Friday scent of the day 9/29

Posted by Robin on 29 September 2023 248 Comments

Happy Friday and happy National Coffee Day! It’s also World Heart Day and International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction. RIP Michael Gambon. Birthdays today: Elizabeth Gaskell, Colin Dexter and Diana Vreeland. Our community project for today: Wear one of Vreeland's favorite perfumes (reportedly YSL Opium and Chanel No. 5), or wear something equally bold, or wear something from her posthumous perfume line, or take inspiration from a Diana Vreeland quote (more here), or ?

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm redoing yesterday, since I was out sick...I'm in Myrrhe Églantine for the deliciously ludicrous Vreeland quote "Why don't you...have an elk hide trunk for the back of your car? Hermès of Paris will make this".

Reminder: 10/6 is Mad Hatter day. Wear your silliest perfume, or come up with a silly excuse to wear whatever perfume you wanted to wear anyway.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is a still from the documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.

Our local Walmart cancelled my Covid vaccine appt. because they ran out of vaccine. Life is a small, rural town. SOTD is Krazy Krizia, so not doing the CP.

Don’t feel bad. I had to go to three different pharmacies before I found one that had any and I live in a city of 200,000. Some of the pharmacies had it, but ran out. However, they were all getting more. I think they are getting small quantities at first until they get an idea how many people plan to get vaccinated this time. Many have said they are not getting another dose of it.

Glad to hear you are better, Robin!

I am in Chanel No. 5 EDT (my favorite concentration). Vreeland probably wore extrait.

My two personal favorite Vreeland quotes are:

“I believe, you see, in the dream. I think we only live through our dreams and imagination. That’s the only reality we really ever know.”

    “Elegance is refusal.”

And the second quote is not just about elegance, in my opinion. “Less is more” can give great results in different aspects of life.

Yes, it has moderate to average longevity on me. But I do not mind spraying it again during the day, especially since I have a travel spray – it fits great in the palm of my hand, and it is so satisfying to twist the top to make it pop up.

I am taking inspiration from the Vreeland quote “Why don’t you…wash your blond child’s hair in dead champagne, as they do in France?”

I don’t have a blond child (or any child), my own hair is brown, and I seem to be all out of dead champagne, but I am wearing Germaine Monteil Champagne.

I’m glad you are doing better, Robin. I have had three COVID vaccines (an initial J&J shot and two boosters of the Pfizer), and I had a pretty rough time with all of them. The J&J was the worst, but even with the Pfizer, I have learned that I need to plan it for a time when I don’t need to do anything much for a day or two afterward.

I would describe it as a very bright, light, not overly sweet floral. I don’t get much of the heavier notes (vanilla, tobacco, musk) that Fragrantica lists for it. I think the name fits it very well. It seems to have only been sold for a few years, and bottles of it go for rather impressive prices online. I managed to snag one that was more reasonably priced. Somewhere I read a description of the bottle as “Art Deco meets Star Wars” and I think that is very apt.

This is my fourth shot, and like you I was sick from each of the first 3. I am definitely better but I definitely don’t feel well at all. I am at least out of bed and getting some stuff done.

I expect I will be 100% tomorrow, and it is so much better than having covid that it is well worth it. Next month I will get the flu shot, we’ll see how I do with that.

I tested positive for COVID back in July, and I honestly would not even have known I had the virus if it were not for that positive test. I am telling myself that it was because I have been vaxxed. If the vaccines did in fact keep me from getting really sick, then I guess the side effects were worth it. The most recent booster had me completely out of commission for a weekend, and really low in energy for about two weeks.

I had the same experience last July, and it took 3 days to realize it was Covid, and not just allergies or a cold. I’ve got my vaccine appointment lined up!

I never did get any real symptoms from the actual virus, at least not during the supposed active infection. The only reason I had tested myself at all was that I was attending an event where they were asking everybody to test. About a week of so after the positive test–and after subsequently testing negative three times–I developed a persistent (although not severe, just annoying) cough, and a general lack of energy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I had it, as well. I had the 2 step Moderna and then one booster. I’ve been sneezy and snotty for the past couple of weeks, occasionally short of breath but I think that has more to do with de-conditioning and altitude rather than Covid/RSV/Flu. We’re ALL going to get it eventually so it’s just a matter of decreasing severity of symptoms at this point. I will look into get updated vaccines this fall, but since I’m not working, hence no medical coverage, I’m not sure how much it will cost..?

