Friday scent of the day 9/7

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2018 279 Comments

It's Friday at last. (And rest in peace, Burt Reynolds.) Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with cedar, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Comme des Garçons + Monocle Scent Three: Sugi. It's been on my buy list since it came out in 2013 — I'm still waiting for that coffret of all three Monocle fragrances in travel size.

Reminder: on 9/14, wear one of your "top 10 of fall" fragrances (unless it's spring where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of spring" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It really feels like autumn today, so I can finally wear one of SL/Sheldrake cedars – Bois et Fruits. Yummy!

My current mood is a mixture of anixety, excitement and frustration.

On one hand, a British client made a bank transfer to me last Friday, and the money still has not reached my account. It’s in US dollars, and I’m in Ukraine, so the payment goes through at least one US intermediary bank. And Monday was a public holiday in the US, so maybe it’s just an ordinary delay. My bank says they received no payment, the client says they sent the payment to the correct bank details and advises to wait more… Sigh. It is frustrating that it takes so long and I am worried that the payment got lost somewhere between banks.
On the other hand, my new PC is about to arrive! Yay! My current one is about 6 or 7 years old and has become very slow, so I am very excited to get a new faster machine. I hope the whole setup and installation process goes smoothly.

Thanks, lillyjo. I hope it’s the holiday.
The payment is for work I did in July, it’s a new client, new currency for me, so maybe I am overreacting.

Probably the holiday, but press them on the details if it takes much longer. The good news is wires generally are found…and the money arrives.

Yes, the payment should either bounce back or reach my bank.
I’ve just got a proof of payment from the client, so now I have something to show to my bank.

Iris Silver Mist for me today. Not an obvious pick forcedar day, but it does contribute to that very dry feel. So lovely but I’m practically hoarding my bell jar. I wear it perhaps once a year.

    Have a great day everyone.

Those are great picks! I know I should wear it more but some combination of emotions makes it very hard for me to justify wearing it. For some reason, I lavish in my vintage collection, but wearing ISM is very hard. Thank goodness it hasn’t evaporated!

Cuban Coffee – I use a Moka pot by Bialetti:
Tips: use medium/low heat and be sure to watch it carefully. If the coffee is sputtering & hissing out out (vs. a slow gentle drizzle), the heat is too high and your coffee will be bitter.

*Choose your coffee beans (I like Lavazza).
*Fill a moka pot with coffee (do not tamp down the grounds, it prevents the steam going through the grounds) and place water in the bottom.
*Gently heat over medium-low flame. Watch the pot carefully!
*In an 8-oz glass cup, measure 2 teaspoons of brown sugar (use glass, not metal, metal reacts with the acidic coffee) and a tiny pinch of salt.
*When the coffee starts steaming thru the grounds, pour the first drops of coffee onto your sugar/salt mixture to make a thick paste.
*Whip the sugar, a tiny pinch of salt (counteracts the bitterness) and coffee together vigorously with a spoon until it lightens in color.
*When your coffee is done steaming, pour the rest of the coffee over your sugar mixture and stir. When done properly, your Cuban coffee will have a cream layer on top.
            Enjoy!

          7 September 2018 at 5:44 pm

Wow! This is fabulous! Where were you when I bought a moka pot five years ago? I tried to use it a few times and got horrible, bitter, grimy coffee, so I threw it out when I moved. I may have to get a new one and try your advice. This sounds great.

Done well, the coffee has a smooth, creamy/nutty/caramel flavor to it.
Let me know how it goes! And I got my Moka pot for 2 bucks at Goodwill, maybe check there first? :)

I planned to wear Cartier Déclaration but then was afraid the cedar and cumin notes might be too skanky for my coworkers, so instead I went with Trayee, which also has some cedar. Maybe I’ll wear Déclaration tonight- I really love it.

The 1st time I smelled Declaration was on a female coworker of mine and I loved it! I don’t think the sweaty notes project far really because I didn’t detect that aspect on her. I only noticed it when I sampled it on myself and smelled it up close-I was always hesitant to wear it for that reason, too.

I gave my bottle to a friend as I had issues with the sweaty notes. A few weeks later he told me he had worn it a few times and noticed the sweat too. Sad. It is a nice fragrance. I had the same issue with Bottega Venetta.

