Tuesday scent of the day 8/4

Posted by Robin on 4 August 2026 133 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus Coast Guard Day, National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day and Louis Armstrong’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a favorite summer chypre, Parfum d'Empire Azemour Les Orangers, and I'm giving serious consideration to just wearing it for the rest of the week. Tea the moment is Rose Black by The Art of Tea.

Reminder: on 8/7, we're doing Chypre For All Seasons: pick a season, any season, then wear a chypre that works for it. Suggested by Jalapeno.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2026, where I'll occasionally manage to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Judith Leiber Embellished Teapot Clutch Bag ("Coming in hot – and embellished with crystals – Judith Leiber’s Teapot clutch bag marks another playful addition to your collection of minaudières. Instead of the kitchen cupboard, why not proudly display yours on a vanity table?") is £5,395 at Harrods. [You can see older versions here and here.]

Hi all, my SOTD Chypre week! (probably my favorite genre) is Niki de Saint Phalle, extrait, from the cobalt bottle with the snake top.
It’s going to be a scorcher today, so drinking my fluids and staying indoors. And I love that it’s National chocolate chip cookie day.

Great choice…hard to think of a chypre with better packaging. But you have to name a season!

Oh ! I forgot…. It should fit squarely into Fall, given the heavy greens and patchouli, but it also blooms beautifully in the summer.

Tea is Mariage Frères Vanille des Isles

I was thinking to myself it’s been a “Chypre” summer for me. I have been wearing Melograno, and the last few days Ralph Lauren Safari. I bought some lipsticks at Sisley Paris (yes that is plural lol) and I sprayed some Eau de Soir, another chypre. I am so interested in seeing what everyone else’s favorite chypres are!

I am just back from vacation in the San Juan islands off of Seattle. Very relaxing,as there is not much to do, and that is the beauty. Spotted some bald eagles, read a lot, and mostly took in the fresh air. Went to some amazing bookstores in the city, but compared to my last visit to Seattle over 15 years ago, I felt that there was a lot of change and not for the better.

Your vacation sounds fantastic! Now inquiring minds want to know-which shades did you get from sisley? I love their matte line but 22 Sheer raspberry has been a repurchase shade for me-think I’ve bought it continuously in the past five years.

I’m headed there (Seattle and San Juans) at the end of the week. And I agree with you on Seattle. I lived there, on and off, and go back a lot. It’s not the same city it was. A lot of that change had started when I last lived there 20 years ago, and I was living on Capitol Hill. I was downtown this winter trying to shop, and downtown has been decimated. But the light rail is nice now.

Chypre of the day: Balenciaga Paris.
    Season: spring.

Now, the question is: is this even a chypre? A chypre is normally characterized by strong contrasts between crisp, cool top notes, heady florals, and a warm, earthy oakmoss–labdanum–patchouli base. The structure is kind of there, but the “chypre effect” is missing. There is nothing strong or contrasting here. As Robin described it, it is muted.

Still ike it. And I claim partial credit.

It is a neo chypre…which to me might as well not be called a chypre but that never stopped anybody and if they call it a chypre, which they do, you get points 🙂

It has never occurred to me that Balenciaga might be a chypre. You’re so right, it has all the requisite notes but is somehow missing that chypre feel!

I’m in another surprise-to-me chypre, LVNEA Ghost Pine. The bright top note here is pine needles, the moss is mixed with fallen leaves, and I think the middle is some sort of tree resin although fragrantica just says “woody notes”. LVNEA’s website mentions pine pitch, and that seems spot on. Definitely a scent for autumn, matching the yellow-orange skies here lately. The wildfire smoke has descended … sigh.

And a rant: why, oh Apple emoticon gods, are there two for “needle” (🪡 💉) and still none for perfume? Sushi gets two. Santa, car and bread all get three. C’mon man!

