Friday scent of the day 9/21

Posted by Robin on 21 September 2018 384 Comments

Friday, plus, International Day of Peace and World Gratitude Day! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that fits.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am wearing the quietly happy Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré. I'd like to take a moment to say thank you to all the fantastic photographers over at Flickr that upload beautiful shots, and then license them in such a way that others can use them freely. While I'm at it, thanks to Creative Commons for facilitating the use of sharing licenses.

Reminder: on 9/28, wear a fragrance by Byredo, Berdoues or Bruno Fazzolari, if you have one. Partial credit for any other small-ish brand that starts with the letter B.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hi everyone, SOTD is Lauren cologne (vintage) by Ralph Lauren. Wearing an 80’s-themed scent to coordinate with seeing Journey, Foreigner and Def Leppard in concert tonight!
It’s a surprise for the hubby, Journey is his favorite band. I won’t be wearing shoulder pads but will have the big 80’s hair.

    Happy Friday!

Echoing Lillyjo — that’s a great surprise! Bring earplugs — if you were around for the first run of those bands, you can’t afford the damage ;-)

LLol, Robin good idea! After seeing Van Halen, Peter Murphy, NIN, U2, & Metallica concerts and a slew of other concerts, you’re right (I’m already as deaf as a post to begin with)! :)

I found out that other friends will also be at the concert, this will be a fun evening! Fortunately, I arranged to leave work a little early for a quick ‘disco nap’.

I bet you wear it beautifully!!! Did you ever try the original Dolce and Gabbana with the red cap? That also had a beautiful marigold note.

A few years back, we went to an 80s themed party. I got my curling iron out, and started curling like I did back in the 80s. It was amazing how it all came back to me. The curling, teasing and hairspray :)

I am in Chanel Coco EdT , thanks to a very generous NSTer

I think that Chanel perfume is a very peaceful perfume not because of the notes, because of how it makes me feel when I am wearing it. Coco makes me sit up straight, say thank you, act elegant, smile more at others and can takes me from day into the evening. IMHO

“Gratitude is the heart’s memory.” a French proverb – credit to Mutts comic strip for my daily entertainment.
    Seems perfect for today.

Here are 2 more from same:
    DAILY QUOTE
“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.”
    Cicero

    …and:
Gratitude is the sign of noble souls
    Aesop

so I am grateful for my family (both present & past) my friends, my health, music, flowers, birdsongs and of course you all.

    SotD = CdG Avignon

I love Avignon, on the FB wish list it goes. It smells rich, luxurious, like the inside of an old and important place. I don’t have incense-church memories, so it feels grand castle or manor house. Reminds me of laddm but Avignon is indoors, laddm is outdoors. Interesting.

I’m eating a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon and almond milk topped with an egg over hard (broken yolk cooked firm). After years of being almost-all-veggie-all-the-time, a recent craving for eggs has me puzzled. Oh well.

Happy Friday, y’all smell great. Looking forward to reading everyone’s picks today. Peace and Gratitude are Important to me. Gratitude is the heart’s memory.

Gorgeous photo, Robin, and very nice shout-outs (or is “shouts-out” more grammatically correct?) to those who make your blogging life easier. For the CP I chose Kyoto, and expect I’ll be one of many others. :) I’m going through my decant steadily enough that a full bottle (or canister, in this case) is definitely in my future.

Also very grateful that my head cold of this week is gone!
So, wore SL Fleurs d’Oranger yesterday pm once I could smell again, as I love its OPTIMISM. For me it is a happy scent. (And my bottle must be older and still have lots of cumin, as my neighbour said that I smelled lovely, “a bit Indian.”)
Started today with Eau d’Lalique, then swiped some Sel de Vetiver from the hubby’s closet.

    Hello all!

I’m in Iris Ukiyoe today, which I find both clean and centering. If I had been allowed to wear perfume to my Japanese tea classes, I would have worn this. And not just because of the name!

And as for gratitude? I’m grateful that I can find testers of some of my pricy favorites, which is the only reason I can own a bottle of Iris Ukiyoe in the first place. ;)

I am in Le Labo Ambrette 9, which makes me feel very peaceful and relaxed. My gratitude to NSTer Katrina from whom I got the full bottle 2 years ago on my first swapmeet here. I love and enjoy this perfume greatly every time I wear it. Hoarding the little bit is left.

