Friday scent of the day 10/6

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2017 224 Comments

Friday! Plus, happy National Noodle Day. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance with lily, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I meant to be in the lily bomb Serge Lutens Un Lys, but I just can't find it and maybe I'm out? So I'm in the fresh neo-lily Cartier Baiser Volé.

Reminder: on 10/13, wear a fragrance by Aurélien Guichard or Jean Guichard.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image of Cartier Cactus jewelry items (plus actual plant materials) is via Cartier's US Facebook page.

        🙂

        and this is my first with the EDP

        in the 70s I wore 5,22 and 19 (then Coco in the 80s)

        I remember 19 being a galbanum bomb…this version is more subdued and very chic and elegant.

      Quadruplets! Well, really pentuplets (?) because my toddler loves playing with the flip top and ends up going to daycare smelling fabulous. Tea is Taylors of Harrogate Earl Grey because I left Mariage Frere Paris-Provence in the office. Side note – man I wish they would make that tea into a candle!

      Twins! I’m sure we’ll be joined by other siblings today.

      I hardly ever wear Gold in fall — I always wear it at Easter and the 10 days in summer when my stargazer lilies are in bloom, but other times it’s just when the fancy strikes me. Enjoying it today, but that might be because we’re supposed to have a high temp of 85F.

    I have nothing (that I know of) with lily, and nothing by either perfumer for next week’s challenge either (but now that I’ve seen his photo I have a huge crush on Aurelien), so I’m anti-participating today in Alahiiiiiiine. I don’t know whether it’s my nose or my skin chemistry or something else, but lately all my perfumes have been more floral than they used to be … not that that’s a bad thing at all. Alahine with more flowers is VERY nice.

    Last night Ksawery the orcane stuck my area. The rain was falling horizontal, branches were flying in the air and trees were falling, blocking the streets and railways. It looked disastrous, many people had ni electricity and had their houses damaged.

    I am safe now, I was short of water yesterday though.

    Sotd is Le Galion Iris, which apart of smelling of iris also has a prominent white lily note.

        I ended up liking the Lily & Spice much more when I brightened it up with a spritz of L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer. It became really lovely combination of lily and spicy incense with more depth and complexity than either by itself. I’m generally not much given to layering but I’m pretty sure I’ll wear this one again.

        Both of these perfumes are at least ten years old and have been gathering dust in the back of the cabinet. It’s nice to see them come alive again.

    Yosh’s Stargazer. This was in The Sample Sea, and I was baffled by why on earth I had bought it because I’m not. a. fan. of. lily. After sampling it, I realized that I must have read about it being very green and that’s why I wanted to sample it in the first place. Or I was just wacko. The possibilities are endless when contemplating the way my unfathomable brain works …

    Anyway, this is a very bright green fragrance, sharp and very radiant without being spikey or witchy. It even made it into my “would like more” list which is not as long as I anticipated it would be yay! Either it doesn’t really smell like lilies, or I am in denial, or a new realm has been revealed.

      It was $29 dollars at Haute Look not that long ago…but I just checked and it is no longer available 🙁

      Luckyscent has it on sale but not nearly as good as the 74% off sale from HL

    Good morning, all! Today I’m wearing Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily. I bought a small bottle when it first came out, which I now see was 2008. It’s been hidden away in my perfume cabinet but I dug it out to revisit. I’m cheating on the lily assignment though because it’s hardly got any. That’s OK because the rest is great! Last night I tried Le Labo Lys 41, which I have a sample of. It’s a potent white floral and I just really do not like it or the smell of lilies in general. The worst ones are those pink and white starburst lilies. A friend had a bouquet in her living room when I visited and I sneezed so much she had to put them away while I was there. (I admit they’re very pretty though.)

    Trying Amouage Figment (W) today. Interested to see how it dries down. Even upon the opening it has a hint of some underlying muskiness which I was drawn to when I smelled it at Scent Bar. Shower after Mysore was JM Lime Basil Mandarin shower oil followed by some Peony and Blush Suede body creme. Happy Friday!

    I am wearing Lys Noir, which I sampled at Jovoy. I told the woman I did not like Lily or tuberose and was annoyed when she suggested it but I am obsessed with it. It manages to just barely stay under my tolerance line for cloying and I just love it

    Friday, gang!