In my case, the “symptoms” for the first week or so were as mild as could be, namely, nothing. The timing, OTOH, was the worst it could have been. I was 2000+ miles from home at a week-long music workshop (Sunday through Saturday) in the Seattle area. I tested negative on the preceding Friday, the day before my flight. I tested negative again on Sunday before arriving at the workshop. Then Wednesday morning, lo and behold a positive test. I had to leave the workshop and find a hotel to stay in for the remaining days I was supposed to be staying at the workshop facilities. I had planned a couple of days of sightseeing after the workshop and before flying home Monday, but I was concerned that I shouldn’t be around crowds of people when I was knowingly positive, even though I felt fine. I ended up spending five days isolating in a hotel room (with a kitchen so I could make my own meals) feeling perfectly healthy, but doing none of the things I had planned. I wish I could have just tested positive the preceding Friday before I left my house. I could have cancelled/refunded the hotels, rental car, and most of the workshop fees and rescheduled the flights for another time. I don’t think I’ll be attending another workshop that I can’t just drive to.

Deva, you be able to at least get the Covid booster w/o insurance. I’m covered by Medicare, but when I went the other day for my appointment, the pharmacist told me that Medicare had been down for a day-and-a half so she could not give me either the flu or the RSV shots since she was unable to bill Medicare for them. But she said I could get the. Covid booster (which I did) because she could run that one through as ‘uninsured.’ So you might want to check that one out.

I’m glad you’re feeling better! And yes, I think vaccine side effects are preferable to actual COVID. I got my updated vaccine earlier this week, with my flu shot, and the only side effect this time was a sore arm from the flu. But I took it easy the day after, just in case.

Gosh, my experience with covid (fall 2022) was horrid….nothing at all like a cold or even a mild flu. I knew I had it pretty much right away. And that was after 2 shots and a booster.

And the flu I had the following month was the worst I’d ever had in my life. My doctor said it was probably because my immune system was shot after the covid.

    Hello and tgif!

“A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.”

And so, I am wearing a bit of “bad taste” – the new La Vie Est Belle L’Extrait.

I think I may be in the minority that I enjoy LVEB. This new version is said to contain oud but I do not smell it. What this version is, is a less sweet older sister of the original. It is decidedly iris heavy (I pretty much yelled out “CARROTS!”) and is denser than the OG. The “oud” base gives it a warm/woody feel and a somewhat nutty note. I like this.

I detest the original LVB, for some oddness I can’t quite pinpoint. Oud tends to drowned out everything in its path, so I might try this. Thanks for a positive mention…

I’ve noticed that LVEB smells better on others than on me. But I’ve been enjoying the Iris one, and I found an OG at a good price on Ebay. I can wear it too, and am not one to argue with its popularity. As Gaia Fishler once said: “worst trend in perfume: not wearing any.”

Instead I’m celebrating National Coffee Day by sipping some scorching brew and wearing CSP Vanille Café.

Apropos of nothing, why is women’s deodorant twice as expensive as mens? Almost all brands are twice as much as an even LARGER stick of mens..? So, in addition to Vanille Café, I’m smell a bit of Old Spice. Because I’m cheap and I don’t like injustice of any kind, even in the deodorant aisle!

Report back please! I saw a recent tv show about how food producers that add all kinds of crap to foods distributed to the US market, where as the same company, making the same thing for European consumption has just the minimal ingredients. Yogurt is a big one, and oats, too. Apparently, oats sold in the US market have some type of chemical to make the oats “creamier.” Also, the Bill Gates created “Apeel” which food distributers in the US don’t even have to declare to consumers..! Not related to deodorant at all, but there ya go. That’s the way my mind works (or doesn’t work🙃).

I met a man from your neck of the woods last week at Navajo National Monument. I was walking doggo in the campground and noticed a car with Florida plates and a man sitting in a camp chair, so I asked him “What part of Florida are you from?” He said, “I’m actually from Holland, the car is a rental.” Would have liked to chat with him but he was fixing dinner and I didn’t want to intrude. There were mostly non-Americans at that campground, which I thought was interesting.

A man will use the same bar of soap to wash his body, face and hair. ( I’m generalizing)
They can get more money out of us.

