Tuesday scent of the day 1/9

Posted by Robin on 9 January 2018 290 Comments

Marni Teapot Tote Bag

It's Tuesday, National Cassoulet Day and National Apricot Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing the original Marni, for the January 2015 project "Wear a fragrance from Prada or perfumer Daniela Andrier". Tea at the moment is Upton Bond Street English Breakfast.

Reminder: on 1/12, we're doing Rinse, repeat...pick a favorite community project from the past, and do it again. (If you need a reminder, here are the lists for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Marni Girl's Teapot Tote ("Yellow and white tote bag featuring a red tea pot print on the front with a spots and stripes design. The back features a blue and white background with a stick trees print and stripe pattern. Black strap handles.") is £70.80 at Cloudo Kids.

Good morning all! Sadly I caught a second child right after getting rid of the first. I feel a little better today, but not by much.

I picked Chamade EdT. My bottle is fromthe early 90’s, i believe. It starts sharp and green but melts into a seductive floral dry-down. Truly magical (and lasts all day!)

Stay warm, my Nothern Hemisphere friends!

I sometimes wish I could catch a second child! I’m about to get rid of (i.e. send back to college for the spring semester) my first and I miss him already.

Thanks! good to know you enjoy the currently available edt version too….if you ordered a tester, did it come with it’s lid?

Also – looks like Fragrancenet.com has a 37% off sale, yikes!

          • JadainGA says:
            9 January 2018 at 11:15 am

I paid the extra $5 for the cap! LOL! Sometimes I don’t care a bit (I order testers if it’s a cheaper fragrance/brand), but I wanted my Guerlain to have its’ cap…..

            9 January 2018 at 2:10 pm

I bought a tester of Insolence EdP. Big mistake. That bottle is fugly without context.

          • JadainGA says:
            9 January 2018 at 2:41 pm

Insolence is a perfect example of a bottle that really needs its cap! LOL! 🙂 I admit I’m as much a fan of beautiful bottles as I am the scent in many cases…..

          • flopper says:
            9 January 2018 at 3:16 pm

Wait, they charge extra for a cap (for a tester bottle)? I’ve not seen that before.

          • JadainGA says:
            9 January 2018 at 3:43 pm

Depending on the brand, I don’t buy the tester, but go for the regular bottle. Just depends on what I’m ordering! I will buy a tester if I don’t care about the bottle….

Day 2 of 9/16 Harvest Moon Friday: wear a fragrance with a nut or grain note.

SOTD is L`Artisan Parfumeur Noir Exquis (chestnut). It is sweet and nutty at the start, but the dry-down is coffee and burnt wood on me. Somewhat similar to Mancera Aoud Cafe at that stage. I wish the chestnut, vanilla and citrus stage lasted longer.

Though I have 14 scents for the chosen theme (a bit surprised there are so many), so maybe it won’t make it. But I root for it! I get almonds and flour.

I tried Rozy (the edp version) last week and was surprised at how much I disliked it. I was not expecting that reaction at all, but it was rather horribly animalic on me over two different trials so it’s just not going to work out. It’s probably my skin, because it’s quite clearly a well-done scent.

Glad I could help! And glad to find someone else who’s tried anything from them. I liked Realism but want to retry when it’s warmer. It’s a different green, very pastoral smelling to me. The samples I ordered are all mostly in the “a bit weird” category. Have you tried others?

The only other one I tried is Smokers’. I like it (particularly the opening), but would love to check how it works on someone who actually smokes. I never tried this house before (I think mostly because the reference to marie antoinette and sofia coppola were a no for me), but am so glad you directed me their way, and definitely plan to explore them more. Which of your samples would you recommend?

Thanks for the link! Ok, 1st off she looks like she’s 15.
I got Lartigue, Jackal, Silent Films, & Realism.
Lartigue is the most mainstream. Smells like an intense version of my R&G Fleur d’Osmanthus=peachy.

