Friday scent of the day 3/16

Posted by Robin on 16 March 2018 310 Comments

Happy World Sleep Day, and happy Amber Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with an amber note.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Hermès L'Ambre des Merveilles. It's about as heavy on the amber as I generally go. Most of you will out-amber me today, I'm sure.

Reminder: on 3/23, to celebrate the equinox, wear a fragrance that evokes one of Pantone's colors from the Spring 2018 report for New York.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Hermès L'Effet Domino tarot cards are $140.

I was gonna wear SL Ambre Sultan but a quick pre-spritz confirmed my worry that it wasn’t exactly work-friendly, so I went with CSP Vanille Ambre instead: its soft, sweet, plush, warm, cozy, friendly demeanour is unlikely to offend anyone.

Uh oh, I’m not office friendly today! I’ve got Ambre Sultan dabbed on my arm. Not that I care….my poor office mates haha! Although in my defense, I have an office to myself and do not actually share one with anyone!

Omg, World Sleep Day? Sign me up! Actually, I’m off of work today and the kids don’t have school so I did get about an extra hour and a half of sleep, which felt glorious.
SotD is Ambre Precieux. It’s the last of my little decant- which was evaporating right before my very eyes- and though I’m sad to see it go, I still have lots of samples I need to wade my way through. I’m guessing I might have some twins out there today?
    Happy Friday!

Had I any, I’d wear Lauder’s “Intuition” for men. it’s really nice, despite the terrible review in the Turin/Sanchez book. As such, well gosh…I get plenty enough amber from L’Air de Rien for it to qualify, so there! A little sock musty, but I think this is the occasion.

TGIF! I was going to wear Chergui, but couldn’t resist trying the Diptyque Tempo travel spray I just received in the mail. To me, it is a dry patchouli that is well behaved and a little cocoa powdery. I usually don’t go for patchouli-centric scents but really like this.

PSA: if you google ‘free samples diptyque’ you should be able find a Diptyque facebook post that promises to send you samples of Tempo and Fleur de Peau if you provide your mailing address; note there’s a change they have run out of stock.

MFK Grand Soir, quite a lot of amber and just gorgeous so I want to wear it all the time anyway! Went to Neiman-Marcus this week and tried several of the other MFK scents including Lumber Noire and APOM. Oh my, the former totally killed my nose with rose. Ick! The latter seemed rather non distinguished until about 5 or 6 hours later when I kept sniffing my wrist wondering what I had put on there. It’s got some possibilities, that one!

I really wish I’d never sniffed any MFK…. 🙁 I felt Lumber Noire was a bit perfume-y at the beginning and ended up being a more polished or polite PoaL. I have not yet tried APOM but it’s going on my list. Grand Soir only got sprayed on a card and it didn’t grab me when I was at the counter though I’m going to get some and put it through its paces. The one that hooked me in and won’t let go? OMG Oud Satin Oud.

Yes yes, I tried out all the Oud fragrances from him and that one was YUM at first sniff! I purchased a pretty large decant of it. DO try Grand Soir, it’s to die for.

Wearing my one and only amber today, from a tiny 1mL sample. Ambra Nera from Farmascia S.S. Annunziata. I’ll eventually use this, since there are probably only about 2-3 more applications in the sample, but I do not feel the need to own any amber. I just don’t like it very much.

Ormonde Jayne Tolu……sample from generous NST’er!

I did it! I’m participating in Amber week 🙂

Tolu is lovely, very warm & sophisticated, I love it. If spring weren’t on the horizon, I would strongly consider getting a decant.

I see on fragrantica many say that Rochas Absolu is very similar – anyone have any thoughts about that?

I can’t answer your question, but wanted to comment on Tolu. I used to love it, but had a sad accident with one of the small travel tube sprays that I had in my purse. The lid somehow came unscrewed and it leaked out all over everything; it reeked so strongly that I no longer want to wear it. I hope after some more time has elapsed I can still enjoy it. (I have two more of those black travel size sprays.)

that is a shame, I totally understand. I think I would be repulsed by any perfume that was diffused to that extent.

what did you do with your purse and the contents?

I cleaned and wiped everything off as well as I could and aired out the purse’s interior for quite a while until it dried and the odor calmed down.
Since I’m pretty used to finding all of a sudden that something I am wearing smells of cat pee (my athletic shoes, a week ago!), this remaining part of Tolu didn’t bother me so much. I have had to throw some things away that the cat ruined, alas. He’s an old cat and very very sweet but he loves to go in my closet and investigate new places to spray…. Lucky for him he’s such a love-bug.

Also can’t say about the Rochas but your Tolu post just inspired me to put that on my other arm – I have Musc Ravageur and Tolu competing for my attention now. To me Tolu has a lot more floral in the opening stages at least, and MR is more cinnamon and overall gourmand. Not sure that helps or not!

Calypso, sorry about your Tolu mishap – a leak in a purse can make for a very bad day! I bet that purse is permanently Tolu-ized.