Well, they’re not getting more money out of me. I’ll smell like Old Spice until I die, I guess. 🙃

And, at one point, I used Dr Bronners the same way as you say men do with a bar of soap, but it’s not not my favorite…😬

Well, when I was last at Walmart, the most expensive man’s stick deodorant was 3.74 or their abouts. The cheapest women’s stick with a lesser volume was 6.50, so apparently Wal-Mart is not satisfied with a measly 13% difference. Please don’t get me started on feminine hygiene products, birth control, etc. So infuriating 😠

That I can kind of understand because women’s cuts are more intricate than mens, and usually, but not always, women have longer hair. Of course some men have very fancy cuts, but overall, I think women’s cuts, drying, and styling are more time consuming than mens.

I understand that too, but there is no way for me to go in and just have two inches taken off the bottom (super simple) and get the cheaper men’s price. I have actually gone to a men’s barber shop and gotten them to do it but it’s not easy to find ones that will.

That’s true. I got a real haircut at a salon in Oregon right before I left. Wash, simple cut to shape the layers, which already existed, no blow dry, just some curl cream. Start to finish 15-20 minutes. $65! This is why I cut my own hair most of the time. Did I mention I was cheap? 😂 I never thought of going to a barber, but I might try that!

Not on CP, but wearing Zara x Olivia Giacobetti Vapeur Blanche today. My take is that it’s a nice perfume to wear when you want something lighter and closer to the skin with cedar. For $25, I can’t complain in the least.

We’re observing Truth & Reconciliation Day here (officially it’s tomorrow and the holiday in lieu is Monday, but we’re off both days). I do appreciate that I work for an organization that encourages us to take the time to reflect, both today and throughout the year.

I’m wearing Kiss me Intense by Nicolaï.
A wistful scent for a wistful last day of my vacation. It was well spent, however. I got some goat cheese at a very local cheese maker(blessed are the cheese makers) went for a really good lunch in Saint Michel l’Observatoire and spent the afternoon in Banon, which is a small village with a really large book shop. I got a really interesting book called “A la recherche des odeurs perdues” plus a beautiful edition of the Fables de La Fontaine with illustrations by Chagall.

I will be driving back tomorrow, it will be a long day but the first part of it will be driving through the Alps.

I haven’t got a clue, the Lubéron is quite touristy but all the books are in French. They organize cultural things as well. But the area is not densely populated at all and the nearest University town us probably Aix en Provence.

Happy National Coffee Day! (It’s up there among my favorite holidays, along with Bloomsday and International Clash Day.)
I took the day off and have been dawdling, so nothing for me, yet, but I think I’ll dig out my last few hoarded drops of CdG Wood Coffee, would that they would reissue this one.

Went to the post office this morning and sent off all my swapmeet packages. Send offerings to the postal delivery gods…

Glad you’re feeling better after your shots, Robin. I spaced out flu and the C this time around and was completely wrecked by the flu shot, which is very unusual for me. I was also pretty worn out the day after booster #gazillion, which I didn’t realize until I felt *so* much more lively the second day.

SOTD = Diana Vreeland Daringly Different

I was originally going to style the IG photo with something EXTRA but got too lazy looking for EXTRA. Anyway, Daringly Different has a not-in-your-face presence which works since I am meeting a friend and her brother (whom I’ve met over the years) for lunch!

In other news, news. Someone prominent passed away very recently. For the longest time, whenever this person was in the news, there were many negative comments. Today, 98% of the comments were positive. What gives? If I am strongly opinionated enough to leave a previous comment, I would either not comment now or leave a similar comment as my previous one. Off my soapbox.

I intended to wear No. 5 today, but forgot to include it in my travel selection. None of what I brought (Tam Dao, Snowy Owl, and a sample of something called Lotus perfection, or something like that, from some house I don’t remember, but it does smell fabulous) have anything to do with the world Vreeland inhabited, so I am failing the CP but just bought hundreds of dollars of yarn (alpaca, mohair, hand dyed, etc) for Christmas presents. Yay! Happy Fall, everyone.

99 per cent of her “Why Don’t You…?” is extravagant, flighty nonsense for anybody but the ultra wealthy and maybe even for them, but some of the ideas are actually good. “Why don’t you… paint a map of the world on all four walls of your boys’ nursery so they won’t grow up with a provincial point of view?” is a pretty neat thing to do, although I don’t know why you’d limit it to the boys: surely you don’t want the girls to have a provincial point of view either. And she definitely invented/appropriated the French memory board with “…cover a big cork bulletin board in bright pink felt banded with bamboo, and pin with colored thumb-tacks all your various enthusiasms as your life varies from week to week?” (She did love bright pink: “I love that pink — it’s the navy blue of India,” she famously said.)