Wearing Chene. Happy Friday, everyone! I will spend it getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist, and then calling loads of service people for home repairs. After we returned from vacation we found that a critter (probably a raccoon) tried to claw its way into our attic and made a nice hole in our roof. And we had multiple heavy storms while we were gone, so we returned to a lovely mess. Lots of drywall is going to have to come down. Thank god for insurance.

I went with Io by Chris Rusak. I just got my sample set in the mail a couple days ago, and I’m pretty sure there’s some cedar in here, but I probably would’ve wanted to wear it regardless. It’s a very resinous and earthy scent, which I like a lot.

I like it a lot. It’s mostly labdanum to me (it tends to dominate on my skin when it’s present), but there is also a note that reads to my nose like fresh dirt, and I enjoy that.

I liked all 3 scents in the set, but this one, Io, and another one called QUA were my favorites. QUA reminded me a lot of a vintage Bal a Versaille sample I had a while back.

I’m in Bvlgari Omnia, le Original. Probably not in synch wirh the CP, but there it is.

Leaving work this morning, I walked to my van while watching dozens of hot air balloons lift into the sky. A beautiful sight first thing in the morning, which I found rejuvenating after two nights of utter nonsense. It was a beautifully clear morning and they rose against the backdrop of a rising sun shining on the sage covered hills. There are worse things in life.

The Van Man is supposed to be here today, so we’re meeting up at some point to discuss layout, pickup tongue-in-groove for the ceiling and walls, sheeps wool batting for insulation, a vary expensive AGM battery, and some other odds and ends to get the party started. Excited but also dreading the hard work we will be doing on top of my working nights and being all jacked up, circadian rhythm. Keeping my eyes on the prize of next summer in Alaska!

Denim attracts moisture, and then you get mold problems… sheeps wool is naturally resistant to moisture and mold, and if it does get wet, still maintains its insulation properties. Also, no chemicals to off gas, which can be a problem in such a small space.

How fun! There may be better insulation options for static homes, but with a van that is constantly undergoing minor earthquakes, conventional insulation is not the best. Fiberglass especially, because particles become airborne. This is the company we are going with because it’s local and has a great reputation. https://woolinsulation.com

I don’t really have any cedar-forward scents anymore, so I went with CdG Oarzazate which is plenty woody to me, and an added spritz of Cire Trudon Mortel which has some cedar in its listed notes. I also have a smidge of Blackbird Targa on the back of my hand just to test out since I love their Targa incense. It smells similar to SSS Fireside Intense to me. Nice! Saving it for Fall.

    Happy Friday!

    1) Scent twins with Robin. Thing to know about the CdGxMonocle offering: Since this is an exclusive branding agreement with CdG, it is HIGHLY unlikely that there will ever be a coffret. BACK a few years ago when Monocle had a store in Santa Monica they did have the soaps in a three pack (Hinoki, Laurel* and Sugi), exclusively offered to subscribers.

    2) This weekend will be a sort of autumn prep of the backyard- I wanna see if I can grow herbs and winter veg. And I have to ask my neighbors about figs, persimmons, Asian pears and plums.

I went with good ol’ Feminite du Bois, small spritzes for the office. When I wore it the other night I realized if I don’t go too crazy with sprays, then it has really low sillage and is shockingly work appropriate. I thought about wearing Stash today, but I’m not sure it’s ok for work. I might wear it as my SOTN later.

Happy Friday! This one came quickly with the holiday on Monday. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s swap meet. I’m also going to a vintage flea market, a monthly event in the industrial section of downtown Seattle. Hoping for some good finds and that it doesn’t rain too much.

Back to work today after 8 busy, travel filled days off. I have my Stanley filled with my favorite coffee.
Sotd is Diptyque Fleur de Peau. No cedar, but very work friendly imo.

For those of you that asked about yesterday’s sniff off between Eau Premiere and L’eau…this was my finding: they start off almost identical to my nose but as they dry down, the Eau premiere softens and has a soft vanilla presence whereas the L’ Eau retains more of the “sharpness” of the opening aldehydes. I have decided I prefer the Eau Premiere, which was also longer lasting on my skin.
Unfortunate considering I have a bottle of the L’ Eau.????

