Friday scent of the day 1/19

Posted by Robin on 19 January 2018 337 Comments

Happy Vanilla Friday! (Plus, happy Popcorn Day, and happy birthday to Dolly Parton.) Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with vanilla.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I went with Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser.

Reminder: on 1/26, wear one of your "top 10 of winter" fragrances (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of summer" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Mine, too, and more specifically, the Queen of all vanillas, Shalimar Mexique. But this a.m., my hand went to Hermes.

Tauer Vanilla Flash – so glad I have a bottle of this (someone mentioned it’s been discontinued due to vanilla shortage).

Scent twins! I’m also in Vanilla Flash, and feeling a little sad that it’s not available now, especially since I only have the rollerball. I hope it goes back into production when Andy can get his hands on the material he needs – maybe in 2019?

Saw that, it’s too bad. Makes it clear why so many of the big fragrance & flavor companies have changed the way they source raw materials to have their own agreements with sellers.

It’s not discontinued, just temporarily unavailable (although it was still in stock at Luckyscent yesterday). He said it should be ready to go back into production by the summer.

Chose MAC Shadescent Creme de Nude with a dash of Perry Ellis Oud Black Vanilla Absolute. The former softens and lifts the latter, and the latter gives depth to the former. Only possible because it’s below freezing this morning in SC, US. It’s going to be a good day. Happy Vanilla Friday, ya’ll!

Twins!! My first niche bottle, first online purchase (no AG to be had around here) and the only bottle in my collection that is half empty. I think I wore the heck out of it the first winter I had it. Still love it even though now I have lots of options.

Well I looked for my Dyptique Eau Duelle which is so vanilla and can’t find it. I may have given it away as I seldom go so vanilla. I like it but my mom wears it and who wants to smell like their mom, ha ha. So I am in Volutes instead. Maybe a bit but not a main note.

A few months back, I kept smelling a chocolately sweet smell near my bed, and I absolutely couldn’t find the source. It was pretty strong, so I eventually took the mattress off the bed, cleaned the frame and furniture, etc, thinking that someone had spilled something in my room. It didn’t smell bad, but I was just stymied to what it was and where….

Fast forward a few WEEKS later….I opened up a box of samples to look for something, and a mini of Angel body lotion had leaked the TINEST bit in the box! :) Fabulous stuff….You smell great!

It’s my favourite flavour, but to be honest, I usually just buy whatever’s on sale, when I buy it, which isn’t all that often. This batch was President’s Choice (the house brand for an immense Canadian chain of supermarkets which has different names in different parts of the country but locally is called the Atlantic Superstore).

Today is a good day – it’s Friday and I’m both a popcorn AND vanilla fan (although separately – I don’t like sweet popcorn).

Wearing a small spritz of Queen on one wrist and a dab of my remaining 3 drops of SDV decant on the other wrist. SDV is really perfection in my vanilla world.

I fell really hard for Queen this winter. I got a decant (from one of you lovelies) this fall, but was on the fence about it. Once the weather got really cold, I started wearing it and am absolutely smitten! It’s soo good. I bought a 15 ml mini spray bottle for about the price of a latte and biscotti. Can’t beat that!

I had planned to wear Habanita today but at the last minute wanted a really gourmand vanilla so I went for the (previously unsniffed) Vanille Francaise by Memoire Liquide. Which I swear is the name on the sample vial but I can’t find any mention of it online. I smell like a cupcake but there’s a mushroomy-earthy thing going on that stops it from being too sweet. I don’t love it but it scratched the itch!

Well, I have zero vanilla-centric fragrances in my little collection so I can’t fully participate in the challenge. I was going to wear Balenciaga Le Dix (which does have a whisper of vanilla), but in the end my hand reached for a different named-after-the-house-address fragrance, 24 Faubourg. It smells as if it could have vanilla, but I don’t think it actually does … so no points for me. But I smell great. :) Happy Friday, all!

I think 24, Faubourg has some amber in the base, so you’re not far off. You smell nice!

Thank you! You know, this never happens, but this morning I had sprayed from my regular bottle (almost empty), and then decided to add a little more from the back-up bottle … and the newer one actually smells better! Less buttercream frosting, and waaay more chypre-ish and interesting. Maybe it’s just the age of the older bottle (not that old, but had turned a bit darker in color lately)? Who knows – I’m just happy that the back-up is better rather than worse!

Is Le Dix named after the address? I have always been under the (perhaps unfounded) impression that it was named such as a direct reference to No 5.

You smell divine, either way. I should pull my bottle out as I don’t wear it nearly enough and it’s fabulous in winter.

Angela’s review of 24 Faubourg says Le Dix was named after the address, but I admit I’m taking it on faith. :) Her review says: “Hermès released 24, Faubourg in 1995. It’s named after the address of Hermès’s flagship store and is one of a handful of perfumes named after fashion-centric addresses, including Balenciaga Le Dix and Chanel 31 Rue Cambon.”

