Friday scent of the day 9/14

Posted by Robin on 14 September 2018 421 Comments

Friday finally rolls around again! (Unfortunately, bringing Florence with it.) Our community project for today: wear one of your "top 10 of fall" fragrances (unless it's spring where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of spring" scents).

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

It's not really fall yet where I live, so I went with an old transitional favorite: Dzongkha by L'Artisan Parfumeur. I only thought of it because Coumarin and Mayfly wore it yesterday.

Reminder: 9/21 is the International Day of Peace *and* World Gratitude Day. Wear a fragrance that fits.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I don’t have any specific fall fragrances but I’m choosing to wear Bortnikoff’s Bonheur this morning. I’m in a mood for a calm resinous vetiver labdanum scent which happens in the mid and basenotes for this fragrance.

Hi all, SOTD is Chanel’s Coromandel, incense and woods, absolute heaven. 🙂

Breakfast is kefir/spinach/lime/mango smoothie w/ Cuban espresso.

I found this healthy lunch salad recipe on Food52, Kale & Bulgur Salad with Brown Butter Apple Vinaigrette. We made it to Friday! *happy dance*

Undina, yep, Pacifica is normally 10-15 degrees cooler than the rest of Northern California.
Of course, in one week, we’ll hopefully have our two-week ‘summer’. Usually when Fog Fest (local street fair) comes around, the weather is sunny and warm. 🙂

I am wearing Chanel No. 5 EDP. It is very hot today, and we truly do not experience autumn here until late October, usually. Sometimes in November, I am still wearing shorts.

But No. 5 would smell great on a crisp autumn morning, so I chose it.

Sometimes I envy the four distinct seasons in other places. I do love our winter though. It is very mild, most of the time. Last year it snowed for a few days and it got very icy. This was not normal for us. I know after that experience that I am not cut out for harsh winter weather.

Thank you Aurora! Gathering Apples is just the plain smell of a fresh, juicy apple. No more than that. Forbidden Games is more complex. A creamy, fruity, floral scent with a vanilla, honey base.

It is not feeling like fall here either today, so I am going with one of my top ten anytime fragrances: Le Labo Bergamote 22.
On my agenda for today is baking a banana cake with chocolate frosting for my youngest. She is a teenager today!???? Not quite sure how that happened. This is her first birthday as an “only” child, as her older sibs are away at college. This means an entire cake for 3 people. I’m not sure if this would be considered a good, or a bad thing?!
    Happy Friday everyone!

I had one of Bendel’s Gardenia candles that was nice. That store has been strange for a number of years…it used to have interesting scents. And I liked the brown/cream striped makeup bag I had years ago.

I’m not surprised it’s closing. I do actually have a number of their own brand scents. Should dig them out. There’s a summer one I still quite love. I got them all on deep sale.

Sad news. I’ve been to NYC around Christmas time, and I enjoyed their window decorations. I have a brown and white striped make up bag a friend gave me for my birthday a few months ago, and I love the HB pattern.

        Please do. ????

They are both lovely. I find them quite similar but I may prefer the extrait a bit more. I really enjoy trying to find differences when comparing perfumes but these are very close to my nose. I think tnI extrait is a bit sweeter and more feminine perhaps and the EDP a bit more masculine in comparison.

I’m in a sample of Mugler Les exceptiones woodissime.. nice but not $225 dollars a bottle nice. It is already very cool at night here in the mountains but days are still warm. I just blind bought a bottle of Etro sandalo and am hoping it will be a nice comforting cashmere sweater type of perfume to wear this fall. A bottle of Cartier declaration EDT is on the way too! I highly recommend fragrancex for a grey market discounter.. their prices are a little higher than other sites but their shipping is lightning fast.

You express how I feel about the entire Les Exceptiones line. In a lot of ways, I feel Mugler delivers more interesting work in its mass market fragrances. Cartier Declaration is sublime. 2nd your recommendaiton of FrangranceX! 🙂

I liked chyprissime the best but I already own diptyque tempo which does the powdery lipstick patchouli thing better in my opinion, and at $60 a bottle less lol.