I have been wearing this as a bedtime scent for spring and summer. I find it to be really calming. After tonight I will switch to something else for fall and winter.. maybe. Hi friends! I’m wearing Dzing!, which feels like it matches the CP but I don’t know why. I do know that very dry perfumes feel more peaceful to me.

Thanks for your comforting/commiserating words about my possible perfume rash yesterday. Gonna avoid chest spraying for a few days, but I already miss it – my usual spray pattern is back of the wrist and middle of the chest, because I like to both be able to put my wrist up to my nose for a close sniff, and the enveloping aura of a scent inside my shirt. Ah well, as my husband said when I was freaking out that I might develop horrible skin sensitivities that ruin my favorite hobby – “there are lots of ways to enjoy perfume.”

I think it might have been She-Ra (?) who mentioned trying an experiment last summer of *not* spraying the chest to test whether it was causing anosmia throughout the day.

I tried the same and actually only spray my arms, except during sweater season. I’ve actually found that when I do spray my neck/behind ears/decollatage, that soon enough I can’t smell those areas so it just seems like a waste of perfume.

Interesting! My chest spray usually lasts the longest, probably because it gets on my clothes.

I think what Kpaint meant (correct me if I’m wrong) is that by having it front and center, and on your clothes, you end up with more olfactory fatigue — one of the arguments for why people who wear the same scent all the time end up wearing too much of it.

I had a particular perfume cause irritation last year—one that was on my FB list, too. I tried it again last month, and it was fine, so maybe it was either a fluke, or a reaction to the perfume plus, say, sunlight. You might give that particular scent a rest for a lengthy spell and then try it again. Otherwise you might note the ingredients in case you have a reaction to something else, so you can pinpoint what caused it.

Very comforting, Laurels, thank you! And Salome is totally on my FB list so I hope my experience is similar. I had had a flu shot the day before so I’m hoping, without any basis in science, that it was related to that ????

Wearing Hyacinth and a Mechanic, the peace and harmony that can be found among very disparate elements. I am grateful that my water damage remediation has begun, though the constant sound of the dryers and blowers is getting on my nerves. So sorry. Everything changes in the house after a loss of a pet. After my last dog passed, I was vacuuming and when I went to empty the dirt cup, it was mostly dog hair and I just broke down crying. Wish I could give you warm hug!

I’m testing out a sample of Xerjoff’s Bouquet Ideale today. It’s cooled off a bit, so I’m wanting something a bit warmer and cozier. Like so many of my tobacco scents, it makes me think of my grandfather, to whom I was very close. He quit when I was three, but my mom and I lived with my grandparents, aunts, and great-grandmother until I was four, so some of my earliest and most comforting memories involve the smell of pipe tobacco. I’m so grateful for scents like this one that can invoke those happy memories. (This is also why I have a soft spot for Shalimar and Chanel No. 5, even though they don’t work so well on my skin – my GG wore them all the time.)

    SOTD: L’Air de Desert Marocain

Peace for me is an inner thing but fragrance does sooth and help, as do other things of course, in giving a feeling of peace. I think L’Air de Desert Marocain is one of my more peaceful scents. Ethereal is probably too strong of a word to describe this, but that’s what comes to mind.

    Happy Friday all!

    Gorgeous pic, Robin!

    SOTD = Guerlain Cuir Beluga

Scent-phone friendly. I am on a bus winging its way to Washington DC for a short getaway.

In the uncertain chaos of the days before my dad passed (December 2014) and for weeks thereafter, Cuir Beluga gave me peace and comfort. Gratitude – he left a lasting legacy of generosity and selflessness. I am showing my gratitude by paying it forward.

In other news, as I mentioned, I am on my way to DC. We stopped at a rest stop in Delaware that had all the usual food places, a somewhat unusual Pret a Manger (I somehow don’t associate Pret with rest stops), a mini convenience store AND, get ready for it…ready? Are you sure? Really really really sure? A PERFUME BOOTH! A quick look confirmed mostly mainstream. But how cool is that?

The perfumes I brought include: No. 19, No. 5 L’eau (my super cute 35 mL bottle), Kilian Woman in Gold sample spray (will be thunked), Mugler Aura EDP and Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant.

