Friday scent of the day 12/15

Posted by Robin on 15 December 2017 269 Comments

Happy Wild Kingdom Friday! (It's also Bill of Rights Day, Cupcake Day and International Tea Day.) Our community project for today: wear a perfume with an animal in its name. If you don't have one, match your perfume to an animal and tell us about it. Thanks to Elisa for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm wearing LesNez Turtle Vetiver Front. (I think I am, anyway. The sample is badly labeled and it could be another of the LesNez Turtles.)

Reminder: 12/22 will be 'Tis The Season Friday...wear the perfect fragrance to celebrate, share joy and look forward to a new year. Suggested by happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017 or Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Niiiiice SOTD! As a vetiver addict, I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to try any of the vetiver exercises from Les Nez.

I don’t have any animal named fragrance, so I went with something that reminds me of a horse: Cuir Cannage by Dior. Love it…butch leather with flowers!

They were all good vetivers! I don’t know what happened to LesNez, wish they made more fragrances.

Twins with the Jungle. I used the tiniest spritz as this one for me is usually relegated to night- it’s such a beast. But my absolute favorite beast!

Twins! I rarely wear this one because the vanilla note is often the note most prominent on my skin. For some reason today it is the warm spices, cloves and cardamom that are most prominent. However, I way over applied, because I forgot what a sillage monster this is.

Usually, I do not get much vanilla, just the spices. Cardamon is always the prominent note on me. I can over apply if I am at home alone and I really enjoy it when I do it! 😀

Wearing La Myrrhe from my 50th birthday Bell Jar.
This scent reminds me strongly of a tortie cat – classy and sleek at first glance, then more earthy and abandoned as the day goes on.

    Happy Friday !!

I have been coveting this, alas SL does not seem to have any sampling programme at all, and now they even scrap the entire 50 ml bottles. The new 100 ml bottles are like 200+ and the shipping fees another 37+ Oh boy..

La Myrrhe also comes in a Bell Jar only.
Most of the sampling companies do offer it though, so you could likely find a decant.

after yesterdays discussion of Alahiiiiine I am in Alahiiiine today
No animal springs to mind, but maybe a large cat with beautiful green eyes strolling around beautiful Moroccan Palaces

In the WSJ this morning there is a eye opening article about Vanilla, and how our taste for fancy vanilla is causing lots of havoc for farmers in Madagascar. So much so, some have to actually sleep with the orchids for fear of being robbed. Crazy! Also explains the whole harvest procedure in the article if anyone is interested.

Interesting, thanks for posting! I like these and like that they capture something of the old bottles… but what I love most is learning, through the comments, that the French for packaging is “les packagings”!

I have a tab open on that story right now! Dang, check it:

“On at least four occasions this year, farmers have killed thieves caught stealing vanilla from farms or houses, according to a local government official in Madagascar’s vanilla-growing region of Sava.”

I get coffee and vanilla from Panama (where my family is from) and just that small amount takes incredible effort to harvest. And he people who do the work are not rich! 🙁

SOTD: Peau de Bête layered with Égoïste. It reminds me of horses and powdery sweet hay, and now with a plummy rose and geranium. A strange beast.

It feels like aeons since I last tuned in for the SOTD. Hello, everyone!

SOTD Histoires de Parfums Tubéreuse 3 L’Animale. I don’t usually wear it to work but I’ve been loving it. Cheering for exhausted pre-Christmas December.

Could also have done Antilope or several Zoologist samples but I don’t much like any of them. My Antilope is a mini from one of those Meilleurs Parfums sets so may be a bit tired.

I don’t have anything that resembles an animal name in my collection. I am getting some odds and ends for Christmas today and helping a friend do his Christmas shopping today. Heaven help me at the mall. So I am going to skank them out with vintage Bal.

I can’t seem to find anything in my collection that fits today’s theme, so I went with my old friend, Gucci EDP. And I will refrain from mentioning that the cumin note in it might remind some of an animal of sorts (it’s not like that at all on me). 🙂

I’m surprised to see how many fragrances I have with animal names! As I’m away from home, however, my choices were limited, yet easy, as I packed one of my favorites, DSH Chinchilla. While wearing actual fur horrifies me, I definitely get the ‘feel’ of soft, sleek, slightly sweet and musky fur from this one. It’s the perfect gateway animalic, great for newbies to the genre, for a more ‘polite’ animalic in the workplace, and for cold, blustery days when you crave something soft and cozy.

