Friday scent of the day 2/1

Posted by Robin on 1 February 2019 300 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit, welcome to February! And happy National Freedom Day. Our community project for today: to celebrate Cherry Month, wear a fragrance with a cherry or cherry blossom note.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in my first Serge, Rahät Loukoum.

Reminder: on 2/8 our theme is Fire and Ice...wear something that keeps you warm in winter (Fire) OR wear something that reminds you of snow and chilly winter air (Ice). Suggested by Glannys.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Bunny Hat in Dark Pink with Cherries is sadly sold out at Oeuf NYC, but you can still get the same pattern in footies and a ruffle collar tee.

Hah, I remember the summer that song was the It Song. The juvenile delinquents who lived down the street would blast it from their car every morning as they headed to school (or wherever it was they actually went). I know they meant to annoy but I LOVED IT.

    RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT
    I remembered at 3am!

Phlur Hepcat for cherry and sweet tobacco…my goodness this stuff is fantastic in extreme cold! -6F again this morning.

Also tested Fum (Winter Crocus and the two others). Nicely done and potent as they are extraits. Sadly full bottles are quite pricey.

and thunked two DSH samples this morning as the vials were approximately 1/4 to 1/3 full- Sienna and Bancha (sp??)

The original ones were outstanding (early to late 1990s) They had oakmoss and other good notes which made them less fruity/youthful. Un Ete En Provence is probably my favorite from 1994.

    • chocolatemarzipan says:

It’s deadly. Found a “whatever” sweater that would have been perfect for my son when he was young, except if I had put an alpaca sweater on him when he was young (or maybe even now) things would’ve gotten ugly.

It does have a weirdly industrial smell, doesn’t it? I mean, it’s identifiably lavender, but robotic lavender, or arrived-on-a-spacecraft lavender. I think it’s riveting.

I just don’t have anything to fit the project today, although, I might have been able to stretch it. For the first time in awhile, Angel Liquor called my name. Mine is the 2013 version and I get alot of honey, which I struggle with. Being this cold though, mellows it a bit. Expecting to see 32 degrees tomorrow!

Smelling all delicious, is probably the best perfume compliment I’ve ever received, thanks! Oh, except maybe in the early nineties when a cute guy told me I smelled like candy. Which is funny because I was wearing Halston Catalyst and did not smell like candy! Lol

I was looking for Volutes for the CP since Robin had mentioned it yesterday, but couldn’t find it. (I have both EDT and EDP, now where could those bottles have disappeared to?) Anyway, I saw Chamber Noire and sprayed it on instead. Maybe a bit too sweet but still a nice one for another gray day.

Well I forgot about the rabbits but I did actually DREAM about feeding a rabbit a carrot last night! So points for my subconscious.

Waiting for a big windy rainy storm to hit. Need to go bring the bird feeders inside before they get blown away.

SOTD is LPRN Black Perfecto. I see I have plenty of company 🙂

I am wearing Thierry Mugler Angel Fruity Fair. Wow, that is a long name for one perfume. I do not have any cherry fragrances, so I went with this one because of the fruits in it — litchi and red currant. Maybe partial credit ?? 🙂

    Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit!

    Where did January go?

    1) In Aromatics CHERRY, from a sample. Wowzers! First- what a change from the fleeting, soft fragrances I tried this past month. Second, why did I not buy this? The cherry note is a rich syrupy tobacco/greenish note. It’s spicy. SHE THICC, so a couple of tiny sprays was enough. I like it; I would not suggest this as a blind buy, though.

    2) Bought Turin/Sanchez’s second Perfume book as an e-book to read on the commute. Reading Turin and Sanchez’s industry insights and their roasts of popular mass and niche scents are making me giggle on the commute!

