Thursday scent of the day 3/15

Posted by Robin on 15 March 2018 281 Comments

Almost-Friday, plus the Ides of March. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Hermès Eau des Merveilles, layered with Eau Claire des Merveilles.

Reminder: 3/16 will be Amber Friday...wear a fragrance with an amber note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Hermès Ano Pigment Bracelet in lacquered wood is $360.

In Idole de Lubin today and halfway through overspraying this morning the atomiser stopped working. Grrrr!

Grabbed my bottle of Shalimar and had 2 sprays since I had not worn it in ages. Two seconds later I started coughing uncontrollably. It is better now but just hoping I have not developed an allergy to it. It would be devastating 🙁

Maybe there was dust or some residue on the sprayer? Or maybe it activated something that needed to be clear that was already in your sinus passages? Let’s go with that, the alternative is too scary to contemplate ????

The coughing fit was clearly pure coincidence and caused by something Shalimar-unrelated. Persevere!! 😀

It makes sense. When I sprayed on it I also found it too smoky. I had not worn it in a long time and I think I had forgotten that Shalimar is a big one. 2 sprays it is too much for me these days. Next time I will have only one spray or dab it.

Started off decidedly off-theme as I am considering more candidates for swapmeet (Puredistance I likely to be rehomed this weekend). On the other arm is a sample of Unum Lavs which has a tad of amber somewhere in it but which mostly taught me everything I need to know about Opponax.

Oh, really? I recently bought a decant of Les Nereides Opoponax and while I quite like it, I have no idea what I’m smelling as it’s not a note I’ve ever focused in on.

I also had a sample of Unum Lavs, which taught me that I have zero response to incense-forward perfumes 😉 I’ve never been inside or anywhere near a church (or temple or dojo or etc) where incense was burned. My only incense connection is to hippy types who burned Nag Champa.

There’s something about Nag Champa though! 😉

The Lavs description on fragrantica says that Opponax — which is apparently meant to be Opopanax (thanks for the correction!) — is the scent of the myrrh. I immediately associated it with Jardins D’Ecrivains Marlowe which was a blind buy that I regretted as too challenging. The myrrh came across to me as a cold almost menthol feeling; my notes on Marlowe called it “cola.” The Lavs grew on me today and I will be trying it again, and will definitely be keeping this sample for reference.

        https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Unum/Lavs-29991.html

I would never have categorized Lavs as an “incense” since it’s not smoky or incense-y to me at all! Also not especially “churchy” (not like, say, the feeling I got from more than one Areej Le Dore as an extreme example). I guess Kafka really liked the Les Néréides – not one I’d heard of!

Thank you! I really love it when I wear it. I always think of this as an amber since the backdrop to me smells strongly of labdanum/benzoin, maybe a little vanilla. It reminds me a lot of Ambre 114 in that powdery amber kinda way with added incense and some other stuffs.

I sprayed some on my hand the other day (had it out for amber week) and I get 100% spiced cider. It is fun, but I can’t get past the Halloween association, so October is the only time it feels *right* to me.

Incidentally, I was at a sephora yesterday sampling and thought about getting one of Givenchy Pi for my H, but didn’t. It was only hours later that I realized a Pi sample on Pi day would’ve been perfect!

sounds good! What kind of musk oil did you use? I was curious to learn about the ritual of putting some dabs of musc oil on as done in the Middle East and Europe – I’m familiar with pre-layering with oil or moisturizer – just not targeted musk oil on wrists and the nape of the neck – it sounds very romantic .

Yes indeed! Happy to have it at last! I’m finding that one spray is perfect for daytime/office (total skin scent with one spray), and a couple more sprays amps it up in the evening.

I’m also fascinated at the difference between being sprayed and my dabber sample. Much more musky depth when sprayed…

I use Retin-A and have sensitive skin, I love La Roche Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, the tint looks natural, it’s lightweight and absorbs easily. I just got a bottle online for 25% off on their friends & family sale.
Another lightweight sunscreen I adore is Missha’s All Around Safe Block SPF 50/PA+++, it’s lightweight, moisturizes and my skin glows, it’s also a nice primer for under foundation.

The NY Times article yesterday got me thinking about Hermes Twilly, and remembering how peppy it was. When I woke up this morning (way too early) I decided that was exactly what the doctor ordered, and pulled out my sample. Peppy indeed!

I do too, I just wish there were a bit more going on in this if you know what I mean. Still, sometimes a fragrance that smells fun and stays exactly the same all day is just what you want 🙂
Your EdM is probably the fragrance I wear more than any other. Always a good choice!

SotD = Eau des Merveilles! It’s been too long.

Gosh that Hermes bracelet is pretty. I don’t so much go for leather goods anymore, but beautifully crafted wood? Sign me up.

Yesterday was super busy and that energy has somehow hung onto me. I woke very early this morning, browsed the blogs, and found the Black Narcissus posted an interesting story about the new Hermessence scents. He is fascinating.

The Origami scent mentioned yesterday on NST made me smile. Perfume names that directly reference the arts and handcrafts are clever.

And I stumbled upon this wonderful hinoki wood and glass tool for making pickles. I must make some pickles soon.

Chiming in to agree with KellyC. To me it smells like Shalimar minus the skank; perhaps more complex, and with a very vintage sensibility. To my mind, it’s a must-try for Shalimar fiends (or fans.)

Feeling a bit sassy today, so I’m wearing Angel. It took me so long to be able to wear it well. Back in the nineties, I worked the perfume counter at my store, and a women would come in and just smell the box and smile. She never bought it, but seeing her love for it, made me want to experience it the way she did. The only perfume I can think of having that feeling for is Original Fendi ( RIP) anyway, happy to finally being able to wear Angel.