Wearing Botrytis and trying to decide how to use a $50 gift debit card. Should I buy a bunch of samples, put it towards a reasonably priced scent (like Botrytis) or trawl eBay for whatever strikes my fancy?

Hmmmmm…. Was the gift card a gift? Or is it more random type of refund that you just have to make sure that you use.

If it’s a gift – maybe use it for something you would enjoy but is more of a splurge and outside your budget – like the EBay trolling or a more a less $50 scent from a discounter

But if it’s more of a credit for something you already purchased, maybe use it for something within the lines of your perfume budget – like the samples or the Botrytis if you were def going to get that

It’s a little muggy, but not terribly warm this am. I went with Hendley Amora, mostly because I needed something brightly colored and cheerful in this endless sea of grey days. I like this one better in cooler weather even though it smells like summer stone fruits of the red variety. But it has a stewed, dense quality, with just a hint of wine-y rose along with a bit of ambergris giving it a bit of a chewiness that makes it a nice transitional weather scent. Love it!

Wearing Atelier Cologne Santal Carmin. Sampled for first time earlier this week & am in love. Usually, heavy, creamy sandalwood, a la Samsara, can bring on the migraine like a mo fo. Not here. Lime, saffron, cedar, papyrus, white musk & vanilla create a beautiful, non-linear journey. Almost effervescent at first, then sweet & spicy in the end. 1oz bottle now on the way. If I go through it still wanting more, that 6 oz gigantor bottle’s going on my Christmas list. 🙂

Stunning photo! Beautiful send off to a rather wacky week.

SOTD is BoE, perfectly appropriate for revisiting a reclaimed wood business here in town. I went yesterday and found a live edge slab I would love to use as a counter/work space. I’m meeting the van man there this morning to see how he feels about it. I’m thinking he’s gonna be A-OK working with it!

BoE is a perfect choice for fall. BTW, where is fall?
Love the idea of a counter with a live edge for your van project. It will be so cozy once it’s done. Plus, it will probably smell great unless you seal it.

“Where is fall” is an excellent question! I will say that the temps here have toned down a bit and it’s been in the high 70’s/low 80’s this past week. The mornings are leaning towards fall but not there yet. Yes, the slab would need to be sealed, but it’s a moot point because I didn’t get it. The slab itself was financially doable, but what the shop charged for milling doubled the price. So no go. I’m sad, but I’ll get over it. ????

So sorry that the slab idea didn’t work out. I hope you find something you like even more.
My husband made our wood counters out of maple. They are really pretty. I wonder if you could get something like that or possibly butcher block.

Yep, this was a maple slab too! But alas, I must be somewhat financially responsible. It’s difficult to adult…I bet your counters are amazing! I love wood for countertops. So much warmer than stone.

    Happy Friday!

    1) Florence! Yikes, the flooding! Please be well.

    2) SOTD: Cuir de Lancome, which I must dole out in tiny sprays, since it is discontinued! But it really is rather perfect for chilly fall weather. My absolute fave is Boucheron, which I wore earlier this week.

    3) I also cleaned my hair with….WEN hair cleansing conditioner. I ordered it while late night tv watching and drowsy, It’s the fig scent, which is rather sweet but nice, and seems meld well with CdL and would also meld well with other perfume scents. But I rinsed VERY well and the scent persisted, so keep that in mind.

As to performance : It is exactly what it says on the bottle- cleansing your hair with lotion or conditioner, but somehow lighter than that. Reminds me of DevaCurl No poo products. After diffusing with a blow dryer I got perfect second day hair. Detangling was a breeze. Nice curl definition. My time in the shower was actually rather quick. I would use this every few days and use shampoo once a month for any build up.

I really DISliked it when I used it but probably because I was doing it wrong. I didn’t know I still needed to condition after cleansing. Deep

That said, I’ve been co-washing for a few years now and it’s solved a multiplicity of problems with my scalp and hair.

Yeah, I think this is the issue with a lot of WEN/DevaCurl customers- it’s not a 2 in 1. I still used a leave in conditioner and a styler to do the Afro this morning.

