Wednesday scent of the day 10/18

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2017 229 Comments

Happy Hump Day, and happy National Chocolate Cupcake Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I seem to be doing an iris week. Today, Prada Infusion d'Iris Absolue, because Elisa P mentioned it yesterday. To reek just a tiny little bit of havoc, I've put a bit of Prada Candy on my other arm.

Reminder: 10/20 will be Reeking Havoc Friday...in honor of Holly (who is frequently reeking havoc), wear as many perfume samples at once as you can stand. Suggested by FearsMice.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the the "unveiling of Prada Rong Zhai, a meticulously restored historic early 20th-century mansion in central Shanghai", which you can read more about at the Prada website.

    Bonjour
Am traveling again and have samples only packed.
Dropped my sample of vetiver tonka on bathroom floor yesterday morning smashing that.
Have a travel spray of Ambre Narguile
It’s hot hot here so one light spray will do.
    Cupcakes! Chocolate! Yay!

In 10 Corso Como. I needed something peaceful, meditative and relaxing to face an early start and long and stressful day.

My hubby flew early this morning to LA for a 10 day bussiness trip, so I will be able to spray lavishly on perfumes at night and the weekend. And the best : No cooking dinner! 😀

I never cook when my significant other is out of town either! Which is crazy, it’s not like he expects me to when he is here! I do like to cook for us so we have healthy, good meals and I guess it’s nice to just take a break when it is just me. And I always spray more lavishly when he’s gone too. Enjoy!

My husband and I spent a year in different cities recently and both of us REGULARLY had super easy snack/microwave dinners, yet now that we live together again every night is like What Elaborate Meal Shall We Eat?

Exactly! It’s so funny…I think it’s a social thing for us also. Like it’s more social to sit down and eat a nice meal for some reason than a bowl of cereal or microwave dinner haha.

It’s a lot of work & effort for 1 person, plus it’s not necessarily economical. That said, when I lived alone in a studio apt I regularly cooked really nice meals for myself. But I also ordered out enough that my neighborhood Indian delivery spot stopped asking for my order and just said, “the usual?” 😉

I’m wearing Memo Paris Luxor Oud for the first time, from a sample. The oud is very faint – I wish they would have bumped it up a little, but the deep, dark amber and rose, and the tangy citrus peel is pretty great anyway.

Not wreaking havoc by wearing a couple sprays of Crystalle EDT. I much prefer it now that it’s cooler.

Thank you to the person who mentioned here that she finds that it works better in cold weather!

Drinking silver needle tea. I am not a tea connoisseur but had to get some loose leaves because they are so beautiful 🙂

Wearing some Hove Louis Quatorze solid perfume which I picked up on my honeymoon to New Orleans! And I didn’t get a chance to tell you all but I wore vintage Ivoire to the ceremony. My friends were like “do you know what perfume you’re wearing?” and I was like “darlings I’ve known since long before I knew what dress I’d wear!”

It’s our 20th Anniversary today, and I’m sitting here trying to decide between Cuir de Lancôme and Le Temps d’Une Fête. The former is so gorgeous on this cool day and the latter is something I’ve worn since before we were married…it was my signature for quite a long time. I likely wore it on my wedding day (that day remains a bit of a blur, although oddly enough I remember my exact lipstick.) Kind of a win-win for me here scentwise….

We are taking the day to see The Princess Bride in the theater this afternoon. My husband has never seen it. Unsure about dinner. I want to go to one of our regular places. Having a hankering for my Curry Mee bowl at our favorite Malaysian place. Either that or feel young at our local red banquette place that’s been around forever and whose owner is a lovely 89 year old Irishman.

I don’t mind it at all! I think for what it is it’s well done. On me it’s a simple linear iris and clean musk skin scent. Which seems clear that that was the goal. AND what I appreciate the most is the reasonable price.

Today I have a day off from work, perfect for ‘reeking havoc’.

This morning i started out in:
    Eau du ceil
    Eau du fier
    Heure Exquise
(By Annick Goutal, samples from the swapmeet, thank you, Austenfan)

After lunch, i had a shower and chose Dilettante by Hiram Green (from the affordable travelspray)
And some Body Shop Moringa oil in my hair.
(On a side note: my hair ends are somewhat dry and Oils really work better than the fancy expensive Balmain stuff i tried a while ago).

Ran some errands and last but not least went to the post office to pick up another swapmeet package full of samples from another generous NSTer. Thank you so much!

So now i am wearing 31 Rue Cambon on my left arm and Beige on my right arm. And I may end up wearing a few more… 🙂

Decided to round the afternoon off with vintage Coco edt. Now that is not how i remember the current version. Vintage is much more smooth.

