Friday scent of the day 1/18

Posted by Robin on 18 January 2019 257 Comments

Friday plus Thesaurus Day plus Cary Grant’s birthday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance by Eau d'Italie, Etat Libre d'Orange, Escentric Molecules or Etro, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter E.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection by Etat Libre d'Orange, which according to the actress is "made with love to protect you".

Reminder: on 1/25, wear one of your favorite fragrances of this winter (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your favorite scents of this summer).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

ELdO Rien. For a scent called “Nothing” there’s a hell of a lot going on! Leather, extra-smoky incense, a hint of old-school chypre, a bit of rose….

I have a mini that I decanted half of into a glass sprayer with a metal sleeve, so I couldn’t see it: I sprayed it on this morning and thought, “WHOA. I don’t remember Rien smelling like this!” Turns out it had mostly evaporated, so all I had left was base notes: leather soaked in liquefied incense smoke. It was amazing — too much, but really great.

Then an hour later I splashed on some more from the mini, so so I could remember what it was actually supposed to smell like. Still great, and not overwhelming.

I saw the Edward Bess Spanish Veil decant first so that was what I wore. Had I found Like This first, I would have worn it. Good stuff, if a tad sweet which is saying a lot since I have a high tolerance for sweet.

Quadruplets. I smell great, but I am not sure I truly like this one.

I wore mostly ELDO this week, from the discovery set that Sephora had a year or so ago (maybe still does). Anyway, I was struck how a couple of them — especially Fils de Dieu — shifted emphasis when I left the warmish house for the cold outdoors. In the case of Fils de Dieu, the lime and vetuver whomped me in the face the minute I went into the cold, then returned to hiding when I went indoors.

I wore Jasmin et Cigarette yesterday. It had very little sillage on me, though I could still smell it, hours later, if I gave my wrists a good huff.

Stay warm and safe this weekend if you are in the path of the storm!

Quintuplets! Though this was the one time I actually had multiple bottles that worked for the challenge, but I got Like This for Christmas after running through two samples and so am going with the newest bottle. It’s not sweet on me, either, and it’s a bit offbeat and just works for me somehow.

Smelling pretty awesome (in my opinion) in ELdO Fat Electrician. Why don’t I reach for this more often? I need to!

SMELLY SALE ALERT: The Clinique counter at Belk is having a great clearance sale on some of their fragrance sets (from Christmas I’m guessing). You can buy online too. They have 50% off Happy, Aromatics Elixir, and Wrappings gift sets, as well as Happy for Men. WHEEEEEEEE!!!!! I bought the Wrappings set in store last night, and just ordered the Aromatics online. I LOVE Aromatics body lotion anyway! 🙂

I’m wearing Eldo Delicios Closet Queen. I know it’s a male fragrance, but it’s pretty tame compared to others and enjoyable, it stays close to me without being too clingy – I generally have a hard time wearing ELDO in general except for Jasmin and Cigarettes and a handful of others. There’s something synthetic that just doesn’t work well with my body chemistry…

I could have been PriscillaE’s scent twin, but my impending cold turned into a full-blown cold, so I did not feel like wearing Jasmin et Cigarette. Three blankets, my dear kitty and two spritzes of Theorema keep me warm and relatively comfortable. It’s a very soothing scent for a fever – warm but not cloying. Love those bright oranges in it.

SOTD = Edward Bess Spanish Veil

I have a decant and lightly spritzed (=1). The perfume is a powdery feminine woody and very tonka-forward beauty. Here’s Jessica’s review:

    https://nstperfume.com/2017/02/23/edward-bess-spanish-veil-fragrance-review/

A no good horrible thing happened to me yesterday — train commute home was fine but my car would not start! Luckily, I have AAA Premier Membership (very good investment and if I had to choose between this and Amazon Prime, I would go for the Premier Membership, but I digress). Anyway, I ended up getting the battery replaced. On the way home, every time I tapped my brake, the car emitted 3 low beeps. I called AAA as soon as I got home but there was nothing they could do for me other than tow the car to a repair shop. I will have it towed tomorrow and hopefully it will be resolved quickly and won’t cost an arm and a leg!

What a drag ? I don’t think we have premier coverage, but sounds like we need it! Our last car started smoking once on the LIE so my husband pulled over to the shoulder and we had to pay because the shoulder wasn’t an approved AAA area or somesuch ?

One tow pays for the membership. I probably could have shopped around and read the fine print on a myriad of financial products I use but I feel the cost of my time to do that is not worth the lower cost, if any.

I hope it’s something stupid that can be easily and cheaply fixed.
I drive really short distance so for many years I’ve been fine with some noname roadside assistance from my insurance company. But, I think, it is worth having some such service.

