Friday scent of the day 11/13

Posted by Robin on 13 November 2020 291 Comments

Happy Chanel No. 5 Friday! (Yes, it's also Friday the 13th and World Kindness Day.) Our community project for today: wear Chanel No. 5, or a No. 5 flanker, or a fragrance that is related to No. 5 in some way — it does not have to be by Chanel!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am a fail. I have at least two versions of Chanel No. 5 but I had not checked on them, much less worn them, in years, and they are not in good shape. My pathetic bid for a partial point: I'm in Chanel Misia, because Michael Edwards tells us that Misia Sert says she gave Chanel the idea for the perfume that became No. 5.

Reminder: on 11/20, for Bo Derek's birthday, wear a perfume that you would rate an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try (but frequently fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

This is a clever interpretation of the theme, Robin. And you smell lovely.

I am in Chanel No. 5 EDT. Normally this is my favorite concentration, but this week I enjoyed EDP and Parfum more. Maybe the cold weather makes me crave richer and heavier scents.

I don’t have any Chanel No. 5 but I am wearing the answer to the question, “What is Guerlain No. 5?”, and that answer is Vega: a supernova of frosty aldehydes, an armload of flowers so chilly and brittle they might have been dipped in liquid nitrogen, and then slowly imperceptibly the whole thing warms up with soft, creamy sandalwood and vanilla. Maybe this sort of thing is out of date, but I can’t help feeling that if they hadn’t charged $350 for it, they’d be selling enough to still be making it, because it’s really, really good.

I wore a bit of an older bottle of No5 EdT, I got on ebay for one Euro. I don’t enjoy this, just keep it for reference, because it is totally not me. Topped it up with lots of Theo Fennel, which I like a lot. As I am at home watching a scientific congress via livestream, I can skank as much as I like. Made a vegetable beet bourgignon for dinner, a really good recipe from Anna Jones

Woke up in Shalimar Ode a la Vanille this morning. Wearing no 5 EDP this morning. I probably should have gone no 19 or Mitsouko instead because I am wondering on what insanity I am going to have to deal with at work.

Yippie Yippie No.5 L’Eau for me today.
Perfect proportions in all the categories imho. I wold love to try the Parfum one day.
I could easily hit the ‘buy now’ button in my Sephora cart where it sits for the Rouge Event. I could make some stocking stuffers for friends and family, right? I can justify it that way?
    Happy Friday.

SotD: California by Jaclyn Smith. I almost wore No. 22, which is probably more of an aldehydic incense, but decided to wear the an oddball instead. I bought an unopened mini for two or three dollars at flea market and it is not in glorious shape, but after about twenty minutes it is pretty darn good and smells of now restricted spicy carnation and oakmoss along with a wedding bouquet of rose and orange blossom. The vanilla and musk in the base does not remind me of anything functional. Not a masterpiece but fun and big in that pre-ckone era of mass market scents.

I’m about to spray on some No. 5 Eau de Parfum. I love this version, even if (or because?) it has a slightly 1980s feel to it!

Looking back, my gateway to No. 5 was a bit of the the Sensuous Elixir, shared by a kind friend. That was such good stuff.

Happy Friday all! My SOTD is vintage No. 5 extrait, layered with the EDC.
This scent is so transforming and comforting – it reminds me of Christmas in the early 1980s, getting a special Christmas gift from a very special boy. Ahhh, this is glorious stuff. Makes me a tad melancholy (in a good way) for days gone by, beloved family and friends who are no longer with us.

        Ciao ST,

I was living in SF when the de Young opened. What a great time I had at that event!
I also owned the extriat of Coco Md but never repurchased. Next time you are out sniffing, ask your Chanel salesperson to let you smell the Coco Noir body cream in a jar so heavy it could dub as a weapon. It’s very delicious, and I know you love scented body products.

Hmmm..what is the Coco Mademoiselle l’Eau Privée like? Well, its not strong like the EdP..wears close to the skin after the initial burst. Perfect for nighttime when you can’t sleep. I have a sample of this but could see in the future that this could be a nice rotation with the Shalimar body powder

Ohhh, I moved to SF in 1999, too bad we never crossed paths! The de Young is so much fun to visit. Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll definitely ask my Chanel person for a sniff of the body cream. You know me well! I do love a nice scented body product! My favorites back in the day were Magie Noire and Ysatis Body Cream gel. The way you describe the Coco Mademoiselle l’Eau Privée sounds so tempting and it sounds right up my alley..

