Thursday scent of the day 5/14

Posted by Robin on 14 May 2020 287 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! (And a quick reminder: the swapmeet is coming up on Saturday.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Parfum d'Empire Azemour Les Orangers, from new wave summer colognes.

Reminder: 5/15 is the International Day of Families. Name your favorite fragrance family, and wear one or more fragrances in that family, OR, make up your own fragrance family (like, say, wood pudding), define it for us, and wear the best example of that family.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

e` sempre cosi´all’inizio però diventa più facile pronto. è vero che tu impari più degli sbagli che l’altri. lo faccio ancora e spesso quando smetto di praticare.

Will you publish your week in advance? I’d love to see the list.
I have a few other samples that I need to pull out as they may evaporate soon if I don’t: MPG Cuir Fetiche, and a small few drops of SL Cuir Mauresque to be exact.
I just got lost in my closet and sniffed like 20 scents that I really missssssssed, so now in overload but in a happy state of confusion like the rest of us probably??.

Well I haven’t been planning each day, just pulling from the pile throughout the day…

But here’s still in the queue of things that are clearly leather or have a leather supporting note:

St. Clair Gardener’ Glove (sample just arrived!), Hermes Kelly Caleche, Hermes Cuir d’Ange, ELDO Vierges et Toreros, ELDO Charogne, Hiram Greene Hyde (pulled it out of the giveaway pile, distinctly didn’t like it, but in the interests of expanding my perceptions thought I should try again), Aftel Cuir de Gardenia (another one plucked from discard pile), Dzongkha, Ineke Field Notes From Paris, Ineke Evening Edged in Gold, Ferragamo Leather Rose, and finally the following Memo Leathers: Irish, Italian, Russian and Moroccan (though I did the last earlier in the week).

This will probably bleed into next week…

          Completed thus far:

MONDAY: Chanel Cuir de Russie, Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours, Memo Moroccan Leather
TUESDAY: Knize Ten, J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin Leder 6, Molinard Cuir, ELDO Tom of Finland, Beaufort London Iron Duke
WEDNESDAY: Bottega Veneta Bottega Veneta, Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours, Strange Invisible Perfumes Black Rosette, Frederic Malle Rose & Cuir
THURSDAY: Demeter Russian Leather, Robert Piguet Bandit EDT and EDP, L’Artisan Dzing!, Histoires de Parfum 1740

Can’t believe I accumulated so many leather samples and bottles!

I’ll have to try the two you mentioned.

I am obsessed with Italian Leather! It’s sooo sooo good!
I also liked Maroccan Leather and Russian Leather was interesting as well.

They also just launched Ocean Leather, which seems odd but I’m curious.

It’s a very cool fragrance name, which is why I originally even looked at the bottle. I’m not expert enough to distinguish between fig leaf and other greenery. I can say that it’s very leafy smelling, although that might be the basil. Then there is also the fig. So leafy + figgy.

For out of sync today, I’m wearing Salome while planning a day of work-from-home, yoga, and baking brownies. I’ve put on fully half of my 1 mL sample. My kid said she liked it! I was shocked. Then she sneezed and said it was a little strong. This is way more Salome then I would ever wear at one application, and certainly not for doing yoga.

It is still in production, I just checked Guerlain dot com. It was a marvelous liner, it didn’t irritate my eyes and washed off easily. I have it in the Bleu, Black, and Mirage (taupe brown).

It is a cool sunny day and I am happy in a little splash of Demeter Honey, the simplified, inoffensive (or at least less offensive, I hope) version of the polarizing Serge Lutens Miel de Bois. I like Honey a lot: it seems like the perfect balance of sweet (lots), sourish/astringent (just enough), and floral (I mean, honey *is* made of flowers). No lasting power, but we expect this of the Demeters.

DAMMIT I meant to post this and then I was going to comment on your post and this is what happens. Ugh. Sorry.

What I was going to say is that I am very envious of your lilacs, because we usually get them at the very end of May but it’s been so cool/cold that I can’t see having them before mid-June: none of the trees have leaves on them let, let alone flower buds.

You will get them, be patient. I love lilacs too, and I am sorry that their blooming period is so short.
I love May because of blooming lilacs and horse chestnuts. The latter do not smell much, but look very majestic.