SOTD is Satori from my new 1/2 bottle ???? I guess the name would qualify for the CP today, but the scent is sublime: spare, smooth, understated, and graceful are how I would describe it. Also a meditative scent. It’s my new wood/spice/incense obsession.
Grateful for lots of things in my life, and when I’m not feelin’ it, I’m grateful my chosen profession helps put things back into perspective.
Hope everyone has a peaceful weekend ????

Thanks Petunia! Nice to have a partner in crime ???? Spraying does help it last somewhat longer- I sprayed last night and I could still smell it in the morning, but I showered this am and my skin is cleaner/drier so it faded faster. Dirty skin is the best for longevity, I find…

In Shalimar Initial today – this was sent to me as a lovely, unexpected surprise by fellow NST’er kpaint, so I am very grateful to her!
Thanks also to all the people who take time to answer questions, who include lovely notes and little samples to make opening a package extra fun, and who spontaneously offer decants or samples just because they’d like to share their love for perfume – this is, as many have said, a pretty lovely corner of the web!

These include still being in my right mind (mostly), continence (except when I laugh too hard), my lovely van which is 95% done, my faithful 4 legged companion (not really faithful, she’ll go off with anyone who gives her attention or a milk bone!), the intrepid van man who only lost patience with the van one time (at least that I witnessed!), cool mornings that will lead to cool days, having my next contract signed to take me through winter, and last but not least, beautiful perfumes, the pleasure of which is greatly enhanced by the NST community. Great people hang out here. Also grateful to you, Robin, for creating such a unique place!

Early morning meeting again, so I was in Twilly to be pleasant smelling.

And gratitude to Spectrum for arriving on time and seemingly fixing our internet issue. New modem and router. Minor tension when my husband discovered he had to clear a path in the bedroom for the guy to replace a splitter. He was embarrassed by the mess on his side of the bed. The good news is he used the vacuum there after the cable guy left… off to the post office to mail cards and letter and swap package.

Oh! I switched to the Trésor from the swap. Quite peaceful.

    I’m always grateful. Many blessings.

He commented that the Dyson was the best $$$ we ever spent. Probably because I do a quick pass pretty much every day, and he’s gotten to avoid our old, bigger vacuum.

The embarrassment was the price he paid for ignoring my requests to please, please please clean up over there.

I chose Pd White for the cp. White is associated with positivity, purity, light, goodness, humility, sincerity, spirituality, humility and softness, etc.; All things that lend themselves to peace. I thought it was really a good fit for today’s project. White is also the color of a surrender flag! ✌

Having one of those WHAT ON EARTH was all fuss about this perf— oooohhhhh. Ahhhhhhh… Hmmmm…. I see… perfume days. Tried this one several times and never thought much of it. Today it is GORGEOUS. Naja by Vero Profumo–I think that this one was a favorite of Deva’s?

Gratitude for too many things to note here. Suffice it to say that I feel exceedingly fortunate.

World Peace Day? Really? Gosh, I have been working with UN documents and peace and security issues for decades, but World Peace Day has never made a dent on anything. So I shall observe it by trying to recognize my personal prejudices, phobias, snobberies, bad decisions, bad parenting choices, and laziness.

World peace? Having a day for it is like watering a dying garden with tears. The tears might feel cathartic, but they do nothing for the garden.

I think I’ve figured out why I feel vaguely sorry for entitled people and it’s because they don’t have gratitude: even if they get everything they feel they deserve, they take it as their due and it doesn’t make them happy.

My salute to today’s peace theme is the very appropriate Bond No. 9 Scent of Peace from a bonbon I’ve had a long time but never tried. Luckily, for me, the initial grapefruit note – a scent note I dislike – dissipates quickly as the black currant – a note I’ve always enjoyed – makes its presence felt. I’m not getting any LOTV and it hasn’t reached its cedary -another favorite note of mine – drydown yet.

I’ve read this fragrance was created to commemorate the 9/11 tragedy, so since that sad anniversary has only recently passed a few weeks ago, this scent is even more appropriate. And with all the divisiveness so prevalent in our country and the world, a scent that brings thoughts of peace is welcome.