Silent Films does indeed smell like celluloid and vanilla. It’s a little weird, but not unpleasant. A bit sterile which is maybe the point.
Jackal =dirt+bitter cocoa. It’s challenging for the first 20 minutes-dirty/animalic. But I like the drydown.
I smelled Dauphine in a store in Soho and didn’t need another cosmetic-y one to try. I’m good in that dept. Pretty, almondy, rose, sweet.

I ordered them because I bought Goest Smoke & Violets which they made for a jewelry store near me in Brooklyn called Catbird and only available on the store’s website (or in-store). Love it and still my favorite of the bunch: more leathery, than smoky with a bit of heliotrope powderiness and a slightly soapy violet.

SotD is Ormonde Woman, and received a compliment from a co worker (you smell good, is that a chanel?)

    Yesterday I tried Narcotic Venus.
Despite the brand trying to be kinda edgy/niche (hipster bottle and names associated with drug use etc), this smells like a very safe, clean and polite white flower fragrance that could easily be made by a mainstream designer brand (michael kors and Gucci Bloom come to mind).
Its good though! A bit linear, and gets better after a while when warmed up by skin.

Back to 6/27/14 Forgotten Friend, I am wearing Teint de Neige by Lorenzo Villoresi. I love this perfume and never reach for it. Too many perfumes, too little time.

I might stick with this community project for the rest of the week, to give those perfumes that are unconsciously forgotten in my cabinet, the oppotunity to come out and shine.

PdR has a bit of something berry/fruity and rosy and I find it a little less powdery than TdN, and maybe slightly sweeter? TdN smells mostly of heliotrope to me after the initial blast which has some aldehydes-closer to baby powder smell-but more “adult”.

I mostly love Daniela Andrier’s work and have been meaning to try original Marni – I have and love Marni Rose. But today I’m continuing the Signature scent challenge theme in Vol de Nuit EDC. It’s less complex than the extrait formulation, but slightly more work-friendly because of that. Also less likely to stain my scarves – I discovered yesterday that one of my favorites really needs a bath. Yikes.

I’m not sure if it was from a bee bottle, but I have tried a small sample of the current EDT formulation – it’s nice, but pale and a bit weak compared to vintage EDT and EDC. And I can’t remember whether I’ve ever sampled an EDP formulation (or even if there IS one).

Disappointingly commando. I’m on a flight to SFO, and I was thinking I could spritz on something at duty free. Forgot that the duty free shop is SFO, not JFK. Oops. I could dig into the bag with samples, but probably don’t want to do that on the flight itself. I only packed sample vials for this trip to keep myself on track. Plus, I know my sister will have samples for me.

I’ll just stop at duty free on my way out of the airport in SF!

Very irritated at Jet Blue, by the way. They were one of the few airlines that boarded by row (after all the special folks had boarded.). I had my routine down to a science. Aisle seat, lowest row # in the first called for general boarding. Meant absolutely no issues with overhead space. They’ve changed to the dreaded boarding group process. Which means I’m later to board….I think they board window/middle before me. Luckily, there was space, but mostly because there were late boarders. Why did you ruin my perfect system??? It made me so happy. Sigh.

Airline travel is so miserable – first the horrible boarding process, then you get on and the seats are tinier and closer together each year. Sorry Jet Blue ruined it for you!

Children in strollers pre-boarded. Not as the first ones but before most of us. I will say it was relatively orderly. Last time I flew back from SFO it was a free for all…. and they did start boarding quite early, which was great.

Use them up: today’s sample is a mainstream, Ralph Lauren Woman. Inoffensive pretty thing, but I only sprayed a couple of times and it’s almost gone already. Perhaps because I have already had quite a day- my 13yo son fell on an icy driveway this morning (taking a shortcut in sneakers????) and had a large enough gash on his forehead that he needed 3 staples. The lack of common sense in teenagers is sometimes quite breathtaking. Fortunately it’s my day off so I was able to deal with it without having to cancel any classes. Having done my sampling duty, I’m off to put on some Ambre Precieux.

