Friday scent of the day 11/17

Posted by Robin on 17 November 2017 252 Comments

carnation

Happy Dealer's Choice Friday! Our community project for today: propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I got no theme for you — that's why we're doing this project! I'm wearing Aedes de Venustas Oeillet Bengale, just because. (And actually, that would fit next week's project for me too.)

Reminder: 11/24 will be Hide My Credit Card Friday...in honor of Black Friday / Buy Nothing Day, wear a fragrance (presumably from a sample) that you're itching to buy but don't own yet. Suggested by Lovestosmellgood.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

TIME TRAVEL- wear a perfume that takes you back in time and reminds you of your past

SIGNATURE SCENT- wear a perfume that you wore so often some might proclaim it was your signature scent

INTRO TO INDIE- wear your first full bottle indie perfume or the first indie you sampled

UNDERATED- wear a fragrance that you feel never got enough love from perfumistas

NST CAMRADERIE- wear a fragrance that was given to you by an NSTer

BUB FRENZY- wear a fragrance that you wish you had bought a back-up bottle of

BACK FROM THE DEAD- wear a fragrance that was discontinued or was limited edition that made a comeback or one that you wish would be re-released and taken out of the vault

PLAYING FAVORITES- wear a perfume from one of your all-time favorite perfumers

And has anyone tried Bee’s Bliss yet? Thoughts?

I do something similar from time to time: if I have a little time in the morning, I start reading the SOTD thread until I come across somebody mentioning perfume that I feel will be good for that day. I use NST’s daily post as my Magic 8-Ball for perfume selection :)

This week I am wearing scents I haven’t made up my mind about. Either the ones I tried only once, so I want to see whether I feel the same about them after the second wearing. Or old forgotten samples – I did not dislike them (so they were not given away), but I did not like them enough to purchase a larger decant or FB.
So my SOTD is Reichenbach Golden Drop. It’s a mini I got as a gift and first tried in June. I liked it then, and I still like it now (maybe even more). An intimate old-school scent – I can smell honeycomb, dry flowers, animalic notes and something chypre-like. This one definiteley stays with me. :)

Jo Malone Orris & Sandalwood. I wish my creative juices were flowing this week, but they are not. So, sorry — I don’t have any ideas for themes.

I am bringing my Mom to her doctor’s appointment today. This is the third day in a row I have been in this doctor’s office building (Wednesday for my Dad, yesterday for me, today for my Mom). I think my car can drive their by itself.

Between PT and doctor’s appointments (spin a body parts wheel), my mom is out of the house 2-3 days A WEEK, I kid you not. So, doing the math, at the low end, that’s 100x per year and they are always on different days. At this rate, if I was responsible for taking her, I would have lost my job (or would have to quit my job to accommodate her schedule). The answer? A senior helper who comes to pick her up, waits for her, and then brings her home at $25 per hour. All I can say is that is a lot of perfumes.

Wearing Guerlain Terracotta. I needed something summery and kind of beachy on this super cold, windy morning to cheer up. That could be a community project. Wear a summer perfume during winter that cheers you up and makes your day sunnier, brighter and warmer.

Other ideas for community projects could be:
Wear your best perfume purchase of the year and tell us what you love so much about it,
    or
Wear a modern perfume that you think will be a great classic in 20 years.

    Happy Friday everyone!

I’m so excited to see everybody’s ideas!

I am sticking with the theme of “tell us about a dream you had, at any time in your life, and wear a fragrance that matches it.” I have been thinking about ways to make this more inclusive for people who don’t remember your dreams, so I’ll add – if you don’t remember any dreams, pick a fragrance that matches a dream scene from a book, movie or TV show!

I have a favorite recurring dream. I am in one of my grandmothers’ houses (they are long dead), and I discover that there are suites of attic rooms I never knew about, and keep discovering room after room: cozily furnished secret places that are all mine. I am wearing Habanita which I think combines old-fashioned coziness with a splash of adventure.

It’s definitely happy-making. I always feel excitement and a deep sense of satisfaction when I realize where I am (in the dream). Oddly, I don’t ever get to the part where I eat the pastry; I just experience the happiness at the plenitude and variety.

What a lovely dream. Dreams where you remember past times or bring you back to remember a loved one are wonderful.

One of my all-time favorite dreams was that I was a back up singer for Kenny Loggins. In the dream I was on stage with him at a concert. It was elaborate and very real feeling. The amusing part is I am not a singer AT ALL.

Great dream! I have similar ones in which apartments and houses I know well turn out to have lots of hidden passageways, additional rooms, once a pair of glass doors opening up to a river bank. Sometimes these can end a little sinister, but mostly they are amazing and adventurefilled and wondrous.