Scent twins. I love that it’s not super sweet. It reminds me of baking with my mom when I was little. She always let me add the vanilla extract and that’s what it reminds me of. As I just lost my mom 1 month ago yesterday, it’s a comforting memory.

I am in very recent SDV today…muled back travel spray from Paris so the very current formula I expect.

It has a certain sourness to my nose initially…maybe I should be reading this as booze. ;) But then it transforms a bit and gets fairly close to my old, almost dried up SDV decant.

So into vanilla. Here’s my to try list below…let me know what else to add…I may break down and do a LS order this weekend. I am very close to arriving at an “amount” or budget as some might call it. ;)

    Dulcis in Fundo
    Acqua e Zucchero
    Farmacia Vaniglia del Madagascar
    Madera

I had so many options today, but I ended op going for two vanillas by one and the same perfumer: Vanilia (discontinued) L’Artisan Parfumeur, and Fleur des Comores, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier. Both done by the late, great Jean Laporte. They do well together, and Luca does call FdC Vanilia 2, and I agree. Have a great weekend everyone, and I’m off to another Saturday filled with an exam ???? ????!

I had planned on Tihota today ( my very first back up bottle ever) ut yesterday beat me over the head with vanilla, so I used Dame Black FLower Mexican Vanilla body cream and hair oil, but layered Ellie Saab’s Essence No. 1 Rose over it. The rosewater of the scents really blends well with Dame’s vanilla.

Tihota is one of a few perfumes with which our “twinness” doesn’t work: I can’t even say that I just didn’t like it – the only time I tried it, I thought I’d be sick. To put it in prospective: I’d rather wear Carnal Flower (the second perfume where you and I differ) than Tihota.

Decided on SHL Taklamakan today. A not-too-sweet woody, dry vanilla. Not foody, and slightly salty, which is how I like it. Prefer it slightly more in warmer weather as I do get the “hot sand” effect it touts. Good I like it because it’s tenacious on me and it’ll be with me until I shower. Looking forward to finally seeing I, Tonya tonight! TGIF!

Have fun at the movie! I bought a decant of Taklamakan and wore it over the summer so I’ve only smelled it in warm weather. It was lovely, and I also love saying the name :)

Have you ever tried Phaedon Dzhari? It’s in that same desert-evoking category with Taklamakan and L’Air du Desert. I finished off a decant a couple of summers ago and have been wanting some since, but it’s hard to find.

Last night I googled “Best Vanilla Fragrances”, when I was thinking about today, and Victoria’s Secret Coconut Passion came up on two lists. So that’s what I went with, because I just gave the body mist to my 13 yr old for Christmas.

It’s cheap, but it’s pretty good! Smells like I spilled a bottle of vanilla extract on myself, but it’s fading fast…. :)

Pajamas, old movies, bourbon & Emeraude. It’s liquid cuddle. It is so sensual but comforting. I even tried just a dab on my pillow. It is divine.

I’m wearing and loving Eau Duelle EDT. I find the EDP to be too much, but the EDT is perfect – there’s enough herbs and smoke to make the vanilla behave itself.

I just want to give Dolly Parton a huge happy birthday – not only does she have an amazing voice, but her Imagination Library is absolutely incredible. They send more than one million books to kids around the world each month, which is mind-blowing. Props to Dolly!

Hi everyone! I’m wearing Lancome Oud Bouquet today. I honestly don’t smell oud at all. Lots of sweet, sweet vanilla, and spice. I looked up the notes, and it’s possibly saffron I smell. This stuff if very strong, just one spray is enough. Have a great day!

I went with Shalimar Ode a la Vanille sur la Route du Mexique today. It’s not as cold out as it was a few days ago, but still a little chilly, so it hits the spot. And it’s not a sweet vanilla, which I like.

It’s Janis Joplin’s birthday today and I am listening to her rendition of Ball and Chain. Today was a tough choice for vanilla. I had the choice of regular Shalimar, Shalimar Ode a la Vanille, Havana Vanille, SDV, and Vanilla Flash. At the end of the day, I went with Vanilla Flash because it’s awesome.

Well, it has been an extremely busy week with the new house and work, so I haven’t been able to put a lot of thought into the project. Since I enjoyed the Made in Heaven so much on Wednesday I went with it again yesterday- I enjoyed it even more than Wednesday. I could still catch whiffs of it last night which was nice.

Today I am back in my beloved Shalimar! It’s soooo perfect to me. The new house has built-in bookshelves in the master bedroom and I’ve dedicated a whole shelf to perfume. I love it so much!

Queen. Pretty sure there’s just a wee bit of vanilla in there.