I had a brief moment of, “Oh, you must be very old!” and then realized you meant the newly-rebuilt de Young. I was living in SF when it reopened also. Remember going to it before renovations as a child. In particular there was a Maxfield Parrish mural that always captivated me. I don’t recollect seeing it there in recent years; it’s either gone elsewhere or I’ve no idea where it’s displayed.

I’d also like to go to the Frida exhibit. I think it’s going through Spring?

        Ciao IrisJasmine-

I didn’t really like the Coco Noir EdP, the pure parfum is still very gourmand, but not that sweet on me. Others have commented that is has a richer violet/iris notes compared to the EdP and sandalwood as well. I would sniff it out and do report back when you do.

I chose what so many others have just mentioned: Chanel No 22 in the current EdP version, of which I got myself a sample in order to finally understand what those aldehydes are actually about. And even if today is the first time I try it, I actually like it quite well. So I can only wonder what the extrait would smell like …

I’m so glad it’s Friday. I wore vintage Coco yesterday – never got to post. And today, I’m in Chanel No. 5 extrait that a friend bought for me a few years ago in France. I’m going to add a spritz of the No. 5 L’eau I bought this summer – I’m curious to compare the two together as I never have!

Lol – y’all are excited about my vintage Coco. I agree, it’s lovely. But all I have are two 1.5 ml samples from a generous NST poster, not a bottle. However, I thoroughly enjoy my samples – even a dab goes a long way.

We really should have regular Chanel days — just picture the cloud of elegance we’re broadcasting across the world! I couldn’t find my sample of Eau Premiere so I’m in a *very* vintage sample of the No. 5 EDP. It’s probably 20 years old, so who knows how ‘off’ it might be at this point — I’m not a No. 5 afficionado. But it smells quite good and has a warm, rosy depth to it that I didn’t remember.

I agree! We could rule the world with No.19 alone! let’s pick the 19th of a month, hopefully a Friday and do it!
      A new CP perhaps?
      We can do a RC31, No.22, No.18 each on a different month.

Still not in Chanel although I own a full bottle of Eau Première and have a few samples of No.5 EdP and EdT.
I’m in Amouage Gold which takes the aldehydic rose jasmine champagne theme a little further still.
I admire No.5 and will probably get a small bottle of extrait at some point. Gold is similar but this one makes me feel giddy and happy with its opulence, elegance and sheer beauty. It was the first Amouage I ever bought and it is still my absolute favourite from the line. It makes me wish I could have thanked Guy Robert in person for the creation of this gem.

I’m failing the CP too. I have a litany of excuses:

    1. No 5 is my MIL’s signature scent so I can’t wear it. Though to be fair, I can wear No 5 L’eau and No 5 Eau Premiere and No 5 gold-sparkly-stuff. All of which I own. (An aside: MIL’s emergency surgery was successful. She’s now in a rehab facility, which does not allow visitors, so our visit to NJ is on hold.)

    2. Which brings me to excuse number 2: all my No 5’s are still in the basement since I haven’t yet swapped my summer for winter fumes (it was 80 degrees out just a week ago!)

    3. And my final excuse: SO BUSY with retirement! Haven’t had time this week to do the seasonal perfume swap. Maybe this weekend???

I did sample a No 5 cousin this week though: Guerlain Liu. Nice, but I think I can survive without it.

    SotD = No. 5 EdP

Oh, how I adore this perfume. Just one spritz down the front of my blouse wafts all day, or I walk though a cloud of a few sprays in the air. It’s heavenly.
In truth I can’t wear No. 5 all that often, I have to be in the mood for it. It’s perfectly comforting this time of year when it’s cold outdoors and cozy to be at home so much of the time.

    Funny No. 5 stories:

A new bottle of the parfum came my way a few years ago, but I had to pass it on to a fragrance friend. The parfum was so faint to my nose that I could hardly smell it, even after weeks of trying! Maybe I was noseblind from another scent. Or perhaps that iteration of the parfum had been tweaked with a heavy musk molecule that blocked out the rest of the scent for me.

The other day I saw Hugh Grant interviewed by Steven Colbert. Speaking about his (temporary) loss of smell due to covid19, he said he was so desperate to smell something he sprayed his wife’s No. 5 directly into his face. Couldn’t smell a thing. So strange.