Cherries are my favourite fruit and I often dream of them in the dead of winter. I don’t have much choice perfume-wise but wemt with West Third’s Tobacco 1812. I don’t see cherry listed but it smells like cherry tobacco to me.
I’d really like to try Lost Cherry. It might be the suggestion of this week’s theme or maybe after reading some good reviews of it but it sounds nice. I never had much interest in Tom Ford’s before so we’ll see how that goes.

I planned to wear LPRN Black Perfecto, but MEM just jumped into my hand. Who was I to deny it?

(And there’s a bit of previous wearing of Hyde on my sleeve, which just purrs along so beautifully once the raging fire burns out. I like that fire, though.)

No rabbits. But plenty of squirrels coming for their morning snacks. I think the ground is too hard for them to dig up their stashes, which is making them extra keen. The boldest–the one with white tufted ears–taps on the window and waits for me to hand out a half walnut as his reward.

I can’t tell if that hat is for children or adults.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! (It counts as long as I said it before seeing it on NST, right?) I’m starting American Heart Health Month off right with a doughnut and coffee >.< I love both of those things so much.

I also love JM Honey & Crocus, which is my SOTD! It is the only JM I genuinely love (though there are many that I like or enjoy). I still wish I had blind-bought some of the other scents in that series (the British meadow series or something?). Those bottles are exactly up my aesthetic alley, and H&C is just so spectacular.

Anyway, I feel almonds have gotten me partial credit.

I’ve never tried the Black or White version of AE. So I’m not sure how the Cherry compares to them. But imo, I don’t get any of the original AE vibe in this one. It’s very nice.

I used to love that one, until a point came when many of the Serge’s (including FdB) started to strike me as too screechy, scratchy or uncomfortably buzzy. There’s something about the transition from the stewed fruit phase to the woody spice phase that needs softening. I still pick up my bottle and sniff it longingly.

I bet it smells great on you!

Thank you! The last couple of times I have worn FdB is has been a little annoying. The opening is perfect, but the drydown becomes very masculine, something that bothers me some. It never happened before. The same with Chergui. I hope is just temporary, since I love both perfumes a lot.

Wearing DSH Eau Cerise, which is just lovely. A try cherry note in a floral composition. However, the voile de parfum concentration is very fleeting on me. I actually ordered the EDP 3ml spray, but they sent the VDP. This does mean I can actually get away with reapplying in the bathroom at work though.

Well, my dinner at JuneBaby was just ok. We had some highs and lows in the meal, and I was left thinking we should have made some different choices in ordering. The collard greens, mac and cheese, and bread pudding were definitely my winners. I liked the buggies biscuits a lot, but my friend and dining partner wasn’t a fan. Some people have very firm ideas of the way biscuits should be! My friend is also highly critical of food at restaurants even though she’s open to eating many things.

That does sound annoying. Luckily it’s not often my friend sends back food, but she’s hard to please. So there can be a lot of negative feedback at the table. I think my boyfriend gets annoyed by this when we go out together with her.

Bummer it wasn’t what you expected after the build up ? I might tend to have high expectations of really hyped-up restaurants, too. But once you have a frame of reference of “really good”, it’s hard not to compare, I suppose.

Aw, that’s too bad your dinner was a bit of a letdown. I thought that “buggie biscuits” were upscale restaurant speak for their version of the dish. And I think almost everyone has a “picky about food” friend.

I’m glad to hear that you have a lot of promising dining options to look forward to in the future.

Ordered some decanting supplies from STC to prevent evaporation that I am dealing with my vintage L’heure Bleue extrait. We should do a blast from the past (high school days) or discontinued loves or an aldehyde Friday. Wearing vintage no 5 edt today since I don’t have a cherry perfume.

Completely failing at the CP this week. Instead I’m sampling Jasmin et Cigarette.

I have to admit, I’m honestly perplexed by this one. At first I didn’t think liked it, it reminds me of my late grandfather’s wife (not my grandma) in Florida who always smelled like cigarettes and some kind of floral perfume. I really do get the ashtray vibe from this one. But now that I’ve been wearing it a few hours it’s growing on me. Will probably have to try it a time or two more to see what I really think. It’s definitely unlike anything I’ve sniffed before.

