Thursday scent of the day 2/15

Posted by Robin on 15 February 2018 233 Comments

USPS Year of the Dog stamp 2018

Almost-Friday, plus, National Hippo Day and Susan B Anthony Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

It's a stretch, but playing on the lucky bamboo theme in the stamp, I went with Hermès Le Jardin de Monsieur Li, inspired by a (real? imaginary? I can't remember, if I ever knew) Chinese garden with giant bamboo, among other things. Anyway, I am smelling most auspicious.

Reminder: on 2/16 we're celebrating the Lunar New Year...wear an auspicious fragrance to ring in the Year of the (Earth) Dog.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the USPS 2018 Year of the Dog stamp is 50¢. "Combining original artwork by Kam Mak with two elements from the previous series of Lunar New Year stamps—Clarence Lee’s intricate cut-paper design of a dog and the Chinese character for “dog,” drawn in grass-style calligraphy by Lau Bun—art director Ethel Kessler has created a culturally rich stamp design that celebrates the diversity of the American experience."

Today’s SOTD is Edward Bess’ Spanish Veil, from a sample received from Aedes. Holy moly, this is absolutely gorgeous! I wasn’t terribly impressed with EB’s initial foray into perfume in 2012; Eau la la was kind of meh, especially for the price. I spotted this one when picking out my free samples for an Aedes order, and the listed notes for this one – tonka bean, sandalwood, guaic wood – sounded promising.

Well, this MORE than lives up to its promise! It has a rich, slightly resinous quality. There is mystery and sexy, warm skin behind that black veil. You just close your eyes, tilt back your head, and inhale this beauty. It has rich but gentle sillage – at least dabbed from the vial – so it’s very office friendly. I’ve just had two other early-bird colleagues tell me “you smell so good,” and that never happens to me at work! Jessica’s review from last year – https://nstperfume.com/2017/02/23/edward-bess-spanish-veil-fragrance-review/ – is spot on, with the caveat that I’m not getting the sense of mimosa that she did; that’s a relief for me, since I generally hate what that note does on my skin.

I think I know what I want for my birthday this year…..

So fun to see a dog-themed slant in the SOTD thread image every single day this week!

I started a reorg project for my samples last night and got overwhelmed. I’m skipping iris for now since I need to get a handle on these multiple piles o’ vials. Starting the day in CB IHP Cradle of Light.

Good morning all. Going to be nearly 65 degrees today so the grey skies are a bit more bearable.

Today is my Mom’s birthday. Oddly enough it is also my Aunt’s birthday…born on the same day, seven years apart. Two remarkable women (and hefty wine drinkers ????????????).

In Noun by Bogue which I was terrified of after reading the reviews but this is outstanding. No Slim Jim note here.

    Have a great day!

AW, happy birthday to your mom and your aunt!

My mother was thrilled when one grandchild was born on her birthday, and my younger son was likewise when his cousin was born on his birthday.

Happy Birthdays to your mom and aunt! In my family, we have cousins born on the same day, 5 years apart.

I laughed at being terrified after reading reviews; I’ve been in that boat, too. Sometimes that terror is justified….. ???? Glad to hear it worked out better for you!

I layered two Lush scents today: Devil’s Nightcap (mossy and earthy) and Dirty body spray (minty and grassy). I think I kind of smell like a dog who rolled in the grass on a wet day (well, minus the wet fur – just grass, moss and mud). Not very office-friendly but it’s a fun combo.

Yay, it’s Almost Friday! This week seems to drag on and on and on. At least it’s sunny and around 30’F. Compared to just a few days ago, it’s positively balmy. It won’t last but I am really enjoying the sun and warmth.

I really don’t know what to do with my bottle of Nobara-Cha. I mailed a bottle of Agent Provacateur within Canada for the Freebie Meet and it cost me over $15 (Canadian). I don’t want to spend that much money to get rid of a bottle of scent that I already spent well over $100 on. Cautionary tale – don’t blind buy.