Security Woes, Episode 1: Paid money to park in a casino lot for the night. Every casino I’ve been to has been free, so I’m already peeved. Rec’d The obligatory dashboard pass to say I coughed up my money and displayed it as indicated. Woken up not once, but TWICE (!), by security pounding on my van and flashing a tactical light in my eyes! I finally rolled the window down, AFTER having to thrown some clothes on and they want to know why I was parked in the lot?! Grrrr! Security people are just a hairs breath away from being fully fledged Gestapo. Pretty sure if they had the power they would have taken me to a room for ”questioning.”.

I complained to management and got a shrug of the shoulders.

    I’m PO’d but I still smell good✌????

    Hi All!

    1) SOTD: Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie. I smell like a sexy vanilla/almond cookie. Perfectly unisex and fun; I can actually see this as something a mom would spray over the whole family. Y9ou can check it out here:

    2) Strayed from my prescribed diet and OOFF waking up this morning was not pleasant. That will teach me! Sticking with straight and narrow.

    3) OOTD: Blue tunic, dark skinny jeans, and sneaker boots. Big earrings.

I am all about a sneaker boot! I bought 2 pair (1 fur-lined) this fall and another pair today (!) I usually wear knee-length or ankle boots with a heel in winter, and the sneaker boot has been kind of life-changing. All mine are slip-on or have zippers – best of all possible worlds – and I’ve put shearling liners in them so they’re nice and cozy. I also got some really cute wool zip-up superga high tops. I don’t know if I’ll ever want to wear a heel again – even my moderate 2 1/2″ ones. Which is kind of a problem since I’ve got a closet full of them…

    M. Micallef Note Vanillee, which I’ve had as a sample kicking around for a long time. I did get citrus, so it seems to have survived well. Boozy, citrus Vanilla…just a tiny dab until I shower, then I’ll be more generous.

It occurs to me with the citrus and booziness here, I might add a hint of Vanilla to my ham glaze next time.

I wear this and wonder why I didn’t like vanilla at one time.

Gloomy Friday, dear friends. During this morning’s swim, I got pushed into the side of the pool and scraped my Apple watch against it. When I popped up, I discovered the waterproof casing had cracked.

You may recall that I broke an Apple watch while swimming last year, too. That time, it was mostly my own fault. This time, it wasn’t! And therefore I am much more unhappy. It works fine–I managed to turn it off and get it dry in time–but I can’t use it in the pool, which is my primary need for an Apple watch. Grump grump grump.

I’m wearing MFK Grand Soir in an attempt to give myself a hug, but it’s not cheering me up that much. The vanilla is less prominent to my nose, acting more as a soft base, but it’s certainly present. Hopefully, the day will get better from here :(

Yeah, the swimming tracker has always worked great for me!

Does your crack penetrate the surface? I just discovered that you can get screen protectors for the watch. I don’t know if those are swimming compatible, but they might help diffuse the impacts that result in cracked screens.

I feel a bit like I am cheating – wearing vintage Fendi today. I am sure there is vanilla in here but it sure isn’t the first thing I get! My 10 year old daughter smelled me and faked a dead faint. ????

Wearing LM Parfums Sensual Orchid from the decant waiting to pull the trigger on a FB purchase: what a beautiful perfume (thank you, hajusuuri). And it has vanilla in it – so I’m participating in the project.

Today is TF Tobacco Vanilla. I love this scent on cold days, I need another bottle! I need to start saving my pennies.

And as for Popcorn day, last night we had popcorn and I sprinkled it with some gifted homemade Smoked Garlic Salt. OMG! My friends need to sell it, they’d make a fortune.

My favorite sea salt is by a spice company in San Francisco called San Francisco Fire Sea salt, I add this (along with grated parmesan cheese) to popcorn and it’s stellar! Their Cherrywood smoked sea salt is also great – I enjoy it on a mixed greens salad with olive oil and lemon juice, it’s the perfect counterpart to balance the acidity of the lemon juice. Link to Spice Ace is below..

It’s a steamy hot morning and all thw windows and doors are open. The air smells like fresh mulch. I had a big bucket of windfall apricots I collected and have been stewing. and the sweet scent lingers. What a wonderful smell. Perfume: cardamon Coffee with BdV …really nice. That article about the hunter gatherers having abstract names for odours has got me fired up. I can’t decide if it makes perfect sense or no sense at all ( because it would require people to experience and respond to scent in one way? And they don’t). If a colour is given an abstract name ‘red’ we can all see it in our mind’s eye. And it would probably be a similar colour for everyone. But odour…the word for the smell in my house is Aprivert!

Hello all, from an exhausted Koenigsberg. Our shambling, stumbling programme is finally lurching through Cutover and Go Live this weekend, so everyone is busy and tired.