I don’t have either Opium or No. 5, alas, but I wore something that I feel she would have gravitated towards: vintage(ish) Clinique Aromatics Elixir, a proper chypre with a real kick to it.

I went with vintage Opium EDT for the CP, which is, as expected, so big with just a tiny spray to each arm. I can’t believe people used to spray themselves down with this and then go out to the clubs. I’ll just be sitting here working from home today so not an activity that really lives up to this perfume haha.

Just wanted to update that my dad went home from the hospital on Wednesday and I talked to him for a while yesterday. He’s doing well, all things considered. The hospital staff told him that if he’d waited any longer to come in, the result could have been very different. He had sepsis pneumonia among other factors listed for his hospitalization. So he’s loaded up with prescriptions and has an oxygen tank but is doing much better. He is very stubborn and hates help from anyone, so of course he was telling me how he would have returned to work today if only they’d already delivered him a backup oxygen tank. Sigh. I told him to take this time to rest and don’t work again until his body allows. He unceremoniously retired during the pandemic but has been working part time for the last year plus. His job keeps him on his feet and doing some manual labor, unfortunately. Hoping he will really let himself rest and recover.

Hope you all have a great Friday!

Sepsis causes about 20% of deaths worldwide, although this number is probably higher in actuality as many people die (especially in undeveloped countries) before getting diagnosed and treated. I cannot express how important it is that he FINISHES his antibiotic treatment COMPLETELY, even if feels 100% better. People with underlying heath issues are even more vulnerable. I hope he follows the directions of his doctors, which they give for good reason. Hope he feels better soon!

I’m glad your dad is doing much better. I think that doing light (?) manual labor and standing is better than sitting although he should go back to it until he fully recovers.

And Opium sounds great. I need to pull mine out.

Happy Friday and Diana Vreeland Day!

I’m wearing vintage No 5 Eau de Cologne (it smells SO good!) and thinking of this quote which I think is quite psychologically astute of Vreeland🧐

Couldn’t we replace “prohibition” with “discontinued”?

“Prohibition. Insane idea. Try to keep me from taking a swallow of this tea and I’ll drink the whole pot.”

Thankfully I like it, not as much as my Shalimar Mexique, but I will wear it. I have a lot of iris-centric fragrances so I have to share the love amongst all of them.

Well, it’s complicated (of course!). It’s currently sitting at my mail forwarding service in Florida and ready to be sent to me. The hitch is my credit card number was hacked so that account is frozen. This is the same credit card that is charged for my mail forwarding service. The bank has already sent me a new card, which is also sitting at my mail forwarding service ready to be sent to me. So I will have to switch everything over to my debit card so the mail forwarding company can charge me to send all my mail and packages which will include the Guerlain and the new credit card. Once I get the new credit card, I have to switch everything to that new card…Plus, I’m headed Santa Fe way next, but have no clue how long I’ll be there. I already have mail waiting from me in Taos and a fed-ex package waiting in Santa Fe, because the post office in Taos will not accept any mail from Fed-Ex. Mail and veterinary care are the absolute biggest hassles with this nomad life, I have to admit. Sorry, more than you EVER wanted to know! 🙃

    Hello all!

As glamorously over-the-top as DV, reading one of her books made her pretty unappealing to me. We don’t have to get into why!

Test 3 today but it should be the easiest by far.

I’m in Gio by Giorgio Armani today. I ended up shuffling some perfume around and one of my bottles ended up right in front. Sweettart opening and huge glamazon base. Pretty funny for class.

    Have a great day all!

For me, every day is National Coffee Day, but I suppose I can use it as an excuse to enjoy an extra cup or two today.

I’ve gotten all my freebies sent off now except for the last one. I may need to scrounge up some more packing material. I seem to go through the same cycle over and over; I save up peanuts, bubble wrap, and crumpled paper from packages we receive, then I get to thinking I have too much and I start tossing it, then I need to send off a bunch of packages and I run out. Rinse, repeat.

Re the Damage Poll: do we count bottles ordered but not yet received, or do they count for the quarter in which they actually come into our possession? My only FB purchase for this quarter will almost certainly not be here by Tuesday, so I didn’t know whether to count it this time or next time.

From my very limited stash here in Provence, it had to be Shalimar Tonka, so plush, I’ve fallen in love all over again as I had left it behind last year. I kind of like the idea of being able to wear it only when in France although I will miss it, the bottle will last longer this way. Anyway, I think DV would have approved.