Just got back and we got great news. They can take the tumor without taking the leg! The wound will not be able to be completely closed (not enough skin on the leg), so it will take about 6 weeks to fully heal, but I am so relieved! Of course, we still need to know what grade the tumor is, but if we remain lucky and it is a low grade, there’s a good chance it will never come back. Thank you all for your good wishes!!

What a relief! Sounds like there’s still lots of bumpy road ahead but at least they are confident they can get the whole thing off and keep the leg. Fingers crossed that the growth is benign (or if not then that it goes dormant!!!).

I always loved writing and I took some Calligraphy (Copperplate) lessons here in Montreal, I loved it so much, I am continuing practicing by myself and taking some more lessons.
I find it very relaxing, cause you have to concentrate a lot on the writing, you forget everything else . It is hard but since I am doing this only for myself there is no pressure and just a pure enjoyment. I really recommend it.

SOTD is Le Dix, partly because I have to interview someone today and need to be office-friendly, and partly just because I love it.

therabbitsflower, if you’re here today: I had no idea PG Cuir d’Iris had been d/c’d, and you’re right that it has disappeared from everywhere. Don’t lose hope – keep watching ebay, and even etsy – there are some etsy shops that specialize in hard-to-find perfumes, and the CdI might show up there one day.

Showered and mixed Boots Almond body butter with my regular body lotion. A couple of spritzes of Prada Infusion d’Amande sample courtesy of a kind NSTer. May I say I love how I smell?

Heading to a conference tomorrow for the weekend. Been told scents are not allowed. Sad…but I understand. Maybe I’ll sneak the body butter with me….it’s so subtle and close.

I used to have a small jar of that Boot’s. It’s pretty subtle, don’t think it would stand out. I was at a group meditation this week and the woman sitting next to me had her leftover Thai food in a bag right next to me and the smell was really getting to me after a while. So, I guess I understand, too.

Retrying Queen from a sample again, and still not getting on with it. One of the altos in my community chorus wears it and it smells SO GREAT on her, but it’s making me feel queasy. (Same way that most Lauders do — it *smells* fine, but my stomach always rebels 2 hours in.) Thinking of scrubbing and going for something else. Vamp a NY, maybe.

Vamp a NY is a winner for me — though I swear, it’s near identical to TF Orchid Soleil. I should do a side by side and figure out if I really need to keep both. I also wonder about Vamp in colder weather; I tried OS in deep winter once and it did not agree with me, perhaps like what you’re reporting re Queen. I never get the tortilla/buttered corn thing thankfully, just OTT goodness in these two.

Made the happy discovery yesterday that Santal 33 is a perfect office scent for me – long lasting but low projecting, smells wonderful, and I’m far enough from hipster land that it’s not a an ubiquitous scent. Shout out to Tiffanie for the freebie meet Le Labo set she sent my way! 🙂

Hmm. Maybe I should split that one. I want about 10ml, for sticky summer days, but I do not want a whole bottle. (For the record, it was completely fabulous on Kauai last July, but until teh hubs retires and buys that condo in Kapa’a…) So until Ari commissions a 10ml travel spray, I guess a split is the only way for me to get a small portion.

MEM is one of the most interesting perfumes I have smelled. I love the lavender, and I adore ylang, but together? Whoa! And champaca is usually a hard NO for me. But in MEM that note makes me want to sniff more more more. It’s that rare attraction-repulsion jolie laide feeling.

And the whole of MEM works together like a beautiful piece of clockwork, or a sculpture. I love it.

I’m in Angela Flanders’ Patchouli Spice, which despite not having a single drop of lavender in it, smells very much like lavender to me. I did a wrist to wrist with Caldey Island Lavender… I still smell the PS as a lavender–a lavender patchouli with maybe a hint of ginger! Okay, next to the Caldey Island I am now better able to pick out the notes that are supposed to be there, ostensibly patchouli, ginger, and cardamom… This scent is very auspicious as I always enjoy a bracing lavender, even if it is really patchouli, cardamom, and ginger!