NSTers, be safe and be fragrant! Perfumed hugs to everyone. :)

Hi tiffanie – I have to be in the mood for No. 5 as well. It’s not an every day scent for me – I don’t know why. Also to your point about the parfum – I find mine fairly quiet for sure. I prefer it quiet so I’m okay with that. My 5 L’eau on the other wrist has overtaken the parfum and usually lasts all day on me, although I hear that’s not true for others.

Thank you for sharing your parfum experience. I will try it again from time to time, I can’t resist it when I see it. I have a bit of vintage parfum that is much stronger than the modern ones I’ve sniffed, but it is much quieter than the EdP.

L’eau is super strength on me. too! ;)

So, I go nose blind fairly easily…and I may not have a great sense of smell more generally. My mom at some point took out some long hoarded Parfum. I can’t remember if it was number 5 AND Joy or just one of them – but it smelled really weak to both of us. If you put you nose right to your wrist you could smell (or imagine you were smelling) something marvellously rich and rounded but only with it almost right up against your nose. Perhaps it had lost its smell over time. Generally I have not had good experience with extraits.

thanks, Merlin, that’s good to know. I do wonder if extrait formulations have some “extra big” heavy scent molecules (musks or something) that can overwhelm our noses.

Similarly, I love some of the Narciso perfumes but can only smell them for a few minutes. Then I’m totally noseblind, sometimes for a few days.

My Chanel No.5 body oil is a distant memory–and my edt of the perfume even more distant. I considered wearing White Linen, for the aldehydes in common, but didn’t have it in me.

So, instead I went with a generous dollop of Coco body lotion on my hands, and a liberal application of Paris Venise everywhere else, on the theory that two Chanels that are nothing like No. 5–errr two negatives equal a positive–for Chanel No. 5.

Now, that is a beautiful mind at work on perfume math.

    Bowing.

I’m also a member of the Gotta-To-Be-In-The-Mood-for-No.-5 group. I’ve tried with No 5, but it’s not something I regularly crave anymore. Before I started collecting fragrances, I greatly enjoyed a bottle of the No. 5 cologne concentration. These days, I have a column bottle of Premiere, and a bottle of the Elixir (which doesn’t smell like much of anything). I sprayed on Premiere a little bit ago, and couldn’t do it, too soapy. After washing it off, I have to say the remnants smell really good!

Right now, I’m wearing tiny dabs of a variety of things, chasing small shots of joy.

    Have a good day, y’all!

I have full bottles of No 5 L’eau and the EDP, but the edp won out today. I think I’m usually more impressed by the edp but find more occasions to wear l’eau. I’ve worn l’eau on job interviews, to important meetings, to funerals, and to weddings—basically any time I want to smell polished but not bother anyone.

A couple of months ago, at the start of winter, i began putting out an apple each evening for a wobegon blackbird with a droopy wing that I was worried about. She was always the last bird of night…and is still coming to feed ( and I am pretty certain now that she was a juvenile moulting her primary wing feathers). Anyway, blackbirds love apple and so I get about 8 or so birds visiting ( such wonderful birds, especially at dawn) . This past week a male has been turning up with a fledgling. The young bird is quite speckled, the size of the adult and gormless. It sits on the rail like a feathered deflated balloon. The male has an incredibly difficult task. It has to peack, peck, peck, at the apple until its beak is spilling over with apple flesh, all the whike trying to keep the other blackbirds and starlings out of the way. It then hops along the rail. The juvenike blob opens its beak and the male inserts the apple. Then the male returns to the apple, fights off the other birds and repeats. It is exhausting just watching…imagine trying to feed your kids with one hand while fending off the neighbours. Another green day here, so lush and easy on the eye. Wearing Cristalle.

Gosh, love the name of those birds! I had my own bird adventure yesterday too. I wish I could have got a better picture–a great horned owl was roosting in our back yard terrifying our small, feisty orange tabby. I heard him hissing like mad, and went to investigate. He was puffed up to twice his size, and his pupils were huge black discs. When the owl took off, from tip to tip her wingspan was about 5 feet and her flight completely soundless.

I enjoyed that little tale; thanks for sharing. I was never much of a bird watcher, but now that I’m working from home everyday, and barely going anywhere when I’m not working, I’ve found a new pastime in watching the local wildlife. I just didn’t pay as much attention before.