Thankful that I do NOT get any ashtray from Jasmin et Cigarette. Instead, I smell dried tobacco leaves and a hint of something woody along with a fairly indolic jasmine.

I really like Jasmin et Cigarette?

I’ve noticed that it seems to really change depending on the weather and humidity. I did wear it in Florida and noticed a more just-light cigarette smell there, maybe because of the humidity. Back home in the dry weather, the jasmine seems more prevalent. Either way, I find more is more with this one.

I’m twins today with Robin in SL Rahat Loukoum. I treasure my one and only bell jar, a souvenir of my one and only trip to Paris and a wonderful afternoon spent in Serge’s salon. It’s cherry/almond is a perfect comfort scent for the first coming-out-of-the-polar-vortex day; after a -21 temperature low yesterday it’s already a balmy +14 degrees with sunshine! I’m grateful for the winged and furry creatures outside my window who made it through this very difficult week of snow and cold and graced us with their presence as they flocked to the food and water offerings in our back yard. I am inspired by their fortitude!

I was surprised reading this week’s comments at how many NST’ers don’t have any cherry or cherry-blossom fragrances. Both are notes I enjoy and I do have several fragrances with those notes, but they say ‘Springtime!’ to me and remind me of the one lucky time I was in Washington D.C. and experienced the cherry blossom trees in full bloom. But these scents will have to wait their turn until April. Rahat is the only one just perfect for today.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead!

I first became hooked years ago when I heard a cardinal singing constantly outside my kitchen window, looked out and saw the nest-building in progress. I abandoned all else for several weeks, binoculars glued to my eyes and perched on a small stool, as I watched the little family. Began leaving sunflower seeds out for them, and the rest is history!

The cemetery where I walk was nondenominational ( functioned for burials 1872-1937, except for family plots) but was arranged by purchase price…so the wealthy people got the sunny hill top with the harbour view and the paupers and children got the dark bush gullies. What that means is that you can ( almost literally ) smell the wealth when you walk, especially in the heat. Rose bushes are planted on all the big sunny graves and the smell hangs over the hill, rich, jammy, rose. But as you walk down the air gets damper, and the bush gets denser and in the heat the small drain dries up into ponds of stagnant water which mixes with damp fern etc. and is pretty pungent. Very noticeable scent zones .today I am wearing immortal Beloved.

I’m enjoying your daily smell journeys, Kanuka! I sometimes think about creating a “smell map” of my daily walk to work, with a layer for each season. Depending on the time of year and time of day, I might get wafts of baking pizza from the pizzeria on the corner, blooms on my neighbor’s lilac bush, peppermint that grows on the patio of the restaurant at the bottom of the hill, fresh-brewed coffee from the Starbucks across the street from work, and so on…

Hey, i bought two candles yesterday . They didn’t have your one but I got Emerson and Tolstoy…so a big pin for you. I noticed the other day that an online drawing class called Sketchbook Skool has a ‘. Map’ drawing lesson, you know those funky maps that are more like illustrations. I think I might do it and learn how to scent map the grayeyard and the hill I walk on. I like your map a lot. It’s amazing how quickly you can tune in and identify your location by smell even when you are daydreaming . Love it.

In the very cheerful LPRN Couture, OK, according to Fragrantica is has no cherry, but close enough maybe with plenty of raspberry deliciousness wafting, this project reminds me why I got a partial bottle of Couture after draining samples, the original LPRN always had a bothering synthetic note on my skin and Couture never did that.

So glad to be bidding goodbye to January, Happy Friday.

I had to end the week of our community project in POTL. Twins with PriscillaE.