“Smells like California” week continues with Le Labo’s Musc 25 – the Los Angeles city exclusive. I love this scent, and it’s my “get focused and get bleep done” scent. This will be very useful this afternoon, when I have a 4 hour window to pack up my entire classroom. (My district believes this is ample time. I believe my district has never actually packed up a classroom, especially one that was abandoned on a regular old Friday afternoon in March.)

    Hello! :)

Early this morning, I put a little spritz from my sample of Acqua di Parma Colonia Mirra on my arms. I have to wash it off, since my folks can’t deal with that combination of herbs and spices, and it’s a little strong for me right now, too. But it’s truly very, very nice for what it is. :)

I seem to have an incense theme this week. It’s not my favorite family of fragrances. That’s roses. But there are certainly some really fine incense perfumes and colognes out there. :)

Also, I meant to say that I liked the wisteria picture. I’m bummed out that I won’t be able to see the wisteria and peonies at Longwood Gardens, but there’s some wisteria blooming around the area in general. From the road, it can be hard to tell which wisteria plants were planted deliberately, and which ones have struck out on their own. There’s wisteria blooming by the cemetery where artist Horace Pippin is buried. I don’t know if those vines escaped from a garden or were originally part of the landscaping, but it’s pretty there.

    I just put on
    Mon Guerlain
    Edp

    From a sample.
I dont know what it is, but it makes me a little queasy ?

People call this is a subtle, expensive, ‘not too sweet’ and romantic scent…(see fragrantica)

Wahhaha are they kidding? Its a huge generic vanilla bomb on my skin. I smell like I fell into a vat of cheap sugar coated ice cream, and I can hardly smell lavender (or anything else for that matter). ?

I bet its chemistry, my skin sometimes does weird stuff to vanilla based scents.

But Im not going to scrub it off…lets see how this develops and if I can get anything romantic from it in the drydown ?

I have a to finish something today for work. will check in later!

After one hour it gets more quiet. Phew.
I think its more weareable now. But so far….nothing magical ? i still have a hard time smelling anything other than vanilla and cinnamon ?

I asked my husband, he said it smells like soap (i bet its the lavender) with butterscotch ?
His verdict: its not bad but would not buy it.

        ?

I must admit, After 3 hours i start to warm.up to it. But i don’t think i need to relive that opening.

Sometimes I wish i was able to tolerate sweetness more. i feel like i am missing out on a whole genre….

Well, I struggle with wood puddings myself. I can just about manage Bois des Iles, but a lot of Serges are out. Certain woody notes just make me queasy, although the winner in that department is Teint de Neige. Even the thought of it makes me feel unwell ;)

Teint de Neige was a big NO. I think this perfume has quote a following because they developed it into a range of scented products
But its one of the few scents that i cannot tolerate at all. ?

And I understand your feelings toward some Serges. I had the same (for example chypre rouge, santal majuscule….they dont work for me at all.)

          ?

I often want to try perfumes on other people.
Sometimes stuff that doesnt work for me smells nice on someone else.
And when you smell stuff a few meter awa, the experience can be different as well.

I got expensive honey-lavender-vanilla ice cream from Mon Guerlain EdP… the kind of ice cream hand cranked by artisans in very small batches. It is sweet-ish on me, but not a sugar bomb. ??

I had lavender vanilla ice cream on a holiday once.. (it was in the Provence…. Of course ?. In a very touristy town). It was pretty good.

I did not pick up much lavender in Mon Guerlain ?
        My husband did though.

You know, I have no clue. Someone more perfume learned than me might be able to answer that. I bought a bottle several years ago and ended up swapping it, but I do remember the label said “Bronze Goddess” Eau Fraiche. The one I have now (yes, I missed it and bought another bottle recently) is a new bottle this year, perfume and label say the same thing. Are you in the US? I’m happy to send you some of you like.

Leather week continues with Demeter Russian Leather plus Robert Piguet Bandit (both EDT and EDP, different arms).