SOTD is vintage Raphael Replique extrait. I find this to be solidly in the chypre category, with the characteristic citrus/floral/oakmoss structure, although Fragrantica for some reason classifies it as a “woody” scent. I find this one to be a more mossy, green chypre than some others, and definitely wearable in summer. This type of fragrace always puts me in mind of a walk in the forest, with the scents of damp earth and leaves.

And thank you to everyone who offered kind condolences this weekend on the death of my very close friend. I appreciated all of your support. In fact today is her birthday so it’s another tough moment to get through, helped by so many fun memories of her.

    Hello.
Sotd is Balenciaga Extra. Golden immortelle nectar sprinkled with crushed pink pepper.

I am feeling very grumpy today because 3 things had gone wrong.

    1. A document that I applied for from Ontario government should come back to me in 8 weeks and now it’s been 12 and when I called this morning, I was told it requires additional “review time” and can take another 8-10 weeks!? If I want it processed sooner I need to write letters of explanation and attach proof of urgency etc. I mean how hard is it for them to just press print and get me my papers??
    2. I bought my mum a very pricey designer bag and the packaged arrived last Friday and guess what? The box was EMPTY. I don’t know how or when the content was stolen and now I have to provide photos and a write up to have that processed.
    3. I saw a lab diamond ring on Pandora on sale but for some reason my card couldn’t pass check out. I was told buying a gift card would solve that problem. Guess what? It doesn’t work! To make matters worse, I was informed gift cards cannot be refunded because it’s final sale. That’s a lot of money and now I am forced to have to spend it on things I DO NOT WANT.
    🤬🤬
    Sorry, rant over.

That’s a lot of bad stuff, happy888cat. If your card gives you grief like that again-check with the service provider, and make sure all the information is correct. Visa had an incorrect postal code and that was the cause of my own issues with them. Sorry this happened to you.

Yeah, that a new for me. Had to go look it up. The reference to “smirk” got me. I’ve been guilty of that. 🙃

        min·au·dière (mē′nō-dyâr′)
        n. pl. min·au·dières (-dyârz′, -dyâr′)
A small ornamental case for cosmetics, jewelry, or personal items that is often carried as a handbag.
[French, from feminine of minaudier, affected, smirking, from minauder, to simper, smirk, from mine, appearance, countenance, from Old French, probably from Breton min, muzzle.]

This is an interesting one. No usual chypre ingredients (like citruses, moss, patchouli, labdanum), but other notes are selected in a way that it actually creates a chypre effect or at least comes close to it.

      What about naming a season?

We had a lot of snow yesterday so I stayed inside as our road wasn’t cleared and it was a bit slippery. I have an early morning hospital appointment today for a MRI so may just walk down the hill as we’ve had a hard frost in the night and it will be very icy ( and our road doesn’t get gritted). So, I will have to leave before 7am…brrr. My dog won’t understand why I’m going for a walk without her. Not sure what to wear for perfume but I will take one of Gaynor’s samples so I can spray for the walk home which is all uphill, so will bring out the scent. I’ll be in a hat and mittens thinking about you all in the heat over there.

Be careful on that slippery walk, Kanuka!

Since I spent so much $$$$$ on a new roof, I decided I needed to treat myself to something nice. I have wanted Jour d’Hermes Absolu for a long time and found a tester bottle at Jomashop, so I bought it. While I was there I saw Pamplemousse Rose, which lasts about five minutes on me but the five minutes are really nice, so I bought that, too.

In January I made a New Year’s resolution to get strong in 2026. I worked out with weights for about two weeks and then…well, you know what happened. Now it’s August. So I went to a local gym and picked a personal trainer. Yesterday was the first session and today my quads are so sore after my first-ever proper squats. It seems when I did them on my own I was not going low enough. So today I am recovering and taking Tylenol. SOTD is another sample and I’m wearing Marlou Carnicure. If MKK and Slowdive had a baby, this would be it. I get musk and honey, but it’s fading fast.