I enjoyed reading about crikey’s friendly and smart squirrel. I’ve got one in my back yard that comes onto my deck railing and looks in my living room window. He turns around once or twice after he sees me. Then I go out my front door and put a few peanuts at the end of my driveway and he comes to get them. I am always surprised he knows enough to do that.

There was a movie about squirrels called “Daylight Robbery” and it showed how clever they are at beating “squirrel proof” bird feeders. I have a fondness for squirrels which might be clouding my judgement but I found it really entertaining. I think it can still be found on YouTube.

I’m not a huge fan of cherry in fragrance but I did use C&E Sweet Almond Oil shower gel and lotion this morning. It has that cherry-almond smell like Jergen’s original soap. I love the old-school Jergen’s fragrance!

I bought a recent version of hand lotion for my purse awhile ago and was very disappointed with the obvious reformulation of the lotion; both scent and texture were so different from what I remember. It was almost chemically.

Adding the C&E to my list, hope I see it!

I was wondering as I typed of Jergans had messed with the scent in their products. The scent used to be quite nice. My mother has a thing for almond cherry scents so I used this soap frequently growing up. I found my SG and the matching lotion at TJ Maxx if you have one close by.

Keiko Mecheri “Ume” is as close as I can get to cherry. Grey and rainy as we catch the outer rim of storm Helena, which is lashing the Northern coast at the moment.

SOTD = Tom Ford Lost Cherry

Double points for the cherry note and cherry in the name. Besides I wore enough for at least 2, if not 3, people. You know what this imeans – 8 sprays! I smell F-ing Fabulous.

It’s been a brutal week in many fronts but I persevered and I am rewarding myself with an extra day off! I was a bystander in a meeting when 2 senior managers (each only a few heartbeats away from the CEO), went at each other with sarcastic and vicious verbal attacks related to processes The sad part is I don’t think there will be any negative consequences to either one. In contrast, today, in an announcement about February being a month to celebrate a certain heritage, there was an uproar over the content of the message and some people went too far with criticisms that became personal attacks. At least one person will lose his/her job.

Continuing with what a crazy week, because there were all sorts of train delays and I needed to stay later anyway, I decided to take Uber back to the train station. The driver of the car did not answer my call and when he finally arrived, he could not explain why he did not answer the call so I cancelled. When I tried to book another one, I kept getting assigned to the same guy because he was the one nearest the pick up point. I finally waited it out and got a different driver. I also got a refund for the cancellation fee and I left a complaint utilizing the Service Animal Issue category because that was the only issue type that accepts free-text descriptions.

To end on a good note, my SOTD yesterday was Le Labo Iris 39!

I didn’t feel safe and cancelled. Drama in nature and drama at work, what a combo!

I avoid that type of turmoil at work whenever possible. You were smart to take an extra day off. Hopefully it will be calm next week.
Good on you for double points for the cp.

I pretty much effectively already put in over 6 days worth of work in 5 days so the “extra” day off was already offset. I carried over 8 days from last year and need to use them by March or they go poof!

I remembered to say rabbit rabbit rabbit for the first time ever at 2:00 am. The cat threw up immediately afterwards. What luck?

I wore phlur Hepcat today – I was going to wear Luctor et Emergo, but when I sniffed it this morning it was waaaay too sweet. I really like Hepcat – it’s a very dry riff on pipe tobacco, and I really appreciate that because my skin amplifies sweet notes. Tobacco Vanilla is way too much on me, but I love it in theory.

Wafting chocolate-covered cherries in Sweet Anthem Linda. Like many real chocolate-covered cherries, the candied cherries overshadow the thin milk chocolate coating. Actually, the candied aspect of the perfume has faded quite a bit, making it more wearable, really, but less on-theme. I wonder why this perfume was discontinued? This sort of sweet gourmand seems very on-trend for this decade, and the drydown is quite pleasant. I may top this up later with some Lush Cardamom Chocolate.

Happy weekend, everyone. I hope everyone is staying warm. This winter is making me glad to be a Californian.