I must admit, though, that I’m searching for a bit of peace today and hoping I’ll feel a bit of gratitude before the day ends. Due to family and various other reasons, it was a very hectic and somewhat stressful summer. I was so looking forward to a slow return to normalcy and the comfort of abandoned routines beginning this week. But Someone’s plan for me was different. Early Monday morning, after investigating birdlike-yet-not-quite-birdlike sounds outside several times, I found what appears to be a 3-week old female kitten wailing pitifully. Well, you can guess the rest of the story. While there had been a mom and a nest of kittens recently in a neighbor’s yard a distance away, all had vanished. Supposedly. Although I’ve had kittens and cats for many years, I’ve never had one so small. Several frantic phone calls and a trip to the pet store, armed with kitten formula and a baby bottle, I’ve now embarked on a new adventure. The burden of being responsible – at least for now – for so tiny and previous a life weighs heavily on me and I’m taking it day by day for now. It’s Day 5 and Little Bear (because she looks like a tiny little black bear).appears to be thriving. She’s brave, curious, friendly . . . and beautiful. Fingers crossed she continues to do well . . .

It may be fabulous but it’s strange! Two summers ago, 2 days before we were leaving for a long weekend away, I saw a black mother cat and 3 small kittens playing outside our bedroom window. We then found their nest in a small outdoor shed nearby and left them food. The neighbors we exchanged pet-sitting services with agreed to leave them food in our absence and the plan was, as soon as we came back, to try and get all of them to a shelter. And the very next day they all disappeared, and we assumed that mom moved the nest. This occurred several times and in several places that summer and the next: a black mother cat was spotted, then a nest was found but the nest was moved before anyone could do anything about it. All the kittens were black and as summer turned into fall they were occasionally spotted in various places, down the block, around the corner, here and there. In the winter, they all disappeared; we assumed they either moved on or died in the cold. But then next summer came and the same events occurred: always a black mother cat, always black kittens, and then they all disappear in the winter. And, strangest of all, we’ve never seen a ‘father’ cat, ever! Those of us who have cats keep them indoors, so a new outside cat in the neighborhood would be noticed right away. How weird is all that?

You can do it!! It’s hard work, but oh so rewarding. They look like such fragile little things at that age, but their spirits are strong. If you keep her, you will have a bond with her like no other.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Best of both worlds would be my neighbor with whom I’ve exchanged pet-sitting services adopts her. She lost her 20-year old cat recently and, although she said they don’t plan on getting another cat, her teenage daughter really wants one so, one can only hope! I have two 3-year old cats, sisters, one of whom is wise and gentle, the other is a hellion and extremely jealous of attention paid to others, even to my granddaughter. So I’m not wanting to add another cat to the household at this time. Plus I’ve been wanting to adopt a shelter dog but for various reasons have had to delay pursuing this action. So, we’ll see . . . My past experience with cats is they usually show up in my life when I’m not looking for one!

I am grateful for spring and all the trees, plants, birds and insects that I encounter each day on my walks and the quiet miracles they perform as they grow, flower, nest build and buzz about. I was watching a man in the gardens holding a baby in his arms yesterday. They were standing beneath a flowering cherry tree in full blossom and the man kept reaching up and shaking the branch and the blossom fell like large pink confetti onto the baby ( about one year old) who was laughing and giggling with pleasure and excitement.
Thanks Robin for NST which has been a constant source of pleasure and distraction and information.

With birds alone, I can see everything from hummingbirds and vermilion flycatchers to Harris’s hawks and great horned owls on a daily basis. I’d never get that variety in a more urban neighborhood.

That Harris’s hawk has wonderful colouring and how interesting that they hunt in packs. We have an australasian harrier hawk in the pines next to our house -it must be about 15 years old. Also ruru ( morepork) a native owl. And I’m waiting for the shining cuckoo to turn up from its migration from the Solomon Islands…any day now!

    Hooray, it’s Friday!

    I’m in N°5 EDP.

I chose it in a roundabout way. I was contemplating what to wear last night and off the top of my head couldn’t think of anything in my collection that explicitly references peace or gratitude. As I was starting to delve into which perfumes make me *feel* peaceful or grateful, I was struck by the idea of using the language of flowers as a guide. I settled on dark pink roses, which symbolize gratitude/thankfulness. From there it was pretty easy: dark pink roses -> rose de mai -> Grasse -> Chanel -> N°5.