SOTD is Comptoir Sud Pacifique “Vanille Extreme”.

Notes are raw sugar, milk, vanilla and heliotrope absolute.

It’s okay, but a bit insipid. I much preferred yesterday’s re-test of sister fragrance “Vanille Abricot” – I might even buy that one, since I’ve enjoyed it both times I tested.

    Top: papaya, jackfruit and apricot;
    Base: vanilla and sugar.

That said, I am not buying perfumes right now. Design company is working out the remodelling of our Malaga place and until I get a number that doesn’t make me pass out, I am not buying frivolous things like perfume or clothes or food. (Okay, kidding about the food)

A hot and humid morning, so not like the usual Wellington weather – I love it! I’m eating breakfast in the traces of last night’s Fate, which arrived yesterday. I’d been dithering over this for years, and glad I finally made the purchase. It is very vanilla to my nose, but not too sweet. As I’m sure I’ve commented before, I love the smell of vanilla in baking, but not so much to wear.

Put Hermes Vanille Galante on this morning. I am going back & forth between liking it and feeling like I’m smelling shampoo. The vanilla note in it is nice, though.

Will be going to a Prokofiev festival tonight in Misia. I’d been planning to wear Shalimar Mexique today but didn’t, which might be for the best as I don’t think Misia on top of Shalimar Mexique would make for the most winning combination. I’m also battling the urge to spray myself with Queen Latifah Queen, but same conundrum. Queen might make a lovely perfume for a night at the symphony (although my neighbors may disagree) but I always wear Misia as it pairs so beautifully with the music. It also wears quietly on me so I don’t have to worry about gassing out the people around me.

    Happy Friday, all!

    Happy Friday, my fragrant friends,

SOTD–Field Notes From Paris, not vanilla-centric, but it’s in there with the smoke.

I’ve been MIA for much of the start of 2018, but I want to be more active here as the year unfolds. I also plan to organize the sh** out of my closet, including all my ‘fumes. In anticipation of upcoming swaps and freebies, can somebody tell the name of that thin, filmy tape that many of you use to wrap samples and caps for shipping? Also, where do you purchase it? I want to curate my collection and concentrate of the most beloved of my scents, share the rest, and simplify, simplify!!

Right! The so-called ‘praline’ accord… It’s funny, but I notice that accords that appear as listed notes in some of the HR flankers (like the green bamboo note that is supposed to be in HR Sport) are basically more articulated versions of things already lurking in the original. Not a new idea, I suppose, but one very well explored here!

Yeah, I actually didn’t find Dress Code and the edt to be *that* different beyond the top notes. The praline to me is just a slight variation of the vanilla to me. I do like it though-maybe I should actually wear it ????

Late posting today, but popping in on my lunch break. It’s a bit chaotic at work today, as we’re hoping for an 11th hour miracle to stave off the government shutdown that will be triggered at midnight without a short- or long-term budget from Washington. :-( (I work for a federal science agency.) It is so unbelievably disruptive to have make these kinds of preparations in the middle of long-term, time-sensitive projects, knowing how disruptive it will be to walk away and then start them up again days or weeks later, completely off schedule, while new work rolls in on top of what’s already behind. It’s frustrating to see just how dysfunctional our country has become. (Sorry for my mini-rant.)

Trying to stay focused today, and stick to our vanilla theme. Sweet scents are not what I want today, and I’ve mostly moved away from them, anyway, so Arquiste’s The Architects Club is working out nicely. I like its very unisex presentation: it’s a deep vanilla bean scent that is sugar-free and quite woody, with a very noticeable angelica note and a hit of smooth amber. It’s office friendly and season-less.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! And to my fellow feds, hang in there :-) .

It’s SUPER stupid and stressful and dysfunctional. Both my parents work for the federal government (they live in DC), so they have the great pleasure of having to deal with this nonsense every time it comes up. I recently listened to a Planet Money episode on how the budget system became so stupid, if you’re interested. It makes me furious.

Joining lots of you in Vanilla Flash. I’ve had a busy and semi stressful week so haven’t been posting but have worn vanilla all week.

My brake light switch went out on Tuesday, or it could have been a prior day, but no one on the road told me until a cyclist did during the evening commute. So I had to get that replaced, which ended up being free under warranty because Kia upgraded the part. Then ended up doing a full brake system replacement while my car was in the shop. Several hundred dollars later it feels really good to have that all taken care of. And I’m so ready for the weekend!

Robin, in response to a question you asked earlier this week: I think my tastes in vanilla have changed partly due to experience (or getting picky ????) and partly due to changing body chemistry. Also, I live in a different climate now then when I first started sniffing perfumes, so that might also factor in.

SOTD = back in Burberry Brit EdT. I think I am going to try to wear more of my bottles this year, rather than samples. So far, so good!