    1) No lilies. Am in Boucheron today – perfect for a very cool morning of 45F!

    2) My favorite fig tree in the neighborhood was trimmed down! Am very sad but I understand why the owner did it ( it was HUGE, blocked light and the figs were starting to invite critters to make a home. Sigh. But there are plenty of figs from picking so will eat those and be grateful- and there are other fig trees in the city as well to pick from. Speaking of fruit, my plum jam turned out wonderful and will be making an appearance in lots of yogurt and cakes this winter! 🙂

    3) I look very rock and roll in my leather jacket, black jeans and lace shirt and gelled back Afro. Am in a oldie but good lipstick- Revlon Black Cherry (477) and Fenty foundation which may just have spoiled me for other foundations.

      After I dug out my DK Gold this week, I sat down and went through all my bottles, sorting them into winter, summer, and toss. There are three times as many in the last category as there are in either of the other two, and I think I could have been even tougher. I felt so good after having done this! Now to find where I can donate all these bottles.

        Actually this was a good comment! I have organized my samples this way and break them out appropriately. The full bottles + minis are the ride or dies. Boucheron has always been a favorite for fall/winter- especially for everyday.

        I live in Portland, OR- so figs just ripened about 1-2 weeks ago for this area, but of course in my neighborhood I am at the gateway to the mountains so the mornings are VERY crisp indeed now. We love figs here in Portland and environs, and the season is coming to a close:

        I gave away several bottles of perfume through my local Buy Nothing group. Many cities and neighborhoods have a Facebook page where people offer things for free – I have given away a ton of stuff and know it gets put to use. A lot of places won’t accept donations of used cosmetics/toiletries, so this was an easy way to do that.

          That’s awesome. It’s nice that someone else can make use of it. Plus it frees up some space for you too.

          My sister in law collects the same stuff (full and even partial used toiletries, etc) and donates them to a Woman’s shelter. I even got a few people at work to donate as well. I have another full box of goodies to take to her this weekend.

    I’m in Vanille Galante today. I can’t really smell any lily in it, but Robin said there was, and she’s the authority on all things community project, so I say I get a gold star!

    A little fact for you concerning next week’s CP: You’ll note that the Guichard perfumers come from Grasse, and will note that the -ard name ending reminds you of MolinARD and FragonARD. Indeed, when you visit Grasse, you’ll see -ards all around! Historically, -ard was a common ending to last names in that area of France. Voilà, that’s all.

In other news, it’s time for Canadians and USA’ers to vote for their country’s best restroom at http://www.bestrestroom.com. I know this because one of the contenders is here in Portland. Gucci Bloom has arrived in town ( along with the first of the massive cruise ships that visit over summer). When I look at those ships I just visualise tons and tons of raw sewage spewing into the sea every day , and it makes me cross. The Gucci perfume reminds me of Christian Dior’s Remember Me which must have come out around 2000, pretty and floral. I wish I was wearing La Vierge de Fer as it struck me as a slightly weird metallic lily but I’m not. Instead I am going to torment myself by exploring ylang ylang this week at my local shops…I feel depressed just thinking about it. Wearing Doterra Whisper oil blend.

    Hello, NST! I’m posting early today since I will be on the road later on. Taking a road trip to the PA Renaissance Faire/Festival to help a friend celebrate his 40th birthday over the weekend. So, no Internet. See you all on Monday!

    SOTD = SL De Profundis, from the sample stash. I am out of my funk, and back to wearing scents. However, I’m thinking that I should have tried something different. It seems that this is one of the “cool weather” Serge Lutens to my nose, and it is NOT cool in my part of the world.

      Editing myself to say that the WEATHER is not cool. I just realized I typed some terrible grammar up there.

      I love DeProfundis but usually only wear it during fall. Where is fall BTW?

    I was scratching my head over lily, but then remembered I have a sample of Shanghai Lily. I like it, but not enough to buy.

    SOTD is Ineke “Gilded Lily”

    Top: pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit and elemi;
    Mid: lily;
    Base: patchouli, oakmoss and labdanum.