You could actually be better off with what your insurance company offers. I have USAA auto insurance which I got under a Friends program so my membership is very limited. That said, I will still look into it as the AAA Premier Membership has its own limitations.

    Hi all- happy Friday!

    1) Am in Escentric Molecule 2 (from a sample from LONG AGO, thanks to Fumerie) It’s fine. It’s cozy, one note skin scent of Ambroxan, plus copies of hedione and muscone- which is used in abundance in a few fragrances that I have tried: the BeautyPie fragrances, Fresh Cream Warm Cashmere, and a couple of Le Labo scents I cannot remember right now. The whole thing turns into the grounding ‘skin scent’ you find in the modern scents.

    2) Brunching weekend ahead: both at friend’s homes. No one wants to stand in line in the chilly rain and everyone is paying off bills, so cosy home brunches are the way to go.

    3) Speaking of money, I have decided to just go ahead and spring for a Pilates studio membership for 6 months. I was using a set package but I realized that I was really getting my groove back and I actually wind up saving a bit of cash by springing for a membership. My Gyrotonic classes though I will keep on a package basis, as I think the Pilates is more helpful.

I’m wearing Escentric 2 today. I bought this bottle in 2014 and it was the only bottle I owned for a year. Then I got a bottle of Hiris for my birthday.

I was thinking about how I was perfectly happy with one scent for a year, and then managed to get a 50 bottle collection by the end of 2018. I get perfume on my birthday, for Christmas, as vacation souvenirs or as a treat if I’ve had a bad week/ experience. Well, there haven’t been that many birthdays, Christmases or vacations in the last 4 years. Stress shopping is definitely my weakness. Hopefully, knowing this will help me avoid the kneejerk “I deserve this” response.

For me it’s more a matter of something being limited edition or discontinued or at risk of reformulation. I’m afraid if I don‘t buy it now I will never be able to. I never have had just one bottle, though, at least not since I was 10 years old. What happened when I fell down he rabbit hole is that my collection went from 10 or 12 bottles to over 100.

Messe de Minuit over my Encens Flamboyant shower gel. So happy it’s Friday and a three day weekend for me at that! No firm plans yet, but I may go to open houses on Sunday with my friend because she’s looking to buy her first condo in our neighborhood. I might put together a bag to take to Goodwill because my closet is overflowing and I realize I’m sick of some of my clothes.

I started out in some Paestum Rose, but it’s almost totally squashed under the layers. My Rien sample was in my purse so I dabbed some on my hand so I can sniff surreptitiously. Yum.
Glad to have a long weekend! Hope everyone is having a Good Friday!

I bought my bottle in 2007 or 2008. It still had the same packaging they used in the 1990s, so would guess it might be the same formulation as a 1990s bottle. Haven’t smelled the current version and not sure I want to.

    SJP Lovely.

At Ulta last night i tried the new (?) CK Woman. It was a musky something that i vaguely liked at first spray, but it dried down to nothing quickly and idon’t remember enough about it to describe more than that.
I did spray Chloe Nomade on the other arm shortly after that, and that was memorable, at least for the not very sweet berry note. It screamed for more oakmoss, though.
    Not planning on purchasing either.

I’m coming down with a cold but have a lot to do today so I’m ignoring the symptoms. It’s supposed to pour rain today so I’m ignoring that, too. I used to have a bottle of Etro Ambra but I think I swapped it, so for the CP I’m wearing The Exotic Perfumer’s Santal Exotique, my only “Little E” outside samples.

I’m so sorry to hear about Mary Oliver’s death–my favorite line of hers is in Sunrise and says “What is the name of the deep breath I would take, over and over, for all of us? It is happiness.”

I put on ELdO Like This today. Back when it first came out, I bought a bottle and wore it so much that I got a little tired of it. I set it aside for a while and now am liking it again. There isn’t a lot left in the bottle, but I’m not looking to thunk it. I want to keep it around a while longer.

    Fils de Dieu today.
Saw a patient in the afternoon, who smelled really nice, so i asked what she wore. She said it was an Arabian perfume, reached in her bag and put some of the perfume oil on my wrist to smell. It was something from Al Haramain, which was a bit flowery and musky and a pretty skin scent. Sadly forgot to look closely at the bottle.
Went to IKEA for a Kallax (perfume storage solution, as it has door, so the perfumes are in the dark) and also found a black and white carpet for the dining area.

For today’s CP, I’m wearing Escentric Molecule No. 1, only because it’s my only option for today’s project. I’ve had this Iso E Super aroma chemical sample awhile and, based upon what I’ve read about it, have never been tempted to try it until now. Like many reviewers noted, it smells like ‘nothing’ for quite awhile and I was willing to tolerate that as I looked forward to the cedary/woody note (a note I love) following later as other reviewers noted but am disappointed that all I get now is a faint musky note, no cedar or wood at all. Not being a huge fan of musk, this does nothing for me.