The Fragrantica reviews for Bandit are some of the most dramatic, hilarious stuff I’ve read in a while. Apparently I turned into a violent, vulgar, criminal, leather-wearing, 12-pack a day prostitute when I spritzed myself this morning. Either that, or I’m someone’s stale grandpa. One began: “ A bloodthirsty galbanum wearing a Friday the 13th leather goaltender mask…”

Finished yesterday with sampling SIP Black Rosette and FM Rose & Cuir. I like Black Rosette, it’s odd and possibly off-putting for some (one review called it a “punk rose”, and I agree). Once again I ask myself: why do I buy samples of ridiculously priced scents? $200 for 50ml ($70 for 15) is not going to happen.

Black Rosette’s punk vibe made me think of Rose & Cuir, which doesn’t feel punk but I had wanted it to, when it came out, based on the name and hype. It’s nice enough, but back in the giveaway pile it goes. All fresh geranium and not very interesting to my nose.

MONDAY: Chanel Cuir de Russie, Naomi Goodsir Cuir Velours, Memo Moroccan Leather
TUESDAY: Knize Ten, J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin Leder 6, Molinard Cuir, ELDO Tom of Finland, Beaufort London Iron Duke
WEDNESDAY: Bottega Veneta Bottega Veneta, Bottega Veneta Eau de Velours, Strange Invisible Perfumes Black Rosette, Frederick Malle Rose & Cuir

My favorites thus far in the leather realm: Chanel Cuir de Russie, Cuir de Lancôme, Dzing!, Bandit EDP, Field Notes From Paris, BV Bottega Veneta, Molinard Cuir.

That’s a pretty long list so maybe you’re right and there’s no favorite!

I’ve also always had the “I need a bottle of Knize Ten” thought in the back of my head, but it didn’t knock my socks off this week. I have a couple samples to drain first, then we’ll see.

Interesting! Field Notes does not read like a leather on my skin. I get more of the sweet tobacco and orange blossom vibe. Evening Edged in Gold is more leather….smooth suede kind. And I LOVE Bottega Venetta and a few of the flankers I tried.

Well I should clarify: been a while since I’ve worn Field Notes and I pulled it for this week because of the listed leather note… not sure how much leather I get out of it either, but retrying it during this week of leather focus and I think I’ll do better at picking out out!

        • SheriG says:
          14 May 2020 at 7:11 pm

Like CM8, I didn’t get leather from Field Notes either – I mostly got cigarettes and bubble gum ground into asphalt. Not that that’s necessarily bad! :D And I think I still have some Evening Edged in Gold – I don’t remember getting a lot of leather from it, but should try it again, I guess.

I didn’t realize there was leather in that one, been a while since I sampled it, but now it’s added to the pile for the week. I really like Ineke. I have probably 5 bottles of hers, but not that one. Yet. This addiction is a dangerous thing.

Testing. Testing. Perfume samples that is! I normally will wear just about the entire sample thinking that if I like this at foghorn strength, I like it and Thunk! I ordered a sample of St. Clair Scents Gardeners Glove. My conclusions are that I do not really like leather fragrances very much(except for Papillon Anubis) there was a note that just not smell good on my skin. Almost that nuclear, raspy cedar smell I associate with a certain group of large molecules. Thunk! And money saved.

I was able to get milk n eggs delivered yesterday, yay on that.

Random sample sotd is…Tauer Les Annees 25, which smells like a lemony vanilla.. not bad I guess. Maybe even pleasant. I haven’t worn a Tauer in years. I simply hated Tauer scents when I first sampled some years ago, I believe I gave all of them away. But I am open minded to revisit a line. A cozy citrus, kinda like it. A bit musky though.

Rose-scented body lotion topped with Idylle Love Blossom. Floral family. Green florals were my first love. I strayed fir awhile, but have renewed that relationship.

Wish me luck. I’m going to try baking a raspberry cake. (I may add some strawberries.) Not that I need it. Trying to get serious again with my meal tracking and sugar reduction. I missed my waistline, which disappeared and then came back while on WW. I don’t want to lose it again. But I’d rather have a small home-baked treat than candy or other sweets.

I find store bought cakes are typically way too sweet. I want less sweet but more flavors and creative flavors.

Alas, baking for a house of two usually means too much cake, even if I use 6” pans, baking less than that hardly seems worth the effort.

Conclusion: no cake, but a really pricy piece of great chocolate!

What gorgeous photos you’ve been posting this week, Robin!

