Thursday scent of the day 7/19

Posted by Robin on 19 July 2018 257 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Daiquiri Day. (I am heading home from vacation today, so won't be around to comment or answer emails.) What fragrance are you wearing?

My favorite vodka tonic: Charbay Ruby Red Grapefruit Vodka, ice cubes made from fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, a couple spoonfuls of Jack Rudy tonic syrup, mineral or soda water, twist of orange peel, dash of cardamom bitters. The matching fragrance that I would be wearing if I weren't about to spend the whole day in the car with my long-suffering son: Hermès Eau de Pamplemousse Rose.

Reminder: on 7/20 we're having a Cocktail Party...tell us about your favorite cocktail (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), provide a recipe if you like, and wear a perfume that would complement your choice. It doesn't have to be a boozy fragrance!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Phlur Greylocke….there is an apple note in this fragrance so I guess it could be paired with an apple cocktail…if such exists?

When I hear “appletini” it makes me smile because I immediately think of the TV series Scrubs.

My mom likes to confuse young bartenders by ordering a Jack Rose. (Applejack, lemon and grenadine). It’s pretty tasty!

Do you think your Marzipans will help you finish it?

the middle one is already on top of all the Phlurs in the house….I had been keeping what I have in my room thinking Phlur is MY house but no…..she got her little mitts on it and is layering them :) …..this is why nothing ever gets finished….bottles go back and forth back and sometimes end up in the basement….I am determined though to make Greylocke my summer staple so it will be finished solo or with help-LOL!

and keep in mind that next month two will be gone so that just leaves the youngest and I ….I will have a better picture of what is mine to finish based on what the girls take with them to college…..that will help too.

That is of great help! Do they always finish the perfumes that they take with them?
I should actually borrow the Marzipans from you if I really want my collection to go down quick!???? I love the way you all enjoy
            perfumes!
Hope you and the youngest can finish as much as you can!

My eldest has been the only one away thus far and depending upon the college year sometimes she came home with a few stragglers (mostly decants and samples) but other times she did not…the middle one “steals” things from me but then returns them but expects me NOT to drain them. It DOES help having lots of folks wearing fragrances (my parents and I swap bottles on a regular basis when they come to visit from the city) and my mom eagerly awaits decants that I make for her whenever we get together…she is retired and goes “Latin dancing” every day and easily goes through 4-5 ml as she ‘refreshes” herself all the time….my dad also goes through copious amounts….it’s a wonder that any of us actually have much of a collection but then again perfume is always part of birthdays, holiday presents, Easter, etc etc etc.

You need to find yourself someone who shares your passion and then pass some of the stuff along! My guess is your husband is not that person :) Neither is mine!!!!

Oh my! Even your father and your mother! That is absolutely amazing! My family is not into perfumes at all. My mother is only Tabu. My youngest sister is only Ysatis. She says it reminds her of our grandmother, even though she never worn Ysatis. My younger sister only buys full bottles of mainstream perfumes. She does not get my way to enjoy perfumes, even if samples and decants are more expensive than a full bottle. My father was too conservative and worn mostly after-shave colognes. My husband does not like perfumes. The only one he wears is Hummer H2, no matter how many good perfumes he has received in his whole life. I barely got compliments from him when I wore Oscar by Oscar de la Renta and Pacifica French Lilac. I hope someday I can find some
one close to me who can really share my perfume pasion. My family is a failure! ????

Your family and my family are on the opposite ends of the spectrum (except for my hubby who is more like your family)…but you don’t need a family passionate about perfume…you have all of us right here…we “get” you :) …I guess the only benefit to having a perfume obsessed family is that they “understand” why you spend lots of money on perfume….and I have to say that some of those aftershaves and colognes from the 70s were really quite wonderful so I bet your dad smelled amazing! My hubs wore Drakkar when we met, then nothing after we got married and now wears St Clairs First Cut but only once in a blue moon because he can’t smell it on himself even though one spray on his skin is a powerhouse (I smell it and I love it on him….another bottle that was technically mine- LOL!)….and now you have me curious about Hummer H2……

In the spirit of using it up, I wore Glossier’s You for the past three days. Yesterday my tiny decant was finished. It is a very pleasant work appropriate scent and if I didn’t already own Diptyque Fleur de Peau, I might have considered a bottle.
Today’s SotD will be Bois Blonds. The humidity has finally broken here and today is the kind of weather I enjoy.

I have a travel spray/Sephora freebie of California Clementine if anyone is interested. To my nose it is quite similar to Happy, and I don’t need both. Shoot me an email at pkwisdom in the land of yahooo.