I have had a similar excuse for my recent perfume buying binge. We had to get new siding on our house as well as a new side door. Both very much necessary, but both fall into that category of nearly invisible repairs. That is, the new siding and the new door look very much like the old ones, so I have spent $$$$$ to end up with the house looking about the same as it did before. I figured I deserved to spend a (relatively) little bit of money on something for myself that was not simply a replacement in kind.

Too funny. I thought that was an actual tea pot, not a clutch. I love it as a tea pot. Not so much a clutch. Who wants to clutch a tea pot?

Anyway. I’m having a feet of clay moment with my perfume hero Bertrand Duchaufour. The L’Entropiste house. Anyone else tried anything from this line? I ordered six samples from the collection of 8 (the other two were not available in the US). Interesting notes? Absolutely. Fabulous names? Ye-es! Wearable? Not so much. Today I’m in Jodphur 6 AM. It is reminiscent of Hiram Green’s Shangri La. It is one of the easiest to wear from the set. But I already own Shangri La and I am working too hard to fall in love. Another one that I liked, not loved was Altamura, which I can no longer recall. I see the packet on my desk, so I know I thought it was worth revisiting. . . . sigh. Bertrand, is this the beginning of the end. Ain’t life a brook and all that?

In other Duchaufour news (I’m sorry if I already mentioned this at some point!), at the SF ScentFest I picked up a bottle of No. 11 Josephine that he created for the winery owner JCB. It wears like a spritzy cologne. Mostly, I bought it for the jade green, jolie laide bottle and how much Jean-Charles Boisset makes me smile. Check this out:

No CP for me today. I thought maybe there was a chypre in my set of bases from Abdes Salaam, but no dice, and I love the spice base so I just put it on instead.

I’m with Happy888Cat today, lots of grumbles. 1) My hometown in Washington State is burning. Fortunately my dad’s house is on the other side of town, but it’s still pretty grim. 2) I went for my first volunteer shift with Ockeghem Teen at a shelter on Saturday, and staff had me put my purse in a locked room while we worked in the kitchen. The next day, random purchases and attempts started showing up on my credit cards, which I still have, so someone needed time to get into my purse, find them in two different places in the purse, and photograph them. That was the only time my purse was outside my possession, so it had to be someone there. Sigh. So, all my credit cards are cancelled now, my new debit card isn’t working, and I have no way to pay for anything. Guess I’m on a no buy for a few days!

Sadly, not this side of the border? One of my cards was removed right away after I reported it, the other I had to remove myself, and neither gave me the option to add the new card. I have a rush order in, and may have it 3 days, though knowing this bank it’ll be screwed up.

Washington is tragic (actually the entire PNW). I’ve been following the fire for days and to learn that it was started by a person intentionally is really grim. I’m sorry about your cards. There’s no safe place anymore. I have downsized my wallet to a card case and if I’m going to be away from my bag at anytime, I just slip the card case in a pocket and keep it with me. Hope your new cards arrive quickly!

Oh, I’m so sorry and hope everyone stays safe from the fires! And what an incredible story about your credit cards! There should be an investigation as to who had access to the ‘locked’ room while your purse was in there, or who maybe forgot to lock the room? Seems like someone should be held liable for this.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the fires will be contained soon, I think I saw on the weather report that smoke from those PNW fires are expected to blow into the SF Bay Area this week.

Sorry about your cards! Wow, just mind boggling plus all the irritation to fix it. I hope things get sorted quickly.

I saw the reports on the Spokane fires. Good to hear your Dad’s house is OK. It’s so damn tinder dry here in the Okanagan too. There was the fire started by an atv’er a few days ago; not good. Plus all the other fires already going too. The province needs a month of rain.

I went to college in Spokane for a year, so the news reports coming out of there now are rather sad. I remember all the conifers surrounding the city. I hope that arsonist rots in jail for the rest of their life.

Unfortunately it has long been this way for grad school and beyond. I can see where for some parents, the job search doesn’t seem off-limits, because so many well-positioned parents over time have used their networks aggressively to place their kids. That was all done behind the scenes, of course, one senior person to another — not so obvious.