I can hear the wind whistling and it’s about 5C and it’s not going to get much warmer today. I enjoyed watching the Wes Anderson short film The Swan yesterday and it’s depiction of a willow tree, which I associate with spring ( when the leaves open so early compared to other trees). The story about willows coming to NZ is quite interesting. They were said to be introduced by the first French immigrants, who took cuttings from the copious willows growing around Napoleon’s grave. It’s such a good story I haven’t checked it for accuracy. I am wearing JM Willow and Amber.

I don’t know what Diana Vreeland would have made of Aftelier Cuir de Gardenia, but it’s what called to me this morning, so SOTD it is. This is hands-down the sexiest perfume in my collection — a floral that smells like an animal that melts entirely into the skin and smells like *me*, only better.

I read through the Diana Vreeland quotes and this one caught me: “When I arrived in America, I had these very dark red nails which some people objected to, but then some people object to absolutely everything.” I love that. Some people would object to all manner of things in my life that are objectively fabulous. What can you do? Roll your eyes, and carry on being fabulous.

We’ll have to venture out to the supermarket, we’ve got a car so it’s hardly difficult, but I really don’t want to go out the door in this weather. We’re going to have northerly and southerly winds, so at least all the windows will get washed 🙂
I can still smell traces of last night’s Arrakis, from Tiziana Terenzi. It’s a nice spicy scent, but similar to many others, and I’m telling myself I don’t need just because of the link to Dune. I might wear it again today and think some more about not buying it.

I’m halfway CP-compliant in CdG’s Copper – not a conscious reference to a Diana Vreeland quote, not one of Diana Vreeland’s favourites (obviously not, given its release date) and not a scent from Diana Vreeland’s line either. Still, even before I saw today’s picture, I felt quite sure that Diana Vreeland would have been a women continually surrounded by a cloud of smoke. And, even though neither tobacco leaf nor tobacco smoke is listed in the official notes, Copper to me really is the ultimate tobacco scent (of those I know, at least, which, alas, do not include such classics like Tabac Blond), so it somehow seemed to capture the personality I imagined Diana Vreeland to have had.

Happy National Coffee Day!☕️ in honor of my favorite beverage and today’s cp, I’m wearing YSL Black Opium for its coffee note (which I drink strong and black just like the fragrance) and the closest I can come to a Diana Vreeland-appropriate scent. I know who she was but little else about her. Black Opium is said to be the dark and mysterious side of Opium, and although she appears to have been bold and outspoken, I wonder, did she have a dark and mysterious side as well?🤔

Robin, hope you feel much better by the end of today after you rest. Like you, I had my Covid booster on Wednesday. Although, other than a sore arm, I’ve never had a reaction to any of the shots previously (and no symptoms when I did have Covid) I was surprised that I did this time. My arm was extremely sore, didn’t sleep well at all, and woke up yesterday feeling out of sorts. And, of course, we were going to our last WhiteSox game of the season yesterday, the last thing I felt like doing. But I went and it was a good game, but I was uncomfortable throughout, couldn’t eat any of the yummy ballpark food, and the traffic was horrendous on the way home. I crashed when I got home and was asleep by 9, which I can’t remember doing for eons! Today I feel much better with only a slightly sore arm.

We’re making a mini-trip to Milwaukee later this weekend, the highlight of which will be a Peter Gabriel concert. It costs less to stay overnight and see him there than it does just to drive a few miles for a concert ticket in Chicago!

Hoping everyone has a great weekend ahead, with special wishes for all NYC’ers to stay safe from the floods🤞.

No amusing Vreeland quote for me. I’ll just enjoy everyone else’s picks.

SOTD = Opium EdT. My bottle has a manufacturing code from 2006. Not sure if that counts as vintage by now. But I remember now why I wear it infrequently. Love the opening notes, but this stuff will still be going strong tomorrow morning.

For the CP: two perfumes that I happened across whilst tidying up. I chose Angel as SotD, associating it with Ms. Vreeland’s long-lasting presence in popular culture. Later, having seen today’s theme picture, my vintage Habanita caught my eye. I added a tiny spritz – that’s the good stuff – and it does go well with cigarette smoke! I’m behind on comments due to working outside. But the weather is so beautiful here, it’s the best time.

Enjoy the great weather while you have it! Especially this time of year, when things can change in a heartbeat…

2 more hours until I get 3 days off. I took Monday as a personal day to take my stupid car in.
My sotd is Angel Innocent. I was going to wear 24 Faubourg for the cp, but I wasn’t feeling in the mood for it. 24F makes me feel fancy but also like I don’t belong.