Here’s to gratitude. Here’s to peace. And here’s to a lovely weekend for you all, NSTers. ???????? ????

    22:30 CAT.TGIF!
I’m greatful for awesome friends,a great job,a beautiful apartment, and having “just enough” of things…clothing…food…perfume. My life is peaceful, and I made sure to cut out most of the noise from it,be it so-called friends, and even family members.
SOTD!Chanel No.5 Parfum. What can go wrong on a day wearing this?Nothing.I had a wonderful Friday, changing my apartment from “Winter wardrobe” to “Spring/Summer 2018/2019”.My Mother taught me this, that like with your wardrobe, you change the look and feel of your home seasonally as well.Summer curtains, fresh scatters,a lighter throw on the bed.It all feels fresh and ready for Summer!
    What a week!
We have an extra long weekend, not working on Fridays and Monday is a public holiday.P(the bestie) is coming over for a swim and a barbeque tomorrow till Sunday. We always have fun together, even if we just talk crap till 3am.
    Be well friends!
    Peace!✌????✌????????❤️

I do the same at home on every season. Curtains, tablecloths, placemats, bed and bath clothing, cushion covers, kitchen towels, etc, etc, etc. It is so refreshing and revitalizing,
Your weekend sounds perfect! Enjoy it! ❤????

Just a quick hi because my time is being fully occupied by doing things to help my mom get more acclimated to her new senior apartment, checking on medications and home health workers, assessments, etc. We did have a fun outing to a beautiful shop with antique quilts and I bought one! Grateful my mom can still enjoy many things and has a sense of humour. You can see my quilt here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94283635@N00/30958182448/in/dateposted/. (Mom is a few shots away in my photo stream there too in the same shop.) (I’m one of the bad Flickr photographers, sorry, should share more.) I’m wearing the beautiful extravagant Indult from Isvarya just to get a lift from it.

Gorgeous quilt — and it looks to be in fantastic condition.

And hey, did not mean to make anybody feel bad for copyrighting their photos. There are all kinds of good reasons NOT to share, I do get that, not least being if you post a lot of pictures of your private life and don’t necessarily want them floating around the webs :-)

Wearing Lush Breath of God today.I find it to be a scent that grounds me in the rush of everyday life.
My other favorite scent when I think of peace is The Body Shop White Musk.Unfortunately, the current version is nowhere near the scent I first purchased years ago and I have none of my older bottles left.If I had known they would destroy it I would have stocked up!!

I feel exactly the same about the Body Shop White Musk. I have the perfume oil from I think 2006 that I’m hoarding

Oh you guys, I’ve been trying to post all day but keep getting busy. I am so grateful for the weekend right now! One more hour of work to go.

I’m being literal and wearing Olympic Orchids Peace. It has notes of New Caledonian sandalwood, frankincense, cedar, and some other good stuff.

I didn’t get a chance to post yesterday but I wore Bas de Soie from a decant gotten from the swap meet. I so enjoy that one.

Well, I was very pleased with myself for remembering at the last minute, despite my frazzled rush, that it was Friday, and thus I am wearing… one of my Top Ten of Fall perfumes, Mauboussin Histoire d’Eau. (Whoops.) Mandarin orange, myrtle, and leather. Leather always says fall to me, and the perfume itself is a perfect blend of warm and cool, excellent for a change of seasons. I wish they would bring this one back. It is perfectly unisex, by any standard, and I think it would do better now than it did at the time.

Now that I think about it, despite my being a week behind on the theme, it will work for World Gratitude Day as well. (Maybe also International Day of Peace— I mean, if everyone smelled this good, it would help the cause.) I bought this bottle of HdE, gently used, from Karin, a fellow NSTer, along with a bottle of Roberto Cavalli Oro, one of my Top Ten of Everything. She was moving, and threw in a bunch of extras. I am very grateful for the perfume community, a bunch of lovely and generous persons, and for Robin and NST, who allow me to be a part of it, despite my refusal to join Facebook. I was reminded by the recent Swapmeet of what a privilege it is to interact with all of you. I don’t post as often as I used to, and had to give up trying to read every post on all my favorite blogs, but I want to thank you all for being here. Hey, if we ran the world, we might have peace. ???? Now I feel fully on theme.