I only really crave ambers in the 20 days of Fall we ever get. They just seem to be perfect with brisk, cool air and crunchy brown leaves. Went with a small dab of SSS Winter Woods to play along today. I really like its early phase, but then tends to go a bit beyond my sweetness tolerance.

I was totally going to participate today but my March purchase of The Pour Un Ete came last night and must be worn.

I am on such a Giacobetti kick; I find her fragrances do more to my emotions than any others (even if the emotion they create is mostly “gentle longing”.) I’ve been to Paris so there are lots of places higher on my list for travel… but I might have to bump it up on my list JUST to go to Iunx. Has anyone been? How would you describe the fragrances? (Are they, like I’m imagining, even wilder than her commercially available offerings?)

SsotD = L’ambre des Merveilles + Ambre Narguile

    Amber x 2 because it’s Friday!

I agree with Robin, L’ambre is about as big as I can go for now. To enjoy it best I spritz it up in the air then walk through the perfumed cloud.

The spicy deliciousness of AN is easy to love, I dab it on my wrists and then sniff-sniff-sniff throughout the day.

It took many years for my nose to come around and enjoy amber. NST helped me along the way. Looking forward to reading everyone’s choices today and learning more.

    Happy Friday, guys!

    1) It’s also Transit Driver Appreciation Day! Somehow, these amazing people get up at 2-3 AM in the morning and carpool so that they can get metro areas moving.

    2) SOTD: Showered with Ambre Nera and layered on with the recently discontinued Rive d’Ambre, which is mostly a citrus but has a real amber base. I get an aura of citrus, soapy incense and amber. Very nice.

    3) Of course, leaving it to the last minute and planning out my LA trip: I think the following is good for a week :
4-5 neighborhoods to walk through- Silver Lake/ Highland, Santa Monica/Venice, Burbank (where my friends live) and Pasadena

Shopping: The ScentBar, Detox Market, DTLA (for various goods) Mohwak General Store, Undefeated, Wasteland, Maxfield, Skylight Books and Shareen Vintage.

    LacMa
    Getty (both)
    Griffith Observatory

I am staying in West Hollywood, so of course I will have a chance to eat out BUT probably gonna keep it clutch until dinner with friends.

Any suggestions? (Beverly Hills is anathema.)

I obviously love Ambre Sultan but this is the first time I’ve worn the Ambra Nobile and I really love it. It’s not too sweet- it’s a little sharp and woody which I love. One of his creations **literally** gave me a narcotic experience, unlike any fragrance ever. The iris one I think. I have only a tiny bit and I’m almost nervous to try it again. Others from him, I was really disappointed that I was so disappointed by (if that makes any sense?). I’ve not tried this one but you’re making me want to.

Yes!! Irisoir. I was going to do it on the very last day of February to wrap up Iris Month with Undina but… something happened and I don’t think I wore anything that day. Different than any iris (and perhaps any scent, period).

I did the amber yesterday with Terry de Gunzberg’s Ombre Mercure, which I love. I didn’t feel like wearing my Ambre Precieux either so today I am wearing SL’s Un Lys.

I must have known it was World Sleep Day, since I got about 9 hours last night. I always want to congratulate myself when I get a good night’s sleep, so yay, me!

My plan is to dab on just a tiny bit of Ambre Fetiche parfum, and head to the gym.

I’m in Gucci Guilty Black today. Basenotes says there’s amber in the base, but I don’t have enough experience to know if that’s true. All I know is that by the end of the day I think I smell like a Ghiradelli raspberry chocolate :-).

I went to the new Whole Foods store near us — first time I’d been to a Whole Foods store — last night, and sniffed Pacifica Sugared Amber Dreams. I didn’t care for it myself, but I’m sure others like it. I have a couple of bottles of perfume left from holiday presents from aunts years ago. I tried a spray of Shalimar eau de toilette that must be from the 1980s or early 1990s. It had been sitting on a dresser in my room for a long time. It smelled bitter to me. I worked for a while washing that one off, then settled on the solid perfume version of Sun from LUSH, which just smells like citrus to me.

If anyone (in the continental U.S.) wants bitter-smelling Shalimar…

Thank you for the suggestion, lillyjo. 🙂 I tried that. That seemed to improve things. It still smells smoky to me, but I think it’s supposed to. I could pick out an incense smell. I looked it up, and it has patchouli in it. The scent is quite musky, also, but, again, I believe it’s supposed to be.

As for next Friday, the first thing I started collecting this time around in my interest in fragrances were floral scents, so I’ll try for one that is something of an early spring flower fragrance. Around this time of year, I generally start getting primroses, but I don’t have any perfume that smells like a primrose. I have some violet splash cologne. It’s also getting close to the time that I find garden places selling stock (the flower – Matthiola incana). I like flowers with clove-like scents, especially stock and pinks (Dianthus). I know there are many perfumes that include the fragrance of sweet peas. That’s another early flower. Lots of fun choices. 🙂

Reading about perfumes is refreshing my memory of the meanings of French words. I can match up some of the terms for fragrance notes with flowers, fruits, herbs and spices, and types of incense I’m familiar with, though I’m hazy on many of the scents from plant resins. “Oriental” makes me think of Oriental lilies, but I have some sense of what sort of fragrance is meant by the perfume term. It’s a learning process. 🙂

He then picked up the cards and threw them in the trash. We never revealed the source of the cards or she would have been in real trouble.