When I do cowash, I do notice that hair is not stripped feeling, my curls feel really silky and my hair has a subtle sheen. Gonna give it the full three-four months (that’s how much supply I have!)

It is RATHER pricey and I blame drowsy late night viewing! But it was on special – a big bottle and a normal sized bottle, plus deep conditioner and a hair oil, then THAT was spread over payments of 4, so not so hard on the pocketbook.

Ahhh… CdL is really a perfect fall scent. I didn’t choose it today, because the bottle is tucked in the cabinet. But…if it were cooler here, I’d be joining you. You smell gorgeous.

I like Wen. The formulations do matter…Tea Tree is what works for me. I stopped using it because I ordered a bunch of the bamboo one on special and didn’t like it. Too rich for my fine hair. Maybe I’ll drag it out again just to use it up. QVC often has good specials,, especially when the main guy is on. (My sister loves the fig…she has thick, coarse but straight hair.)

I really love CdL and getting it when I did was such a coup! It was a cool damp morning and so it seemed perfect! 🙂

I almost got the Tea Tree, but the Fig seemed intriguing and i like it. I have medium thick, kinky curly hair that I wear medium short. It was easy to detangle and after rinsing did not feel stripped at all, but still very clean. I think that Tea Tree would be lighter and fresher, especially if I was still doing hard cardio exercise.

The main guy was on and he had his models- really fun!

Methinks Safran Troublant and T42 together would smell like chai tea as well. Maybe I’ll try this tomorrow…err it is already tomorrow…I shouldn’t have had that cold brew at 3pm!

Hi dear friends, hope those of you in the southeast are staying safe and dry! Not participating in the CP; Music for a While on one wrist and Bal d’Afrique on the other, testing out samples from my first swapmeet package 🙂 I don’t think I like MfaW at all. It’s…caustic. Bal d’Afrique is lovely, though!

I feel like the lavender drowns out the pineapple for me! And I got what I thought was citrus but might just be the acid of the pineapple, which is the worst thing about the pineapple smell.

Yup, that’s a perfect description of the pineapple–fermented! (A kinder description than “I left it on the counter too long and the bottom rotted.”)

          15 September 2018 at 12:16 am

Unless it is cooked down to mush with lots of stuff added to it, eating pineapple blazes a trail of acid all the way down to my stomach so I avoid it.

Hahaha! Oh no! I will suggest that you try pineapples on the west coast or–better–in Hawaii. I grew up with east coast pineapples that burn your lips and mouth and throat with their acid, but when I moved to Hawaii, I found the pineapples to be very low acidity, but with at least as much flavor and sweetness. CA pineapples are also relatively low acidity. So I think you must get–what–Floridian pineapples? that are higher acidity.

The longevity seems ezcellent for a natural perfume and sillage is just right – it bloomed on me in our recent muggy weather. There is truly something irresistible about this.

Hi Petunia, it is predominantly incense- of african origin ( the specifics are not listed and is not churchy. It is fresher, lighter – like the ligjr smoke from a fire that is burning the wood of an incense tree or maybe the smell of freshly cut wood of the same tree. It is never heavy or overwhelming.

The weather here has been of two halves: a fall feel in the air this am and this evening blue sky and fluffy white clouds. I picked Must de Cartier which I refer to as the green Shalimar.

Not fall here either – for now – so I’m trying to use up some things I pulled out for summer. Today is Amouage Bracken, which is quite nice but not something I’ll need more of.

I keep trying to get an idea of what kind of fall weather to expect here and getting non-committal answers LOL. I suspect there’s a bit of a communication breakdown as I’m coming from a region with 2 seasons, not 4. There apparently is a fall season here but it’s either short or long and not summer and not winter.

At any rate, it looks like temps will drop in a couple of weeks, so I’ll get to see for myself soon enough. And will have lots of gorgeous perfumes to choose from ????

