Thursday scent of the day 4/5

Posted by Robin on 5 April 2018 286 Comments

Almost-Friday, plus Caramel Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Prada Candy. Has anyone tried the new Prada Candy Sugar Pop? Do comment and tell me if I need to try it.

Reminder: on 4/6, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Prada Robot Leather Coin Purse Key Chain ("Crafted of blue, grey, and multicolored saffiano leather, Prada's robot coin purse key chain is completed with jack-plug "legs," a zipper "mouth," and grey and silver leather and stud "eyes." Made in Italy, this bionic figure is one of many playful motifs frequently used by the storied house") is $310 at Barneys.

Sotd is Diptyque Fleur de Peau from a sample. I like it. It is definitely not a statement perfume, but I don’t think it is meant to be. Has anyone tried this one and No 18 and can tell me how they compare? I am always on a quest to find the perfect, fly under the radar skin scent since technically my workplace is scent free. I need a good list of no-scent scents, lol. What are everyone’s favs?

I sprayed FdP on in the store a week or so ago, and by the time it hit my skin, it was already gone. Anosmic? Maybe. But my girlfriend couldn’t smell anything either. I’ve never had that happen before.

When I first dabbed from the sample I couldn’t smell it either so I dumped a little more and now I am getting occasional lovely wafts. I think a lot of people can be anosmic to certain kinds of musk. That’s only happened to me once with NR For Her oil. I literally could not smell a thing.

Maybe I’ll give it another try by itself rather than as one of many I’m testing at the same time. Doesn’t sound like it would hold it’s own around other scents with more presence.

I’ve tried both and don’t they they smell alike to me. 18 reminds me more of PdE Cri de la Lumiere.
I like to have a stash of non-perfumes, which mostly would be mistaken for just showered and/or laundered.
      Some I’ve worn:
Cacharel Noa-clean with a little creamy warmth. Cheap!
Aroma M Geisha Blanche-soapy clean with a little fruit. Smells like some good white soap or other.
      Derek Lam Silent Street-white musk+cucumber

I’m lemming LL Ambrette 9 but it’s so fleeting that I don’t think I’d shell out for it.

Although the notes are similar, I really disliked Le Cri, while I love No. 18. Not sure why, but there it is. Le Cri was shrill and didn’t meld with my skin in a pleasant way. I know I’m the outlier here.

I didn’t love Le Cri either (though didn’t hate it either). It goes too metallic on me. My husband said it smelled like our dishwashing liquid (Dawn Platinum) and I could sort of see what he meant in a side-by-side ???? But I also didn’t love 18. Same with the metallic element and a bit pickle-y on me.

I also really liked Ambrette 9, but agree that’s it way too much money for a perfume that was originally meant for babies, lol. Maybe that’s why it was so fleeting. I’ll add those others to my list!

Some of my favorite quiet work-friendly scents are Chanel No. 19 poudre, Cacharel Noa, and Balmain Ivoire.

Thirding the Noa…also, ten years ago I shared an office space with someone who had very little tolerance for perfume…during that time period I had the entire Philosophy Grace collection and also Clean Warm Cotton (she tolerated all of those). Perfect Veil is also another good one as well as something simple like Alyssa Ashley Musk which sells for a song online.

and this…a new discovery for me…

      https://nstperfume.com/2006/06/15/santa-maria-novella-melograno-pomegranate-fragrance-review/

I have an older bottle than what is currently being offered at Luckyscent…it smells gorgeous and soft and subdued…reminds me very much of vintage Emeraude…once I finish up some of my other bottles that have a tad of juice in them I will start on this one…I think it is a perfect under the radar wear anytime anywhere kind of fragrance.

      Lumiere Blanche
      Musc Nomade
      Philosophy Cream
      Gabrielle

Not all of this are skin scents but some are close to the skin scents while others are pleasant and don’t announce themselves as perfume

      Eau de narcisse blue.
I love it and wear it a lot in spring and summer.