I finally found an amber in my collection – albeit a sample – that isn’t too heavy for the spring-like weather we’re having this week: Hermes Eau de Mandarine Ambree. This is really lovely, and a perfect balance between light, warm amber, and juicy citrus, and the passionfruit note keeps it from the sweeter territory of Elixir des Merveilles (which I also own). I find it far more versatile than the other citrus scents (Eau de Neroli Dore and Eau de Orange Verte) in the Colognes Hermes collection. I am definitely jonesing for a 15 ml travel bottle of this!

I love Blue Amber, but you’re right in how intense that first blast is, though I wouldn’t say I find it unpleasant. However, the last time I wore it, I immediately freaked out at how strong and heavy it was to wear into work. Thought I might have to wash it off, but no one said a word to me about my perfume, thank goodness.

I thought about wearing it this week but didn’t think it was a good idea to tempt fate a second time.

You guys, I smell sooo good. After Aparatchik posted about Ava Luxe Ambra Tibet yesterday, I knew I had to dig out my sample. I hesitated because I thought it might be too much for work (I still think it might be), but once I lifted the cap to smell it, I knew I would spray it anyway. This is a quintessential amber perfume to me. I think Ava Luxe makes some of the best ambers I’ve smelled.

I really like the clean lines and color of that bracelet. It wouldn’t work with my jeans and flannels shirts, but still…

Still wearing Chypre Mousse from yesterday. Still going strong, too. Money well spent! ???????? I very kind perfumista sent me a box bursting with goodies, so after chores and shower I think I may try Slow Dive.

I have a whole list of chores to do today, which I’m not looking forward to. Yesterday was beautiful, so I went up to Portland to meet with a super nice guy who has a trailer like the one I’m considering. Pretty sure I’ve narrowed it down to which manufacturer, now a whole list of options and what size to order?! Decisions, decisions…

Another thing on the agenda is to go cull my perfumes. My little storage area is getting tight, so I may have to send a few bottles out into the universe to get some love.

Ambers going strong here (and the weather is cooperating with rain and more rain) – SOTD is Parfums de Nicolai Amber Oud. I think some reviewer who loved it very much compared it to lavender ice cream and I can see that – in any case, husband sniffed the air and asked “is that a Harry Lehmann?” (perfume by weight store in Berlin that he’s very nostalgic for). So I may have found a scent for him to replace Terre d’Hermes once it’s used up! Although I still want to follow up on Robin’s eau de sport suggestion as well. Happy Thursday!

Here’s a review of the store in English on fragrantica:
        https://www.fragrantica.com/news/Harry-Lehmann-A-Vintage-Scent-Heaven-in-Berlin-9440.html
Basically, the perfume is sold by volume, and it’s in these big glass balloon bottles. It’s fun, but I never found a scent I really loved. That may be due to my inability to try perfume in a store without going slightly nuts!

No amber for me (other than Old Spice Amber anti-perspirant) since I just grabbed a sample from the bag I brought with me to CA.

Kelly Caleche, which is often my go-to travel scent, since I bought a pack of 20 travel sprays rather than a bottle….

I don’t have a lot of amber in my scents, which is odd since I quite like its richness. If I were at home, I’d probably be spraying the Old Spice Amber body spray just for fun.

Well, since you must know ☺️ Of those five, my favorites were Iris 39 and Jasmine 17

Iris 39 seemed super refined to me – I immediately liked it, and later on I think I smelled some doll head – which I generally like. Overall it seems like an iris version of agent provocateur. Later, I read the reviews on fragrantica and the consensus seems to be fairly different from my first impressions.

I really liked Jasmine 17! Jasmine can be tricky for me – unfortunately, some commercial toilet cleaner producers seem to have nailed certain white tropical flowers in their compositions, and sadly, I have spent too much time around industrial toilets, and not flowering bushes in the tropics. But this was lovely.

I will have to revisit Labdanum 18.

I did not care for Lys 41 or Santal 33 at first sniff.

Disclosure! These are just first impressions!

Last weekend I stopped by my local Nordstrom (it’s tiny!), and suddenly noticed several Le Labo testers behind the counter. I asked my friendly SA, and she said they had it for some clients who asked for it but they weren’t sure if they would carry it in the store. Of course, I immediately had to make myself 5 samples: all those that I’ve never got to testing on skin because I liked them less than others.

I had read some unflattering comments about the perfumer and the scents so my expectations weren’t super high, but I find all of them pleasant and wearable. I think Holi Water and Coeur Noir are my top two but I’d like to try the rest of them.

Oh my word! Fantastic does not even begin to describe how wonderful the fragrance is.

You know how it is not advisable to wear holey socks or underwear in case something happened and you needed to remove your shoes or God forbid you needed to have your clothes cut off due to an emergency? Well, you might want to think about what you leave at work, just in case you suddenly could not to back to your workplace to retrieve your belongings and need someone to pack them up to send them home.

To be continued in another comment since my train stop is coming up ….

      Perfumes? Pffft, that’s nothing.

No, it wasn’t me. Someone needed to have his belongings sent to his home. Besides the usual stuff (cans of Red Bull, shoe horns, for example), he had 6 pairs of what looked like high end Italian leather shoes, each shined to a high gloss and stored with a wooden shoe form insert. Talk about a shoe fetish and whatever that could mean, if I ever see him again, I don’t think I can look him in the eye because I would be too busy looking at his shoes.

Yesterday, drained a really old one of Amber Narguile (either it went off or my nose/taste has really changed, but it seemed really tame) and MdO Amber- a solid like but I can live without it. Then dabbed on some Grand Soir. Wore more of it today and oh my gosh, I love this one. It’s a little treasure that has been sitting there unloved for so long. How much have a spent on other junk in the meantime?!?!?! ????