Lots of present wrapping today plus, I’m going to give biscotti making a try as this will be my edible gift to those special friends. Wish me luck as I’ve read the dough is a bear to work with. Going for chocolate + chocolate-chip biscotti. Perfume to match!

Well, I had a couple of animal choices and was going to go with Demeter Kitten Fur, but it just wasn’t doing it for me this morning. So I decided to go rogue and wear Fat Electrician, and feeling pretty fab about it! 🙂

According to the ad copy at ELdO…. https://nstperfume.com/2009/06/22/etat-libre-dorange-fat-electrician-new-fragrance/, the Fat Electrician was an animal back in his younger days, so that’s my angle. LOL! #HalfCredit ? #HalfArseJustLikeFatElectricianPhotoInLink 🙂

(Alas, that may sound more impressive than is actually warranted: the Tigress is cologne concentration — oh, to have the parfum! — and smells like a tiny purring kitten, while the lippie is a very light warm red — not a bold, vampy Bordeaux!)

On theme with my sotd Dark horse, by Dame

I had a hellish week. My mother ended up in the ICU…arghh (peritoneal inflammation, she fainted in hospital after an MRI scan. I think the fact she was already in hospital saved her).
She is still in ICU, but thankfully improving. It was a close call.

And Id like to share my
‘Perfume related emotional rollercoaster moment’ of the week.
I stayed with my dad for support, and then i saw on her vanity the Ineke sample set I gave her for Mothers day. She really is trying them all and marking them (i think she has marks for likes and loves). When she gets home I think I am going to get her a bottle of her favourite one, or the other Ineke sample set.

SotD = Dame Perfumery Dark Horse + Fendi Theorema

Dark Horse and Theorema smell extra nice on this cold morning.

When I swiped on Dark Horse from a sample vial then sniffed my wrist I instantly thought of Theorema, so I had to wear that one too. The cinnamon in both smells nice together.

I often wonder about the meaning of perfume names. I asked google to translate “Theorema” from Latin to English and got “austrozephyrus,” a genus of Indomalayan butterflies. I googled again and learned that theorema is a genus of butterflies from South America. Butterflies bonus points for anyone wearing either of these today. 🙂

Heck yeah International Tea Day! Mine was a cup of vanilla almond black tea. Yum.

SOTD is House of Matriarch Orca. This one was love at first sniff. It’s a smooth, spicy ambergris on a gorgeous frankincense base. Even the travel size bottles are pricey, but luckily a little goes a long way, so I can make my two samples last a long time.

My university is having a fancy holiday party for staff this afternoon. I wasn’t able to go last year, but I’m told there is tons of good, free food and even an open bar (!) Should be a fun way to wind down my Friday afternoon.

Morning, all. The kittens woke me about an hour ago, demanding sustenance and strokes. It’s not quite 5.30 and I really did not intend to start the first day of my holiday quite this early. But, kittens…they’re fed, and now in full riot. Alexander quite literally bounced off the wall a minute ago—raced through the apartment, ran out of floor, leapt up and sort of sideways so he could use the wall to launch himself back in the opposite direction. He’s now brought me his favourite blankie, a tartan monstrosity that he tows around after him, fights and kills (those blankies can be very fierce, you know), and sleeps on when he gets tired. It would be the end of the world Chez Waterdragon if we somehow ever lost it.

Me? Well, I’m a bit bleary, but I’ve showered and scented myself with 1270, because it’s gorgeous and this will be a day of heavy housework. I find a perverse pleasure in wearing my more glamorous perfumes for unglamorous tasks like scrubbing the tiles or polishing the furniture. If I extend the trend, I’ll put on my best LBD to bake in, or something equally mad. But really, why not? Maybe it could be a case of “The better the dress, the better the deed”? But now I’ve just being silly. I clearly need some breakfast, and I think I will go and address that very issue. Be well, all.

Was going to go with Absolue Pour Le Soir, which smells like fur to me, but at the last minute decided to go with Fille de Berlin, my winter rose. It reminds me of my winter holiday in Quebec City, and will scent my Christkindl market trip today. If I had to match an animal with it, it would be Sara, the persian kitty waiting for her forever home at PAWS Chicago.

I’m one of the many wearing Civet. I had only sampled it very lightly once before, so this is my first time really wearing it using multiple sprays from a fresh decant. Mmm it’s really cozy yet intriguing. It may be my favorite use of a coffee note that I’ve smelled in a while. Civet has quite the note list, but I think it’s very well blended and balanced.