I’m in Iris Prima today, which works nicely with the dreary weather we’ve been having this week. Yesterday was so gloomy we didn’t even have Pergola Drinkies (this has become a daily staple in our household, the semi-strict division between the workday and personal evening time).

I know I am lucky to still have my job, but I’ve got a rant. I am DROWNING in meetings and getting really angry about it. I had 7.5 h of meetings scheduled for yesterday (though I got so angry in the evening that I just didn’t attend the last 2.5 h of meetings, consequences be damned). Last night at 10:36pm, a meeting was called for this morning at 8am. I didn’t see the meeting request until this morning at 7:30am, and I had work to do for my 9am meeting, so I made the executive decision to not attend. Something has to change. This is unsustainable.

Ha! Responded to your original comment before I read this follow up. EXACTLY this. Are some people uncomfortable with writing? Or they want to hide behind some group consensus formed during a meeting? I seriously don’t get it.

Meetings are appropriate for some activities and goals, but not all communication.

I did actually bring it up in a 1:1 on Monday (probably my second 1:1 in 2020?) and was promised that things would change, but it hasn’t changed yet….

I don’t understand why the number of meetings would need to increase, unless there nature of the work really changed? Goofy.

For me, it’s not very different pre- versus post-COVID, but perhaps because I’ve always felt the need to push back against unnecessary meetings. Some people want to call a meeting of 4-6 people for something that’s a 2 sentence question that needs to be answered by one person. Drives me nuts.

      7.5 hours is crazy.

      Horrible.
No one can ever be productive that way. (Unless the rest of the week is meeting-free)

Just saw your comment yesterday about Twisted Lily. What is Eden perfumes? Do you know? A quicky check on google brought up an all natural perfumery in the UK that makes dupes of popular fragrances such as Aventis and Daisy and “Shelimers.”

I don’t know if mine is BWF’s actually, but I do own loads of them. I think florals in general make up the largest part of my collection. So I kind of chose the white ones because I was dying to wear my La Haie on Monday.

Giverny in Bloom by DSH, which would be in the category of Spring Florals which are my favorite and why I made it up.

Robin, you smell great! I’m waiting for warmer weather to break out my Azemour, but it’s a summer standard. Today is mild and grey and green, barely sprinkling now and then, with loads of gentle humidity and birdsong in the air and the roses hanging heavy with last night’s raindrops. I’m in Wet Garden and I fit right in.

Hello all. My SOTD is SL Vitriol d’oeillet, continuing my theme/family of SL perfumes that are NOT super sweet and stewed fruit-y. I love this one a lot with the very spicy carnation smell. Lots of nutmeg and clove, but no fruit. I’ve always loved dianthus flowers in general–including also pinks and Sweet Williams (one of my favourites). I feel kind of dramatic but pretty in this. I’m watching an intrepid bluejay who first checked out the sleeping cats on my porch and decided it was safe to fly to the feeder (which hangs in the air above them). Very muggy and warm day and I may not get in my usual walk because of the weather. I met up with a new walking partner yesterday at 7 and we had a very long walk (it turned into four miles!). That was pleasant just walking and talking, but we wore masks and I found that made the exercising quite difficult. So I might in the end prefer walking alone. We’ll see.

Day 4 of chypre florals. I’m running low on options and saving my favorite for tomorrow. Turns out alot of what I thought I had in this category falls into other families. Shows what I know!
Sotd is Gucci by Gucci, square brown bottle. I had thought this was a fruity chypre, but wrong again, lol.

Oh but I don’t always agree with Fragrantica for e.g. I get a bit confused with all the Guccis by Gucci and if you smell fruit on a chypre base, then It’s a fruity chypre. Have you ever tried vintage, no cumin, Rochas Femme?

Robin, I love that link to the new wave summer colognes! I’ve yet to try the Mistral Patchouli, because reviews label it as a clean patchouli, now I am itching to try it.
Another summer citrus gem I’ll try to find later. Not a classic, but one I actually stopped someone to ask them what they were wearing and bought right away.

SOTD: Blind buy? Beguiled, I have the travel spray to try. I really hope I love it. I have a brand new, still in wrapping Beguiled big one. Of course, I just found this yesterday, from when it first came out. Please tell me I will love it.