I think I am wearing something called Manjari, or maybe its Monjourl. The calligraphy is hard to read.
Either way, its a very nice amber violet body oil, picked up at a tea and herbalists store. A very nice and unusual scent. Just about no village (which is good for work and travel) but clings to my wrist for a wonderful jolt of beauty to cheer me up through out the day.
It makes a lovely hair oil too.

For sleep day Slumberhouse Norne from Gaynor. I like the sense of being deep in a forest with this one.
And from Lady WD I’m wearing Black Cashmere, also calming with a hint of amber.

I’m doing my Saturday morning housework in a drop of Ambre Narguile. I don’t know why I waited so long to try this, it’s as stunning as everyone says. To my nose it also has similarities to Tobacco Vanille, which I already have, and commonsense says I don’t need both. Were I to find myself in close proximity to a bottle of Ambre Narguile, however, there might well be an override of commonsense 🙂

I’m wearing HdP 1740, which is an immortelle leather that dries down to the best amber in my collection. I love it in any season.

Temperatures are dropping again to freezing point, maybe I’ll wear Cafe Ambre Noir tomorrow….

It’s an amber two-fer here today: SSS Ambre Noir and MFK Grand Soir. Last night I decided on the Ambre Noir over Grand Soir, but this morning right there in my inbox was an email from MFK for GS. I figured the Universe was telling me to wear it—and I was not about to risk incurring the Universe’s wrath by not listening!

PSA: Jean Patou lovers might want to check their local Dillard’s in person because mine has Joy (75ml) and Sublime out on the counter at 50% off! The SA said the deal is good “until it’s gone”, and neither of those scents is available on the website now, so I’m guessing they’re selling off their stock.

    Have yourselves a fantastic Friday!

Posting a little late today. Yay Friday! SOTD = L’Air du Desert Marocain, from the sample stash. Very definitely related to yesterday’s Au Coeur du Desert. I can definitely see some of the differences after having worn both scents consecutively.

Which do you prefer? I have LdDM but haven’t tried Au Coeur.

I like them both for different reasons. I don’t think I can say that I prefer one over the other, though. The L’adDM is drier and smokier than the slightly sweeter and more resin-y Au Coeur. I think I’ll need to do more comparing between my two samples… pretty sure that there are other things that I did not notice in this round of sniffing.

Wow, the day got away from me. I wore i Profumi di Firenze Ambra del Nepal, one of my favorite ambers. It’s so smooth and creamy – no loud or screechy notes. And it’s affordable! Beautyhabit sells a 50ml bottle for $110 and a 12ml bottle for $44 (not affiliated).

Okay – I freely admit that I don’t know that much about Amber and how it reacts on my skin and or with other components, so I was always a bit afraid of it…. however, I must say that I blind bought (shrugs to hide her face covered in her hands) Ambre Loup. And Wowie!!! It’s a winner, and a keeper! (Thanks to Kafkaesque’s review……)
It is a lot of Amber and SMOKE!! Reminded me straight away of LaDDM which is STRONG on my scent eating skin so I guess I got lucky there.
It is compelling and does loop back & forth and is so precise in the scents it is throwing that you can’t help but feel like you have a friend along for the thrill.

SOTD = Tom Ford Amber Absolute

This had been discontinued, resurrected and discontinued again. Why, Tom, why? You probably ought to reate a flanker to F—king Fabulous and call it I am F—king Nuts.

Several years ago, the perfumer for Amber Absolute, Christophe Laudimiel was a speaker at Sniffapalooza. I asked why it was discontinued and he said that the OTT resins he used gummed up the machine parts.

It was a good week to do ambers and I am quite tempted to coninue this next week. Great choice for a community project!

Wasn’t in an ambery mood today so I’m wearing Bottega Veneta EdP’s plush suedey goodness. Haven’t worn it for a while but it’s perfect for an autumn Saturday.

Twinsing with several of you by using the last of my Ummagumma sample on one arm and the last of Grand Soir on the other. Ummagumma was dense and chewy…brought to mind TF Tobacco Oud, although it’s been a long time since I tried that one so I don’t know it it’s an accurate comparison. Grand Soir was more sugary by comparison…like the crust on creme brûlée. Grand Soir is beautiful in its simplicity and is going to haunt me. I don’t have any MFK in my wardrobe and this year I’m having a milestone birthday….this purchase is totally justified and Donatella most certainly approves!

Thank you! ???? Yes, pull that baby out!! It has been perfect warm temps here the last couple days and I have found it totally wearable. I had the impression this was more of an autumn/winter scent, but I think I could wear it all. the. time. (Of course I say that now when it’s not 110 ????)

I went extreme old school with Dana Tabu . Fragrantica users put amber as the second strongest note. Mmmmm…