Also, I am wearing my ‘couch costume’ now, a hoodie that reeks of Dame’s Black horse (from yesterday evening test session) and a t-shirt that still wafts Narcisse (wore that one on monday).

I think ‘reeking havoc’ is accomplished 😀

And it was really fun to do, its nice to compare them all and be amazed about all the wonderful differences and similarities between fragrances.
Though if I really want to check if a fragrance is a personal like or love or maybe fb worthy..i’d need to wear only that fragrance 🙂

Is it me, or do 31 Rue cambon and Heure exquise share the same powdery French vibe?

31 RC is more about crystal chandeliers, silver spoons and a crisp white blouse. Heure Exq reminds me more of a cosy bistro garden and a kneelength flowerdress.

How do you like the Eau de Ciel? do you have the vintage or current reformulation? it was d/c for a while but then brought back..that is one of my all time favorite lindens.

It is vintage formulation. It was a first sniff and I really like it! Beautiful linden it is, though Eau de Fier came on stronger and pushed it to the back seat
haha. So it needs a proper stand-alone-wear soon, for me to get a better sniff of it.

Our whole street contains two long rows of linden trees. I always look forward to their blossoms…what a feast to arrive back home and smell them!

SOTD is FM Petite Matin. I have been thinking about wearing this for days but the rains have spawned a lot of mold and my allergies are back. Unfortunately, today this is lemony with a horrible screechy background. I’m trying to figure out if it’s my sore nose, remains of whatever I wore last night or just bad body chemistry today.

I’ve been having sinus issues of late and similar problems. It’s not that I can’t smell, it’s that some notes are massively amplified, so everything smells “off.” Hope you feel better soon.

Testing the Phlur sample set. Moab started spicy, then smelled like cleaning supplies, and is now a warm cinnamon. Oldmstead & Vaux was bright and green, but is now a creamy ginger. Hanami is ambery and woody. I haven’t yet come to a conclusion on them – may require more reeking!

ha! I love reading others take on the Phlur line! Moab was straight up sweet cinnamon and vanilla with a twinge of peppermint to my wonky nose and reminds me a lot of Tauer’s work. Olmstead and Vaux I could barely smell but every time I wore it I got compliments…Hanami is fig and hazelnut…similar to Angel Muse without the vetiver.

    Sampling Vilhelm’s Room Service today.
Greta Garbo is said to be the inspiration for this scent.
Ironically, my gramma is the daughter of Swedish immigrants and when I was really little and would put on her dark sunglasses, she would tell me “you look just like Greta Garbo!”
I had no idea who she was, but I knew that looking like her must be a good thing.????

I like Morning Chess. I am a bergamot lover so I figured I would. I don’t get much patch and I would say it veers masculine- it wears like a really good man’s cologne on me.
So far my favs are Modest Mimosa- which surprises me because I am not a floral girl, but it is so pretty- and Dear Polly (the one scent I was really dying to try).

Well, I decided to explore some of the Serge Lutens, since autumn weather and foliage scented air seem to be perfect for his style.
They carry a couple of SL perfumes in the nearest perfume shop anyway.

    I went with Chergui today.
    I immediately liked it.
It is sweet, warm, pleasantly spicy and falls into woody orientals category which is my favorite.
I detect burnt sugar, minty turkish delight (its sugar powder tickles my nostrils)… and some balsamic waxy notes keep making me feel that it would be better as a room or a candle scent – not as my personal scent.

Much better today. Possibly I could have been dehydrated because I drank like a lot of warm water last evening and I feel perfectly fine today. If the appointment is necessary, it will be on Monday.

Oh, you’re right! I just checked their website and Santal Carmin is missing while others like Silver Iris or Blanche Immortelle are there. Maybe it’s out of stock? Might be worth giving them a call to ask.
On the other hand I have a huge bottle, I can decant from it.

Is this the place to say that I love Etro’s fashions? I even own two Etro sweaters and one jacket… courtesy of the sales at Neiman-Marcus. It’s intimidating to go onto their designer level where each shop is segregated but I am so enthused to see Etro’s things that I go there anyway just to gawk at the fabrics and colors. I love that kind of wacky wild paisley stuff. And at a few times of the year I get lucky with their markdowns.

Interesting. I think if the nutty note in KdB was less sweet, It will smell more similar to D600.

It’s supposed to be in the high 70s tomorrow here. We get one cold day and then it’s back to warm weather. The season cycles seem to be changing. Summer really never got started until mid July and now we’re experiencing September weather during October. Everything feels off.