I’ll take your humidity, please. A couple of weeks ago I said it’d probably be the last time I was looking forward to a heatwave. Not so! BRING IT. It’s been cool here, particularly at night, and my apartment is freezing cold. 68 or 69F this a.m. and I can’t bring myself to turn the heat on in the middle of July. Instead, I got back in bed and turned my heat pads on.

I love the warm evenings! More, please!

My apartment seems to be naturally cold for some reason(s) that I haven’t quite figured out. And although I’ve closed all the vents and intakes, our neighbors’ A/C blows into our rooms nevertheless and makes it even colder. On days when it’s warm enough, I’ve been opening all the windows to let some heat in. That’s the only way to warm this place up, as I really cannot bring myself to turn the heat on.

I’m inside right now wearing a long sleeved tee, thick sweater and sweater coat. Winter clothes in summer are not what I’m about. :(

I love pierogi. There ‘s a small Polish restaurant near my work place …well actually it’s a restaurant / deli / video tape rental place :) .
The 4 tables they do have, have paper place mats on them, the lady serving is grumpy. I feel I get the full Eastern European experience when I go there (and hey I can make that comment since I am orginally from Eastern Europe and find it funny / nostalgic at this point).
I’m wearing a sample of Eau de Tarroco from Diptyique which is quite faint on me.

The only cocktail like scent I have is Arquiste’s No.57 – smells exactly like a Manhattan and deliberately. Jessica had a great review of it: https://nstperfume.com/2014/09/05/j-crew-arquiste-no-31-no-57-fragrance-reviews/

Not sure why the collaboration with JCrew ended but I got my bottle on clearance for $20!

Another vote for Manhattans. And for No. 57. I also got my bottle on clearance. It was obviously flawed because the top broke away from the bottle when I picked it up. Thankfully, it didn’t hit the floor, so I was able to decant into smaller bottles… I’ll need to read that review.

Yesterday, I finished my sample of the AdP I was trying. Very short longevity on me. Today I’m going to finish Woman in Gold, which is reminding me of Lutece by Dana. CM8, can you back me up on this? So, funny/ironic story: there is one lady at work that I stopped speaking to, unless it was a work related conversation. She is a big talker and makes me crazy. For the last few weeks she has been trying to engage me, to no avail. Yesterday, she comes to me and says ” hey, I know you like perfume, can you recommend a good one for me?” Well, I was halfway through asking her tons of questions before I realized she had gotten me! Omg and LOL! She turned my perfume love against me! I’m so gullible…. It’s ok though, tomorrow I will wear something BIG, and go back to work only talk. ????????✌????

    Good morning Y’all!

Pairing Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay with Wood Sage and Sea Salt. GOOD STUFF!

I have a blackberry briar patch that I am constantly fighting to keep mowed down (it never really produced anything more than a handful of berries, but plenty of thorns!), and everytime I mow it down it smells EXACTLY like Blackberry and Bay. Jo Malone really nailed that scent! :) It smells FABULOUS when I mow the new green upstarts!

The company I work for is based in Ohio. The hospital doesn’t have any say in pay, because I’m not employed by the hospital. This contract has been a nightmare since the beginning, and I’m really tired of hearing “I’m sorry.” Ugh, if you only knew! Anyway, the whole thing is resolved because my next contract is with another company. I like to be proactive, especially when others don’t value my time, effort, and skills.

Perfect green citrus floating above lily of the valley and ylang over light woods. I should wear this more often.

I started the day dumping on me a sample of Shalini Parfume. I don’t know where I got this from. First time trying it and what I got was a big blast of cat pee in the opening. An hour later it was a wf bomb, very animalic, lots of civet. Fortunately two hours later it was gone. Terrible.
I just sprayed a whole sample of By Killian Good Girl Gone Bad. I am enjoying it. Nice, but not memorable. Two more samples gone and also money saved!

I had a sample of Shalini which I didn’t love, mostly just a soapy white floral, but it also went bad pretty quickly and I ended up tossing it. Sounds like maybe your sample spoiled?

I cannot tell since it was the first time trying it and I was not aware that I even had it. I would not be surprised if it was already spoiled, at least the opening was very bad. Then it became a strong white flower scent that I did not like at all. Kind of shock about how pricey it is, but
I am sure it has its fans.

I loooove cocktails, as long as they are not too sweet.
Bloody Marys and Gin Tonics are the ones I order the most when in a bar or restaurant.
I often have a bottle of vodka in my fridge. I add it to blood orange juice
or to a water melon/ice cube mix I put in a blender.

