Thursday scent of the day 10/12

Posted by Robin on 12 October 2017 244 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Pulled Pork Day, and UN Spanish Language Day. And a quick PSA: the splitmeet is coming up on Saturday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I put on a dab of Madly Kenzo (by Aurélien Guichard) to see if I would like it any better than I did when I reviewed it. Nope. This one is not going to grow on me.

Reminder: on 10/13, wear a fragrance by Aurélien Guichard or Jean Guichard.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image shows Kenzo Tanami Flower T Shirt for girls, $65.

I am sampling Robert Piguet Blossom by Aurélien Guichard. It’s a nice orange blossom/neroli scent, fresh and citrussy, with juicy and tangy orange. It is similar to classical neroli colognes, but there is no lavender and other bitter aromatic herbs. The longevity is also cologne-like: I sprayed it around three hours ago, half an hour ago it was a skin scent, now I can barely smell it. Time to re-apply. It’s a pretty good refreshing fragrance for a hot weather.

I’ve been reading the news on fires in California just now. This is scary. I hope all Californian NST-ers are safe.

I think you are right on both counts: it’s pretty, but you probably do not need it. It’s nice, pleasant but not outstanding. The best part for me is that mouthwatering citrus note – it made me crave a glass of orange or mandarin juice. The ubiquitous white musk is there, though I think the creator keeps it in check most of the time. My expectations were low, and this is probably why I am quite enjoying today (and also because it’s a grey day, and this scent is so sunny and cheerful). I do not think I’d pay for it – I have too many fragrances to buy something which is just pleasant and nice – but if a decant suddenly fell from the sky, I’d use it.

Good to know, thanks. So far modern Piguet just doesn’t suit me. I like Bandit & Fracas and that’s it.

In Gucci Guilty (Aureliene Guichard). I had to unbury the bottle from the back of my cabinet. I do not wear it much. It is nice for the dark, cool, rainy day we are having. But I think it suits much better in colder weather.

I haven’t done a side by side of those two, but from what I remember about Guilty Black, it had less florals and more patchouli than the original Guilty. It came off as a well made fruitchouli to me. YMMV, of course.

Wearing Papillion Tobacco Rose. The mossy note matches the grey, cool rainy morning we’re having. I find this perfume a bit wistful.
I was just told by the assistant in my office that I have 11 vacation days I need to use before 12/15 or I’ll lose them. 11! I’m not sure how that happened. I better get crackin’… Looking forward to some short work weeks ????

She does nice work even if all aren’t quite to my taste. And nothing redundant in the collection. She seems like she puts a lot of thought and time into her perfumes. I tried Dryad for the 1st time. I need to get a sample soon but I liked it a lot.

    SOTD: Il Profvmo’s Caramella D`Amore
Notes read very delicious with Popcorn, Pistachio and Cotton Candy. But on my skin it’s just a very gentle powdered sugar dusted pink floral. I would love for it to smell more edible or nutty..

Today I’m wearing Elixir des Merveilles and it’s great fun trying to get the differences from yesterday’s Parfum.

I love them all, except for the newest blue one.

And do you know if Eau Claire was discontinued? It’s not listed on Hermes site and none of the department stores have it at the moment…

It would be shameful if it’s true.
Now I have to seriously consider adding it to my collection of Merveilles as well.

I bought a bottle of Eau Claire earlier this year when I saw it wasn’t available on any other sites. Now I have a seasonal wardrobe of the original, Eau Claire, and L’Ambre. It’s fun to layer them, too!

Never tried the Elixir or the Parfum, but I was not a fan of the blue one either.

Yes, I see it in stock at some on-line shops, but none of the official places have it.

I have to act quick, I’m afraid, until it’s gone or costs a fortune.

Never tried to layer them on purpose, but I think they are really a great option for someone who wants to have a signature scent with just some little adjustments regarding the mood and the weather.