You’re in Cleveland now right? I’m from northern Illinois, close enough to feel the lake effect in winter. I haven’t been in that kind of weather in years, and things may have changed, but I think preparing for bitter cold is a good idea. I know you hate cold weather, so I’m not trying to freak you out, but to prepare you. Bitter cold weather is uncomfortable at best, but if not prepared it can be demoralizing and crippling. Layer, layer, layer! Invest in a few good down and wool pieces, which will go a long way towards warding off the chill.

Fall in the Midwest can be fickle and unpredictable, which is probably part of the reason you are not getting good answers. For example: today we are 82, sunny and beautiful, but the “average” high is 72, with a record of 32 for the low and 96 for the high. Yes, days can vary by as much as 60 degrees! Gotta love the Midwest.????
I would second Deva’s recommendation of lots of wool and down. I think you will be loving your electric matress pad this winter!

Hi, all – I’ve been lurking and reading NST for a while, but I’m happy that I’m finally taking the plunge and commenting!

Today, I’m wearing Elizabeth & James Nirvana Amethyst. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the later Nirvana editions, especially this one. It’s a dry tobacco, grounded with a little honeysuckle and vanilla. It’s nowhere near as ashtray-like as ELdO’s Jasmine et Cigarette, but it’s definitely a little smoked. Tobacco as a whole is one of my top fall scents – I’m looking forward to it cooling off enough to wear Tobacco Vanille! My fondness for these scents never fails to amuse me, since I’ve never smoked in my life. Happy Friday, everyone 🙂

Hudson Market at 57th and 11th Ave. I just wandered in there once earlier this year and bought their Kona Blend (house brand…they roast their own coffee). The main reason I keep buying it is that it’s one of the few both I and my husband like…and it’s not hideously expensive.

I was debating between Cuir de Russie and Bois des Iles and went with the former.
We all probably came across those perfumes that we like theoretically but don’t really wear because they do not smell the way we think of them when we put them on. Cuir de Russie for me is even a stranger animal: I do not wear it too often because in between wearing it I think that it is of that kind that I described above, but then every time I do wear it, I realize that I actually love it. I should probably attach a post-it to my bottle “I enjoy wearing it” – so I’m reminded of it when I look selecting what to spray.
    Happy Friday to everyone!

Late posting here, but it’s fun to read what everyone else is wearing. I’m in Tibetan Mountain Temple for the second day in a row. My bottle is almost finished, and I’m sad that I won’t be able to get it anymore, but I guess that leaves more room for exploring other scents. Nothing lasts forever – and I guess that’s the lesson of fall.

    Wow! Over 200 comments already!

SOTD = Angel Muse + L’AP Safran Troublant

Wowzers! Separately NSTers mentioned each of these perfumes. As I commented to Deva yesterday, I had an aha moment with this layering and w00p w00p with the results❣️

Those of you who know me, IRL and virtually, know I speak my mind. I work in an organization where transparency is important (although not always followed). An incident occurred where I could have confronted my boss about something he didn’t do (not sure why). I found out his omission through the grapevine and the only way I could bring his attention to something I noticed was wrong (small but very visible) that needs to be corrected ASAP was to tell him about his embarrassing omission. He is on vacation so my only choice was to go to his boss which I had to do to correct an issue. I’m sure he will be told about the error of his ways and there is absolutely nothing he can fault me with for going to his boss and I am very curious as to how he will explain himself. Anyway, I will find out on Tuesday.

Yay for Angel Muse which I have long threatened to get a FB of but haven’t and double yay for taking care of work business regardless of who (in this case your boss) erred.

I’ve kind of been in Terminator/take no names and dispense corrective actions as needed mode more than usual the past couple weeks for some reason myself. ???????? Let us know how it unfolds. Many days my mission at work is to encourage other people to do their best work by any means necessary…and to smell great. ????

I hope it resolves without any fallout for you. I wonder, in these cases where it seems so obvious, if it was simply an oversight.

Well, what I do is visible to my boss’s manager so fallout will be reported. In any case, he got a phone call immediately because there was a voicemail when I got back from lunch. We spoke but it’s not resolved. I have a 1:1 with his manager every 2 weeks and knowing him, he will ask if I felt it was resolved. Let’s see if my boss can redeem himself.