I think most Eaus (including Eau des merveilles), and also the Jardins, from Hermès are quite ‘under the radar’.
Imo the ideal brand for business meetings where you have to spend too much time with too many people in small spaces hahaha ;)

I also think Satori is great for this purpose, but its soo expensive :(

Good morning, NST! I’m looking forward to the top 10 post tomorrow. It’s been fun reading everyone’s springy scents. I’m in search of more spring options for my fragrance wardrobe, but I’m having a hard time finding any that last on me.

Today I’m wearing Ta’if, which I love. Not sure how springy it is, but it has a lovely presence, and I want a full bottle.

Rose de Siwa. This has been a most loved spring fragrance from the first day I sampled it.
Tragic story ????…I had a decant of RdS in one of those metal decants with a metal casing surrounding an inner glass liner. I was rushing down the stairs this morning with a bunch of stuff in my hands. The glass liner slipped out of the metal casing and smashed on the stairs. I lost several mls of perfume and had to clean up the broken glass. I’m so glad that I finally cracked and bought a FB as this little decant was the last of my stash. It feels like yhis purchase was meant to be.

I tried Magnolia Nobile. It was kind of pretty – white flowers, citrus, a hint of sweet fruitiness, but, as it often happens with magnolia scents, there was something unpleasantly synthetic in it, so eventually I decided that this one was not for me.
I am hard to please when it comes to magnolia in perfumes, though.

I have the EDP version of that, I gather it’s quite different. Less orange blossom, more spice. It seems almost voluptuous to me, more like a night out perfume than an office scent. I wish I’d smelled the EDT but I guess they don’t make it anymore.

Yes, EDT and EDP are quite different. EDP is all about iris and (as far I remember) patchouli. I agree that it’s more suitable for night, and I think it’s a fall scent. EDT is sunny and bright, although it’s not weak. A sparkling white floral. I like both versions.
EDT is not on AdP’s website, so you must be right – they discontinued it. What a shame!

I was digging through my clothing that’s still in my ex’s attic – luckily we weren’t Aholes to eachother during the divorce so still good friends. In any case I found a mini bottle of Sideris that I just threw in there last Fall before going to India. Just a few drops left in the bottle but enough to tide me over while I’m in house sitting limbo.

Also, I will be in NYC this coming weekend (Sunday and Monday April 8 and 9. I’m probably not going to make it into Brooklyn to Twisted Lily. Any leads for sniffing in Manhattan? There are quite a few things that I would like to sample.

The financial district surprisingly has a lot of options if you want to try out a bunch of stuff in one day. Brookfield place has Saks, plus Hermes and Jo Malone stores. And a couple blocks away is the Oculus which has Penhaligon’s and Aesop stores. Makes for fun work lunchtimes :-)

I’ve really been wanting to check out this place called Perfumarie in Lafayette downtown:
      https://perfumarie.com/
It’s a blind sniffing experience of established perfumes and maybe some new stuff also. A little bit of a different experience.
Then there are the usual suspects:
The Aedes/CO Bigelow/F Malle trifecta in the west village is a favorite of mine.

Our grass went green before we got all that snow two weeks ago. The tulips seem to have survived, as well as the late-blooming daffodils. Hope the snow leaves you unscathed!

I’m in Apres L’Ondee today. It’s usually not my favorite, though I know some people adore it. I’m just more of a Shalimar gal. BUT today, Apres L’Ondee is really hitting the spot for spring.

Speaking of Shalimar, the one good thing about my fiancé being gone is that I can spray anything I want with abandon. I sprayed myself lavishly (in true hajusurri fashion) in Shalimar edp last night and enjoyed it so much haha! My fiancé likes the Shalimar dry down but does not care for the initial spray at all.

