Friday scent of the day 1/17

Posted by Robin on 17 January 2020 239 Comments

Friday is finally here. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with immortelle, if you have one. Hat tip to Hamamelis for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Thanks to a tip from cazaubon yesterday, I'm in the very wearable Guerlain Cologne du 68.

Reminder: on 1/24, you're Among Friends...wear a fragrance someone else wore in the scent of the day polls this week. Suggested by Regina.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I loved all immortelle pictures you posted this week, Robin.

SOTD is Amouage Beloved Woman. Immortelle is voted as the main note by Fragrantica users, but I cannot smell it here. A lovely scent. In the beginning it is like a more polished version of Aromatics Elixir (and yes, it is a compllment).

Atelier Cologne Blanche Immortelle. Sample thunk! Not my cup of tea. Reads very masculine on me.
I will spray on Chanel Coromandel later on.

    Happy Friday everyone!

I love Blanche Immortelle and get compliments on it. On me it smells like sun-baked warm skin in the middle of summer (which is when I wear it).

Unfortunately, the vetiver in it becomes very pronounced on my skin. It is a nice perfume though, but it does not work much for me.

    Shalimar Body Powder
Chai tea and a ginger cookie, both homemade by my in-laws
This morning at my kids school we celebrated Chubby Buddha’s birthday, he turns 4 tomorrow.

Since I am not participating here is a Haiku for partial points, and relevant for today’s weather

“Over the Wintry” by Natsume Sōseki

    Over the wintry

    Forest, winds howl in rage

    With no leaves to blow.

Coromandel is so gorgeous, it’s such a shame Chanel have cracked down on decants of their perfume, they r so difficult to find here now.

But if I purchase a bottle am I not within my ownership rights to divide and sell this bottle? It seems like what I do with a bottle once purchased should be up to me as the purchaser

          • Robin says:
            17 January 2020 at 5:15 pm

You are within your rights to do as you like with your bottle, but not to use Chanel’s name to sell something commercially or to represent it as their product, since they have no control over how you have treated it, etc.

This is true for many consumer goods, but Chanel does take it more seriously than some brands.

      • Dawn says:
        17 January 2020 at 11:38 am

Sometimes you can find decants on Ebay. It does suck that Chanel decants are hard to come by. I think Guerlain tried to do that once a few years ago with STC, I think.

I love Coromandel! I think getting private seller decants on ebay cannot be regulated; but you can probably stop decant businesses from selling them.

On the contrary, they can be regulated and for a long time eBay themselves stopped people from selling decants.

Thanks for clarifying Robin. I see the distinction between selling parts of your bottle and using the name brand to do so. I am sure though there are creative ways around that for the determined

    Hi all!

I totally forgot about the poll today but I did very nearly pick Missoni Acqua today. Love that sneaky bit of immortelle in there! Instead I went with VCA Bois d’Iris, smooth and sweet iris. The first time I tried this one I want impressed but then a kind perfumista sent me a decant. It’s just a knockout.

    Have a great day all!

It’s a classic. Kevin reviewed it for NST and his review is pretty spot-on, at least to my nose. I’ve tried it in EDT, EDP, vintage EDC and extrait, and they are all very nice. It’s not one of those scents where the different concentrations smell different from each other – it’s fairly consistent across formulations and just varies in strength and complexity.

Forgot to mention I spritzed on Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud last night at Sephora. Brought home a sample, because I’d like to better explore the dry down. Tried the Vetiver & Golden Vanilla on a strip. First impression was too “rooty ” for me.

I’m in Eau Duelle from my handful of samples that arrived yesterday. This was the standout. I love it! It reminds me a bit of my Vanille Insensee, would I need both…??
My college daughter and I both have the day off. It’s cold, and the sun that we had yesterday has gone away (maybe it made it’s way to lillyjo?) so we are going to grab some warm blankets and hunker down on the couch and watch Thelma and Louise on prime. I felt it was time she watch this classic chick flick.

I’m in Hermessence Brin de Reglisse, which apparently has an immortelle note in it? I don’t get much from it except a beeswaxy lavender/licorice hybrid which is very nice, though it doesn’t have much staying power (no surprise there).

I am frustrated because I planned to wear Volutes today but can’t find it. Which is weird because I have not one but two bottles of it–EDT and EDP. I have obviously put some perfumes somewhere that I don’t remember. Sounds ridiculous but my house is such a disorderly mess now because it went through one transition when my mom came to live with me and I shifted a lot of things around to make one room for her, and then she moved out into assisted living, but I had to move things from my office of 33 years here and so the “empty” room became crowded with unpacked boxes. Meanwhile perfume storage was the loser and I’m still looking for a new cabinet or chest or something to make some organised storage. Anyway that’s my excuse. I only this week uncovered enough space to sit at my desk and work here.

On another note, where is Deva? I haven’t seen her all week either here or on Insta. I hope she’s OK, wasn’t she sick with something?

I found it! At least, I found the EDP bottle and am wearing it now. It’s gorgeous, very rich and smooth. I get mainly honey and smoke, and can’t actually pick out the immortelle. Maybe it’ll show up after awhile. Hope people have nice weekend plans!

It’s been days and days and days since I wore any perfume. Some viral crud kicked me viciously and I was as sick as I’ve ever been in the last 15 years. ?