Eau in the morning, Parfum or Elixir in the evening, Ambre the next day…and your scarves, sweaters and coats smell of the same basenotes without interfering with one another.

        Perfect!

Hermes always removes things from the website when they are out of stock — it does not necessarily mean it is discontinued (Hiris disappears and reappears from time to time, for instance.) But it could be, of course!

SOTD is TF Fleur de Chine, from a decant provided by a very lovely NSTer. I keep hoping I’ll stop loving it so much (because cha-ching) … but no. Still total adoration. Oh well, maybe I’ll win the lottery or something. 🙂

It is discounted, apsara is right. But if you want to buy some before it’s gone, there’s a seller on FB who offers decants much more affordable than a bottle price. Contact me through About on my sight if you want a link to the group/page (I’m not affiliated – just love FdC).

Thank you, Undina – such a kind offer, especially since it would mean less available for you! But you and apsara inspired me to do one last internet search, and I stumbled across a discounter with the smaller-sized FB at a price that was more in line with my budget (sometimes timing is everything). And since I got some health-related news this morning that could have been bad but was very good instead, I decided to celebrate. The bottle will be here in a week!

Pulled pork day! I didn’t know that was a thing… I cooked two pork tenderloins in my slow-cooker the other day and we’ve been eating pulled pork for dinner the past two nights! Yummy.

SOTD is a re-sample of reorchestrated Baghari. It’s nice. None of the notes lists I’ve seen mention incense, but it is definitely here along with aldehydes and some lovely florals. The whole thing reminds me quite a bit of Andy Tauer’s work for Tableau de Parfums Miriam (which I have a bottle of, so I doubt I’d need any Baghari).

(I once blind-bought in on a split of vintage Baghari eau de cologne. When the split portion arrived, I spritzed it on and went straight to the grocery store. By the time I got to the checkout, it was going through a VERY animalic phase, and the poor cashier was trying to give me my change without leaning close to me. Oy. I never wore the thing again.)

I am wearing the absolute dregs of a mini of LouLou that I’ve had for several years. I will say that I hardly ever wore it, so maybe the juice evaporated. Certainly the few drops left were more than enough to have quite a bit of sillage.

Sitting at my desk and contemplating the new Mod Cat Maze I have recently installed on the wall. Sans cats. I am ever optimistic that the furballs will like and utilize this long line of “Will this make you happy and healthy, and keep your interest?” objects. Instead, Otto likes the big sheets of paper that insulate my Amazon packages, and Zoink hopes that I will forget to hide the re-usable plastic grocery bags (she has a weird thing for chewing plastic).

I think I’ll start leaving beef jerky treats on the cat maze shelves.

Wearing Praliné de Santal (thanks, Deva!), and smelling luscious.

Your cat maze sounds wonderful 🙂 Give them time! They have to accidentally discover it first, on their own terms. Or maybe they are just lazy bums.

Otto and Zoink are great names.

I bought some new bowls for my cats’ dry food, and they had the most fun with all the wrapping paper the bowls were wrapped in. They loved it. Does Zoink just chew, or does she actually eat the plastic? My cat Midnight is absolutely addicted to plastic. He lick or chews on any plastic available, and he is constantly either throwing it up, or pooping it out.

Sadly, she loves to both chew and eat it. She is at the point where she recognizes the sound of crinkling plastic, and will come running whenever I open a package, or put away groceries. I am in constant fear that she will find a bag somewhere when I am not at home, and eat the entire thing. Any ziploc bags on the lower shelves of my pantry bear telltale puncture marks, where she has zipped in while my back is turned in the kitchen, and started contentedly chomping on the corners.

Also love their names. Cats… they’ll deign to enjoy the maze at their own pace. I bought mine a shearling throw, and they ignored it for months. Then it became their favorite luxury. I think they just needed to get their and our smells on it. Maybe add something with a familiar smell to the maze?