It is really nice. This is my first time wearing Idyllwind. I just noticed I misspelled it earlier.

I realized that I had a thing for rhubarb when I smelled and fell in love with Hermes Eau de Rhubarbe Ecarlate and then remembered that I also had the same reaction to L’Occitane Pamplemousse Rhubarb when I had first smelled it 🙂

Scent twin! I blind-bought this one to feed my rhubarb obsession, and it was a risk worth taking. I own and love several rhubarb-centric fragrances – Burberry Brit Red, Aedes de Venustas, DSH Albino, L’Occitane Pamplemousse Rhubarb – and Idyllwild is different enough from those to make it well worth owning and wearing. The rhubarb tea note is bright and juicy, and the conifer notes are subtle but distinguish it from other rhubarb scents with an incense-y greenness.

I also really want to try the rhubarb-heavy Olympic Orchids’ Chevalier Vert; I love many of Ellen Covey’s fragrances, and CV includes other favorite notes, such as tomato leaf, orris, violet, and pepper. Has anyone tried this one yet?

I tried Chevalier Vert before it was released (NOT because of any cool connection or anything! Ellen Covey was at a perfume sampling event at Tigerlily in SF) and I really liked it–but for the life of me I cannot recall the scent. Tomato leaf? Maybe it was the tomato leaf.

I have yet to try the current Diaghilev parfum. I liked the edp, but it was limited-edition and I understand it’s allll gone, and the parfum is noticeably different. Mostly I wonder how it might differ from the Pierre de Velay Extrait No. 11 that Roja also produces, and which I love. (I’m going to get a bottle of that somehow. Sometime. I’ve been making do with decants, but I’ve now blown through 2 5mls and am working down a 3rd. I just have to get a mule, because I don’t think he ships to the US.)

My husband loves Nutella, and he loves this fragrance.

He also loves sugary cereal, I am all ears if anyone has a good recommendation for a perfume reminiscent of sugary cereal – that is wearable 🙂

It’s a great day to make a cassoulet!

I haven’t actually tried it myself, but I think there is one from Lostmarc’h that is cereal-y. I had to look up the name, but Lann Ael is the one I’m thinking of. It is here: https://nstperfume.com/2009/06/02/summer-fun-brief-reviews-of-six-less-than-serious-perfumes-for-hot-weather/

Give Parfumerie Generale Praline de Santal a try. It reminds me of Cap’n Crunch (an observation seconded by the true authorities, my kids!). It very comforting and wearable, though.

Thank you Lisa D! You guys are the best, I have never even heard of this line. I might order this for Valentines day 🙂

The only place I see it online, is directly from the Lostmarc’h site – have you purchased it recently? It looks like shipping is only $5 but that seems too good to be true.

Continuing the Basenotes Chanuary project with vintage No. 19, which also dovetails neatly with my goal for this week to wear palate-cleansing non-sweet scents, especially greens and chypres, which I often neglect. Thinking of Chamade for tomorrow.

I was going to do a week of ambers, but the sun is shining and it has already warmed to 30+ degrees here- which feels downright balmy compared to last week’s temps- so Eau des Merveilles felt like the right choice for today.

Hello, good morning, happy days, and all of the best things to you, NST. I’m in a good mood, having had two decent night’s sleep in a row, and the happy observation that although we’re halving Eric’s meds now, his tummy seems to be behaving in the way a tummy should. He’s not growing fast, but he seems well, and I keep telling myself that after all, his mother is a tiny cat, all legs and ears. We will take him to our vet on Sunday for a big check up, and I really hope for good news.