    Well, it’s undeniably lily. And the bottle is very nice. Someone else is welcome to the rest of the world’s supply of this one. :^)

    SOTD yesterday was Majda Bekkali “Fusion Sacree Obscur”.

    Top: rum, celery, sweet orange, neroli, cardamom, lavender, bergamot and citron;
    Mid: coffee, geranium, clove and carnation;
    Base: liquorice, benzoin, opoponax, cedar, sandalwood, vanilla, caramel, musk and ambergris.

    So, this one was worth trying, but I didn’t love it in the end. The fantastic explosion of spices, woods and fruits at the start was marred by a soapiness I didn’t enjoy. Then it got more woody, and the caramel built up and it was just a bit too much for me. I did not get any lavender, so a very different reaction to Kanuka’s last week. :^D

    Now I know why I made it a rule not to wear perfumes from samples (unless I tried it already many times and plan on buy the perfume after I’m done with the sample): to go with the CP, I put on one of the lily perfumes, for which I had a sample but didn’t spend enough time testing previously. I HATE it on me. I won’t mention the name since I saw that several people wear it today and enjoy. But, in general, I knew that I didn’t like lily in perfumes – so I’m not surprised, just annoyed that it clings to my skin.

    On the positive note – it’s Friday, and I don’t plan to work on the weekend!

      Lucky you with not working the weekend. I have no such luck because I have to finish a presentation ( not much more to do). Unfortunately, I have to monitor Nate and will definitely have to spend at least 3 hours, likely more, to prepare for its impact. I hope it ends up being a nothing!

        I spoke too soon 🙁 I haven’t finished what I planned to, so now I’ll probably spend at least 2-3 hours on Sunday working (tomorrow is sacred! I need my rest). Oh, well.. 🙂

    No lilies for me today. I’m wearing Seville l’aube. Again! It’s been a summer favorite for me and after a week of rain and rain and rain and clouds and temps in the 70s, we’re back to 89 and sunny and hot – so summer once more.

    My lily scent for today is Tocca Stella. It turns out I don’t really have any lily frags, so I made a pit-stop at Sephora so I could participate.

    I’m looking forward to indulging in some good old-fashioned superstitious preparation for the Diamondbacks-Dodgers NLDS game in a few hours. I did a bit of faux-numerology for uniform numbers and wore N°22 for the Wild Card Game the other night, so I have to do it again, of course. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, right? ????

    Have yourselves a wonderful weekend, wherever you are, fellow NSTers!

    No lilies for me! Nothing centered on lily, anyway. I thought about Idylle as it has LOTV and lily is listed as a supporting note. But it was Dryad that called my name today. Got a wonderful surprise in the mail today from a perfume angel and I intend to do some side-by-side smackdowns very soon. Perfume is so much fun, and perfume people are the best 😀

    SOTD = Dior Dune

    I am absolutely surprised that no one else wore this today!

    People, why don’t I wear this more often? It is a gorgeous, long lasting perfume. I actually spritzed more today than I ever have (5!) and woot! Even though it has tons of flowers besides lily (peony! rose! jasmine! ylang ylang! ), it does not smell like a floral fragrance; instead, it is aldehylic ambery sandalwood goodness. I have a vintage bottle (from 1987, I think) and a smaller one from 1994 ( but I could be off).

    Wearing Tom Ford Lys Fume. Lovely fresh-spicy lily, not particularly smoky to my nose. It used to annoy me when people posted about wonderful discontinued perfumes that I would probably never smell, and probably shouldn’t smell, to avoid the perfume equivalent of unrequited love. Now here I am a few years later, one of those annoying people. Lys Fume hasn’t been discontinued very long, and I got my very gently used bottle from eBay.

    I love lily in perfume–the arum variety, not -of-the-valley. As with orange blossom, I will sniff anything that lists it as a note, even a La Vie est belle flanker. Looking

    Wearing a longtime favorit lily fragrance today: Lily, by Lili Bermuda. It never fails to lift my spirits and bring back happy memories of our only family vacation in lovely Bermuda. I posted about Lily here: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/2016/05/06/may-muguet-marathon-lily-by-lili-bermuda/. Happy Friday!