I forgot about the community project but I’ve been using the Frederic Malle samples my sister sent me for my birthday all week. Today is Musc Ravageur, which is less musk and more a gorgeous amber. Yesterday was Portrait of a Lady, which could be worn just about anywhere and for any occasion, and before that Carnal Flower, the only tuberose fragrance I’ve ever loved. It is almost absurdly beautiful.

I am so TGIF today!! I love many Chanel’s (looking at you Cristalle), but not No. 5 so much. So, I am wearing the only version that I can wear and enjoy, No. 5 L’eau….soft and lovely.

I’m not a big fan of aldehydic perfumes, I so wanted to like Amouage Gold, but it just didn’t work for me. Inspired by the thought of Amouage, I might spray a little Beloved later.

So I began by playing, with Pour Monsieur which is at least Chanel. Later I saw my little decant of Amouage Fate was almost gone so I tried for some last dabs and got some talc with a bit of an incense nuance to it. And then I acted true to my wholly contrarian heart and lead a full frontal rebellion against all forms of elegance and good taste by spritzing myself with Snow Fairy! ?‍♀️ ????‍♀️

SOTD = No. 5 EDP, this bottle is maybe 7 years old. I always own more Guerlain perfumes than any other house, but I suspect I have used up more bottles of Chanel No. 5 than any other perfume in my collection – I tried to count how many bottles I have had, but that is lost in the sands of time. Right now I have this half full 30 ml bottle of the EDP and a few drops of Parfum in a travel spray, which I am saving for New Year’s Eve. :-) I used to wear this a lot when I was working as a therapist, not so much now, but it is a cornerstone of my collection. It agrees with my chemistry so well. Right now it is mostly iris, with a little sweet suedeish amber base. Good to revisit old friends. I love these community projects!

Robin, so sorry about your vintage Chanels. ? Even if I hardly ever wear something, it’s always a disappointment to find it’s gone off. Boo-boo.

I used to wear No. 5 quite a bit when I was younger, but I got out of the habit somehow. Today, I am feeling elegant in a dab of the vintage perfume I have, which is still lovely. I will always have a soft spot for Chanel No. 5, since it was the first perfume gift I ever received (at age 11.) I still feel like a grown-up when I wear it, lol!

You can buy a pair of the earrings they use to pierce ears, with the sharp ponts, and jam them back in to reopen the holes. But if your ears have been pierced for decades, it’s likely the holes are not really shut.

Coincidentally I also had to do that as my piercings (2nd holes) seemed to have closed up; mind you it’s been years since I put earrings in there.

I was successful with one; almost got the 2nd one done but will try again in a day or 2. I just used a stud earring which was sanitized! Good luck!!

Usually No. 5 and I don’t get along at all. However, I have been down the perfumed rabbit hole long enough to know “Never say never.”

SOTD = Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere EdT, from the sample stash. It’s a pretty floral and musk scent on me that is quietly present for 8 hours and counting. Guess I have to smell the EdP version of it while I still have some EdT to compare it to…

I’m joining today’s project in Chanel No. 5 edp from a sample. It almost feels like heresy to say, but it does nothing for me. I don’t care for it but I don’t hate it either. I haven’t tried it in awhile but I still have the same reaction to it as I always have. I’m not much of a Chanel fan, anyway, although I do like Coco, Bois des Iles, Coromandel, and LaPausa and do wear these occasionally. But reading that Robin and several of you are not fans either makes me feel ok about saying that.

And, Robin, I wanted to wish you belated birthday wishes. ???! I hope that the year ahead is a happy and healthy one for you, and thank you for providing this special corner of the world for us.?

Self-care for me today: a soak in the hot tub under glorious ? and a trip to the library to pick up the newest Louise Penny book I’ve been waiting a month for! I’m so looking forward to Inspector Gamache taking me away from the election-that-should-have-been-over-but-never-seems-to-end and the Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations increasing dramatically here.

Hoping this weekend will provide a nice escape from the cares of the world today for all NST’ers, too!

As of now, both the City of Chicago and the entire state of Illinois are under a Stay at Home ‘advisory.’ Everyone is ‘encouraged’ to stay home except for work, school, grocery/pharmacy, essential errands only. Any gathering for events like weddings, funerals, etc., are limited to 10 people. Restaurants are closed for indoor dining. It’s clear we are on the cusp of an ‘order,’ which I would not be surprised to hear soon. Chicago’s Mayor has already said if you have plans to travel for Thanksgiving or have people over who don’t live in your household, cancel them. The City’s Health director said she is more concerned now than she was in March. Pretty ominous stuff. Not sure about my Thanksgiving plans, was just going to have a very small gathering, may just go virtual now.