Thank you everyone for the love!!! I got inspired to make a scented cocktail after dinner:

      The Endless Spring Quarantini
      •juice of ½ lime
      • 1Tbsp honey
      • 1 tsp orange blossom water
      • 1oz sake
      • 1oz gin (I used an elderflower, seaweed and bee pollen one made in Edinburgh last summer) • ½ tsp nutritional pollen
      • ice

Put all ingredients in your neglected travel coffee mug and shake vigorously. Pour into any cocktail glass you have. Enjoy!

I think my favourite fragrance family would be best described as Goldilocks – perfumes that are just right for me! There are are a few notes that I don’t like, but other than that I like all sorts of things :)
I’ve got floral, incense, chypre, spicy, fruity – even the notes I generally don’t like are sometimes fine.
Today, I’m going to try some Givenchy miniatures passed on by a friend. Her late mother bought a travel set years ago. I don’t know how old it is, nor how well the perfumes have lasted, but the bottles are delightful.

Given how badly my brother’s industry is doing, I’m not sure if he can find a job. Half the people he worked with were also axed. And given that this is COVID related, it very well could have been the soonest that said company could have notified. Right now, it’s a coin toss if some of those organizations will survive.

Notice is not mandated at the federal level except when it meets certain criteria (# of employees over what timeframe and whether or not it’s a plant closure, etc.). States also have different rules. This is why it’s usually full employment for lawyers ?

I’m wearing Lush What would love do from the solid perfume floating around in my bag. I diluted it with some hand sanitizer alcohol spray (lavender and eucalyptus scented). Nice! Cut the sweetness down a notch.
I’m hoping tomorrow is my last day of the dreadful subway commuting. We should be set up to work from home on Monday, I pray (until the next surge hits and we’re yanked back out again?).

Are you still having to do bedside nursing! Or are you back in your department office? I can’t even imagine your commute. I’m so sorry and hope you get to WAH ASAP.

We had a PUI on our unit (a “clean” post cardiac sx unit!) and there was ZERO N95’s, zero signage on the door other than contact/droplet precautions. The nurse who had the patient was going in and out with a cheap surgical mask, and when I asked her about it, her response was “I already had it!” Although never tested, she’s convinced she has had it, and I guess the rest of can be dammed for all she cares! One of the many things I talked to my recruiter about, and apparently she’s ( my recruiter) not happy with me because she unfollowed me on Instagram ??

How sophomoric of your recruiter! And how does the covidiot nurse know she won’t get it again?

I asked the covidiot the exact same thing! We went around until she didn’t have an answer for me, then she walked away in a huff. ??‍♀️

And the recruiter thing is funny. People never cease to amaze me, especially during stressful times. We are at an impasse because I refuse to be on call for the entire hospital, which she asserts I am, although it is not in my contract. ??‍♀️

I’m winning friends and influencing people all over the place! ?

Still in my office hopefully for only 1 more day.
I have to say that our facility acts the same as that nurse on the presumed negative patient unit. A nurse aid died last week on a unit on such a unit that had a covid breakout. They closed the unit and furloughed the staff. Now they’re offering testing to asymptomatic staff, but STILL not mandating wearing N95s and most people don’t even though they are offering them to staff! All you can do is just protect yourself, with your own supplies if need be. Crazy.

Talc de Iunx, from a sample.

It’s hard to describe this fragrance. Had I smelled it without knowing the name, I believe I would have called to mind not talcum powder but rather an elegant oval of the most luxurious unscented soap.

It has a softness that reminds me of cotton velvet. It is warm rather than cool, so that it blends with the skin.

It’s a very subtle, refined, and appealing scent.

Well, as mentioned before, I can hardly pick a favorite fragrance family, so I’m going to finish out the week in ONE of my favorite families.

I have a serious love for anything beachy or tropical and today I’m in Fire Island which is one of my favorites. It really lasts for a beach scent to, I can still smell it this evening after spraying this morning.

Lovely photo, and lovely- smelling in Azemour today!
Continuing tuberose bombs in Sotto la Luna Tuberose. I wish Tauer would do travel size, I would buy like 5 scents right out of the gate. Love him or hate him, he’s like no one else.
    Happy Blursday!