I think it is nice, although I’ve smelled perfumes that are very similar. Penhaligon’s mentions a coffee accord–although I don’t really get that, I get more of a sweet vanilla with some spices-nothing sharp here. It’s very cozy. I noticed on luckyscent there is a review that says it smells like Mancera Aoud Vanille but not as good. I can’t attest to this because I haven’t smelled the Mancera–but I know what the person is getting at. There are similar perfumes for a better pricepoint. Although–if you’re after the cat bottle and you like a cozy vanilla scent for the colder weather it may be worth it. hahahaha

I loved when they introduced those small bottles. While they are more expensive per ml, I don’t think I’ll ever go through the full bottle of most of my current perfumes, which will mean, in reality, that I’m paying more per ml used. And perfume stores better in the original bottle than in a decant – that’s why I try to buy brands’ bottles, when those are available in smaller formats. Otherwise – split it is! 🙂

I’m wearing L’Occitane Pamplemousse Rhubarb and drinking a cup of Guerlain Shalimar tea.

My allergies have been acting up so much lately, I just spritzed my forearms lightly.

Last night I watched Bull Durham, and Susan Sarandon’s character “Annie” had a bottle of Shalimar on her dresser. It must have been a bottle of Shalimar Extract because she dabbed it on from the stopper. She also had other bottles, but I could not tell what they were.

I just saw Jackie, too, and really liked it. I’m pretty sure one of the other bottles was Bal a Versailles.

I thought Neruda, the other movie this year by Jackie’s director Pablo Larrain, was quite wonderful. I don’t remember seeing any perfume bottles in that one but the settings were so evocative and detailed that you could almost smell them.

Can you discuss the differences? I got a bottle of the EDT from the swapmeet, and it smells pretty different from my memory, which suggests that I had smelled the EDP. If memory serves, I like the EDP a bit better, but the EDT is more pleasant when I’m in the mood for something a bit more sweet and sour.

    1) Am hosting a friend who works in the wine industry in Northern CA this weekend. She lost everything but some clothes and her dog in the fires in Santa Rosa. Will be here to enjoy some rain, stock up on work clothes and supplies and then right back to CA again- it’s harvest time, and although many vineyards are damaged, she will still need to do the surveying and logistical work for this year. I told to stay as long as she wants and needs but she is desperately needed for her work.

    2) Am in Cuir de Russie because honestly I need something grounded and lovely. White blouse, grey slacks, mauve lip gloss and a big blowout seems needed on a rainy autumn day.

I’m wearing Jour d’Hermes today, which I received as a generous freebie at the swapmeet. I’ve tried it in stores before and didn’t like it, so I was really only trying it on to be polite (to whom?). As expected, the top notes were awful–caustic and sharp; nasty cleaning products. However, this time, after the first five minutes, it settled into a gorgeous, sweet, greenish gardenia rose.

I checked the notes in JdH about an hour into wearing it, and rose is nowhere to be found. What this tells me is that the incredible levels of smoke in the air are wreaking (and reeking) all kinds of havoc on my nose. We are some 90 miles from the Napa fires, and smoke levels down here are still dangerous. The air is hazy, and while it smells wonderful, the constant scratchiness in my face, throat, and head definitely isn’t wonderful.

I left work early yesterday because I felt dizzy, coughy, and headachey. Today, I’ve come equipped with my inhaler and ibuprofen, but I couldn’t find my mask, sadly 🙁 I felt a little unsafe driving to work this morning because my head feels smoke-addled. Let’s see if I last all day at work today. I mostly just want to go home and curl up with the kittens.

Neighbors 🙁 (70 miles away from the fire)

Using saline nasal spray helps a little (at least for a couple of minutes). I was reluctant to take allergy medicine because it makes me drowsy (even the “daytime” ones) and I need to work but it seems that I have to do it now – or I wouldn’t be able to work anyway because of coughing and watery eyes.

Stay safe!! I wasn’t sure if the allergy meds would help because it seems like such a different reaction than most allergies. I may try tonight, though, depending on how difficult it is to go to sleep. Did you end up taking them? How are they working?