I must be missing something in L’eau, I don’t smell anything after the first five minutes. Eau Premiere is very strong on me though, and certainly lasts all day.

I liked Fleur de Peau when I tried it, but couldn’t picture a scenario where I wouldn’t be at least as happy wearing something else.

SOTD is my very favorite Yves Rocher oldie, Nature Millenaire (women’s). I love the cedar in this! It reminds me very much of Tauer’s LDDM but it came a long time before and at a fraction of the price. But that was prior to its being d/c, luckily I have a backup bottle as it’s quite expensive now if you can find it. I think the men’s was a favorite of Bear.

The NM cedar blends beautifully with the real cedar that surrounds me in the forest where I’m spending the weekend at a mountain music fest in the foothills of Appalachia. A beautiful setting + beautiful traditional music = peace. We literally stumbled upon both this place and this fest on the way home many years ago and return whenever we can. It’s worlds away from what I grew up with and worlds away from my daily life. Will be stopping in Berea, KY to purchase my very first dulcimer on the way home. It’s been on my bucket list for way too long!

In the spirit of my weekend, wishing everyone at least a glimmer of peace and beauty in yours!

SOTD is Baccarat Rouge 540, with these notes listed: Jasmine, Saffron, Cedarwood, Ambergris. The cedar is quite prominent in this one, and the jasmine surprisingly reticent.

Fiori di Capri for a very early meeting. 20 minute walk afterwards in the cool humidity to a market that sells a house-brand coffee we like. Only to find they were out. Sigh. Will have to call and then trek over there again…. hopefully they’ll be restocked tomorrow.

Going to replenish with Berdoues Scorza di Sicilia, which I haven’t yet tried from the sample box. Cedar is listed…

Have a good weekend everyone! I think we have a window of one good day of weather in NYC tomorrow…

SotD = Comme des Garçons Red Sequoia

Smells like the real deal! Enjoying this sample very much.

Got to try Kyoto this week, thought it would be love, it was just ok. Gonna try it again.

BUT I think I am in love with Avignon which is also new to my nose and didn’t think would work.

Just goes to show, you never know, you know?

    Happy Friday, NST!

Your story reminds me of the times I’ve seen or heard about where someone would come into the cat shelter all ready to adopt a cat or kitten they’d seen online, but while there, another cat would grab their attention and “demand” to be taken home, so they’d change their mind and happily take the new one home! Maybe, just as cats choose their humans, perfumes “choose” us?

oh! that’s sweet to think how people and pets find one another. I love the idea that there is something that connects particular people and animals. When we take time to look and then recognize the link, it really pays off.

and yep, I agree cats and perfumes, they choose us. ;)

      ???? You smell wonderful!
I actually sniffed Samsara in the wild recently. I was waiting in line at Walgreens and the woman next to me smelled fantastic, so I finally complemented her. “You smell lovely, it’s Samsara isn’t it?” Her, “ oh, I don’t know, my husband got it for me, it comes in a red bottle?” Me, “yes, that’s Samsara.”
You don’t know?!???? She went on to tell me it was actually the lotion, which I didn’t know they made. Of course I went home and furiously googled and try to find some but couldn’t. Have you ever seen the lotion?

wow, lotion eh? (said like a Canadian)
        She has a great husband

I have not seen that one..a long time ago I had samsara bath salts and they were heaven for the tub.

I see on the Guerlain website that they have changed their packaging and do not have the red bottles anymore.

I have a clear coffin like bottle with a red and gold cap (that is a spray bottle) and I also have the Parfum, a small red bottle that you can only dab with your finger.

I was very happy that NSTers find Samsara sexy.

Wearing a few spritzes of Chene de Mousse 30 courtesy of the new Le Labo shop in Edinburgh. There’s some cedar there in the background. It’s been enjoyable to wear, but I can’t imagine paying such a fat price for this £212 for 50ml! For that I want something earth-shatteringly beautiful, and some sense that the cost has come from materials not just “exclusivity”.

Oh, and thanks for the suggestions re: rosacea flare ups yesterday. I popped in to Space NK today, was lucky enough to find someone who seemed to have lots of clue–several members of his family have it, and he has a coconut allergy too. He was well-versed in the different types and friendly products, and associated fanatical ingredients reading habits. (Got a Rodial serum to try. Fingers crossed.)

