Friday scent of the day 12/8

Posted by Robin on 8 December 2017 209 Comments

Happy Patchouli Friday, plus happy Brownie Day! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with patchouli, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Mugler Angel Muse, and I do smell delicious. If I had a brownie on hand for breakfast, all would be perfect.

Reminder: 12/15 will be Wild Kingdom Friday...wear a perfume with an animal in its name. If you don't have one, match your perfume to an animal and tell us about it. Suggested by Elisa.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Mugler round crossbody bag was from Summer 2017 (originally a little over $1,000) and appears to be sold out.

I’m wearing Coze, a very delicious spicy (as in capsicum), chocolaty patchouli. Also wondering how this would layer with Angel….

Angel would eat it alive, I would have thought? but maybe with a light enough application it would work.

Yeah I’m wondering if, like, a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of Coze to Angel might produce “Spicy Angel”

Right there with you and Robin in Angel Muse.

Got home from root canal last night and promptly rewarded myself with a chocolate milkshake for dinner. Still achey this morning, but hoping everything will be back to normal soon. (Other than feeling like I’m coming down with a cold…how much more can I whine??)

A sore throat is bothering me since this morning. I hope a cold is not on the way. The weather is not helping at all. Snow for tomorrow and it will very cold next week. We will survive! At least, we smell wonderful!

It took a couple of days for the achey-ness to settle down after my root canal, LizzieB. Sounds like you are already doing the right things, especially with that chocolate milkshake.

I am sure there must be patchouli as a small part in several things on my shelves, but if it is strong enough for me to notice I don’t buy it. So, it is volutes edp for me today as it is crispy cold for us today and volutes is a good cold weather scent.

    SOTD: Miss Dior Le Parfum.
Miss Dior has so many children (and they are constantly getting “facelifts”) it’s impossible to know them anymore!
I will stick to MD Original and Le Parfum which I think are the only good ones from that line.

Besides Least Healthy, we also won Best Homemade and Best Store-bought. I’m in SSS Equestrian again because I enjoyed it so much yesterday. It’s delightful and different.

Love the travel spray size and packaging! Can see myself reordering this size again and again for the sheer portability and compactness of the atomizer. Wish other perfumers would hop on the bandwagon!

Oh, wow — Magie Noire was the first grown-up perfume I owned, I think — late in high school. The last time I tested it, maybe ten years ago (late high school was, um, 30 years ago), it made me sneeze. A lot. Same thing with Calyx, another favorite I think I can no longer wear. ANYWAY, my relevant point being that I didn’t realize MN had patchouli, and since I *do* know that patch doesn’t usually work for me, I wonder if its presence may have triggered my recent MN problems. But it is a lovely, lovely fragrance, and I am so glad Incould wear it for a little while.

        Skalolazka,
MN has a very distinct scent memory for me. The woman who introduced me to the perfume was a Lancome SA who was also a family friend. She was this very elegant woman of Egyptian and Greek background, statuesque, with magnificent blonde hair and high cheekbones (think a blonde Sophia Lauren) who was well-groomed.

When I started working at Maas Brothers (FL department store, circa 1980’s), she took me under her wing, gave me a makeover, showed me how to groom my brows and nails. She always wanted me to do and look my very best.

Wearing VC&A Moonlight Patchouli, mixed with the dregs of last night’s FM Une Rose. I was going to wear AP Iris Celadon, but I needed something lighter to balance the rose 🙂

    Drinking:

SsotD = Romanza and L’air du desert marocain

I smell like a perfume shop in the best way possible.

Have to laugh because sources are not in agreement as to the inclusion of patchouli in either of these scents. Patchouli is perhaps everywhere, and nowhere?

Seriously people, I adore Romanza, but L’air du desert marocain is blowing my mind in the best possible way this morning. Why didn’t somebody tell meeeee!?!?!? oh, I guess you probably did. 🙂

I’m surprised and pleased at how well Romanza and L’AdDM go together. They have similar presence, though the Tauer scent certainly wins at longevity. I put on a dab this morning and it is still going strong 8 hours later. It is SO beautiful. The tiny mini bottle might be my favorite blind buy ever.

Cousins with several of you in the original Angel. I noticed that Ulta had a Xmas gift set that included minis of Angel, Alien, and Angel Muse the other day and was sorely tempted. I also finally tested a few Chanels: Coco Mademoiselle was a no but No 5 L’Eau was a yes. My non-perfume-wearing friend also tested a few and fell in love with the original Coco, but I was not able to convince her to buy it. Revoke my enabler card!

I’ve just discovered that the small bottle of patouchli oil I bought the other day at the Invercargill tattoo parlour/ jewellery shop has smashed inside my favourite leather bag, causing a big dark patouchli stain on the leather…it does smell good, just sweet and grassy. Reminds me of when my pen used to leak in my pocket at school. Did anyone watch that CH christmas video and notice that after opening empty boxes (Merry Christmas darling…I bought you a red cardboard box) the woman sprayed perfume on her dinner plate ( Latest weight loss craze…The Perfume Diet). Anyway, it’s still too hot here. The birds are going crazy singing up the sun , sheep baaaaing in the distance, dogs snoring, family fast asleep. Tacit just now but will sniff my bag once more ..