I’m wearing 1270 today, which I think is very kind of me, considering that it work is just work. The aircon is so cold that this heavier perfume isn’t a problem inside, and even though it’s very hot (25–26 degrees), there’s quite a strong cool breeze round every corner, so the perfume doesn’t get a chance to congeal and turn cloying. Unless there was a week when the project was “Choose something randomly and hope for the best”, I’m not fitting in with the project, but I’m happy with my choices, which is the main thing, I suppose.

In kitten news, we’re having to operate an elaborate system of wedges in our wardrobe doors to keep our little mountaineers out. The attraction of the very top shelves is powerful to the kitten mind, but the mess they make when they surf down works equally powerfully in mine. Plus, you cannot imagine the damage a 4.5kg kitten can do to a leather jacket just by using it as a handy route to top shelf heaven ????. I really liked that jacket!

Well, I should take my fragrant self office-wards, though I feel a strong reluctance. I’d rather go out and play. Be well, all.

I was inspired by others to yesterday to keep plowing through samples and so today’s (well this morning’s at least) SOTD is the newest version of Miss Dior–the 2017 edp. I don’t hate it or love it. If someone gave me a bottle, I would wear it. I am probably violating some inviolable perfumista law here, but to me it could be a Chanel–it reminds me of No. 19 Poudre or Misia in its style.

I will have some strong words for Friday – the 1-star that I’m planning to wear is one of the scents I consider near perfection. Oh well, I guess perfume is a subjective art just like all the others!

Scent of the afternoon = Bergamote 22

I liked it on paper, bravely spritzed my arm, then spritzed more on 5 minutes later. The bergamot top note is happy and refreshing, the rest is rather quiet so far. This is Le Labo’s slightly musky eau de Cologne.

Thanks, Robin. I love the citrus in Bergamote 22, but the musk annoyed my nose, had to scrub it. I was reminded that the musky cologne Eau de Rochas did the same, and was much stronger though less costly. These two could be Paris/NYC cousins. Oh, well. More for someone else.

You did wear that one quite a bit. I wonder if rolling on is more efficient than spraying?

Velvety patch, a dusting of dark cocoa and tuberose. It reminds me of a less sweet version of Coromandel. I liked the rollerball as the scent stayed closer to my skin, although I could smell it all day. It had really great longevity for a natural. Charna sells 5 ml rollerball in really cute packaging. It was a cuddlefluff scent for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll probably buy another one next fall.

That sounds really nice! The Rose Boheme also lasts pretty well, too.

I am doing the Forgotten Friend project all week. Yesterday it was DSH Twelfth Night, and today it is Attrape-Coeur. As lovely as it is, it is difficult to wear in hot weather, which is most of the year on the Gulf Coast, and I often forget to wear it during out too-brief winters. Tomorrow I plan to wear Vega. I haven’t decided yet on the rest of the week.

I have been starting to go through my perfume decants and samples and have realized that I had things I had completely forgotten buying. One of my plans (NOT resolutions) for 2018 is to get a handle on my perfume. I plan to make an inventory of all my full bottles and decants-so I know what I actually have-and make a real effort to work through my samples and take notes on them.

I have been promising myself to do that for years. If you do it, nag me to do it too!

How is that one? I ordered a sample of Rosenlust with my last Luckyscent order, but have been curious about this one, too.

It’s an herbal (similar to rose geranium) rose and iris on me – it starts green and ends a little powdery, which I really enjoy.
It’s a quiet perfume, which doesn’t project much but it lasts about five/six hours total on my skin. 🙂

SOTD was sample of new TF vanilla Fatale. It’s a bit cloying. I think I’ll stick with Tabacco Vanille.

SOTD = Chanel 8 spray La Pausa EDT

I am doing a week of Chanel. Thanks to cazaubon for the Chanuary idea!

BUSY at work and I’ve joined the ranks of the sick – body ache, dodgy stomach, BLAH!

That tote looks cute but nearly £71 is way too expensive!

Chanel week! I hope that you feel better. I’ve had similar symptoms and am pretty sure that I have a sinus infection.