Chanel No. 5 has never been my bag. I tried No. 22 many years ago, but it was too ladylike for me. Im a No. 19 girl, even though I don’t own it right now.

But…I stole a decant of L’Eau Premiere from my sister (who vastly prefers original No. 5 and wears nothing else). And I do like it. It works on me.

Not even close to the CP – I’m wearing PHI Une Rose de Kandahar. But No. 5 is my mom’s signature scent and it makes me happy to think that she has so many great-smelling, fabulous scent twins today.

#5 was my mother’s signature for decades, too. Until I came along. ?

SOTD: Mishmash of samples from Eau d’Italie. Does it count if I open #5 and sniff it?

I appreciate all of the kind thoughts yesterday. No neurologists will see new patients, emergency or not, until months out. Covid is a huge worry, but they won’t do tele-health until they have their first consultation.

Going for a walk and buying a perfume. Because.
Many hugs back to the NST community.

        Yes!
I snagged a tester of Paestum Rose, which is being discontinued.
And I plan on the Jasmine Leather or Wonder of You.
These were pretty unique to me.

Have to resniff, but my emotions always let me justify a purchase.

Walking with my ? somehow makes everything better, too.

Oh! That’s a shame about Paestum Rose being d/c’ed. Good timing on your part.

They’re discontinuing Paestum Rose?? I still have probably half of a bottle but now I’m thinking I’d better try to get another. One of those perfumes for me that evokes a particular time and place (actually, two times and places).

And I do hope you get to see a neurologist soon! But Paestum Rose is a lovely way to deal with the search!

Thank you, Sistine. That Paestum ? was my first purchase, because it is not a typical rose and, I got a tester, which means cheaper, and a discount, which makes a beautiful cheap addition to the collection!

Very happy to share this with people. I got a great deal and I won’t ever use 100mls.

        So kind, you are.

Chanel EDP today, which was then followed by some Azemour and then vintage Jolie Madame.

It’s been windy, rainy and cold all day. Our house is terribly energy inefficient and super expensive to heat. So, cold. I’m wearing two pairs of wool socks. Very glad to be done with work for the day, now curled up in bed with a glass of wine and about to crack open a trashy novel I won’t confess to reading.

I’m in the middle of moving, so my perfume stash is buried at the bottom of some box, but IF I had it out I would have worn my sample of No. 5 Eau Premiere! Hope I can catch the next CP and be unpacked by then -__-

I did something I rarely do, which is a single spritz of my late mother’s vintage No. 5 EDT. You know, I may need to get my own. I always think of No. 5 as “her” Chanel, but sniffing my wrists today — it is a masterpiece. So unique, so lovely, so recognizable. I will always think of No. 22 as “my” Chanel, since it was my first and always, and I love No. 19 and Cristalle, but my oh my, that No. 5.

Which version of No. 5 would you get as “yours”? The EdT? Or something else?

I may have to get the No. 5 EDT, out of nostalgia for my late mother. I have and love No. 5 Eau Premiere. Also No. 5 L’Eau (in the fancy red bottle, love that so much!) but I think of that as more suitable for my daughters (who are in their 20s). I gave a second red bottle of it to my oldest. I think Eau Premiere may be “my” No. 5. What about you?

Usually I give No. 5 a wide berth. All the versions I have come across in department stores like Macy’s, etc. are very soapy to me. I just figured it wasn’t my thing. Then I got a small dabber sample of Eau Premiere EdT when decanters were still allowed to sell Chanel samples. I was pleasantly surprised by that one.

Late to the party, but want to log in SotD: Chanel No. 5 epd. I think this one is a ’90’s/early 2000’s but not sure. Aldehydes and sandalwood. I respect and enjoy it, but it (so far) just is not a love. Finished the day in my dear Estee Super. Have a good weekend all!

    Very belatedly…

My Thursday bedtime fragrance was Chanel Paris-Riviera. :) For a moment there was a note that didn’t seem like something restful at all, and then it was all right to relax to. But I figure I did the actual project on Thursday during the day. :)