I’m co-presenting at a workshop for faculty at my university today, so I wanted something that would read as both calming and professional. Copal Azur it is.

Presentations make me nervous, but there’s only supposed to be 3 attendees at this workshop, so the stakes are pretty low.

No Guichards within easy reach and since reading this morning that Laurie Erickson of SSS has evacuated her home, I’ve chosen Champagne de Bois because trees, and champagne, and Laurie who is such a sweet soul as so many of us know. Big hugs to everyone affected by the fires, and prayers that we will all continue to come together to help one another and take care of our lovely planet and its beloved wildlife and nature.

It’s Friday here already – yay! I’ll be wearing Chinatown, the only Guichard I have. I’m having a day off work, I felt the urge for a long weekend and took the opportunity when I realised yesterday that there was nothing that couldn’t wait till Monday.

I am having an early start regardless, I’m taking the car in for repair as it’s started making a disturbing rattling sound. That’s not surprising, my car is 25 years old, but I hope it’s OK, because I like it, and getting another one will make a horrible hole in my perfume budget.

Thinking of Laurie Erickson, the owner and the nose behind Sonoma Scent Studio, who had to evacuate yesterday from her house in Sonoma (she’s fine; and her house – as of this morning – was still intact), tried before shower to put on Fireside Intense but it was too intense for this day. Wearing Bvlgari Black because all I (or anybody else) can smell from it at this point is a nice vanilla – because of the awful smoke scent in the air that gets inside everything :(. Our air is officially “Unhealthy” (particles (PM2.5) – 158 where I am). Why can’t we get some rain – it would have helped everyone…

I don’t know… Maybe if we all do some type of a rain dance, it’ll help?
As bad as it smells and feels here, I want to cry every time I think about how it is just 70-100 miles away from here, in all of my favorite places I visited on so many happy occasions. Poor people who lost everything in a blink of an eye!

Hurricanes, shootings, now fires… It seems like we all can’t catch a break. Sad.

As overwhelmed by everything as I’ve been feeling (hurricanes, shootings, fires, as you say), it makes me feel better that I am not alone in feeling overwhelmed.

I can’t imagine putting on Fireside Intense right now. It’s basically what the air smells like already.

Actually, it helps when people share your concerns and sympathize. So let’s keep each other sane.

I had an urge to see how it would smell today but I suspected I wouldn’t be able to pull it off – hence “before the shower” part. On the other hand, that Vitriol d’Oeillet would smell just lovely, especially for that price… 😉 (just teasing)

    SotD = Eau des Merveilles

I would wear that pink t-shirt! It made me smile.

EdM was mentioned yesterday, so I brazenly spritzed then spent last night reeking of it. I dabbed a bit more today. It smells different when dabbed. More woods.

Last June Persolaise interviewed Nathalie Feisthauer about AdV Pelargonium. There’s an interesting mention of EdM at the end of the article.

SOTD is “Casbah” from Robert Piguet, by Aurelien Guichard.

    Top: angelica root, black pepper and nutmeg;
    Mid: incense, orris and tobacco;
    Base: cedar and vetiver.

A good, cool-inflected incense. I might get a larger decant of this.

Para el día del idioma español del ONU, voy a compartir algo con vosotros. Hay una tienda preciosa de los perfumes en Málaga – se llama ‘SAC’ en la calle Granada – donde compré mi botella de Robert Piguet “Fracas”. I am in Bulgari Black today. I love this one.

I meant to note about my time in Korea that while the big department stores certainly carry any perfume you’d want (well most designer stuff and some Byredo, Diptyque, etc), the smaller cosmetic stores and chains only carry what we would consider light and fresh. Kenzo Flower, CK One, Miss Dior, Fresh stuff, etc. Just an observation as I was out and about.

Over-sprayed and loving it. It is deeper leathery Iris than the EDP. Fragrantica lists vanilla for the EDP but not for the Extrait but my nose detected vanilla….