I worked in admissions for my MBA program, and it was insane what the parents would do — for their kids in their mid 20s (and mind you this was 20 years ago). While I was there, there was one mom who would clearly have a bit too much to drink every night and she would call the Director of Admissions’ voicemail and plead for her kid, over and over. But there were many other stories. And no, it does NOT help the kid’s case (quite the opposite).

I’m wearing Bulgari Eau Parfumee au The Vert today & for the next 3 days – had a medical appt today & have a dental appt tomorrow – not keen on being poked & prodded at all, a bit squeamish about it to be honest – but on Thursday we’re having lunch with my husband’s former colleagues which is always enjoyable, & on Friday we’re going to our favourite Indian restaurant for dinner with a dear friend of ours, so looking forward to 2 days of pleasure after the 2 days of, I won’t say pain as that’s over-dramatising things, but certainly discomfort!

Just back from the dentist & everything is fine & he’s happy with the non-invasive treatment, recommended by my previous dentist, that I’ve been doing since I was diagnosed with periodontitis 10 years ago. it’s kept under control using hydrogen peroxide, water, bicarbonate of soda & salt – for me, certainly much more preferable than actual medication.

I had fresh blueberries at teatime. Vintage Eau de Givenchy this morning, very summer-appropriate but no citrus, a gentle floral, very distinctive nonetheless and tonight for the CP Cacharel Eden (vintage), Fragrantica doesn’t list moss but all other sources do and I agree, definitely my strangest chypre and to this day one of the oddest perfume ever created I think. Lots of fruits, watery flowers and humid, earthy base with both moss and patchouli.

Greenhouse is a very apt description. I have both vintage and modern and they’re both good, vintage is just a touch stronger on patchouli.

A bit of excitement this morning here. As I was getting breakfast for 😻😽😺, I heard a sudden squeaking noise, turned and saw 😻leap through the open window back into the house from the screened porch with a tiny chipmunk in her mouth. She quickly dropped it and thus began lots of running and chasing through the house while we tried to rescue the poor creature. We gave up after a bit as we couldn’t corner it in just one room. Finally all 3 😻😽😺all wound up back on the screened porch. We removed them, closed off all access to the porch and opened the door to the outside a bit so the little guy could hopefully find its way out. 😻then continued to wander through the house searching but thankfully nothing has turned up yet 🤞. But 😻blames us for making her new toy disappear and she is very upset with us!

Another nice 🌞 warm but not hot day and I’m back to my ‘sea’ scents, enjoying Hermes EdM Bleu. Spent a good part of the afternoon volunteering at the library and looking forward to our town’s National Night Out tonight and dinner from whatever the food trucks are offering.

    Have a nice night! ☪️

It is! Fragrantica classfies EDT as Citrus Aromatic and EDP as Floral Green, and it became less mossier with reformulations, but it still has the structure of a classical chypre and is widely recognized as a chypre staple.

Hiya NST! Figured I’d give you all a break from listening to me kvetch about the weather, so I didn’t post yesterday.

The promised drop in temperature certainly arrived. I’d say it was close to a 50-degree drop between yesterday’s high temperature and the low temp this morning. I was able to turn off my A/C!

Getting smoke from wildfires both in state and out of state here. Air quality has been hanging out in the “Moderate” to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” since yesterday morning. This smoke plume might be headed East, too.

SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’Eau. Because I wanted to wear it.

I’m glad you are enjoying this CP!

A 50-degree swing sounds extreme, but it isn’t the biggest here. My brother was around for a 70-degree plunge in October 2019. That apparently tied for 4th place in the meteorological records. It went from 83 degrees to 13 degrees. So far, the all time champion of insane weather roller coaster temps is a whopping 76 degrees back in 2008.

You can mention the weather any time; mine here is ridiculously hot and bone dry. Of course it’s been a dangerous wildfire season too. I hate complaining about it, but it is worrying. We had a reprieve on Saturday but back to more of the same for the week.