You smell lovely! Isn’t it wonderful to be able to spray lavishly? I love walking around my house in my own fragrant cloud. Luckily for me, my husband actually likes me to overspray because he would prefer to smell my perfume when I walk into the room than to have my wrist at his nose. Plus, he doesn’t have a strong sniffer, so I can go to town on the regular. ????

Coffee and bagel in hand this morning. SOTD is just a smidge of Bee’s Bliss. I smell springy, oh so springy!

I’m trying to plan a wine tour for this upcoming week. While researching this, I was trying to figure out what I would do with the dog and how to remain sober to drive after…one glass and I have a buzz because I’m a lightweight when it comes to alcohol. I love traveling with my buddy, but it does limit you in certain situations. So, imagine my surprise when I discovered many wineries here are dog friendly and the tour group will pick you (and your doggo) up and drop you off at your chosen hotel!

Also, I’ve missed the sun more than I realized. The sun here is warm (not homicidal like it is in Florida!) and the humidity is very comfortable. I have just been feeling so much BETTER since leaving Oregon. The climate was affecting me much more than I realized I guess. T-Rex is happier because we can comfortably be outdoors without getting drenched. She’s not a fan of rain. Plus there’s a ton of dog friendly shops and restaurants with porches where we can hang and she can steal the hearts of random strangers who always have to stop and pet her. Yesterday, we were at a café and she became fast friends with a toddler who was just fascinated by her. The more the kid screamed and jumped, the more fun the dog had. They were having a total blast and entertaining all the adults watching.

Hope everyone is feeling a bit of a lift as spring gets under way!

Yes, a whole lotta ignorance on my part about wine, but having a modicum of knowledge about it might be a good thing. I can imagine some of these wineries are heavily dependent on technology these days. I’m more interested in the process rather than the tasting, so not sure if the tour will touch on that or not.

      1) Yes, many wineries not only offer tours but help with shuttles as well!

      2) I get what you are saying about Oregon, especially Western Oregon and Portland Metro- the grey here lasts for 8 months of the year, and it is not a surprise that so many of my friends suffer from fatigue and low grade depression. When I was in LA I was surprised by my energy level- I was up to literally walk all day and eat a lighter daily diet, and go dancing all night. And I consider myself an energetic person ALREADY.

You are gonna find SO MANY wild herbs in California. Back when it was a Spanish duchy, so many areas around the old missions had European styled herb gardens. So even today, you find herbs growing wild, and adapted to the chaparral climate.

Yes, I get that! But, the Florida sun is an evil twin to the one here in California. This sun is gentle, kind, and touches everything with tenderness. The Florida sun beats you down from great distance like a flame thrower, sizzling you on a burning hot, cherry red anvil until you are a charred ghost of your former self. Ugh.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

I’m on my 2nd bottle and have observed a noticeable dent in the volume!

    Things that irk me:

I work in a building where one has to swipe a badge to go through lobby turnstiles leading to a small elevator bank. There is no need to swipe the badge to go out to the lobby. The other day, i arrived at the turnstile to gi out at the exact same tine as someone trying to get in to the elevator bank. Who has the right of way? I think I do because I am getting out from a smaller space (elevator bank) to a larger space (lobby). The other person decided to swipe in anyway before I got out. Next time, I will own the turnstile and keep moving out and woe is the person in my path!

Absolute rule. Person exiting has right of way.

That being said, I was once horrified by my boss, a huge 6’5” man, who barged through the exit of a building such that a much smaller woman had to jump aside. I would argue his sheer size and bulk warranted him stepping aside.

Absolutely. I’ve gotten a number of bottles from them. I have only once had a problem (the sprayer was messed up), and they replaced it with no hassle when I called (they offered to replace or reimburse once I’d shipped it back, with a packing slip they paid for.)

