Tuesday scent of the day 2/4

Posted by Robin on 4 February 2025 162 Comments

It's Tuesday and Rosa Parks Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking community project points, with rose as a minor player in Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto.

Reminder: 2/7 is Rose Day, but we've already done rose for a Friday project at least twice, so we'll put a spin on it this time...wear your favorite fragrance that has a rose note but doesn't smell primarily of rose, or wear a rose fragrance layered with something that tones down the rose.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Judith Leiber Couture Teapot Tranquili-Tea Minaudiere (yep, that's a purse) is $5,495 (yep again) at Neiman Marcus.

Wouldn’t want to break that tea 🫖 pot!

I am doing a week of Chanel.

Today I am in one of my favorites that I would love a full bottle one day: 31 Rue Cambon

Yesterday I wore Comete, before that 19 Poudre

I’m in a favorite, Hermann à mes Côtés, which has a rose note, but only faintly in the background, as a rather generic floral note.

    Hello NST.
That little teapot purse is kind of amazing.
Today I’m gathering no points, wearing L’orpheline for it’s beautiful incense. I need to do a week of incense perfumes before long.
It’s was 52F yesterday and 25F this morning, February returns.

I have a few things in mind for the CP, but this morning the hand went to Or du Serail. Its mango note is quite cheery on this chilly morning. Snow predicted for tomorrow morning, thankfully only an inch or so, and temperatures rising to 40f by noon-ish. Might have to bundle up and take some pictures while the snow lasts.

Today I’m in vintage Halston Catalyst for Men, which according to Fragrantica has rose in it along with about thirty-six other things, not that you’d notice — it’s mostly about spices and balsams, and pretty spectacular. (For some reason they don’t list clove, which to me is one of the dominant notes.)

It’s discontinued, of course, but if you can find a bottle for a reasonable price (and good luck with that), snap it up. It’s great stuff, complicated in the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink mode that dominated perfumery from the early eighties until well into the nineties, and the packaging is irresistible — the bottles are laboratory beakers and flasks, the EDT is in a big test tube complete with stand, and when it was launched the GWP was a little test-tube rack with 30-mL bottles of three products from the line. Everything about it said “We know what men want.”

    Hello.
    Sotd is Oud Alezan.
Passed by Tom Ford and F-ing Fabulous is now available in Parfum! The bottle is the same black but with a metallic oxblood plaque. Smells very similar to FF, a little more power perhaps but there is also a greenish, fresh note at the beginning. Worth a sniff, not sure about purchase though..

The puddles produced by yesterday’s above-freezing temperatures and consequent snow melt have today, with temps in the 20’s, turned into sullen and treacherous mini ice-rinks on sidewalks and driveways, and in backyards. But at least a couple of my orchids are blooming, and a couple of others are preparing to do so! Nothing fancy, just grocery-store phalaenopsis, but a welcome sight on a gloomy day.

I’m staying on the green path and wearing Goutal Grand Amour, though I fear it is actually wearing me. And it has a rose note, though I can’t find it, so I’m CP compliant, sort of.

I like them both. I would wear the Iris Poudre at any time, the EM at night or in the winter. The IP had incredible sillage on me, and the different stages really filled me nose with many different scents. The powder became very soft and sweet as time went by. When I hugged my neighbor goodbye after joining us for dinner, she said I smelled amazing 8 hrs after application. EM: The strong incense definitely reminded me of church on the initial opening. 6 hrs later it’s moved onto a smooth spice note. Both days I keep smelling my wrist because of the fragrance. Thank you again Kris for the NST welcome to a newbie!

I’m not either, Madtowngirl, and yet I also have a lot of fragrances that feature rose. Today I’ve chosen Tocade from Rochas, an ambery vanillic rose with woods and spices. It’s one of my more sweet fragrances, but everything is perfectly balanced. I also love the cheerful geometric sculptural bottle.
Daniel, the Halston Catalyst Man was also notable for coming in a very faux scientific presentation. The bottle looked like a test tube suspended between two metal posts. Or maybe that was an LE, I can’t remember, but it was striking.

Wearing SL La Couche du Diablo for the CP, a spice-amber cocktail with sticky rose. Yesterday I was walking the dog around the playing fields and sports grounds ( a good area for birdwatching in the bordering trees) when I noticed that one of the fields was full of players which is unusual on an early weekday morning. Anyway, I went closer and it was rugby players, (turned out to be the trials for our professional rugby team). They were huge, tall and solid and so fast. Rugby players don’t wear all that stuff that American footballers do ( although they do wind electrical tape around their heads and ears …to stop their ears being pulled in a scrum off I guess…you see the tape sometimes then incorporated into blackbird nests, because plastic must have its uses). I stood on the edge of the pitch watching as it was pretty mesmerising for rugby. I thought of them later when I was at the gym with my 10kg weights…goodness knows what they lift, probably each other.