Thankfully, I’ve returned to the land of the living, and to celebrate my continued existence on this plane, I’m wearing PG Indochine. This bottle is close to “thunkable” and will be gone by the end of 2020. I sent off many decants from this bottle, so I especially like the fact that it’s well loved by many people. It may have influenced a FB purchase or two.

Stay healthy, NSTers! I’d forgotten how terrible it was to feel nonstop terrible.

No immortelle today. In Ginger Piccante, its an AA by Guerlain, courtesy of Hajuusuri. Drained my decant this AM. It is the most tenacious AA I’ve worn. It really smells like ginger, reminds me of those ginger chews that are so addicting.

Totally random, and I am usually the first to throw up my hands at “digital activism”–watching something or commenting on something online in lieu of the hard work of actual advocacy—but I like this art video–regarding the fires still raging in Australia. Maybe I’ll give myself a spritz of HdP 1740 later this evening. I gave myself a spritz last night- it’s good stuff, though I prefer it in warm weather. It blooms nicely on warm summer eves. Glad I have drumming practice tonight; I need the catharsis!

Immortelle, mmmm, so pretty. I adore the flowers. Their smell reminds me of my mum. Long ago she loved to shop at slightly dusty shops full of dried flowers and baskets for her flower arranging projects. The scent memory of those places comes back to me when I smell immortelle.

It’s really funny how differently people can experience the same perfume… I find Like This to be an immortelle bomb!

Jay! I have had so much difficulty logging here after resetting my password that I gave up. But when I saw my suggestion for today’s community project honoured (thank you Robin) I gave it another try and succeeded. I’m commando because bad cold but I would have worn Sables, what else ?. Apologies to the immortelle challenged of which there are quite a few I read!

So sorry about the difficulty, but glad you made it back! And I think it’s good to have a challenging note every so often. If nothing else, we’ve all had an education about how many fragrances do in fact have immortelle.

So Moonlight Patchouli from VC&A it is.

L’Artisan Mont de Narcisse for the CP, though I can’t pick up on the immortelle. Busy Friday at work but happy for a 3 day weekend.

Thought I had a sample of Sables (might still; but who knows where?). So I’m wearing Dame Dark Horse, thunked my sample spray. I really like it but in the context of my ridiculous collection I doubt that I will end up buying a bottle (maybe the body cream after my no-buy?). Happy Friday to all. We are heading up to Holiday Valley NY for some skiing; no school on Monday!

Like some of you, I also dislike immortelle as a scent note and thought I wouldn’t be able to play today. But, luckily, Fragrantica lists one of my much-liked scents as containing that note and I again am joining some of you who’ve worn this fragrance this week in wearing AG Nuit Etoille edp as my SOTD. Also, luckily, I don’t smell the immortelle note but rather the pine and fir of a winter forest with a bit of sun from the soft citrus to brighten the scene.

My scent mirrors the day here in the Midwest, with a bit of sun to begin the day while we wait for another weekend winter storm to cover our winter forests with snow beginning later this afternoon, changing to sleet/ice during the night, then rain in the morning as temps warm up, then more snow as temps cool down again, and finally plummeting temps tomorrow to deep freeze all the precipitation for the next couple of days. Sounds crazy but I’m prepared for, as the lovely plaque that a dear friend gave me says, ‘when you have a library and a cat, you have everything you need.’ (+, I would add, plenty of food, wine, movies and, of course, perfume!)

Hope you have everything you need for a beautiful Friday and weekend ahead!

I admire your fortitude. I am happening to just miss the storm by being out of the Midwest for the weekend but I know if I were there I would really be down

I love NE in the winter. It reminds me of the woods in winter. The coolness of the mint feels perfect on a snowy day. We are having the same weekend forecast where I live. What a mess. ?

Sunny but COLD today! I’ll take that over the “Yuck” that is in tomorrow’s forecast, though. ??

SOTD = HdP 1740 EdP, from the sample stash. I usually get just leather and patchouli with this one. Today I had a brief flash of immortelle before the leather-patchouli fest started up on me.

Honestly, I don’t know if I like immortelle or not. I do know I like Sables in small amts. I couldn’t find my sample though. I went with Cuir D’Ange today, I find it calming. Waiting for the storm, ugh.. have I mentioned I hate winter?

If I have any perfumes with immortelle, they must be very well blended. Supposedly Shalimar PI has it, but I can’t detect it. Nor could I detect it in Amouage Beloved.

I’m with you on hating winter! They finally sanded the mountain road this afternoon we take to work & home after 5 days of awfulness. I’m sure many people complained to the city powers that be because I’ve never seen sanding trucks out! So very glad to be home.

Most of the time, I don’t mind immortelle on my skin at first. But then for whatever reason it starts to annoy me, and I want to wash it off.

Sprayed on copious amounts of Hermes Hiris after work. Needed something comforting after this week of cold weather and snow storms.

Stay warm and safe everyone! And take extra care on the roads. There was a horrible accident where someone was killed yesterday.

Glad you are home safe! I live in the city, so the plows and salt trucks should be out. It’s mostly having to watch out for idiot drivers, going too fast, and not paying attention.

Carner Barcelona D600 for me today, but would have worn L de Lolita Lempicka today for immortelle if it were at all subtle. But L is definitely not subtle. Looking forward to a cold, rainy weekend.