The one tricky thing is that their coupons are variable! The website tends to show a 20 or 30 % off coupon, but if you get to the website circuitously, you can get a 37 % off coupon sometimes. Lillyjo figured out that if you get to the website through a fragrantica link, you get the higher percentage. I’ve found that Google searching it does that, too. Someone else suggested you leave your items in your cart for days, whereupon they’ll send you a higher value coupon :)

I was very glad to read that you got Rose de Siwa, I’m sure it will not disappoint, even in the long run. It’s one of the MDCI’s I wouldn’t mind a bottle of myself. I own Promesse and Enlèvement and am very fond of several others, Rose, Cœur and Invasion in particular.

You smell just lovely. Do you have the EDP of Gypsy Water? I received a rollerball of the perfume oil in the last freebiemeet (thanks again to the sender – I’ve enjoyed it greatly!) and while it’s very quiet, it does stick around for a few hours.

It is the EDP (from a sample). I was wondering about the oil – it’s great to hear that it lasts longer. I think that if I ever want more when my sample runs out, the oil will be the way to go.

Today’s SOTD is my latest cheapie impulse buy: BBW In the Sun. It’s a beachy orange blossom on a skin musk/sandalwood base. There’s also something in it that smells vaguely sunscreeny to me. Perfect way to cheer up on a chilly, gloomy day.

Is it the weekend yet? I had a rather intense job interview yesterday for an internal position at the academic library where I work. I think it went well, but it really wore me out! Sotd was Ormonde Woman.

My mini bottle of Panthere (parfum concentration) arrived (not La Panthere, but Panthere). So I am wearing that right now.

I admit, I bought this mostly because the little bottle looked so cute with those black panthers on it and the price was right. I never smelled or sampled it before.
But the juice is not bad! Its a ‘go big or go home 80s floriental, I like it a lot!

When I heard Panthere was going to be discontinued to make way for La Panthere, I bought up a bunch of the parfum. I have about 75ml, I think. It’s one of my most loved scents. You smell great! Plus the bottles are adorable.

        Smart move!

Its good stuff. I have no regrets blind buying it.
And I really dont get why they replaced Panthere with La Panthere.

Just look at that Cartier Panthere bling bling! Decadent stuff.
I can only imagine a big ‘vintage style’ perfume to wear with it, not the polite and lovely (but slightly boring, at least to my nose) La Panthere….

Following Robin a bit, wearing Prada Candy Kiss. I tried Candy Gloss and it was very cherry cough drop to me. I have not tried the Sugar Pop yet. I called in sick to work today, because I’m sick. With my last job, I would have went in out of loyalty, but that meant very little in the end. I decided I won’t be killing myself for work anymore. But I’m still feeling guilty. I was hoping to see Perfumelover67 today. I know people come and go, but I still worry. Hope everyone is as well as can be.

It’s amazing how much work you can get when you don’t have electricity and potential electricity- enabled distractions ( internet , cooked food, vacuum cleaners, washing machines). I think my top something spring scent would probably be Gabrielle. It’s light and pretty so I’ll wear it today. I was in the graveyard yesterday and spotted an interesting name Hortense Schlonberg. If I’d had internet I would have searched for information. Happy spring to everyone. Fabulous moon this morning and a big shining star…probably a planet…right next to it.

Morning, all. It’s definitely cooler now, thank goodness, and I’m starting to layer up my clothes. This is always fun: I get bored with little dresses, because no matter how pretty they are, they remain just one garment. Layers lend themselves to “shopping” in my wardrobe for different looks.

SOTD is Oeillet Bengale, all spicey, warm, assertive carnation goodness. I love it, and it softens into a nice work scent. This is one I intended to buy a FB of at Fumerie when I went back to the PNW this year…..no, that path still leads to full grumpiness. I will buy other beauties in Europe, and I WILL go to PNW in 2019.

Work is full of people. That sounds stupid, but everyone seems to think that it’s the Deputy’s role to hear their grumbles and diagnoses of what’s wrong in the school. I’ve formed the policy of letting them have their moan, but I don’t take any of their emotions on board. In the process, I glean some small items of useful information, and they go away unburdened. Well, I suppose they do. One positive thing that is frequently said is that my office smells nice. Well, that’s good! Maybe nice perfume soothes their heaving academic bosoms a little too. I wish it could be that easy.