My theme suggestion is One Hit Wonder, which could be interpreted as wearing the only fragrance you own (or like) from a given house, or wear a fragrance with the note least represented in your collection. That could have been my theme from a couple of days ago when I wore Vol de Nuit (the only Guerlain that works for me … so far), or today when I’m in OJ Woman. Vetiver is the most under-represented note (that I actually like) in my non-vast but much-loved bunch of bottles and decants. Happy Friday all.

    Also in Aedes today
    Iris Nazarena,
    Almost drained my 2nd sample

My choice of theme ‘Office friendly but not generic’ (Dryad also fits that one)

The dry down of iris nazarena is a bit too clean for my taste, i wish it had a lil bit more smoke and oomph
but its such an addictive scent and perfect for work/office spaces.
So i am considering a decant or travel spray….(fits next weeks theme as well!).

And I wore Bois d’Ascese (sample) yesterday evening (so good in fall/winter). My husband complimented me on it and is now wearing it himself haha. :)
So, also good contender for next weeks theme I guess.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Wearing some Shalimar blah blah blah Mexique and some Le Plus Beau Jour de ma Vie because the decants were side by side.

I like the Mexique but Shalimar Light is superior imho. The Plus is nice but sweet…kind of makes my teeth hurt. ;)

    Happy Friday!

I am going to compare the Mexique flanker to my Madagascar one and see if there is a difference. I remember the Mexique being sweeter and less smokey than the ladder.

I have never tried Le Pus Beau Jour me Vie..is it worth seeking out to try. Since I am in NY I can’t get samples from STC or other decanting services…

          Heresy! ;)

You kindly gave me a sample of Mon Exclusif a few months back and it sat and languished sadly. I sampled it a couple weeks ago and promptly hunted down a bottle. I actually haven’t Mon Guerlain yet but I wanted to lock down the Mon Exclusif before it disappears entirely.

Thank you for that sample. Well, all the samples that is. :)

Wearing Chanel Pour Monsieur, it just arrived, a blind buy, it’s exactly what I needed.

How about a day for the almost perfect scent. The one you love , but it has that one note or facet that that’s like a smudge on the window. But you to wear it anyway, cause every thing else is perfect.

Wearing JPG Classique one hand and Grandiflora Queen of the Night on the other.

When I first smelled QOTN, it instantly reminded me of classique – now smelling them side-by-side I can see how different they are (although they do have a similarity).

I had a breakthrough in preschool cuisine today. Hungry myself for something savory warm and rich, but also needing to feed preschoolers – I fried leftover spaghetti in butter, flash fried bacon cut up into small bits, added to spaghetti, then added many scrambled eggs. They love it! Miracle of miracles! I’m calling this “spaghetti scramb-onara”

They looked at each other and gave each other the thumbs up after their first bite – wish I had a picture

Well, Classique to me smells like a big powdery vanilla perfume. But there’s some kind of flower in there too. So I would say queen of the night is similar in it bigness, and maybe that flower that is in classique is reminiscent of the flowers scent in queen of the night, only it’s bigger, richer and with more depth and it’s the whole flower, stems and leaves – and maybe a teeny bit of hothouse scent.

got a 2ml sample – so if you’d like I’m happy to send you 1ml, if so just let me know your email

To answer your question about no 5 for work: I dab the majority of my perfumes during the workweek to keep sillage low or spritz a bit in my hair. But I also don’t find no 5 that big once the aldehydes quiet down. And it doesn’t strike me as that fancy for some reason. To me it’s just a sheer, warm/cool, lightly spiced floral. Now I’m tring to think of what I think of as fancy/formal. I guess Amouage Jubilation 25 springs to mind.

According to Yosh, I am a king wandering thru a Bavarian forest, on horseback. To my nose, notes include forest, leather, and crisp apple. Thankfully no horse. My theme idea is “Something old, something new”: wear a vintage fragrance (or just a very old one, even if your bottle / sample / whatever isn’t vintage), or wear a fragrance that was released recently, or one of each if you want to go crazy with it.

And for that theme, I’m wearing vintage Arpege.

Another I was tossing about this morning while deciding what to wear, but I couldn’t remember if we’d already done it:

Gender bent: wear a fragrance marketed to the opposite sex, if you have any

“Too Late…” Opium Fleur de Shanghai. I’d probably buy a full bottle if it was still available.

Ebay follow up: the seller from whom I got the Old Spice novelty item with piggy bank won’t refund me claiming she wants me to return the broken mess (I did send her photos of the disaster, including of the flat bubble wrap she used). I told her I had to toss the whole thing because it reeked and couldn’t keep it in the apt. 2×4 3/4 oz bottles emptied into the box! She says I should’ve bagged it to contain the smell or washed the parts. Ugh.