BOM Incense (Ys-Uzac). Love it. This makes me think more of burning leaves than church incense. Not especially smokey. Will switch to Olympic Orchids woodcut later or maybe wonderwood. It’s only 6 am so I’m allowed to be indecisive. I love wood scents but some cedar notes can strike me as artificial and harsh. I like pencil shavings cedar and cut wood cedar more than needles and cones. We have a big Lebanese Cedar section in our botanic gardens reflecting the importance of Lebanese settlers during the early years of this city.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDT

There are shockingly more perfumes with cedar listed in the notes than I ever imagined; however, I hardly ever smell it. No.19 EDT is one example. Opardu? Nada! In any case, despite wearing LASHINGS of No.19 EDT, it went poof in about 3 hours. Maybe it’s a good thing as I may stop by Barneys today. Would you believe I have not smelled Le Labo Mousse de Chine? If I like it, a bottle is coming home with me.

I’m starting a new series called “Word of the day”. It will include a combination of new to me words (and I will mention where I read it) and remarkable words.

    First up:

encomium — a speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something highly.

    Where found:
The Quick Side of Passion by Alexander McCall Smith
    (The Sunday Philosophy Club Series)

How I feel about the word:
It’s an ugly word but means something good.

What other words would you put in this category?

It’s a very cold Saturday morning here, it’s looking like spring with trees showing their first leaves, and a magnolia in the neighbour’s garden, but winter has not finished yet – the last week has been amongst the coldest of the year. That’s a roundabout way of saying that I haven’t participated in the community project, despite have a perfect candidate for Friday.

Thameen’s Moon of Baroda is pretty much all cedar according to Fragrantica, but it didn’t go with my Friday clothes. The more I think about perfume, the more I find that my perfume needs to be right with what I’m wearing. On Friday, it was more important that I dressed to stay warm than to match cedar! I wore Aedes de Venustas Palissandre d’Or, which I have just seen has some cedar, so I participated in a minor way without knowing it. :)

But then the ol’ sample stash came through with flying colors and offered me APOM: a spring/summer scent with cedar as a featured note. Mission accomplished.

I have successfully hoola-hooped for the first time in many years earlier this week! It’s been a fun way to get some exercise in, although I don’t remember it being difficult at all back in the day.

SOTD = SL Bois de Violette, from the sample stash. On me this is mostly Parma violets and violet leaf with a whisper of cedar. Works for me, since cedar can become one of those overwhelming “exploding” notes.

What I have is called a “Wave Hoop”. It’s filled with some water instead of the beads and air that a regular hoola hoop has. That might be part of the increased difficulty I’m having.

Are you taking a class or just doing it at home? Curious because my Y was offering classes…I was told it was great fun.

I’m just doing it at home. I find that if I have to go somewhere to exercise, I am a LOT less likely to do it. But I have been having fun puttering around by myself! :)

Yeah — I prefer yoga in a class, but almost everything else, I am more likely to do it at home.

Go you in the hoola-hoop! If I try it now, I would probably wrench my back.

It took me several attempts to get a rhythm going. At one point, I wasn’t sure it was ever going to happen.

Hoop it up! Sounds like water would binanwhole lot more challenging for sure. Not only because of the inherent weight of the water, but because of the centrifugal force once it gets moving. Good for you!

Cedre Atlas!!! This was the perfume that really made me a perfumista, it holds a special place in my heart and I LOVE it.

The initial citrus burst lasts about 10 minutes on me and then it’s soft cedar all day. My co-worker’s dog approves too!

i totally forgot about that one! You smell great, and how great to have a puppy dog at work. There was a gentleman where I used to work who trained puppies destined to become seeing eye dogs. He brought the pup to work most days, and it was always wonderful to have a little furball around.

Wearing the very last of my Neela Vermiere Bombay Bling! Appropriate for an Artwalk, I think, since it is a work of art. I can’t say I get cedar, particularly, mostly just mango, spices, and tobacco, but it counts. I will ask for more of this for Christmas, I think. Happy weekend, everyone!