I’m wearing Eau Capitale for the latent rose.

I rarely, if ever thunk bottles but today I thunked a bottle of Fragonard Narcisse. It doesn’t feel quite as satisfying as I hoped because it’s a bottle of that I didn’t care for as a fragrance and used instead as a bathroom freshener. Oh well, a thunk is a thunk.

Not a fan of rose-centric scents so I’ll probably skip this weeks CP. Wearing instead some comforting CSP Banane Vanille so I smell like banana Runts, and I’m fine with that. It’s fun. (Said in the most morose tone ever!😜) I have no words about that teapot purse…

Continuing to read Coyote America, which had been very interesting, especially their population of, and migration to the eastern US. As I was driving here (meaning around the first of the year), I passed a road sign upon which some stellar human hung a dead coyote by its back right leg. Sort of a semi-crucifixion. I can only hope it was dead before they nailed it there. Anyway, that’s pretty indicative of what people around here think of coyotes. And even more interesting is that the way people pronounce the word is a tell for how they feel about the animal itself. And the animal, like everything else, has become so politicized that grown a$$ men will throw down and come to blows over it. People are nucking futs. I have a healthy respect for them, and though I have some hippie tendencies, I know when a wild animal has the ability to rip out my throat or make off with my Baby T-Rex to savor with lip smacking enjoyment at some hidden spot in the desert. I have come to the conclusion doggo will never be off leash here. Bear spray is our friend. I love to see wild animals, in the wild and not in a zoo, but I never mistake them for lap dogs or friendly kitties. Nevertheless, I hate when stupid cruel people have the upper hand over any kind of animal, wild or domestic.

One of the more interesting concepts in the book is that we especially hate coyotes because they mirror the human ability to adapt, by devious, tricky behaviors, all the while mocking us as they continue to expand territory, right into our back yards. The unending campaign to eradicate them by any means necessary has failed, so essentially they have out-tricked the trickiest bipedal. No wonder native cultures admired them so.

    Maybe I need a coyote perfume..?🐺

Yep, they’re not interested in us. I’ve had a few close and distant encounters where I knew they had a pointed interest, not in me, but in doggo. Most recently when I was looking uphill at some petroglyphs in a volcanic escarpment only to luckily see a flutter of light colored fur. It caught my eye, turned out to be an ear, and as I continued to look, a healthy sized head slowly appeared from behind some basalt boulders, then slowly disappeared. While I kept my eye on that area for a good ten minutes, I never saw it again. Pretty sure it was following along with an eye on doggo. But, while not heavily trafficked, the trail had an occasional human other than me, so no bold moves from Mr Coyote. But to look into the eyes of a wild animal, read what’s there, is always thrilling to me.

The year we had so many bears on the island our cabin occupies that people were calling the MNR to complain (like a tenant calling the landlord about rats), I called the MNR also, to ask what I could do in aid of the bears. He said the kindest thing I could do for them was to make any encounter with a human as scary as possible: throw a rock if you’ve got a good arm (I don’t) or make a terrifying noise. A bear (and probably any large predator) without a healthy fear of humans and their habitations is likely to be dead sooner rather than later. So, I beat on a metal pan with a metal spoon and bellowed at the next bear who came loping into the clearing and it turned on its heel and fled in horror. It broke my heart a little because I would have enjoyed observing it, but there we are. I scare bears, I am terrifying.

Absolutely agree! The kindest thing you can do for wild animals is to scare them, thus potentially saving their life down the road. A while back I was reading Lewis and Clark’s journals and was astounded at their daily wildlife encounters, especially bears, many of them, as described, must have been grizzlies…🐻

Ours are fortunately “just” black bears. Later events proved to me that even a moderately scolding tone was enough to frighten away the yearling cub who had just knocked my porch plant over. I hope I don’t sound that scary to people….

The same type of situation here. Most interactions with wild animals that lead to human injury or death are driven by human stupidity. We see it every year in parks with large mammals such as bison and elk. I carry bear spray most of the time when in wilderness areas, although honestly it’s more for human predators. People have become so disengaged from nature they have lost critical judgement regarding the potential for injury or death. I was once on a hike in Yellowstone in winter with a group and we had to pass by a herd of bison. Led by a wildlife biologist, he poo-poo’d me when I feebly suggested we pass at a greater distance. One great thing about the rise of cell phones is that people who harass wildlife or destroy artifacts on public lands are getting caught and fined, being banned or possibly even getting jail time.