If you don’t, you can refer the dispute to ebay and I can’t imagine they wouldn’t side with you.

I’ve not had a situation nearly that bad, but I did buy a mini that half-drained en route. When I let the seller know, she insisted she’d packaged it “very carefully.” No – scotch tape and a paper towel is not “very careful” packaging. Since it only cost ~$10 so I let it go, but it really rankled me.

          • Elisa P says:
            17 November 2017 at 5:14 pm

Well, I called eBay just a bit ago because she’s accepting a return in exchange for a refund even though I told her I had to toss it after a day from the fumes. So eBay thought it was resolved. Now they’re being difficult asking me to go to the post office and get a letter stating why they wouldn’t have been able to mail the item back- ie: perfume/hazmat. Wait. What?!? I had to argue with the guy and basically tell him this was seriously ridiculous and am not doing that. It was $49 so not *that* much. If it were <$30 I probably wouldn’t bother from this point because it’s more of a headache than it’s worth.

My theme: Love at First Sniff.

Today’s scent: Escentric 2. This one didn’t even make it to skin – I bought it after smelling it on a blotter.

Mitigating circumstances: it was my first time ever in a Barney’s, and my first time buying perfume in person since I had purchased a bottle of exclamation! in middle school. I was intimidated like crazy, even though the SA was a super nice woman. She asked what I liked the smell of, I said “gin and tonics”, and she immediately picked Escentric 2. And it was a great choice for me – I still love it to this day. Five years later, and I have no problem marching myself into high end boutiques or department stores to find perfume. This is largely because that SA was so welcoming and friendly.

Barney’s staff are amazing. My first experience with them was in Las Vegas. That night I was the only customer in the store; I had so much fun there.

My hubby had to hunt me down in there just as I was purchasing my SL Bois de Violette. I’m sure he spent the same amount in the casino before he found me.

Project: wear a perfume you adore but that doesn’t “fit” you correctly

I’m wearing Hermes 24 Rue Fauborg today, and I absolutely love it. But I see this perfume as an elegant, generous and successful woman. She’s probably in her mid-40s or so. She commutes from her art-filled apartment to her desk job via train every day. The cloud of fragrance around her is never too little, and never too much. She probably carries a really nice purse and wears her hair in a chignon. Definitely not where I’m at in life ;)

Very, very smart and confident, well-coiffed, perfect nails, killer legs, a canary diamond ring I coveted. So feminine in a male-dominated industry.

I love that one! In the summer my skin amplifies the citrus..but I wore it last night in the cold and it read as a highly edible amber with a touch of citrus…I must definitely give it some more skin time in the winter. It is also a great one to purchase as full bottle due to the reasonable prices online. Do you like VM better than VI?

I think I like both better than Eau Duelle, not sure which one I like the best. The petitgrain faded pretty fast and I’m getting lots of orange now. It’s very different from VI.

yes, they are both very different but I love them both..I bought both for a younger family member who is a vanilla fiend but I am constantly “borrowing” her bottles…are you planning on making any full bottle purchases or just exploring the note for now?

Wearing The Different Company De Bachmakov for the first time and I love it. It reminds me of my zen place: a snow-covered meadow under a steel gray sky, pine trees in the near distance, completely silent.

My suggestion for a Friday project is to wear something that you enjoy, but doesn’t seem to get much love from other perfumistas. We did something like this once quite a while back, but not recently, (unless I missed reading on a Friday in the recent past). It was fun seeing what other people like that might surprise others.

I am wearing DelRae Emotionnelle, with all of its sweet and intense melon wafting everywhere I go. Have to admit I do really enjoy it whenever I wear it, and it must smell at least kind of good on me to others near by, as I’ve received compliments and people weren’t just trying to be nice!

    1) Theme: Peaceful and/or thoughtful scents.

Am in Prada Infusion Amande, which is really peaceful and lovely and light.

    2) Discovered that I have NOT taken enough vacation time off this year, so I will basically have most of December off! This will be really needed; the time off will be devoted to much needed sleep and spa days.

    3) Also! My dividing line fence in the back yard fell down. It was poorly constructed 11 years ago when the homes were built and we have had a series of high wind, high snow weather spans ever since. It needed to be replaced. My neighbor says that he would like to the insurance to pay for replacing the fence and that he talked to them and such. I think he’s nuts because the deductible is $1000 for most policies, and fencing is usually seen as maintenance. Plus he wants the same crap fence that was put there originally, and to install it would cost- you guessed it- less than $1000.
Since I have been wanting to turn my matchbox back yard into a second sort of outdoor living room, I will sketch out what I would like and build a new fence along the dividing line. in Spring, re- landscape the yard and replace the fencing long the other two sides. The neighbor can keep his money or build a fence along his side of the dividing line if he chooses.