Ha! Thanks for the giggle. How do you like Tacit? I got a couple of the sample wipes but ended up sending them to my brother who’s an Aesop fan. I think he said he found Tacit too feminine and I think I said I thought he was crazy ???? (he’s VERY concerned about whether things smell masc or fem).

I think Tacit is good for when you feel just a little wilted by the heat and want to feel a but fresher but can’t be bothered with a ‘proper’ cologne or perfume. It is great after a day spent grubbing about in the garden or a long walk …like for those times you go and sit outside on the deck to enjoy the first glass of wine in the evening. It would be a good long haul flight perfume. It’s quite aromatic/ unisex and natural smelling. I think Calypso might have it. I liked the earlier Mystra more and I’m interested to try Hywl. I wouldn’t describe it as feminine . I would buy it as a gift for a gardener who like the smell of the outdoors but doesn’t necessarily like perfume as it wouldn’t freak them out.

I also was given those wipes of hwyl. It didn’t do anything for me. It’s their least natural smelling one it seems, and has that screechy woody amber I don’t like. It seemed a bit non-descript to me. My favorite is still Marrakech (?).

    Hello all!

    1) Crisp, windy and COLD nights here in Portland. Have been enjoying the night markets so far and drinking lots of hot tea and mulled wine.

    2) SOTD: Showered in Blue Skies and am wearing a bit of Coromandel. I have a sample of White Patchouli and almost wore that- but am saving that for a holiday party.

    3) Already my sweaters are taking on that ‘winter sweater smell’ – a melange of scented creams and perfumes. I have to figure out how to bottle it!

Wearing 1889 Moulin Rouge for Victorian Christmas dress up day at Kent life museum, with my children’s school.
I wore a long chiffon red and beige paisley dress with a mulberry high necked frilled cotton blouse over the top, and a vintage black velvet, (circa 1940’s) jacket with cinched waist, and big chignon finished off with velvet floral vintage hairpiece. It was such fun, the children took part in various Christmassy workshops. There was an actor playing Charles Dickens who was amazing, he did a scratch Christmas carol with some of the kids, and was so funny and charismatic, the scullery maid ‘Agatha’ was gr8 too, leading the children in Victorian parlour games, that servants would have played at Christmas.

I’m wearing Stash today, someone mentioned it this week and I like it so much.

I was taken aside last night at chorus rehearsal and accused of “being scented.” I never wear scent to rehearsal, but I suspect that I was wafting a touch of Ede’s “winter sweater smell” on my jacket cuffs. I think that everything I own is probably impregnated with scent despite being laundered, so Ms Sensitive Nose will just have to avoid me.

I’ve failed on the patch project today (currently sampling JHAG White Spirit, which is a pleasant clean jasmine on me; don’t think I need to buy this one though). I did wear a couple of patch scents earlier this week though (Coromandel, Heeley Hippie Rose) so I suppose I get half credit.

Got a question for y’all though: has anyone seen/tried the Chanel purse sprays? Do they have a cap of some sort? From the photos on the website it looks like they don’t, so the spray could depress itself inside one’s purse, which would not be great.

The Eau Premiere purse spray is fab–you just twist it clockwise to access the atomizer, and twist it counter clockwise to depress the atomizer. Think it’d be ok in a purse, but mine doesn’t go there, as I’m sure the enamel case would get scratched up. I like to travel w manufacturer samples, because I don’t care if anything happens to them.

This would be a gift for MIL, who is unaware of the existence of samples 🙂

Is yours the current version of the purse spray? There are questions on the Chanel website asking if the purse spray is the ‘twist and spray’ style, and the response from Chanel is ‘no’.

I’ve an older version–doesn’t quite look like the current model (it’s indeed twist & spray.) Mind you, it’s rather large for travel or purse–4″ tall x 1″ wide.
Now I’m curious to see the new iteration in person.

I found a youtube from June 2017 that sure looks like twist & spray. I’m thinking the purse spray would be a good gift since we all have to slog to the nephew/grandson’s “destination wedding” in March, and MIL marinates in No 5 every day. But only if the purse spray actually travels well… Arg. Gift-giving dilemma.

Maybe go with the parfum purse spray, then? Bet it’s smaller than the edt case, and only $20 more. Much as I like it, sorry your MIl marinates herself–hope you’ll be a few seats away from her at the wedding.

I like No 5 myself, but simply can’t wear it since it is so “her”.

I haven’t done the research I planned into what I might have with patchouli. It’s not one of my favourite notes, so I don’t have anything that helpfully has patchouli in the name. I did see Smokeytoes mention Noir de Noir, so I’m doing the Saturday morning housework in a luxurious cloud.

Borneo 1834. Very nice, more chocolate than I remembered. This is from an old bottle, don’t know what it smells like now.