That is a great book Deva!!! I love how it mixes history, zoology, myth, anecdote, evolution, and changing attitudes toward them over the centuries. The book also explains that they reproduce more when they are threatened. The epigenetics are very interesting. I admire how adaptable they are. We live around tons of ‘yotes as we call them chez nous because the dog goes crazy if we even say the whole word. We see them and hear them every day as we are in a residential neighborhood that abuts some local hills and their eerie banshee screaming is both beautiful and spooky. We had one sleeping in my neighbor’s planter and our street named him “Fred.’ Poor guy was a singleton and couldn’t find a pack. We lost a cat to them when we first moved in because we didn’t realize they were out all day as well as night which was terrible but also our fault, co-existence is important, it’s their land too. I am very sad at the cruelty humans display to them and all wild animals.

Quite a few people here call them ‘yotes as well.

I remember seeing one trotting next to a runway at the Denver airport in broad daylight ages ago.

So you might like Lush Bananaaa Shower Cream…to my nose, it is the same banana candy smell as the CSP, plus coconut. It has some detractors in the reviews but I am loving my little travel size.

      Points.
I find that rose is often overpowered in heavy rose-oud scents like this one. I can smell rose from the bottle and in the opening, but then oud and other dark notes take over.

Going quite full rose today in Calligraphy Rose. I’m starting to get anxious about wearing all my cold-weather fragrances before it warms up, not that it’s at all sunny or warm here today!

I didn’t get a chance to comment on the reading poll this past weekend (not much to report on my end), but want to say that I noted down many of the mentions and yesterday I checked out The Gift of the Rain.

Yes mostly Amber’s. I have 2 Mugler Majesties collection and a tobacco one. Also Angel and Killians Angel Share. Lutens Cedre which is honey and tuberose. All very heavy and I have really been gravitating towards light florals.

Still going through my Scentrique sample pack for the month, and am non-CP compliant in Phaedon Oriental Mint. (It says it has “rose geranium”, does that count? 🙂 ) I’m kind of wishing I’d reached for something else, not because I dislike this perfume but because I didn’t realize it was going to be a tenacious fougère, and I’m not in the mood for that today. The top notes were interesting, with the mint and the fougère together, but now it’s just a straight-up fougère and I’d rather be in something with a hint of rose. 🙂 But, this is probably one of the better scents in this month’s pack.

Still dealing with unusual (for us) cold and snow. All the parents on the school WhatsApp have been in a tizzy because all the private schools and universities are closed while the public schools are still in session and they don’t want to drive to school. The roads have been fine, though.

One of the moms finally pointed out that the public schools try harder to stay open, especially as there are kids that rely on the schools as a regular source of food. And also that parents of elementary kids who work rely on their kids being in school. Yep. Agree 100%.

In other news, I have to renew my driver’s license to RealID. I realize that some states have already done so but NJ is so slow. I have to make sure I have all the required documents. I also have to make an appointment which I’ve been told is a more civilized way to do things so I am all for it. Regarding the documents, it seems that I can use some twice but since I am not certain, I will make sure to bring “extra” because I don’t want to have to go back!

I’m curious as to what “documents” you have to have? I have a Florida DL and one year, maybe a couple years ago now, I renewed it online and the replacement had the RealID star. I don’t remember having to furnish any additional documents…

Some states have RealID licenses as the default.

New Jersey does not. They allow people a choice between a “regular” license and RealID. The regular license requires less documentation and can’t be used to board flights or access government facilities.

In California you need 2 official bills with your current name and address like a property tax bill and a DWAP bill. Certified Copy of Birth Certificate. All documentation related to name change, including court proceedings, marriage certificates (certified copy, no photocopies).

Yesterday I accidentally got CP points with Confessions of a Garden Gnome: after reading the CP, I sniffed myself and went, “Wait a minute…”

I don’t think I have the best nose for picking up individual notes, particularly non-dominant ones, so was pleased with myself.

This morning also got CP points for Le Parfum de Therese. I don’t have a lot of florals in my collection, but love that one.

Just took a shower before heading out to dinner with a friend from out of town. Haven’t seen her since last spring. Will add another CP-compliant scent (made a list last night), not sure which yet.

We’re going to a dinner at a slightly bougie restaurant I’ve never tried before. All dining seems expensive these days, even casual places, so I hope it’s good.

Gorgeous teapot today, Robin. But OUCH, that price tag!!

Had a catch-up lunch with one of my favorite cousins earlier this afternoon. Traffic was a nuisance, though, with an accident on the highway. (Thankfully, I was not involved, except for being stuck in traffic for a little while.) Seems one particular interchange is a magnet for that kind of stuff. Ain’t that always how it goes? 🤔