I tried La Panthere Legere yesterday and thought it was nice in this sunny warm weather. Alex was in surgery yesterday from 2-7pm so I had time on my hands. I haven’t seen his surgeon yet but guessing from the bloody head of the femur that is now in my hotel mini bar that surgery went well. The last thing I took home from a hospital was a newborn baby… which seemed sensible at the time. The ball of a hip… Not so sure. Maybe a Christmas present for the dogs? Wearing Hywl now from a sample. Feeling manly.

For some of us in A-NZ, it is important that the whole body is returned to the earth, so placenta, amputations, extractions (love that expression) and the results of —ectomy operations are collected and treated with due ceremony. It’s an option for patients under cultural safety. I was offered my gallstones as a matter of course. I didn’t want them, because I thought of them as a by-product rather than a part, but the surgeon said they were rather pretty.

        AAAAAACCCCCKKKKK!!!!!

That said, I don’t know if Kanuka’s husband wanted his femur for cultural reasons, academic interest, or simply personal enquiry. Or all three. Or something else entirely.

By the way, I should make clear that I’m not saying ack! to the idea of honouring the whole body. I hit return accidentally and didn’t realise, and it gives rather the wrong impression. I meant to show that I was kinda revolted by the comment on the aesthetics of the beastly nuisance that were my gallstones. Also was grumpy with my husband, who thought I should have collected them. I told him that if he wanted gallstones, he should get some of his own…I seem to recall that the conversation went rapidly downhill from there.

Interesting custom. Are you going to bury it now, or save it until he is deceased and bury the whole lot together? The only thing I’ve ever gotten back were teeth, and only as a child. I remember waking up delirious after wisdom teeth extraction in my 20’s and being told no very firmly when I asked for the teeth. This was in Canada, and I remember asking in both English and French, in case the nurse had not properly understood my request. 🙂

In any event, wishing your Alex a speedy and complete healing!

Dear NSTers, I miss you all! I’m still slowly dying; my cold has turned into a congestive and consumptive cough that pulls up blood and keeps both me and my beloved awake all night. Did you know that a woman dying of “consumption” is basically code for “a woman of loose morals dying for the sin of not being a virgin” in opera? I learned this only recently. (Think about everyone who dies of consumption in every opera you’ve seen! Is she the virgin? Nope.)

Anyway, I am wearing perfume in my mind. I am wearing Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant in my mind. In reality, I’m going commando, because putting on perfume would either be wasted because of my congested nose or result in nausea because of sickness/lack of sleep. On the upside, today is my last day of work in 2017. It doesn’t come a day too soon.

I hope you all are doing wonderfully and keeping warm! Robin, that turtle is adorable.

Most of the blood is caught in a mucus matrix, though, so I’m not too concerned. Right? That seems not so bad, right? There isn’t like free-flowing blood.

If it’s from your chest and not from your sinuses, you should have it checked out. A cold or even bronchitis usually doesn’t have any visible blood (microscopic, probably). Hopefully you’re fine, but better to have it checked than not. Yes, we’re here to worry on your behalf ????

See above–it’s blood caught in mucus (so like, that awful gross yellow stuff you hack up during a cold is bright red instead), which is much less frightening to me than liquid blood. So I think I can delay medical attention, right?

    Wooooo! Happy Friday, NST!

Quite late to post, but for today’s project I’m in PdE Equistrius (named after the perfumer’s horse). Best I could do. If I hadn’t remembered it as an option I was going to have to resort to a homophone and wear Chypre Mousse. ????

Checking my collection for Friday project options would be a lot easier if I hadn’t made a teensy mistake a few weeks back when I got a new phone. Long story short, I didn’t get the whole thing backed up, and one of the few things I lost was my perfume spreadsheet. D’oh! ????????‍♀️

    Civet.

I will never try Kopi Luwak coffee because I know how badly those civets are treated. They are kept in cages for years and made to eat nothing but coffee, which isn’t supposed to be the main ingredient in their diet. They suffer from malnurishment. They get dangerously sick. It is frightening that a luxury product comes out of it…

Sorry for being negative. I was just shocked when I found out.

I’m talking about overpriced coffee that is made by making real civets eat coffee fruits. Not about the perfume ingredient. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak

I hope civet in perfumes is synthetic.