Speaking of people, I have an early meeting with a grumpy groupabout staffing. I had better go and organise myself. Be well, all.

SOTD for me is MFK Oud Satin Mood. The juice is gray and so is our weather, but both in a nice, soft, enveloping sort of way. We have spring and the air is kind of sweet and the humidity feels like a caress. The juice smells great, powdery with vanilla, and some flowers, and I also notice benzoin. It’s probably too soft and sweet for many people but it’s just like a very lightweight gentle little silk blouse that sometimes feels wonderful to wear.

There was one of those moments at work today. I was wearing Portrait of a Lady, and a colleague declared that I smelled very nice. (It’s true. I smelled bloody lovely. Who doesn’t, in PoaL?) Which was sweet… until she continued with “it’s very different from your normal perfumes, it’s very pretty. Not mannish. And this one is called “lady”. It’s for women!”

Clearly I don’t have any sort of poker face, as she then flustered about trying to explain that women wear light and pretty florals, fresh! clean! fresh! pretty! Poor thing, I let her flap for way too long before I conceded that gosh, don’t people have different tastes! And wow, aren’t gender norms restrictive?! (She ran away that that point.)

I have a terrible urge to either douse myself in Fracas for tomorrow, or find the manliest-manly-man scent I own.

(p.s. Not a man. Just in case of any confusion.)

I’ve come down with some sort of creeping crud, it started in my head and has now worked its way down to an annoying, hacking cough. Ooh, that sounds nice! To be fair, our trees are blossoming now because it’s been near/at 90° here for a couple weeks already.

They are definitely both of those! It makes the lack of scent from the native palo verde and mesquite trees very disappointing. ????

Had a doctor appointment this morning so went commando til I got home. And now I’m wearing the yummy and not-at-all springy Coromandel. The appointment went well, so I think she’s going to get me cleared for surgery next week.

Thank you to everyone who posted “Heal quickly” wishes last night! The Advil was definitely enough for the discomfort yesterday, and I have only needed a couple of them today. Hopefully, I will be able to eat things other than soft food in the near future. Part of my mouth feels like I tried to eat a slice of pizza too soon, which is a LOT better than it was yesterday. The periodontist wants to see me in 3 weeks, just to check up on things.

SOTD = back in Burberry Brit Rhythm for Women, from my little sample. This definitely ticks the boxes for both “no-brainer” and soothing. Oh, and Spring-y as well.

Didn’t see your post yesterday, but did you have gum surgery? No fun, but survivable. I’ve done it twice with good results, although I certainly wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t need to! Best of luck!

Yes, I did. I had an excellent periodontist doing the procedure. It wasn’t as bad as a root canal, but I agree with you on not having to do it again if I don’t have to!

Oh, Robin, about the Prada Candy Sugar Pop… based on the magazine strip that I smelled recently, I’d say don’t go out of your way to sniff it. The original scent was much better.

I love the original Candy, but have a hard time making myself sniff the others based on name alone. “Candy Sugar Pop” just doesn’t sound like something I need in my life haha.

As mentioned prior, in Prada Oeillet today. Since I was in znordatrom, I sprayed more on.

Then, I did a quick pop into Lush on my way back to the car. Saw they had the Rose Jam body spray, so I did a blast to my neck/chest. For a body spray, it certainly is powerful. An hour later, and It seems just as strong. I resisted the impulse buy.

SOTD: Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere. Bracing and comforting at the same time. Perfect for a Friday at the end of a tough week of work.

Long day at work! It’s officially the weekend for me so when I got home I sprayed numerous times with Vol de Nuit.

It must be good because my hubby says “did you spray something?”
    I’m still training him..lol
