfume oil

Bobbi Brown Bed is a web-only limited edition, and it’s basically just a mixture of neroli, orange flower and jasmine in a cute (but small!) glass bottle. If you like all three notes and are after something simple, it might appeal — I found it very pleasant, with a bright but calming aspect that does, in fact, work well for bedtime. It’s also balanced enough, with perhaps a tilt towards the neroli, that it would work for either gender. Do bear in mind that it’s an oil, so it stays relatively close to the skin. If you want something similar but heavier on the jasmine (and with more oomph in general), try Rodin Olio Lusso Perfume…