Today I’ve very much enjoyed reading all the comments because patchouli is a note I love. Happy to see many mentions of Coromandel and Borneo 1834, both marvellous scents. I am also making note of several others people recommend that I’ve not tried. My own SOTD is the patchouli I consider the best of my acquaintance, CDG Luxe Patchouli. MY MY MY. It is dry, tarry, “dirty”, with no hints of sweet (no benzoin, chocolate, or vanilla–also no sourness). I find it by far the most alluring and just plain gorgeous to wear–the kind that makes your eyes roll to the back of your head. Just was looking up the notes and I saw it has fenugreek (the scent of which I think I sort of know–isn’t it kind of maple-y?) and bearberry–what on earth is that? Like others in Houston, I woke up and pulled open the blinds today and was astonished to see some SNOW sprinkled on the tops of bushes, cars, and along tree limbs. So pretty! I swear at least 25 people in my Facebook feed have featured their snow pictures today (I did too), including a few from our university campus showing the kids making snow angels and a miniature snowman out of the scant 1/4 inch that was on the top of the grass. So funny to me (as a Michigan native)!–but for many younger kids now it’s their first time to see snow ever and they’re all excited.

Luxe Patchoui is really nice. Yes, fenugreek smells like maple syrup. I used to take it as an herbal supplement and my pits smelled like maple syrup!!

Today I’m wearing Lalique Entre Noire, does it have patchouli? Could be!

But I wanted to ask you guys about my favourite patchouli fragrance, because I’ve only found it once, very cheap at TK Maxx ages ago … and I wonder if anyone has come across it:

YSL Rive Gauche pour Homme Intense. It seems that it wasn’t in production for long. My bottle is half empty… I came in a handsome brown plastic version of the black-and-silver striped, cylindric metal atomiser (which is unfortunately not in use anymore).

The classic EdT from 2003 is a suave, slightly formal fougère. I find it staggeringly beautiful, with its airy structure and the shimmering geranium-lavender-patchouli accord, which was a novelty to my nose when I fist smelled it. Very unusual, dry as champagne and flowery for a men’s fragrance (I always thought I smell jasmin, but that note isn’t even listed…). However, while I love to smell it, it’s not 100% me, if you know what I mean. Generally, I am not a great fougère fan… Then there was the perfume version called „Intense“, which I bought spontaneously. It’s a completely different beast, with a very naturally feeling, glowing patchouli note taking center stage. If the EdT is a clear soprano fougère, the EdP Intense is a wonderfully warm balsamic woody alto. In the EdT, the patchouli adds body to the aromatics, in the Intense the relationship seems to be reversed. It’s slightly sweeter, too, though by no means veering into gourmand territory.

Why do I always seem to fall in love with discontinued scents…?

    SOTD is Tiziana Terenzi “Ursa”.

    Top: nutmeg, elemi, dried fruits and rum;
    Mid: patchouli, olibanum, incense, tobacco and vetiver;
    Base: vanilla, leather and oud.

So, you know how the cliche about patchouli is it’s used to cover over bad body smells? This perfume comes at it from the other direction, and coats the patchouli with a covering of smelly animalics. Not as bad as I make it sound, but I haven’t fallen in love with it.

    Yesterday was Profumum Roma “Patchouly”.

Notes are sandalwood, amber, patchouli and incense. Probably my favourite (or ‘least unfavourite’) patchouli of the week. But overall I think my generous Christmas gift to my lovely NST friends will be the entire world’s supply of patchouli-forward perfumes, forever. Enjoy! ;^D

Parfum des Merveilles (I beleive it has lots of patchouly)

I saw “Rebel in the Rye” today. It’s a very emotional and powerful movie.

Feel the need to by every Salinger’s story and read it in original.

Aedes de Venustas Pélargonium which smells like Déclaration to me. It’s nice, but does not feel necessary.

I don’t have Déclaration, plus I loved the red bottle, so I bought it. 🙂 I am a sucker for those Aedes bottles.

I can fully see that, although as I don’t display my bottles it’s a bit pointless in my case. I had hoped for more geranium, but other than that it’s perfectly nice.

Scent twin with several people today in Coromandel EdT, courtesy of Hajusuuri and the decant stash. It’s going great with the chilly weather today. No snow here yet, but I was really surprised to see the pictures from Texas on the news! Some of those folks got serious snow… like 7 inches! ????

Hey, Happy Friday! How are y’all?? For today’s project I’m in the glorious 31RC.

Guys, I’m a mess today. I caught a bit of crud and had a PND scratchy throat Tuesday and Wednesday. I salt-water gargled several times both days and fixed it right up. I was feeling great yesterday! But—wham—today I’ve suddenly got the whole watery-eyes-sneezing-my head-off thing. Rats. ????????

I hope you’re all doing well! I’m off to read your patchouli-scented choices now…

Sorry I didn’t get back in here ’til now, but in answer to Schaf’s question (and for anyone else wondering), I did get my sample of Warszawa from an online retailer (not sure if I can mention the name, but it starts with an “L”).