Good morning all! I need to start getting out of bed earlier to keep up with NST, I read everyone’s comments in tne evening, but it’s not the same. Meanwhile, our warm weather continues, and I’m hot and sweaty over breakfast, which is not a common thing. I’ll be wafting Ninfeo Mio today.

I’m in Shalimar Light today which is such a love for me, but we are having the very unusual rainy day here in NM and I wish I’d gone with the EdP or a dab of the extrait.

Heart breaking for Florida. Just so devastating. 🙁

I am looking forward to the splitmeet!

After lunch today, I spent a few minutes watching a backhoe pick up the debris left over from the demolition of a small house on property the city just purchased. They plan for it to be green space, but of course since it is directly behind the library, I plan on it being future expansion space. The reason that I am mentioning it is that the first thing that grabbed my attention was the smell of wet dirt. The smell of wet dirt was intoxicating. I am aware of Demeter’s Dirt, but can anyone think of another fragrance that smells like wet dirt?

Have you tried Demeter Thunderstorm? That’s quite earthy.
Two smellbents that are a bit more green but remind me of the smell of digging over my vegetable garden are Florists Fridge and, to a lesser extent, Hot House…they are definitely more of a gardeners dirt than a demolition dirt. A 4ml of Florists Fridge might be worth the risk?

Robin, I’m really digging the look of today’s postage stamp. However, I have a bunch of the “Forever” stamps that rarely get used now that so many of our bills are paid online.

SOTD = Byredo Gypsy Water, from the sample stash. I keep thinking that this sample is almost done, but it keeps surprising me. Needed something easy today for errands and other reasons.

My dad collected stamps but once they became self-stick, there was no point in collecting them except the First Day covers. Anyway, so whenever he saw colorful and interesting stamps, he bought several sheets of each. We have so many of the 32,33,37c stamps that I ended up giving $150 worth of these stamps to a neighbor who does not pay bills online and I myself continue to use them…all I have to do is replenish my 10c and under stamps. And I also have a ton of the forever stamps. My stamp “collection” feels like my perfume collection — I will not be able to use them up in my lifetime! How’s this for a first world problem?

I’m going to confess that when I had too many stamps with an out of date rate for first class, I used them without regard for overpayment in order to use them up. Thank God for Forever Stamps!

Thank you. He also went OTT with state quarters. He tracked when the quarters were issued and made his rounds of the banks to get multiple roll$$$ and for the ones where he couldn’t get the minimum quantity, he went to a coin dealer. He also bought coin books and made complete state quarter sets and gave them away – every teenager worker at Wegmans, children or grandchildren of Wegmans employees, all my cousins (ALL, including the adult cousins and even their boyfriends and girlfriends and children)…I could go on and on but won’t — you get the picture. We also gave him all our state quarter change.

SOTD = Prada Olfactories Purple Rain

I love this from its hefty clear crystal no sharp edges bottle to the effervescent iris vetiver depths. It is a lot less powdery version of Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue but more, way way more expensive. Is it worth it? You bet! This is the one of those rare occasions where the philosophy of why pay for something cheaper if you can afford the more expensive item works. ????

While YMMV, I was perplexed as to why anyone thought this was rooty and resembles ISM! I do love ISM.

Guys, I have a $50 off $200 purchase SFA coupon for which Beauty purchases qualify. What should I get? Decisions decisions!

Testing two samples simply because they are by Alberto Morillas, and I like some of his work.

Guccy Guilty Absolute for women is a fruitchouli, very well done, but not my thing (I was hoping for a slightly more feminine version of GGA for men). Also I think I would prefer it done with a light of dose real patchouli rather than whatever patch fraction they are using. The raspberry-peach elements are pleasing.

Bulgari Goldea is very pretty, but it’s kind of a big-haired blonde scent to me.

I think they are both worth sampling.

I was also hoping that GGAPF was a feminized version of the Pour Homme which I felt was too masculine. The fruitchuoliness hurt my teeth!

I did not think of that. The only place that has it right now is Macy’s, I think and they don’t give out any samples unless you buy something and even then, you sometimes have to pry them out of their hands.