If it comes up again on FragranceNet I say get the Prada Gift Set.

        Hey there!

#3- Yeah, that is basically what I am gonna do. You have to maintain your place, and before I bought the place it is clear he did not take care of the fence. My short term fixes – i placed bracing on my side- was intended so that I could price out landscaping and fencing for this upcoming year. Now, the choice is upon me!

Wearing Mecca Balsam by Via del Profumo, which I initially thought was too masculine for me. Ha! Just bought a bottle, and very chuffed with it I am too. So how about

Broadened Horizons: Wear a perfume you initially thought was (or still think is) too masculine / feminine / oldfashioned / [insert adjective] for you to wear.

I bought Mecca Balsam not least because it comes in a 15ml bottle. So here‘s another idea:

Too Big for the Shelf: Wear a perfume you wish would come in a smaller bottle.

Dealer: A couple of months ago I happened to be sitting next to a couple on a plane who were travelling down to Dunedin to attend a grand ball at a local castle …it was the 50th anniversary of a ball they had attended in 1967 while students, at the same castle ( on a bleak hill, sometimes in mist, overlooking a harbour). They were really excited because they knew that 75% of the original students (law and medicine, mostly) would be there but some they hadn’t seen for 50 years.
So, two perfume choices….grand ball 1967 and 2017, young with a future and older with a future.

It was an interesting conversation because they would have been pretty poor students living in old flats in the first instance and now mostly well-off and successful, so they were reflecting on that. And it was interesting how the friendships had remained in their hearts, really, though not necessarily in a physical way. And there had been deaths and divorces,I suspect. I filed it away as an idea for a book.
        Grand Bal sounds good.

I’m doing “nope then YES” again with Narciso. The white cube. Again, there was something I detected as sharp when I first sniffed this. It was getting so much love, and I just didn’t care for it even after a couple of tries in the store. About a year later, I tried it again…I think in an airport. There was that creaminess people kept talking about!

I waited in that queue for many, many hours last week and came up empty-handed. I tried every single date multiple times and every one was sold out (using a Virtual Fan code.) I finally hit on 2 tickets that were literally in the top row in the top balcony and passed. If I’m going to see a show I want to actually be able to see it (I tell myself, anyway…)

I looked again today, now that tickets are open to the general public and prices are starting at over $450 a piece!!! The ones I passed on were $115 with the best seats going for like $175.

Anyway, good luck! I’ll see it when the tours passes through again in 2020 or whenever it happens again…

STUNNINGLY beautiful day after what seems like years of rain. The sun is blinding, warm and friendly, the complete opposite of the Florida sun that tries to pound me into the ground like an anvil with oppressive heat and humidity. My theme was match your perfume to your soap or shower gel (could be match to any product in your bath/shower).

Today I used Monsillage Chypre bar soap with notes of oakmoss, patchouli, and ylang ylang. The perfume I chose to complement it was Montale Blue Amber, which is OMG SO GOOD. Why don’t I wear this all the time? I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite Montale of the 10-15 I’ve tried.

Dealer’s choice theme for Friday: “Is it real, or is it Memorex?” A bit of a shout-out to those old enough to remember making mix tapes with a cassette player. The idea behind it is to wear a scent or fragrance that photorealistically duplicates the smell of something else.

SOTD = Soivohle Red Canyon Sutra, from the sample stash. This is the spitting image of an Islay single malt scotch on me. And that’s a good thing! A bit of a pick me up for times when I can’t have a wee nip of something.

    SOTD = Serge Lutens L’Incendiaire

    From the Section D’Or line.

Wear something obscenely expensive. Or wear the most expensive perfume in your collection on a per mL basis (this is not my most expensive because I bought it at a discount).

The bottle is OTT sleek and the packaging luxurious. The juice is elegantly resinous incense. It stays close to skin and very office appropriate.

I channeled Bear this morning. Pre-caffeinated, I asked a guy standing next to me at Starbucks what perfume he’s wearing. He was flattered and said he wore One Million. Who knew it smelled so good :-)

I got my flu shot today – better late than never!

It is a sad fact that many fragrances smell waaaay richer and smoother on a man’s skin.

That could be a theme – wear a perfume that smells better on a man :-)

I have something to wear for both of your themes! :)

Ha! I love your theme but then I should not have drained that gorgeous Byredo rose oud extrait that you sent me as that was the most expensive sample in my house-LOL!

Funny, I recently asked a male friend what perfume he was wearing because I thought he smelled good, and it was also One Million! I was also surprised.

A late entry, but I just had an idea: Inspiration Friday. Think of something you’ve been wanting to do – finishing a task, trying something for the first time, doing something creative, or whatever – and wear a perfume that will inspire you to do it!
