Marc Jacobs Dot ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 14 August 2012 71 Comments

Marc Jacobs Dot fragrance adverts

Marc Jacobs’ original eponymous fragrance now seems an anomaly (and of course, Blush is nearly forgotten). Since the massive success of 2007’s Daisy — followed, of course, by her ‘older sister’ Lola in 2009 — it’s all vinyl flowers and sunshine and happy-happy pop music. Dot fits neatly into the family, from the whimsical (and flanker-ready) bottle to the waifish young model to the oh-so casual advertising.

Perfumer Annie Buzantian’s juice is very nearly besides the point — all it need do is play nicely with the “buy me” bottle. Any requirement for surprising and/or edgy and/or challenging has presumably been met by the visual elements; the fragrance itself can settle for pleasant and wearable. Daisy managed this perfectly; even a cranky perfumista like me found it “darned likable”. Lola was fine but I didn’t like it quite so well, and frankly I don’t like this new bottle quite so well,1 but whatevs — I’m old as the hills, and so Marc Jacobs isn’t after my money (or my opinion) anyway…

Kiehl’s Aromatic Blends collection ~ fragrance review

Kiehl's Aromatic Blends collection

Last month, Kiehl’s launched a new family of products called Aromatic Blends, “Pure Scents from Around the World.” I was initially uninterested in trying them, since I have bad memories of Molton Brown’s similarly travel-themed “Navigations Through Scent” line (harsh compositions, ugly bottles and prices even more ridiculous than their names). However, I do enjoy visiting the Kiehl’s counter once in a while, and once I’d sniffed the Aromatic Blends, I was ready to adjust my original reaction.

The four “blends” in this line are Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit, Orange Flower & Lychee, Fig Leaf & Sage and Vanilla & Cedarwood. I’m not really sure how “naturally derived” or “sustainably sourced” they are, but I do think their simple, landscape-inspired arrangements suit the overall Kiehl’s aesthetic. They’re nicely made (with one possible exception), they’re simply and attractively packaged, and they’re reasonably priced — in other words, they do what they set out to do. Here are a few quick thoughts on each fragrance, from lightest to richest.

Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit: Let’s get this one out of the way first…

Parfums de Nicolai L’Eau a la Folie & Ayala Moriel Etrog ~ fragrance reviews

Today, as I pack for my first summer vacation, quick reviews of two fragrances perfect for summer wear, on vacation or otherwise.

Parfums de Nicolaï L’Eau à la Folie

We’ve had debates here before about fruity florals — a segment of the perfumista community frowns on fruity florals simply because they’re so ubiquitous, and let’s face it, many (maybe even most) of them are pretty dull. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: some of my best friends are fruity florals. French niche house Parfums de Nicolaï made one of my favorites, the sadly discontinued sparkling mango summer-cocktail Eau Exotique. The brand’s latest, L’Eau à la Folie, is a citrus fruity floral that I’d likewise describe as a sparkling summer-cocktail, this time with peach, juniper berry, pink pepper, mint, lime, jasmine and rum…

Sarah Horowitz Perfect Bliss ~ fragrance review

Sarah Horowitz Perfect Bliss

Some rainy days inspire me to match their cloudiness with watery, wistful fragrances like Guerlain Apres L’Ondée or Frédéric Malle L’Eau d’Hiver. Other rainy days, particularly ones that fall after an especially beautiful sunny weekend in May, provoke me to counteract the forecast with something bright and euphoric. Lately I’ve been using a patterned magenta umbrella that cheers me slightly whenever I open it, despite the gloom and damp of the day’s weather; the right fragrance can have a similar effect on my mood.

This week, my anti-gray fragrance is Sarah Horowitz Perfect Bliss, for which the perfumer Sarah Horowitz-Thran was inspired by the floral arrangements at her own wedding. The composition for Perfect Bliss includes top notes of blood orange, mango, and papaya; a middle accord of gardenia; and base notes of vanilla, patchouli, cedar, and musk.

I like Sarah Horowitz’s lists of notes, because they usually reflect just what I’m smelling in the fragrances themselves…

MCMC Fragrances Love & Phoenix ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 21 August 2011 24 Comments

MCMC Fragrances Love & Phoenix

I love to watch other people shopping for perfume. I can’t usually do it for more than a minute or so without feeling invasive, but I’m always interested in the comments I overhear at fragrance counters. The main problem (aside from the risk that the person will suddenly realize I’m listening) is that I have to refrain from making suggestions. This is difficult, especially when a sales associate is relentlessly pushing the latest release rather than finding out what the person really wants, or worse yet, when the potential customer is standing alone and looking around anxiously for guidance.

Sometimes I wish I could recommend a fragrance line that’s not sitting right there on the shelves at Sephora or the department stores at my local mall. There seem to be plenty of women who have a favorite perfume and are looking for something along the same lines — something fruity and tart, for example, or a soft floral blend with some vanilla in it. But they also want a slightly more sophisticated or less commonplace alternative, and they’re not finding it at their usual retail destinations. I thought of those women when I smelled the two latest releases from the indie brand MCMC Fragrances. MCMC’s perfumes are directed towards a relatively small audience, but they’d probably also be appreciated by the desperately-seeking-something shoppers that I’ve watched from the corner of my eye…
