Posted by Robin on 12 December 2023 10 Comments

Yves Saint Laurent will introduce launch Black Opium Over Red, a new flanker to 2014's Black Opium, which was a flanker to 1977's Opium.

Black Opium Over Red adds a cherry accord to Black Opium's coffee florals. The notes include cherry accord, mandarin, jasmine, orange blossom, black tea, coffee, patchouli and vanilla.

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Eau de Parfum Over Red will be available in 30, 50 and 90 100 ml.

Update: there is also a 10 ml size. The description from Yves Saint Laurent:

Black Opium Eau de Parfum Over Red—the iconic sensual coffee floral accord from Yves Saint Laurent turns red with a hypnotic and radiant ingredient, a juicy cherry accord. This sought-after sweet perfume scent takes the signature of Black Opium into a new fruity universe. Black Opium Eau de Parfum Over Red is the dreamiest warm and sweet cherry perfume that truly captures the senses and lasts all night long.

“FOR THIS NEW OPUS, WE WANTED TO TAKE THE BLACK OPIUM SIGNATURE INTO A NEW UNIVERSE. THE ICONIC COFFEE FLORAL SIGNATURE TURNS RED WITH A UNIQUE AND JUICY INGREDIENT: THE CHERRY ACCORD.” — NATHALIE LORSON Master Perfumer

It’s red, it has cherry, somebody will buy it regardless.

(But also, I love cough syrup cherry)

I guess they were stuck with trying to convey the cherry when they had to stick with “Black”, but yeah, “over red” is awkward.

I think I will stick to my very fond memories of the original I first wore in 1977 & continued to do so for many years, thank you!