Used the sadly unavailable L’Occitane Bienvenue Chez soap which put me a citrus mood, so I topped it off with lashings of LL Bergamote 22. Kicking myself for not getting the L’Occitane in the room spray when they had it as I totally would’ve worn it as a personal scent. It’s almost my perfect bright citrus with a sprinkling of aromatic herbs.

Might have to switch over to to the Samples edition of Use It Up! since unlike CM8 and possibly others, I don’t sniff wonderful variations of the same perfume day after day. Instead, I feel deprived and cranky at not being able to chose, like having to wear the same shirt. Have put out a couple of almost-finished samples on the mantlepiece to tackle, if I want, later this week.

I cannot commit to the same perfume everyday, because I get bored fast. That is why I am working on samples and decants first to start getting rid of as many perfumes as possible. When the time comes for me to work on full bottles, I will have to choose a couple of them and do a rotation every day so I can finish them without being too boring. Do whatever makes you feel more comfortable in Using Up your perfumes.

My favorite cocktail is a mojito – I’m too lazy to make them at home, so only order them when I’m out (which is not very often) and when it’s warm weather. Today would be a nice day for one! Pairing that with AA Herba Fresca. It’s a mojito in a perfume bottle!

I didn’t realize tonic syrup was a thing. How is it better than tonic water? My husband loves tonic in his summer drinks so maybe I should get some! Happy Thursday everyone!

I bought Fiele Viola yesterday. I’ve tried it every time I’ve gone into town and it was the last bottle in the shop. To me it smells like a green fig (that’s not the notes)…like Philosykos with the addition of, say, daffodil stems. I like Boswellia too. Is it spring yet?

I just recently learned of this line. I’m interested in their use of natural materials and eventually I would like to try them all. I’m specifically interested in Santalum, have you tried it? How is the longevity?

Longevity of all of them are quite good because they are not 100 percent natural …they have musk in the base…I bought a sample pack about three or four years ago and tried five of them…I noticed that the prices of full bottles have gone up substantially…back then they were somewhere in the 75 dollar range…now I think they are well over 100 dollars.

They didn’t have santalum here but I did try Boswellia (frankincense) and Cedrus and liked Boswellia . Viola is very similar in projection and lasting power to Ostara – if you have that. Quite similar in some ways. I haven’t noticed the musk in the base; I would say it becomes more green/woody in the drydown.

I have tried a bit of Coromandel, and I personally do not see the resemblance. Tempo does not have any gourmand notes at all to my nose, but does have floral and powdery ones. Coromandel has some dark, bittersweet cocoa in it, along with spices and smoke. I also think that Coromandel is a “heavier” bodied scent than Tempo.

SOTM was Iris Rebelle, for the gym.
SOTA was Barbara Bui, because we all know how long IR lasts!
SOTE is Pomelo Paradis, because we all know how long BB lasts!

I’ve exhausted most of my supply of Orange Sanguine, but keeping a 4ml sample spray, since it layers so well with Assam of India. So, the USE IT UP project is in phase 2, now focusing on some Olfactif subscription samples and the Arquiste sample set, which has evaporated to a dismaying degree.

I checked my notes, and by the end of June, I had drained 32 samples. Not bad, but I’m pretty certain the 2H18 number will be bigger. I like the sound of little bitty clunks. ????

SOTD = Mad etc Len Petits Papiers

From a decant from the fabulous cazaubon! No more hoarding because a FB is winging its way to me. 10 sprays and I am in a heavenly cloud of spicy heliotrope and benzoin. I kept catching wafts if something good and it is I. Me and myself! Curiously, other than Fragrantica, I have not seen any reviews. One of the commenters used “sticky sweet” 4x in 2 short paragraphs. To each his own of course but to me, it is spicy rather than sweet.

I think I may have mentioned that one of the projects I had been working on will be delayed by a week. The not so funny thing is some teams (not my workstream) actually have a critical path milestone to meet tomorrow but a final decision has not yet been made! I predicted a 3 month delay so tomorrow will be the moment of truth.

This Saturday, I am attending a prayer session for the soul of a friend’s housekeeper’s grandson. 4 years old and dead of a bacterial infection- his life barely begun. Very sad.

I think you read the sticky sweet review for VII Petit Papiers Nobile….or something like that. I checked out all of their scents and there are two different PPs. The first was released in 2011 and I think the version you like is from 2018. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