Not reeking, but wafting a bit of Black Perfecto. I’m going through one of those phases where I’ve got a million decants and samples and bottles sitting out but draw a blank every time I go to spray myself. Perfume overload, perhaps, from all the swaps and splits. Black Perfecto has been my default go-to, as it’s very easy to wear, though I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about it.

More than one scent at a time confuses my nose, so I’m wreaking havoc by trying new stuff this week. Today is SSS’s Winter Woods, which is lovely. I took a look at their website, and they are currently closed due to the fires. Hope all is well with them.

I went to Saks yesterday and made the acquaintance of the nicest young man at the perfume counter. He’s new to fragrance, told me shyly that he had eight bottles, so I told him how many I have and we had a great time talking perfume. He knows nothing of the great perfume houses, had never heard of Guerlain, so I wrote down NST, Basenotes, and Fragrantica web addresses on a card for him. I did get to smell all the Eric Buterbaugh fragrances (none worthy of purchase for me) and my new perfume friend gave me a store sample atomizer of Kilian Woman in Gold.

Today I’m sampling Olympic Orchids Arizona. The other three I’ve tried have been near scrubbers, but this has pleasant notes of pine and something that smells like smoky licorice.

Woke up really, really late today. I’ve been wearing nothing but Amouage offerings this week, so it’s Amouage Gold today. On Sunday, saw Victoria and Abdul while wearing Lyric. My coworker got a little nasty with me because I was kind of surprised on how nasty the British were at that time. Her response was didn’t you learn it in school? It’s in books you know. American schools don’t teach world history and every book I’ve read in relation to the Victorian and Edwardian Era, whitewashed a lot of stuff. Said coworker is an elderly English woman.

Well that’s obnoxious. Next time you see her be sure to ask about Emerson, Thoreau, and Transcendentalism. That’ll shut her up.

Meanwhile, have you found an Amougage you like?

SOTD Guerlain Idylle edp for work appropriateness for a meeting this am.
My brother is here this week for a professional workshop and we went to a music performance last night. He brought a friend with him who he told me had gone to Frederic Malle and bought something (he wanted to know if I had heard of FM ????). He must have told her about my perfume interest because she gifted me the sample of Une Rose they gave her with purchase! So sweet of her-she bought POAL. I forgot how BIG Une Rose is so a sample will last me forever!

And happy to inspire, Robin! Ya know, I think I don’t wear the Prada often because it is very tenacious on me for such a soft scent. I kind of was done smelling it by the end of the day and had to shower it off-and it was still lingering!

It is more tenacious than the “regular” Infusion, for sure. And I do know that feeling — I sometimes think I am the only perfume consumer who doesn’t want fragrances more than 4 hours.

    SOTD is Divine “L’Inspiratrice”.

    Top: rose, ylang-ylang and bergamot;
    Mid: rose (again), peony and musk;
Base: patchouli, vetiver, vanilla and tonka.

This one grabbed me when I was selecting my samples for the week and pouring any dab-on samples into 2ml spray containers. Now I’m wearing it, not so much. That is, it smells gorgeous when first on, but either dies off quickly or my nose gets too used to it too fast. Anyway, it’s nice stuff but not one I’ll rush to repeat.

    Reeking havoc in JPG Classique

I was inspired to order a sample after watching a retro YouTube video by Lili Jarlson.

I’m a half an hour in – I think I quite like it!

It’s funny how someone can inspire us to try a perfume – this was not on my radar before, but Lily just really seemed to enjoy it – of course I have no idea if our scent tastes are similar.

Sort of reeking havoc today by wearing one perfume over the drydown of another. SOTDs = Nest Perfumes Midnight Fleur, from the sample stash, over the drydown of yesterday’s Amouage Honour Woman which is on my clothing. A rather nice combo.

SOTD = Rania J. Ambre Loup

Love! I am finishing the dregs of my decant before unwrapping my FB. Smells like spicy pipe tobacco on first spray and dries down to a fabulous vanilla.

I saw a little ad to the side of my NST tab. Jo Malone Orange Bitters is back, in limited edition once again. The label is matte orange. My bottle from last year was a harlequin pattern. I know Robin announced it a few months back. Get it while you can.

I have an idea for a Friday. Fabulous Five Friday wherein you successively wear the same perfume you wore yesterday and layer it with a new one and build up to layering 5 fragrances by Friday, assuming you start on a Monday. If you decide to start participating on Wednesday, you only need to layer 3 perfumes. This will take planning. I may “cheat” with Demeters 🙂

Orange Bitters looks yummy. The harlequin bottle is prettier than this year’s.

The way perfumes can interact is fascinating. I like the Five for Friday layering idea. It could work with scents from Jo Malone or Dame or Atelier.