Hope everything works out at work. I have spent way to much energy in my jobs trying to protect people, and in the end, it didn’t matter. You really have to look after yourself. Any resolution on the credit card issue?, oh and half twins today!

One of my former managers said no one will put me as No.1 priority except myself. It is so true.

Nothing yet on the credit card. I’ll be reviewing the last statement (to come) from the old account and do a little bit of detective work to see if I can trace back from where it may have been compromised.

And yay on being half twins!

The weather is not quite ready for my fall line-up, but I’m plunging ahead in the hopes that I can usher in some cooler temps.

I’ve lavishly spritzed on some PG Praliné de Santal. This is what I had hoped SL Jeux de Peau would be (which perfume did not work out for me) – rich, spicy, sugary-but-not-too, and nicely anchored by woods.

We’re having a beautiful stretch of weather here in the Midwest – warm, sunny, non-humid 80 degree days and cool, clear nights – so I’m also in a transitional favorite rather than a fall favorite, Fendi Theorema Leggero. Frangratica lists its notes as: top notes are mandarin orange and pepper; middle notes are pink pepper, freesia, and LOTV; base notes are

sandalwood, musk and cedar (computer gremlin posted this prematurely!) For me, it has just the right balance of freshness from the orange and a subtle hint of fall’s delicious spiciness.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend and hoping everyone in the path of Florence’s wake

OMG not even noon PST and there are 252 comments! What are you all talking about? I’ll read up after I post.

Fall fave 10 Corso Como is hitting the spot today. It is work appropriate if sprayed very lightly. I have had a decant of it for many years but have suddenly fallen in love with it, so I think it will get a lot of wear this season.

Thinking about the perfumes I have worn most over the past month as spring unfolds I realise I have returned to perfumes that seem ‘content’ rather than ‘ challenging’ . Maybe I’m getting soft or lazy in my old age ( the same would apply to clothing choices) but it could also relate to the fair bit of travel I have done for festivals and public talks recently which can be a but stressful and the fact that I am spending a lot of time alone, writing and need a quiet head. So most worn perfumes:
    Debaser
    Gabrielle
    Fiele Viola
    Mitsouko
    JM Primrose and Rye
Miss Dior (1947 but new bottle)
As each day progresses I spray one of these scents, so usually at least four of these will be layered eventually ( one every 2 or 3 hours ) and that seems to work in any combination of the above.

Crazy week and finally posting after 4 pm. Top 10 fall is SSS Champagne de Bois. It’s still hot here but I’m staying in the a/c. Looooong week – first week of preschool classes and we had two cancelled days – one for a power outage that lasted all day, and the other following a break-in at the church where we are located. Bizarre week. On the plus side my son’s team won their football game and I got to use my new zoom lens on the sideline – decent pictures, need to work on my technique. Happy weekend to all!

It’s not what I would consider fall weather where I am at, and I’d bet that several other commenters are in the same situation. It’s also another grey and gloomy day. I really am missing the bright shiny thing in the sky. ????☁

SOTD = L’Artisan Traversee du Bosphore, from the sample stash and a generous NSTer. This works well in both summer-ish and fall weather for me. ????????????????

The past couple of days were stupid-crazy-busy for me. The perfume to help me cope with it all was Cristalle EdT. My little sample is still hanging in there, ready to assist for the next round of crazy or doctor’s appointments, whichever comes first.

So perhaps already up above — I was perusing the Saks Fall 2018 catalogue and w00pie – the newest Le Labo is Tonka 25, available in October. I can see how delaying until after the city exclusives go home may make some people go back to the boutique BUT there may be others who make the annual trek when the city exclusives are available so it may not be until next September before Tonka 25 gets its full complement of audiences.

I’m super-late but have been in Michigan this week enjoying weather that’s in the 70s and 80s and not humid, beautiful blue skies, and glad I’m missing rain back home. My perfume the past several days and today has been Camel, which is fast becoming a real favourite, for this nice warm-ish weather and I bet for fall weather too (not that I see a lot of that).