In the spirit of the season and waiting for the 6-10 inches of snow headed our way followed by bitterly cold temps, I think I’ll switch to one of my favorite winter fragrances, Guerlain AA Winter Delice. The past six months have been very busy and hectic for us, and with the holidays just behind us and all the decorations finally put away, I’m very happy to be tucked in for the long weekend with Mr. Laila, plenty of food/wine, several movies, my piano and dulcimer, his guitars, two cats, one kitten, lots of birdseed for our outdoor friends, and the latest Louise Perry. I love Armand Gamache and I love that the book opens with snow falling!

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend ahead, however you spend it. And heartfelt wishes and positive energies for better days ahead being sent to those of you who have suffered difficult times lately.

I just read that novel and enjoyed it more than other recent ones. I thought she’d become rather too “precious” lately–too full of pauses, short sentences, baited breaths, self-referential b.s., and so on. This one had more of an energetic pulse to it and a strong ending.

I am not participating out of frustration that I know I have a batch of bottles that are eluding me right now and several from Eau d’italie are in there. Upstairs is one closet that looks like the aftermath of a tornado and the box is surely somewhere in there. That is my project for the weekend. It’s also got old clothes. summer clothes, many pieces of financial information, my decanting supplies, old fancy shoes, you-name-it. It’s a big project but someone’s gotta do it. Meanwhile, I sprayed on some Camel and took Mom out to do some thrift shop shopping. We made some finds and bought bargains!! I got a gorgeous very large silk print scarf in shades of orange and yellow for the princely sum of $1.50, and Mom got a black shawl with red and metallic trim, in wool, for the same majestic price. We are happy campers, looking for a venue!

Robin, what a pretty and cheerful rose picture! I definitely appreciated it on this cold, grey, gloomy day.

SOTD = ELdO’s Fat Electrician, from the sample stash. Although I have to admit that Tam Dao was a serious temptation today. On the plus side, I think that Fat Electrician will be the next calming fragrance in my stash.

I heard/read earlier this afternoon that both PA and NJ are declaring states of emergency in anticipation of the horrid weather coming over the weekend. Stay safe and warm everyone!

I‘ve only just caught up with you here after a gloriously lazy Christmas & New Year holiday and the subsequent howling shock of work every day… and yippee, I‘m in tune with the project by accident: Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle Chypre Palatin!
I ordered a mini (12ml) because I reckoned my taste had probably developed sufficiently by now not to be put off by the “masculine“ side of what I remember as a deep, warm, rich, gloriousness … and it turns out it‘s been reformulated. Not a bit deep, warm, rich. Not bad either, but more like a vintage women‘s chypre leather.

If you know enough people who want the 12ml minis, I reckon it must be worth ordering from them direct, even from the US:
          http://parfumsmdci.free.fr/index.php?language=en&page&id=82

(Free set of five minis with any full bottle, incl. the unadorned bottles. Or order a set of five minis for 90 euros incl. shipping first and have the full cost deducted if you then buy a full bottle. AFAIK they put any minis you like in the set of five, doesn‘t have to be five different ones.)

Agree about those 12mls. Plus, the gentleman who runs (ran?) MDCI was amazingly nice. You don’t get service like that from any company these days. I bought a set and split them a decade or so ago just to keep one of the 12mls and later bought one bottle 3 years later, which is one of the treasures of my collection. It’s Un Coeur en Mai by Patricia Nicolaï, of PdN.

Adding— for those looking for a steal, there are sometimes very, very good deals on almost full bottles on eBay.

Strangely, I haven’t heard much about their last few releases.

Wearing my very last ELDO sample today, True Lust. Regrettably, neither appellation is accurate. This is another hybrid fragrance from this house that is a mixture of Putain des Palaces and Dangerous Complicity and is not as great as either. A vaguely rum, ginger, violet thing with a vaguely animalic finish. I am trying to not fall asleep here. One of drawbacks about free samples with purchases are that they are rarely the ones you want to try. I would still like to try Jasmin et Cigarette, Rien, Fils de Dieu and Like This. On the bright side, I used the entire sample of True Lust and Thunk!

Didn’t think about the project this morning when I put on HoM Trillium… just needed something comforting and uplifting for taking my littlest to the doc for a suspected measles rash (too young for the vaccine). Thankfully, it was a different virus with a similar rash. Scary before you know for sure, though! But it turned out to be a better day. Trillium definitely helped. No measles did, too. 🙂
